The reactivity of the mer-[RuCl3(dppb)H2O] complex (1) with di-hydrogen shows that the products formed depend on the conditions of the reaction, i.e., solvents and presence or absence of a base. The new mixed-valence complexes [(diop)ClRu-(h-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (3), [(binap)CIRu-(p-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (4), [(PPh3)(2)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (6), [(dppn)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (7), [(P-ptol(3))(2)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (8), [(SbPh3)(2)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (9), [(eta(6)-C6H6)Ru-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (11) and the known mixed-valence [(dppb)CIRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (5) and [(diop)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(diop)] (10) were synthesized from complexes (1) or (2) using a methodology developed in our research group. The known complexes [(dppb)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(2)-RuCl(dppb)] (12), [(dppb)(CO)Ru-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (13) and [H2NEt2][(dppb)ClRu-(mu-Cl)(3)-RuCl(dppb)] (14) were synthesized by changing the reaction conditions between mer-[RuCl3(dppb)H2O] (1) and dihydrogen. The crystal structures of (5) and (11) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Some of the complexes described here are effective pre-catalysts for the hydrogenation of imines. Preliminary results on the homogeneous hydrogenation of the imines Ph-CH2-N=CH-Ph and Ph-N=CH-Ph are presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in a study of the growth stages of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of polyaniline and a neutral biphosphinic ruthenium complex, namely mer-[ RuCl3 (dppb)(py)] (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphine) buthane, py = pyridine), Rupy. The LB films were deposited onto indium-tin-oxide substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy. From the granular morphology exhibited by the films one could infer growth processes inside and outside the grains. Growth outside was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of about 2.7. As one would expect, inside the grains the morphology is close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of about 2.

Ruthenium(II) complexes with general formula [RuCl3(NO)(P-P)] were obtained in the solid state, where P-P = PPh(2)(CH2)(n)PPh(2) (n = 1-3) and PPh(2)-CH = CH-PPh(2). The P-31 NMR spectra of these compounds measured in CH2Cl2 showed only singlets, consistent with a fac configuration containing two equivalent phosphorus atoms, However the X-ray diffraction data show that the [RuCl3(NO){PPh(2)(CH2)(3)PPh(2)}] complex crystallizes in a met configuration, where one of the phosphorus atoms is trans to the NO group, in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. The immobilization of the ruthenium moiety Ru(NH3)4SO3 by reaction of trans-[Ru(NH3)4SO2(H2O)]2+ with silica gel functionalized with 3-(1-imidazolyl)propyl groups is reported. A 60% surface coverage was obtained in the proportion of the resulting material [=Si(CH2)3imN-Ru(NH3)4SO3]. The anchored Ru(II) complex was characterized and its reactivity investigated. Derivatives of CO, pyrazine, and isonicotinamide have been prepared and characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopies, as well as by chemical means. The [=Si(CH2)3imN-Ru(NH3)4SO4]Cl, obtained through oxidation of the corresponding ruthenium(II) sulfite species, has been characterized and the aquo and the oxalate derivative have been synthesized.

A more direct and efficient route to the syntheses of [Ru(NH3)(4)(X-Y)](BF4)(2), where X-Y can be 2-acetylpyridine (2-acpy) or 2-benzoylpyridine (2-bzpy), based on the reactions of [RuCl(NH3)(5)]Cl-2 with these ortho-substituted azines is described. The [Ru(2-acpy)(NH3)(4)](BF4)(2) and [Ru(NH3)(5)(2-bzpy)](BF4)(2) complexes have a molar conductance of 328 and 292 Ohm(-1) cm(2) mol(-1), respectively, corresponding to a 1:2 species in solution. These complexes showed two intense absorption bands around 620-650 and 380 nm, the energies of which are solvent dependent, decreasing with the increase of the Gutman's donor number of the solvent, and were assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). The complexes have oxidation potentials (Ru-II/III) of +0.380 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and +0.400 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy), and reduction potentials (X-Y0/-) of -1.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-acpy) and -0.950 V vs. Ag/AgCl (2-bzpy) on CF3COOH/NaCF3COO at pH=3.0, scan rate 100 mV s(-1), [Ru]=1.0x10(-3) mol l(-1). Both processes show a coupled chemical reaction. Upon oxidation of the metal center, the MLCT absorption bands are bleached and restored upon subsequent reduction. In order to confirm the structure of the complexes a detailed LH NMR investigation was performed in d(6)-acetone. Further confirmation of the structure was obtained by recording the N-15 NMR spectrum of [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-bzpy)](2+) in d(6)-DMSO using the INEPT pulse sequence improving the sensitivity of N-15 by polarization transfer from the protons to the N-15. The Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) experiments were made qualitatively for [Ru(NH3)(4)(2-acpy)](2+), and showed that H-6 of the pyridine is close to a NH3 proton, which should then be in a cis position, and, hence, confirming that acpy is acting as a bidentate ligand. Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films have been produced from polyaniline and a biphosphinic ruthenium complex, referred to as Rupy. Strong, repulsive interaction between the two components led to a nonlinear change in area per molecule and surface potential with the concentration of Rupy in the mixed film. Molecular interaction was also denoted in the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the Y-type LB transferred films. The Raman spectra of mixed PANI-Rupy films indicated that the degree of oxidation of PANI increased linearly with the concentration of Ropy. With PANI being increasingly oxidized by presence of Rupy, the electroactivity of the mixed films decreased with the amount of Rupy, to become undetectable when the mixed LB film is 501 mol in Rupy. The presence of Rupy caused the electrical properties of the mixed LB films to be less sensitive to environmental changes. The electrical capacitance of a mixed film changed only by 15% when the sample was taken from vacuum to air, whereas the change was 215% for a pure PANI LB film.

