Meiobenthos densities and higher taxon composition were studied in an active gas seepage area at depths from 182 to 252 m in the submarine Dnieper Canyon located in the northwestern part of the Black Sea. The meiobenthos was represented by Ciliata, Foraminifera, Nematoda, Polychaeta, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Amphipoda, and Acarina. Also present in the sediment samples were juvenile stages of Copepoda and Cladocera which may be of planktonic origin. Nematoda and Foraminifera were the dominant groups. The abundance of the meiobenthos varied between 2397 and 52593 Ind./m**2. Maximum densities of Nematoda and Foraminifera were recorded in the upper sediment layer of a permanent H2S zone at depths from 220 to 250 m. This dense concentration of meiobenthos was found in an area where intense methane seeps were covered by methane-oxidizing microbial mats. Results suggest that methane and its microbial oxidation products are the factors responsible for the presence of a highly sulfidic and biologically productive zone characterized by specially adapted benthic groups. At the same time, an inverse correlation was found between meiofauna densities and methane concentrations in the uppermost sediment layers. The hypothesis is that the concentration of Nematoda and Foraminifera within the areas enriched with methane is an ecological compromise between the food requirements of these organisms and their adaptations to the toxic H2S.

The magnitude and the chronology of anthropogenic impregnation by Hg and other trace metals of environmental concern (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd and Pb, including its stable isotopes) in the sediments are determined at the DYFAMED station, a site in the Ligurian Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean) chosen for its supposed open-sea characteristics. The DYFAMED site (VD) is located on the right levee of the Var Canyon turbidite system, at the end of the Middle Valley. In order to trace the influence of the gravity current coming from the canyon on trace metal distribution in the sediment, we studied an additional sediment core (VA) from a terrace of the Var Canyon, and material collected in sediment traps at the both sites at 20 m above sea bottom. The patterns of Hg and other trace element distribution profiles are interpreted using stable Pb isotope ratios as proxies for its sources, taking into account the sedimentary context (turbidites, redox conditions, and sedimentation rates). Major element distributions, coupled with the stratigraphic examination of the sediment cores point out the high heterogeneity of the deposits at VA, and major turbiditic events at both sites. At the DYFAMED site, we observed direct anthropogenic influence in the upper sediment layer (<2 cm), while on the Var Canyon site (VA), the anthropization concerns the whole sedimentary column sampled (19 cm). Turbiditic events superimpose their specific signature on trace metal distributions. According to the 210Pbxs-derived sedimentation rate at the DYFAMED site (0.4 mm yr-1), the Hg-enriched layer of the top core corresponds to the sediment accumulation of the last 50 years, which is the period of the highest increase in Hg deposition on a global scale. With the hypothesis of the absence of significant post-depositional redistribution of Hg, the Hg/C-org ratio changes between the surface and below are used to estimate the anthropogenic contribution to the Hg flux accumulated in the sediment. The Hg enrichment, from pre-industrial to the present time is calculated to be around 60%, consistent with estimations of global Hg models. However, based on the chemical composition of the trapped material collected in sediment traps, we calculated that epibenthic mobilization of Hg would reach 73%. Conversely, the Cd/C-org ratio decreases in the upper 5 cm, which may reflect the recent decrease of atmospheric Cd inputs or losses due to diagenetic processes.

