Following on our previous year’s work on ‘Effect of hydrologic restoration on the habitat of the Cape Sable seaside sparrow (CSSS)’, we presented first year results at the Cape Sable seaside sparrow – fire planning workshop at Everglades National Park in December 2003. Later, with almost the same set of crews as in the previous year, we started field work in the first week of January and continued till May 26, 2004. Protocols for sampling topography and vegetation in 2004 were identical to the previous year. In the early season, we completed topographic surveys along two remaining transects, B and E (~16.5 km), and vegetation surveys along three transects, D, E and F (~10.8 km), leaving only the vegetation sampling on transects B and C to be completed in 2005. During April and May, vegetation sampling was completed at 230 census sites, making the total of 409 CSSS census sites for which we have complete vegetation data. We updated data sets from both 2003 and 2004, and analyzed them together using cluster analysis, ordination, weighted-averaging regression and analysis of variance, as we had in 2003. Additionally, we used logistic regression to examine the effect of vegetation structural parameters on the recent occurrence of CSSS. We also analyzed vegetation observations recorded by the sparrow census team in 1981 and annually between 1992 and 2004 to assess historical patterns of vegetation change in CSSS habitat.

[EN] The 70 km of white sandy beaches of Boa Vista island in Cape Verde harbours one of the largest rookeries of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta. From middle June to early October, approximately 2000 to 4000 females lay up to 20000 nests annually. However, female beach selection, nesting success and nest density strongly varies among beaches and spatial patterns of nest abundance and distribution are relatively constant among seasons. The numbers of nesting activities and nests have been recorded along all beaches of the island during four nesting seasons (2007-2010)

The current study introduces a novel synthetic avenue for the preparation of profluorescent nitroxides via nitrile imine-mediated tetrazole-ene cycloaddition (NITEC). The photoinduced cycloaddition was performed under metal-free, mild conditions allowing the preparation of a library of the nitroxide functionalized pyrazolines and corresponding methoxyamines. High reaction rates and full conversion were observed, with the presence of the nitroxide having no significant impact on the cycloaddition performance. The formed products were investigated with respect to their photophysical properties in order to quantify their “switch on/off” behavior. The fluorescence quenching performance is strongly dependent on the distance between the chromophore and the free radical spin as demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Highest levels of fluorescence quenching were achieved for pyrazolines with the nitroxide directly fused to the chromophore. Importantly, the pyrazoline profluorescent nitroxides were shown to efficiently act as sensors for redox/radical processes.

The sciaenid Protonibea diacanthus is a large, long-lived predatory fish of inshore northern Australian waters, which forms annual aggregations that are fished extensively by traditional (subsistence) and recreational fishers. There are now widespread concerns that the resource is being overexploited. Indigenous fishers of the Cape York Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) relate that large adult fish (up to 1500 mm total length (TL)) made up the bulk of the catch from the sciaenid aggregations until about 1994. In contrast, sexually mature P. diacanthus comprised only a small component (12 fish out of 270=4.4%) examined in a 1999–2000 sampling programme that was biased towards the largest individuals available. At 790 mm TL, the minimum size at first maturity for female P. diacanthus in this study is much smaller than the 920 mm TL reported previously in Queensland waters. Developing ovaries were observed in specimens sampled from sciaenid aggregations which formed in NPA waters between May and September 2000. However, no fish with ripe or spent gonads were found in the study, so the current timing and location of the spawning season for P. diacanthus in the region remain unknown. Food items observed in the analysis of the diet of P. diacanthus from the NPA included a variety of teleosts and invertebrates. The range of animal taxa represented in the prey items support the description of an ‘opportunistic predator’ attributed to the species. In our sampling, the stomach contents of fish caught during the time of the aggregation events did not differ from those observed at other times of the year. A total of 114 P. diacanthus were tagged and released at aggregation sites during the study period, and 3 fish (2.6%) were subsequently recaptured. The low rate of tag returns from the wild stock tagging programme, both in this study (2.6%) and from recreational fisher tag/release programmes for the sciaenid elsewhere in Queensland (6.5%), were not explained by tag loss nor mortality, given the high retention rate of tags and the zero mortality seen in tank trials. In response to the biological findings from this study, indigenous community councils of the NPA imposed a 2-year fishing moratorium for P. diacanthus. Surveys at aggregation sites in 2002 and 2003 established that much larger fish (mean size 103.5 cm TL) were again present on the grounds, albeit in very low numbers. These recent preliminary results highlight the critical need for continued monitoring and management of the P. diacanthus fishery in the NPA, if prospects for resource recovery are to be realised. The NPA initiative has provided a rare opportunity to negotiate a co-management strategy, based on scientific data and traditional knowledge, for the recovery of a cultural and economically significant fished resource.