The chemistry of the pentadentate edta complexes of ruthenium(III) and (II) with 2-mercaptopyridine (HSpy) has been investigated based on spectroscopic, kinetic and electrochemical techniques. The reaction of [Ru(III)(edta)H2O]- with HSpy proceeds with a specific rate of 1.05 × 104 M-1 S -1 (25°C, I = 0.10 M, acetate buffer), forming a red complex (λmax = 550 nm) which undergoes a relaxation process as a function of pH, with an apparent pKa = 4.35 and kobs = 0.31 S -1. The second reaction depends on the concentration of HSpy and leads to a stable green product (λmax = 630 mn). A pronounced enhancement has been observed in the Raman spectra of the complexes, particularly in the region of the metal-ligand vibrations. The electronic and resonance Raman spectra are consistent with the coordination of HSpy via the sulfur atom in the red complex, and with a chelate binding in the green species. © 1987.

The [Ru(NH3)5(H2O)]2+ and trans-[Ru(NH3)4SO2(H2O)]2+ complexes ions were immobilized on poly(4-vinylpyridine) (4-PVP) through reactions in aqueous solutions. The stability of the imobilized complexes was checked in aqueous solution in the pH 2.0-8.0 range. The number of pyridinic nitrogens in the polymer 4-PVP is 2.80±0.05 mmol/g according to nitrogen elemental analysis. Potentiometric titration experiments showed that the accessible nitrogen, in aqueous medium, was 0.94±0.02 mmol/g with a p Ka value of 7.4±0.2. In addition, ruthenium and sulfate analysis has demonstrated that about 15% of the accessible nitrogen sites are able to coordinate to the metal centers. The characterization of the immobilized complexes was made through diffuse electronic and infrared spectroscopies and differential pulse and cyclic voltammetries. © 1993 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

The photosensitized aquation of pentaammine(pyridine)ruthenium(II) by several dyes has been studied under conditions where only the sensitizers absorb light. The ratio of the quantum yields for ammine and pyridine substitution was the same as that for direct photoaquation. Sensitization was effective with singlet sensitizers Rhodamine-B (17 452 cm -1) and Safranine-T (17 690 cm -1), as well as the triplet sensitizer biacetyl (19 000 cm -1), but no reaction was observed with Neutral-Red (16 900 cm -1). The results indicate that the excited state precursor of the observed photosubstitution in the complex lies in the energy range between 17 000 and 17 700 cm -1.

The syntheses and properties of trans-[Ru(NH3) 4(L)(NO)](BF4)3 (L = isonicotinic acid (inaH) (I) or ina-Tat48-60 (II)) are described. Tat48-60, a cell penetrating peptide fragment of the Tat regulatory protein of the HIV virus, was linked to the ruthenium nitrosyl through inaH. I and II release NO after reduction forming trans-[Ru(NH3)4(L)(H2O)]3 +. The IC50 values against B16-F10 melanoma cells of I and II (21 μmol L- 1 and 23 μmol L- 1, respectively) are close to that of the commercially available cisplatin (33 μmol L- 1) and smaller than similar complexes. The cytotoxicity is assigned to the NO released from I and II. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The synthesis and characterization of ruthenium compounds of the type [RuCl2(P)2(N-N)] [(P)2 = (PPh3) 2, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butano; dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane; N-N = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′dipyridyl (5,5′-mebipy) or 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′dipyridyl (4,4′-mebipy)] are described. The complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, UV-Vis and infrared spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray crystallography. In vitro evaluation of the complexes, using the MTT methodology, revealed their cytotoxic activities in a range of 5.4-15.7 μM against the MDA-MB-231 breast tumor cells and showed that, in this case, they are more active than the reference metallodrug cisplatin. The in vitro antimycobacterial activities of the complexes had their Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for MTB cell growth measured, by the REMA method. The MICs for these complexes were found to be between 12.5 and 25.0 μg/mL. The results are comparable with the second line drug cycloserine (MIC = 12.5-50.0 μg/mL), commonly used in the treatment of TB. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Rifampicin, discovered more than 50 years ago, represents the last novel class of antibiotics introduced for the first-line treatment of tuberculosis. Drugs in this class form part of a 6-month regimen that is ineffective against MDR and XDR TB, and incompatible with many antiretroviral drugs. Investments in R&D strategies have increased substantially in the last decades. However, the number of new drugs approved by drug regulatory agencies worldwide does not increase correspondingly. Ruthenium complexes (SCAR) have been tested in our laboratory and showed promising activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These complexes showed up to 150 times higher activity against MTB than its organic molecule without the metal (free ligand), with low cytotoxicity and high selectivity. In this study, promising results inspired us to seek a better understanding of the biological activity of these complexes. The in vitro biological results obtained with the SCAR compounds were extremely promising, comparable to or better than those for first-line drugs and drugs in development. Moreover, SCAR 1 and 4, which presented low acute toxicity, were assessed by Ames test, and results demonstrated absence of mutagenicity. © 2013 Pavan et al.
