RACIONAL: A aderência do Helicobacter pylori à mucosa gástrica humana é pré-requisito para sua colonização e o desenvolvimento da gastrite crônica. Os antígenos de grupos sangüíneos, presentes no muco gástrico, são descritos como prováveis receptores da bactéria neste epitélio. A expressão alterada destes antígenos está associada ao desenvolvimento do câncer gástrico. OBJETIVOS: Verificar a ocorrência do Helicobacter pylori e a distribuição da expressão dos antígenos ABH e Lewis correlacionada com as alterações histopatológicas de pacientes com gastrite crônica. PACIENTES E MÉTODOS: Analisaram-se 63 amostras de sangue, saliva e biopsias gástricas de pacientes com gastrite crônica através das técnicas dot-blot-ELISA, imunoperoxidase indireta e colorações do Gram modificado e hematoxilina-eosina. RESULTADOS: Não foram encontradas associações significativas entre a presença da bactéria e os fenótipos de grupos sangüíneos ABH, Lewis e Secretor. Na maioria dos pacientes, a expressão dos antígenos ABH e Lewis, estava restrita principalmente ao epitélio foveolar da mucosa gástrica, concordando com a expressão ao nível salivar. A expressão inapropriada desses antígenos ocorria sempre na infecção pelo Helicobacter pylori e/ou alterações pré-neoplásicas da mucosa gástrica. Em áreas com metaplasia intestinal foi observada a redução da reatividade para os antígenos H e Leb, e principalmente o aumento de Leª. CONCLUSÃO: Alterações no padrão de glicosilação destes antígenos refletem diferentes estágios de diferenciação celular e são marcadores potenciais na avaliação diagnóstica e prognóstica das patologias gástricas.

The Lewis blood group system involves two major antigens, Lea and Leb. Their antigenic determinants are not primary gene products but are synthesized by the transfer of sugar subunits to a precursory chain by a specific enzyme which is the product of the FUT3 gene (Lewis gene). The presence of three FUT3 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (59T > G; 508G > A and 1067T > A) was related to the Lewis phenotype of erythrocytes from 185 individuals of Japanese ancestry living in the town of Tomé-Açu in the Brazilian Amazon region. This relationship was detected using a serological hemagglutination test and the Dot-ELISA assay along with the molecular technique PCR-RFLP. We found that the three SNPs investigated in this study only accounted for a proportion of the Lewis-negative phenotype of the erythrocytes.