ON Saturday February 16, 1980 total solar eclipse Occurred for a period of 2-3 min in a belt of 135 km during the eclipse from 14'17 to 17'00 hrs across peninsular India. The city of Bangalore, being just outside this belt, had witnessed 92% eclipse for about 2. 1/2 min at the peak period of 15.44 hr at which time a temperature drop of 2' C and a considerable dimness of the light were experienced. In view of the interest in our laboratory on biochemical adaptation under conditions of environmental stress, we designed an experiment to study the possible changes in enzyme activities during the solar eclipse on February 16, 1980.

Volatility-hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyzer measurements were used to infer the composition of sub-100 nm diameter Southern Ocean marine aerosols at Cape Grim in November and December 2007. This study focuses on a short-lived high sea spray aerosol (SSA) event on 7–8 December with two externally mixed modes in the Hygroscopic Growth Factor (HGF) distributions (90% relative humidity (RH)), one at HGF > 2 and another at HGF~1.5. The particles with HGF > 2 displayed a deliquescent transition at 73–75% RH and were nonvolatile up to 280°C, which identified them as SSA particles with a large inorganic sea-salt fraction. SSA HGFs were 3–13% below those for pure sea-salt particles, indicating an organic volume fraction (OVF) of up to 11–46%. Observed high inorganic fractions in sub-100 nm SSA is contrary to similar, earlier studies. HGFs increased with decreasing particle diameter over the range 16–97 nm, suggesting a decreased OVF, again contrary to earlier studies. SSA comprised up to 69% of the sub-100 nm particle number, corresponding to concentrations of 110–290 cm−3. Air mass back trajectories indicate that SSA particles were produced 1500 km, 20–40 h upwind of Cape Grim. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray spectrometry measurements of sub-100 nm aerosols collected from the same location, and at the same time, displayed a distinct lack of sea salt. Results herein highlight the potential for biases in TEM analysis of the chemical composition of marine aerosols.

The synthesis of (±)-3a,4,4,7a-tetramethylhydrindan-2-one 8, containing three contiguous quaternary carbons as present in thapsanes, and the total synthesis of thaps-7(15)-ene 6 and thaps-6-ene 7, probable biogenetic precursors of thapsanes, have been achieved. Thus, orthoester Claisen rearrangement of cyclogeraniol 14, followed by hydrolysis of the resultant ester 16 furnished the eneacid 13. Copper sulfate-catalysed intramolecular cyclopropanation of the diazo ketone 18, derived from the acid 13, generated the cyclopropyl ketone 12. Regiospecific reductive cleavage of cyclopropyl ketone 12 furnished the hydrindanone 8, whereas the diazo ketone 26 furnished the hydrindanone 28avia the cyclopropyl ketone 27. Wittig methylenation of the hydrindanone 28a furnished thaps-7(15)-ene 6, which on isomerisation gave thaps-6-ene 7. Allylic oxidation of thaps-6-ene furnished the thapsenone 31, a degradation product of the natural thapsane 1b.

Thermal activation of the normal Claisen products, the enones 4 7 and 14 in the presence of a catalytic amount of propionic acid generated the isomeric enones 6 9 and 15 via the sequential intramolecular ene-reaction of the enol tautomer followed by 1,5-hydrogen transfer (or retro ene-reaction) of the resultant acetyl cyclopropane intermediate. conversion of the enones 9 and 15 into the corresponding cyclohexenones 10 and 16 established the structures of the rearrangement products.

Biotransformation of 3 beta-acetoxy-19-hydroxycholest-5-ene (19-HCA, 6 g) by Moraxella sp. was studied. Estrone (712 mg) was the major metabolite formed. Minor metabolites identified were 5 alpha-androst-1-en-19-ol-3,17-dione (33 mg), androst-4-en-19-ol-3,17-dione (58 mg), androst-4-en-9 alpha,19-diol-3,17-dione (12 mg), and androstan-19-ol-3,17-dione (1 mg). Acidic metabolites were not formed. Time course experiments on the fermentation of 19-HCA indicated that androst-4-en-19-ol-3,17-dione was the major metabolite formed during the early stages of incubation. However with continuing fermentation its level dropped, with a concomitant increase in estrone. Fermentation of 19-HCA in the presence of specific inhibitors or performing the fermentation for a shorter period (48 h) did not result in the formation of acidic metabolites. Resting-cell experiments carried out with 19-HCA (200 mg) in the presence of alpha,alpha'-bipyridyl led to the isolation of three additional metabolites, viz., cholestan-19-ol-3-one (2 mg), cholest-4-en-19-ol-3-one (10 mg), and cholest-5-en-3 beta,19-diol (12 mg). Similar results were also obtained when n-propanol was used instead of alpha,alpha'-bipyridyl. Resting cells grown on 19-HCA readily converted both 5 alpha-androst-1-en-19-ol-3,17-dione and androst-4-en-19-ol-3,17-dione into estrone. Partially purified 1,2-dehydrogenase from steroid-induced Moraxella cells transformed androst-4-en-19-ol-3,17-dione into estrone and formaldehyde in the presence of phenazine methosulfate, an artificial electron acceptor. These results suggest that the degradation of the hydrocarbon side chain of 19-HCA does not proceed via C-22 phenolic acid intermediates and complete removal of the C-17 side chain takes place prior to the aromatization of the A ring in estrone. The mode of degradation of the sterol side chain appears to be through the fission of the C-17-C-20 bond. On the basis of these observations, a new pathway for the formation of estrone from 19-HCA in Moraxella sp. has been proposed.