From the south-eastern Tyrrhenian deep-sea floor, four sediment cores of "Meteor" cruise 22 (1971) are described. These cores were taken in the basin between the Aeolian Islands and the Marsili Seamount, an elevation of more tha 3000 m above the sea floor. The sedimentation of the deep-sea basin is distinguished by a sequence of turbidites with a high sedimentation rate. The composition of the clastic material and the position of the cores in the mouth area of the morphologically very pronounced Stromboli Canyon suggest an interpretation of the turbidite sequence as fan of this canyon onto the deep-sea floor. A white rhyolitic pumice-tephra at the base of the 4 m thick sequence of turbidites in core M22-102 has been correlated with the Pelato eruption of the island of Liparo in the 6th century A.D. At the foot of the Marsili Seamount - apparently in morphologically elevated positions - the influence of the turbidite sedimentation increases, the rate of sedimentation is lower and stratigraphic omissions are probable. Here, rather compacted globigerina marls have been found in only 15 -25 cm depth. In addition, volcanic material in the form of lapilli layers, palagonitized ashes and detrital volcanic sands of the Marsili Seamount have been encountered in this area. An up to 3 cm thick layer of completely palagonitized basaltic ash intercalates with the marls at the base of two cores. Layers of very fresh olivine basaltic lapilli in core 103 and palagonitized lapilli of latitic composition in core 104 testify to an explosive submarine volcanism of the Marsili Seamount. According to the stratigraphy of core 103, the latest manifestations of this basaltic volcanism belong to the late Pleistocene (Emiliana huxleyi-zone of Nannoplankton stratigraphy) The basaltic lapilli are glassy to perhyaline with phenocrysts or microphenocrysts predominantely of olivine. The petrological character of the basaltic volcanites with high MgO, Ni, Cr and high MgO/FeO- and Ni/Co-ratios exhibits primitive basaltic features. These basalts clearly differ from basalts of the ocean floors, mid-ocean ridges and marginal basins. Prominent features are a missing iron-enrichment trend and low TiO2. Al2O3 tends to be high, as well as K2O and related trace elements (Ba, Sr). In spite of silica undrsaturation and high color index, the Marsili basalt exhibit some analogies with the calcalkaline basalts of the Aeolian arc, as well as the undersaturated basalts of some other circumoceanic areas.

In recent sediments of the Stromboli Canyon sides features of mineral and grain size compositions, redox conditions, behavior of Fe, Mn, organic carbon, Mo, and W in an environment of active input of pyroclastic material are considered. Differences in conditions of sedimentation and early diagenesis in the east and west sides of the canyon depending on position of the prevailing direction of drift and steepness of the slopes, as well as types of differentiation of detrital material in sediments under conditions of permanent vibrations are specified.

Scandium and lanthanum were analyzed using neutron activation and ICP-MS methods in 60 samples of oceanic phosphorites of various composition and age recovered from continental margins and seamounts in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In the samples studied scandium content ranges from 0.1 to 60 ppm, lanthanum content ranges from 0.4 to 513 ppm, and La/Sc ratio varies from 1.1 to 114. The lowest scandium content occurs in recent phosphorite nodules, intermediate - in Pleistocene phosphatic sand, and the highest - in ancient seamount phosphorites. Process of scandium accumulation in the phosphorites is mainly controlled by their specific surface area and duration of their contact with ocean water. Lanthanum concentrates in the phosphorites much more intensely than scandium. Correlation between scandium and lanthanum distribution is weak, and it appears only when average concentrations of these elements in various groups of samples are compared.

Qualitative and quantitative food composition, as well as intensity of feeding of beryx-alfonsino Beryx splendens was examined on banks near the Azores. Data are presented with respect to size groups and taking into account type of feeding of males and females. Crustaceans and fishes were constituents of their feeding ration. A tendency toward increase in the number of consumed fishes in the course of ontogenetic development of beryx-alfonsino was noted. Beryx-alfonsino was shown to occupy the trophic level of consumers of the third order performing function of a deep-water predator.

Submarine slope failures of various types and sizes are common along the tectonic and seismically active Ligurian margin, northwestern Mediterranean Sea, primarily because of seismicity up to ~M6, rapid sediment deposition in the Var fluvial system, and steepness of the continental slope (average 11°). We present geophysical, sedimentological and geotechnical results of two distinct slides in water depth >1,500 m: one located on the flank of the Upper Var Valley called Western Slide (WS), another located at the base of continental slope called Eastern Slide (ES). WS is a superficial slide characterized by a slope angle of ~4.6° and shallow scar (~30 m) whereas ES is a deep-seated slide with a lower slope angle (~3°) and deep scar (~100 m). Both areas mainly comprise clayey silt with intermediate plasticity, low water content (30-75 %) and underconsolidation to strong overconsolidation. Upslope undeformed sediments have low undrained shear strength (0-20 kPa) increasing gradually with depth, whereas an abrupt increase in strength up to 200 kPa occurs at a depth of ~3.6 m in the headwall of WS and ~1.0 m in the headwall of ES. These boundaries are interpreted as earlier failure planes that have been covered by hemipelagite or talus from upslope after landslide emplacement. Infinite slope stability analyses indicate both sites are stable under static conditions; however, slope failure may occur in undrained earthquake condition. Peak earthquake acceleration from 0.09 g on WS and 0.12 g on ES, i.e. M5-5.3 earthquakes on the spot, would be required to induce slope instability. Different failure styles include rapid sedimentation on steep canyon flanks with undercutting causing superficial slides in the west and an earthquake on the adjacent Marcel fault to trigger a deep-seated slide in the east.

