In this paper we extend the well-known Leinfelder–Simader theorem on the essential selfadjointness of singular Schrödinger operators to arbitrary complete Riemannian manifolds. This improves some earlier results of Shubin, Milatovic and others.

Multisensory integration involves bottom-up as well as top-down processes. We investigated the influences of top-down control on the neural responses to multisensory stimulation using EEG recording and time-frequency analyses. Participants were stimulated at the index or thumb of the left hand, using tactile vibrators mounted on a foam cube. Simultaneously they received a visual distractor from a light emitting diode adjacent to the active vibrator (spatially congruent trial) or adjacent to the inactive vibrator (spatially incongruent trial). The task was to respond to the elevation of the tactile stimulus (upper or lower), while ignoring the simultaneous visual distractor. To manipulate top-down control on this multisensory stimulation, the proportion of spatially congruent (vs. incongruent) trials was changed across blocks. Our results reveal that the behavioral cost of responding to incongruent than congruent trials (i.e., the crossmodal congruency effect) was modulated by the proportion of congruent trials. Most importantly, the EEG gamma band response and the gamma-theta coupling were also affected by this modulation of top-down control, whereas the late theta band response related to the congruency effect was not. These findings suggest that gamma band response is more than a marker of multisensory binding, being also sensitive to the correspondence between expected and actual multisensory stimulation. By contrast, theta band response was affected by congruency but appears to be largely immune to stimulation expectancy.

In this paper we propose methods for computing Fresnel integrals based on truncated trapezium rule approximations to integrals on the real line, these trapezium rules modified to take into account poles of the integrand near the real axis. Our starting point is a method for computation of the error function of complex argument due to Matta and Reichel (J Math Phys 34:298–307, 1956) and Hunter and Regan (Math Comp 26:539–541, 1972). We construct approximations which we prove are exponentially convergent as a function of N , the number of quadrature points, obtaining explicit error bounds which show that accuracies of 10−15 uniformly on the real line are achieved with N=12 , this confirmed by computations. The approximations we obtain are attractive, additionally, in that they maintain small relative errors for small and large argument, are analytic on the real axis (echoing the analyticity of the Fresnel integrals), and are straightforward to implement.

The three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulation method has been used to study the dynamic responses of an electrorheological (ER) fluid in oscillatory shear. The structure and related viscoelastic behaviour of the fluid are found to be sensitive to the amplitude of the strain. With the increase of the strain amplitude, the structure formed by the particles changes from isolated columns to sheet-like structures which may be perpendicular or parallel to the oscillating direction. Along with the structure evolution, the field-induced moduli decrease significantly with an increase in strain amplitude. The viscoelastic behaviour of the structures obtained in the cases of different strain amplitudes was examined in the linear response regime and an evident structure dependence of the moduli was found. The reason for this lies in the anisotropy of the arrangement of the particles in these structures. Short-range interactions between the particles cannot be neglected in determining the viscoelastic behaviour of ER fluids at small strain amplitude, especially for parallel sheets. The simulation results were compared with available experimental data and good agreement was reached for most of them.

We propose and analyse a hybrid numerical–asymptotic hp boundary element method (BEM) for time-harmonic scattering of an incident plane wave by an arbitrary collinear array of sound-soft two-dimensional screens. Our method uses an approximation space enriched with oscillatory basis functions, chosen to capture the high-frequency asymptotics of the solution. We provide a rigorous frequency-explicit error analysis which proves that the method converges exponentially as the number of degrees of freedom N increases, and that to achieve any desired accuracy it is sufficient to increase N in proportion to the square of the logarithm of the frequency as the frequency increases (standard BEMs require N to increase at least linearly with frequency to retain accuracy). Our numerical results suggest that fixed accuracy can in fact be achieved at arbitrarily high frequencies with a frequency-independent computational cost, when the oscillatory integrals required for implementation are computed using Filon quadrature. We also show how our method can be applied to the complementary ‘breakwater’ problem of propagation through an aperture in an infinite sound-hard screen.

This paper demonstrates the oscillatory characteristics of electrical signals acquired from two ornamental plant types (Epipremnum pinnatum and Philodendron scandens - Family Araceae), using a noninvasive acquisition system. The electrical signal was recorded using Ag/AgCl superficial electrodes inside a Faraday cage. The presence of the oscillatory electric generator was shown using a classical power spectral density. The Lempel and Ziv complexity measurement showed that the plant signal was not noise despite its nonlinear behavior. The oscillatory characteristics of the signal were explained using a simulated electrical model that establishes that for a frequency range from 5 to 15 Hz, the oscillatory characteristic is higher than for other frequency ranges. All results show that non-invasive electrical plant signals can be acquired with improvement of signal-to-noise ratio using a Faraday cage, and a simple electrical model is able to explain the electrical signal being generated. Attention is a critical mechanism for visual scene analysis. By means of attention, it is possible to break down the analysis of a complex scene to the analysis of its parts through a selection process. Empirical studies demonstrate that attentional selection is conducted on visual objects as a whole. We present a neurocomputational model of object-based selection in the framework of oscillatory correlation. By segmenting an input scene and integrating the segments with their conspicuity obtained from a saliency map, the model selects salient objects rather than salient locations. The proposed system is composed of three modules: a saliency map providing saliency values of image locations, image segmentation for breaking the input scene into a set of objects, and object selection which allows one of the objects of the scene to be selected at a time. This object selection system has been applied to real gray-level and color images and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the system. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we study the behavior of the solutions of nonlinear parabolic problems posed in a domain that degenerates into a line segment (thin domain) which has an oscillating boundary. We combine methods from linear homogenization theory for reticulated structures and from the theory on nonlinear dynamics of dissipative systems to obtain the limit problem for the elliptic and parabolic problems and analyze the convergence properties of the solutions and attractors of the evolutionary equations. This paper describes a collocation method for numerically solving Cauchy-type linear singular integro-differential equations. The numerical method is based on the transformation of the integro-differential equation into an integral equation, and then applying a collocation method to solve the latter. The collocation points are chosen as the Chebyshev nodes. Uniform convergence of the resulting method is then discussed. Numerical examples are presented and solved by the numerical techniques.

A 2D steady model for the annular two-phase flow of water and steam in the steam-generating boiler pipes of a liquid metal fast breeder reactor is proposed The model is based on thin-layer lubrication theory and thin aerofoil theory. The exchange of mass between the vapour core and the liquid film due to evaporation of the liquid film is accounted for using some simple thermodynamics models, and the resultant change of phase is modelled by proposing a suitable Stefan problem Appropriate boundary conditions for the now are discussed The resulting non-lineal singular integro-differential equation for the shape of the liquid film free surface is solved both asymptotically and numerically (using some regularization techniques) Predictions for the length to the dryout point from the entry of the annular regime are made The influence of both the traction tau provided by the fast-flowing vapour core on the liquid layer and the mass transfer parameter eta on the dryout length is investigated