Acid-catalysed thermal rearrangement of 4-aryl-4-methylhex-5-en-2-ones (products of the Claisen rearrangement of beta-methylcinnamyl alcohols and 2-methoxypropene) to isomeric 5-aryl-4-methylhex-5-en-2-ones via an intramolecular ene reaction of the enol tautomer followed by a retro ene reaction of the resultant acetylcyclopropane is described. Formation of the known diketone 13 via the ozonolysis of the rearrangement product 10, confirmed the structures of the rearranged enones, whereas formation of the enone 15 containing an extra methyl group on the styrene double bond confirmed the proposed mechanism. Finally, the rearrangement has been extended to the formal synthesis of beta-cuparenone 20 via the enones 22 and 23.

Details of the first total syntheses of the sesquiterpenes myltayl-8(12)-ene and 6-epijunicedran-8-ol are described. The aldehyde 13, obtained by Claisen rearrangement of cyclogeraniol, was transformed into the dienones 12 and 18. Boron trifluoride-diethyl ether mediated cyclization and rearrangement transformed the dienones 12 and 18 into the tricyclic ketones 16 and 17, efficiently creating three and four contiguous quaternary carbon atoms, respectively. Wittig methylenation of 16 furnished (+/-)-myltayl-8(12)-ene (11), whereas reduction of the ketone 17 furnished (+/-)-6-epijunicedranol (23).

Con el propósito de identificar fuentes de resistencia para la enfermedad tizón sureño, ( SclerotiumrolfsiiSacc ), 16 genotipos de frijol negro ( Phaseolusvulgaris L .), fueron examinados por su reacción a la infección inducida. La investigación se llevó a en los invernaderos de la Universidad Nacional Agraria, ubicado en el km 12 ½ Carretera Norte en los meses de Junio y Julio de los años 2004 y 2005. Para determinar la efectividad del patógeno se realizó una prueba de patogenicidad y virulencia utilizando 3 aislados Arenal Masatepe ( AM), Sabanita Masatepe (SM) y Ojoche Masatepe ( OM) provenient es del departamento de Masaya con 3 niveles de inoculo (1.0 , 2.0 , 3.0 ml, de solución hongo PDA - agua), sobre el cultivar susceptible de frijol criollo. Al final de esta prueba se determinó que el aislado AM en 3.0 ml de solución patogénica provoco la mayor infección. Una vez determinado el mejor aislado y nivel de inóculo seproced ió a la evaluación de los 16 genotipos. El experimento se estableció bajo condiciones de invernadero utilizando un diseño completamente al azar (DCA) con tres réplicas de 10 plantas cada una. La inoculación de los materiales se realizó a los 15 dds y la ev aluación de la enfermedad a los 22 , 24, 26, 28,30 y 32 dds utilizando la escala Estándar para la Evaluación de Germoplasma de frijol común propuesta por el CIAT(1987). El experimento fue repetido una vez para obtener mayor confiabilidad de los resultados. Para la medición de los niveles de resistencia se calculó el área bajo de la curva de progreso de la enfermedad (ABCPE) así como el análisis de vari anza y separación de medias (LSD ∞=0.05). En ambos experimentándose observaron diferencias significativas de severidad entre los genotipos evaluados. La mayor severidad la presento el material NEGRO INIPAF así como por el TESTIGO. Los materiales con mayor grado de resistencia en el primer experimento fueron: B 2059 , INTA Cardenas, MN 13074 - 4 y MN 133 37 - 26; en el segundo ensayo el genotipo NEGRO INIFAP y el TESTIGO presentaron mayor grado de severidad, el mayor grado de resistencia se observó en los genotipo s: MN 13337 - 26, MN 13071 - 56, B 2059, MN 13074 - 4, INTA Cardenas, B 2028, B 2067.
