The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of soil management systems on the bulk density, chemical soil properties, and on the soil microbial activity on a Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (Oxisol). Soil samples were collected from plots under the following management conditions: a) natural dense "cerrado" vegetation (savanna); b) degraded Brachiaria decumbens pasture, 20 years old; c) no-tillage treatment with annual crop sequence (bean, corn, soybean and dark-oat in continuous rotation), 8 years old; d) conventional tillage treatment with crop residues added to the soil, and annual crop sequence, 10 years old. The continuous use of no-tillage system resulted in an increase in microbial biomass and decrease in soil basal respiration, therefore displaying evident long-term effects on the increase of soil C content. The no-tillage system also provided an improvement in bulk density and chemical properties of the soil. Hence, the no-tillage management system could be an alternative for the conservation and maintenance of physical and chemical conditions and the productive potential of "cerrado" soils.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of in-plane coronary artery motion on coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and coronary MR vessel wall imaging. Free-breathing, navigator-gated, 3D-segmented k-space turbo field echo ((TFE)/echo-planar imaging (EPI)) coronary MRA and 2D fast spin-echo coronary vessel wall imaging of the right coronary artery (RCA) were performed in 15 healthy adult subjects. Images were acquired at two different diastolic time periods in each subject: 1) during a subject-specific diastasis period (in-plane velocity <4 cm/second) identified from analysis of in-plane coronary artery motion, and 2) using a diastolic trigger delay based on a previously implemented heart-rate-dependent empirical formula. RCA vessel wall imaging was only feasible with subject-specific middiastolic acquisition, while the coronary wall could not be identified with the heart-rate-dependent formula. For coronary MRA, RCA border definition was improved by 13% (P < 0.001) with the use of subject-specific trigger delay (vs. heart-rate-dependent delay). Subject-specific middiastolic image acquisition improves 3D TFE/EPI coronary MRA, and is critical for RCA vessel wall imaging.

Rapeseed (Brassica napus) oils differing in cultivar, sites of growth, and harvest year were characterized by fatty acid concentrations and carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen stable isotope analyses of bulk oils (delta(13)C(bulk), delta(2)H(bulk), delta(18)O(bulk) values) and individual fatty acids (delta(13)C(FA)). The delta(13)C(bulk), delta(2)H(bulk), and delta(18)O(bulk) values were determined by continuous flow combustion and high-temperature conversion elemental analyzer isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA/IRMS, TC-EA/IRMS). The delta(13)C(FA) values were determined using gas chromatography-combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS). For comparison, other C(3) vegetable oils rich in linolenic acid (flax and false flax oils) and rich in linoleic acid (poppy, sunflower, and safflower oils) were submitted to the same chemical and isotopic analyses. The bulk and molecular delta(13)C values were typical for C(3) plants. The delta(13)C value of palmitic acid (delta(13)C(16:0)) and n-3 alpha-linolenic acid (delta(13)C(18:3n-3)) differed (p < 0.001) between rape, flax, and poppy oils. Also within species, significant differences of delta(13)C(FA) were observed (p < 0.01). The hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of rape oil differed between cultivars (p < 0.05). Major differences in the individual delta(13)C(FA) values were found. A plant-specific carbon isotope fractionation occurs during the biosynthesis of the fatty acids and particularly during desaturation of C(18) acids in rape and flax. Bulk oil and specific fatty acid stable isotope analysis might be useful in tracing dietary lipids differing in their origin.

Contractors, engineers, owners and manufacturers want to be certain that a new product or procedure will yield beneficial results when compared to the current method of construction. The following research was conducted in order to compare the performance of epoxy coated dowel bars to dowel bars of alternative shapes and materials such as stainless steel and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP). Research was also done on the effect that dowel bar spacing has on the performance of concrete pavements. Four phases of this research are described in this report.

The authenticity of vegetable oils consumed in Slovenia and Croatia was investigated by carbon isotope analysis of the individual fatty acids by the use of gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS), and through carbon isotope analysis of the bulk oil. The fatty acids from samples of olive, pumpkin, sunflower, maize, rape, soybean, and sesame oils were separated by alkaline hydrolysis and derivatized to methyl esters for chemical characterization by capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) prior to isotopic analysis. Enrichment in heavy carbon isotope (C-13) of th, bulk oil and of the individual fatty acids are related to (1) a thermally induced degradation during processing (deodorization, steam washing, or bleaching), (2) hydrolytic rancidity (lipolysis) and oxidative rancidity of the vegetable oils during storage, and (3) the potential blend with refined oil or other vegetable oils. The impurity or admixture of different oils may be assessed from the delta C-13(16:0) VS. delta C-13(18:1) covariations. The fatty acid compositions of Slovenian and Croatian olive oils are compared with those from the most important Mediterranean producer countries (Spain, Italy, Greece, and France).

Lake Neuchatel is a medium sized, hard-water lake, lacking varved sediments, situated in the western Swiss Lowlands at the foot of the Jura Mountains. Stable isotope data (delta(18)O and delta(13)C) from both bulk carbonate and ostracode calcite in an 81 cm long, radiocarbon-dated sediment core represent the last 1500 years of Lake Neuchatel's environmental history. Comparison between this isotopic and other palaeolimnologic data (mineralogical, geochemical, palynological, etc.) helps to differentiate between anthropogenic and natural factors most recently affecting the lake. An increase in lacustrine productivity (450-650AD ca), inferred from the positive trend in delta(13)C values of bulk carbonate, is related to medieval forest clearances and the associated nutrient budget changes. A negative trend in both the bulk carbonate and ostracode calcite delta(18)O values between approximately 1300 and 1500AD, is tentatively interpreted as due to a cooling in mean air temperature at the transition from the Medieval Warm Period to the Little Ice Age. Negative trends in bulk carbonate delta(18)O and delta(13)C values through the uppermost sediments, which have no equivalent in ostracode calcite isotopic values, are concomitant with the recent onset of eutrophication in the lake. Isotopic disequilibrium during calcite precipitation, probably due to kinetic factors in periods of high productivity is postulated as the mechanism to explain the associated negative isotopic trends, although the effect of a shift of the calcite precipitation towards the warmer months cannot be excluded.

In this master's thesis, material characteristics which includes material database will be developed, through which will be managed process device deliveries device selections. The analysed bulk materials exact values serve as basic data when choosing glass- and dried product industry raw material equipment solutions. In this study, the material database function structure will be divided into classified bulk materials characteristics and process device guidelines and planning which they are based on. In order to achieve the best possible advantage in use of the material database, the raw material handling with the process equipment has to be controlled with the help of database bulk material information. With the help of material database, the personnel of the company will find the needed material and device information to implement the processes. The structure of the database enables adding of information, and hence the database will be always kept updated. The material database uses free PhpOpenDatabase software programme, which adapts itself flexibly with the software and requirements of the company. The material frame and considered features of the material database were determined by the requirements of the company's device technology. National and international classifications were used as help. The collected material information was analysed and the correspondence between internal study results and found classifications were determined. As presented before, on the grounds of chosen and specified material features, also the controllability of device selecting and solutions was improved with device-specific screening and planning guidelines. As material frame of the material database was chosen ANSI/CEMA Standard 550. Its almost 1000 bulk materials form an extensive database frame. Over 600 of these raw materials have been determined according to classification. However, the most important ones are the materials of glass- and dried material plants, which consist of the last part of material frame. The analysis will be sustained and material information will be completed primarily of material part with test run in one's own material laboratory.