Submarine permafrost degradation has been invoked as a cause for recent observations of methane emissions from the seabed to the water column and atmosphere of the East Siberian shelf. Sediment drilled 52 m down from the sea ice in Buor Khaya Bay, central Laptev Sea revealed unfrozen sediment overlying ice-bonded permafrost. Methane concentrations in the overlying unfrozen sediment were low (mean 20 µM) but higher in the underlying ice-bonded submarine permafrost (mean 380 µM). In contrast, sulfate concentrations were substantially higher in the unfrozen sediment (mean 2.5 mM) than in the underlying submarine permafrost (mean 0.1 mM). Using deduced permafrost degradation rates, we calculate potential mean methane efflux from degrading permafrost of 120 mg/m**2 per year at this site. However, a drop of methane concentrations from 190 µM to 19 µM and a concomitant increase of methane d13C from -63 per mil to -35 per mil directly above the ice-bonded permafrost suggest that methane is effectively oxidized within the overlying unfrozen sediment before it reaches the water column. High rates of methane ebullition into the water column observed elsewhere are thus unlikely to have ice-bonded permafrost as their source.

On the base of data of Cruise 40 of R/V Akademik Keldysh features of formation of saline composition of interstitial waters from sediments containing free hydrocarbons (methane) and gas hydrates (CH4 x 6H2O) were considered. Chemical composition of the interstitial waters is presented for three zones of sediments from the Haakon Mosby submarine mud volcano: (1) zone of kettles containing free hydrocarbons, (2) gas hydrate sediments, and (3) periphery of the volcano. Abnormally high concentrations of bromine and especially iodine characteristic of the interstitial and particularly of the oil-field waters were found. Because of a great interest in natural gas hydrates found in marine sediments, we obtained a possibility to supplement scarce of available published data with some new information.

This study of sediments from the Cap Timiris Canyon demonstrates that geochemical data can provide reliable age-depth correlation even of highly turbiditic cores and attempts to improve our understanding of how turbidite emplacement is linked to climatic-related sea-level changes. The canyon incises the continental margin off NW Africa and is an active conduit for turbidity currents. In sediment cores from levee and intrachannel sites turbidites make up 6-42% of sediment columns. Age models were fitted to all studied cores by correlating downcore element data to dated reference cores, once turbidite beds had been removed from the dataset. These age models enabled us to determine turbidite emplacement times. The Cap Timiris Canyon has been active at least over the last 245 kyr, with turbidite deposition seemingly linked to stage boundaries and glacial stages. The highly turbiditic core from the intrachannel site postdates to ~15 kyr and comprises Holocene and late Pleistocene sediments. Turbidite deposition at this site was associated especially with the rapid sea-level rise at the Pleistocene/Holocene transition. During the Holocene, turbidity current activity decreased but did not cease.

Results of a complex study of the sedimentary cover (continuous seismic profiling and diatom analysis) in the northeastern Sea of Japan including the Bogorov Rise an adjacent part of the Japan Basin and the continental slope, are presented. Two varied-age complexes were distinguished in the sedimentary cover of the continental slope of Primorye: Middle Miocene and Late Miocene - Pleistocene. These complexes formed in a stable tectonic setting with no significant vertical movements. A depression in the acoustic basement is located along the continental slope and it is divided from the Japan Basin by a group of volcanic structures, the most uplifted part of which forms the Bogorov Rise. The depression probably formed before Middle Miocene. In Middle Miocene the Bogorov Rise was already at depths close to modern ones. In the sedimentary cover near the Bogorov Rise buried zones were found. Probably they were channels for gas transportation in pre-Pleistocene. Deformations of sediments that occurred in the beginning of Pleistocene are established in the basin.