Espécies do gênero Strongyloides são importantes parasitas de humanos e animais domésticos e aquelas que parasitam roedores são freqüentemente utilizadas como modelos experimentais para o estudo da estrongiloidíase. S. venezuelensis parasita ratos (Rattus norvegicus) e seu estudo tem permitido o entendimento de mecanismos imunológicos envolvidos na relação parasita–hospedeiro da estrongiloidíase humana e animal. O diagnóstico parasitológico de S. venezuelensis pode ser realizado pela detecção de ovos embrionados nas fezes, com o uso do OPG (ovos por grama de fezes), também empregado no monitoramento da infecção. Entretanto, essa técnica se mostra pouco sensível quando a carga parasitária é leve. Os métodos moleculares aumentam a sensibilidade e a especificidade das análises. A PCR tem se mostrado como uma técnica sensível e precisa na detecção de parasitas em tecidos e fezes de hospedeiros infectados. A fim de comparar a sensibilidade das técnicas de OPG e PCR em ratos Lewis infectados por S. venezuelensis, foram realizados dois protocolos no presente estudo. No Protocolo I foi comparada a sensibilidade das duas técnicas em amostras de ratos Lewis com diferentes cargas parasitárias. A PCR com o emprego par de primers descrito por Dorris et al. (2002) obteve melhores resultados que o OPG nos grupos inoculados com 40 L3, considerada como infecção leve. Entretanto, não foi verificada diferença estatística significativa entre as técnicas (P>0,05), provavelmente por terem sido utilizados poucos animais (n=10). O outro par de primers utilizado foi desenhado a partir de uma seqüência parcial do gene do rDNA de S. venezuelensis e não foi capaz de detectar a presença do DNA do helminto em nenhuma amostra desse grupo. The use of pesticides in Brazil has intensified over the years. And since 2009 it was ranked as the largest market for pesticides worldwide. The consequential diffuse contamination of the environment is therefore due to the increasing number of chemicals of different classes, origins and modes of action. Little is known about the action of pesticides on human health in situations of co-exposure. Possible toxic effects are not restricted to agricultural and industrial workers, but also the general population that may be exposed continuously to its residues in food and water. Although these pesticides are mostly present in the environment at low doses, it must be considered that possible cumulative or synergistic effects may occur when there are concurrent or sustained exposure for two or more of these agents, which can lead to late manifestation of subclinical damages, sometimes irreversible. Thus, the specific objective of this study was to assess the effect of carcinogenesis promotion of a mixture of pesticides at low doses and analyze the phenomena of cell proliferation and apoptosis in rat liver. A total of 50 male Lewis rats was separated into 5 groups for 8 weeks in a medium term hepatocarcinogenesis model. The three different classes of pesticides (dieldrin, dicofol, endosulfan, dichlorvos and permethrin), whose residues were detected by ANVISA during the period from 2001 to 2005 in tomatoes cultures, were added to the feed of rats initiated to hepatocarcinogenesis with diethylnitrosamine (DEN- 200mg/kg ip). We used two different mixtures, one with no toxic effects at doses (MEX1) referring to the NOEL (no-observed-effect level) and another at doses LOEL / LEL / LOAEL (Lowest-observed-effect level / Lowest-effect level / Lowest -observed-adverse-effect level), to the installation of adverse effects (MEX2), derived from chronic studies. The NbCl5 being a strong electrophile, is a potential candidate to act as a Lewis acid, and therefore it mediates various organic reactions. For this reason, it has received continuous attention by Brazilian researchers, especially in recent decades, since Brazil holds the largest reserves of niobium, besides being the largest producer of this element. The Michael addition reaction is one of the most widely used for forming carbon-carbon bonds and takes place by the addition of nucleophiles to activated olefins. Although this type of reaction is usually catalyzed by base, there are reports in the literature on the use of various Lewis acids in this type of reaction. The synthesis of enamines based acetilenodicarboxilates and amines, aromatic or alkyl, by Michael addition reaction is quite interesting, since these are valuable synthetic intermediates for the synthesis of heterocyclic and they are used in multicomponent reactions. The derivatives of anilino-fumarate also have a great potential for medical application. The Brazilian federal government Agency for Health Surveillance detected pesticide residues in fresh food available for consumers all over the country. The current study investigated the effects of a mixture of some of those pesticides (dichlorvos, dicofol, dieldrin, endosulfan, and permethrin) on the reproductive system of Sprague-Dawley (SD), Wistar (WT), and Lewis (LEW) rats. Female rats from each strain were randomized into three experimental groups and were fed a control diet or diets added with pesticides mixture at their respective no-observed-effect level (NOEL)/no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) (low dose) (mg/kg/d): dichlorvos (0.23), dicofol (0.5), dieldrin (0.025), endosulfan (0.7), permethrin (5), or lowest-observed-effect level (LOEL)/lowest-effect level (LEL)/ lowest-observed-adverse-effect level (LOAEL) (toxically effective dose) (mg/kg/d): dichlorvos (2.3), dicofol (2.1), dieldrin (0.05), endosulfan (3.8), and permethrin (25) as reported in the literature. Euthanasia was performed between wk 10 and 12, during the estrous stage. Decreased body weights gain (SD and WT) and increased liver weights (SD, WT, and LEW) were observed in each strain fed the pesticides mixture at the higher levels. At that dose level, rat strains also varied in their responses regarding the estrous cycle, hormonal levels, and number of developing ovarian follicles. The studied mixture of pesticides was found to interfere with the female reproductive system when individual pesticides were mixed above a certain level, indicating a threshold exists for each of the strains studied.

The role played by H+ hydrido iodocarbonyl and H- hydrido carbonyl ruthenium catalysts in the different catalytic steps of hydroformylation and hydroesterification of olefins, and in the homologation of alcohols has been investigated. The H- hydrido carbonyl species are mainly involved in the activation of olefins and in the hydrogenation of the acyl intermediates to aldehydes and alcohols, whereas the H+ hydrido iodocarbonyl derivatives are involved in the activation of alcohols and other oxygenated substrates, and in their carbonylation to esters. The cooperation between the two species, possible under particular reaction conditions, results in an improvement of the selectivity towards homologation (carbonylation plus hydrogenation) products. Heterogeneous Lewis acid promoters, easily recyclable from the reaction mixture, have also been successfully used in the hydrocarbonylation of alcohols, resulting in an increase of the carbonylation and homologation products. A reaction pathway in agreement with the experimental results is discussed. © 1989.

Em razão ao uso intensivo e por ser altamente não-degradável, o metal Cd (II) tem causado uma grande preocupação na sociedade moderna devido a sua capacidade de acumular-se em matrizes ambientais manifestando toxicidade. O projeto teve como objetivo o desenvolvimento da síntese da Sílica Mesoporosa para o ancoramento do ligante Ácido Rubeânico sobre a superfície do material. A caracterização do mesmo, por espectroscopia na região do infravermelho (FTIR), após a etapa de funcionalização indicou a presença de grupamento amina, com banda em 3350 cm-1, bandas na região de 2940 e 2850 cm-1 atribuídas a grupos metileno e a atenuação da banda C-Cl (700 cm-1), devido ao ancoramento da molécula do ligante. O material foi aplicado em experimentos de batelada e o efeito de tempo de contato e do pH sobre a adsorção de íons Cd (II) foi avaliado. O material apresentou cinética rápida, a qual foi alcançada em 1 minuto e a maior adsorção foi atingida em pH 6 (próximo ao ponto de carga zero) para ambos os metais. As condições ótimas obtidas foram aplicadas para a determinação da capacidade máxima de adsorção. Os dados obtidos da isoterma de adsorção foram aplicados à Equação Linearizada de Langmuir, fornecendo 0,03 mmol g-1, com o coeficiente de determinação dos dados sendo R² de 0,9961. Na segunda etapa, o material modificado foi aplicado em sistema de fluxo contínuo, ajustando as melhores condições como massa de amostra, tipos de eluente bem como o volume de eluato. The objectives of this work were performing the biometric characterization of seed Chloroleucon foliosolum (Benth) G. P. (Lewis) from the municipality Ituaçu - BA, and analyze methods of scarification and temperature on germination. The seeds were characterized according to measurements of length, width and thickness, weight of thousand seeds, and water content. Were employed methods of scarification with sandpaper and sulfuric acid for 15 and 30 minutes, and not scarified seeds, combined with germination temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. Percentage and germination speed index, and percentage of primary root protrusion, abnormal seedlings, hard seeds and dead seeds were evaluated. The means of length, width and thickness was 6.03, 4.30 and 3.47 mm, respectively. The weight of a thousand seeds was 67.3 g with water content of 6.1%. Whereas the percentage germination with normal seedling, the method of scarification with sulfuric acid for 15 or 30 minutes combined to germination temperatures of 25 or 30 °C were effective in overcoming dormancy of Chloroleucon foliolosum.

Although Lewis and Clark literature has proliferated in the last decade, few works have added scholarly discourse to this field of study. The highly focused Venereal Disease and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, however, will likely stand out on the Lewis and Clark bookshelf as an important contribution.
