This paper reflects the changing notion of the Virtual University and its realization. We introduce an approach from the Sociology of Science and Technology (STS) which analyses the construction of the “student as a user” as seen through the “eyes of designers”. We ask how social relations are built into technological artefacts. In showing how socio-technical developments transcend sometimes contradict and various notions of “the student” we discuss difficulties and chances of bridging the gap between designers of e-learning-artefacts and its assumed addresses. Im Rahmen der wissenschaftlichen Ausbildung sind Praktika vielerorts ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Lehre. Sie zeichnen sich im Regelfall dadurch aus, dass die Studierenden die gestellten Versuche an speziell ausgestatteten Laborplätzen durchführen, was neben extrem hohen Kosten zu einer Begrenzung der maximalen Teilnehmerzahl führt. In diesem Zusammenhang scheint es auf den ersten Blick nicht möglich, Konzepte einer Virtuellen Universität umzusetzen, da die Studierenden „vor Ort“ sein müssen. In diesem Dokument stellen wir das so genannte Mobile Hardware-Praktikum vor, das den Studierenden die Teilnahme zu jeder Zeit und von jedem beliebigen Ort aus erlaubt und dennoch ein Gefühl der Präsenz im Labor vermittelt. Gleichzeitig kann weit mehr als 100 Studierenden die Teilnahme ermöglicht werden. Erreicht wird dies durch ein speziell für diesen Zweck entwickeltes webbasiertes Learning Management System in Kombination mit Hardware-Komponenten, die einem voll ausgestatteten Labor-Arbeitsplatz entsprechen und den Teilnehmern für die Zeit des Praktikums auf Leihbasis zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Die Experimente werden von den teilnehmenden Gruppen in Eigenregie gelöst und elektronisch abgegeben. Die Bewertung erfolgt ebenfalls elektronisch.(DIPF/Orig.)

This research has been conducted within the realm of where today’s digital media society and the timeless concept of cultural identity overlap. The aim of this thesis is to explore the nature of online cultural identity management. By focusing on the social media platform, Pinterest, this study considers the food-pinning behavior of a group of Americans living in Finland and connects their online actions with their cultural identity. Through an examination of Pinterest as a social space, and even a third place, the relative theoretical literature provides and interesting background for a contemporary discussion on the matter. Literature on food as a cultural marker is also brought into consideration. Using the methods of introspection and an adapted version of virtual ethnography, a study was conducted, and ultimately, the analysis of data obtained from the Pinterest boards of ten individuals shows that the vast majority of food-related information in this setting is US-sourced. A questionnaire provides further insight into the individuals’ Pinterest usage. I argue that pinning is an act of online identity management, whether it is a conscious act or a situational effect, and that using Pinterest maintains and even strengthens these individuals’ cultural identity as Americans. This study adds to current discussions pertaining to transnationalism, globalization, and online cultural identity, as well as opens channels for further research on this dynamic topic, which is needed to understand ourselves as cultural beings in the digital age.

Terms like Internet, cyberspace, virtual reality, in short, globalization, have been frequently words for all of us, in recent years. This refers to the phenomenon that has shaken the people of this world. Are rapidly changing due to technological advances and complex levels reaching relations between countries, corporations, partnerships and people.The attempt to understand the phenomenon of globalization is compounded when we try to understand the term, coined by Marshall McLuhan.McLuhan was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and studied at the Universities of Manitoba and Cambridge, the latter of which he received his degree of Doctor of Philosophy specializing in English Literature. He taught at the universities of Wisconsin and St. Louis and University of the Assumption and Saint Michael's College, University of Toronto, where he was director of the Center for Culture and Technology.Marshall McLuhan and B. R. Powers, wrote the play, The Village Global1. The universe has become a village is the future predicted for them in the 60's. Today reality has overtaken the theory. However, this phenomenon is presented in this work, so whimsical style reminiscent of Jules Verne, but does not clarify the content of the term. While we believe that in the past there were attempts; globalize these attempts were very different from what we understand by globalization.

El objetivo principal de este proyecto es confeccionar material didáctico adicional audiovisual (vídeos) en inglés y en otros idiomas extranjeros para proporcionarlo a los estudiantes del Grado en Farmacia con la finalidad de mejorar su capacitación. Los objetivos alcanzados fueron: 1) Se confeccionaron el material didáctico y todos los documentos necesarios para el desarrollo del proyecto. 2) La mayoría del alumnado que aprovechó el material puso de manifiesto su satisfacción y la utilidad con respecto al proyecto y al material audiovisual. La franja de alumnado que no vio el material no lo hizo en más de la mitad de los casos por falta de tiempo. Según los resultados obtenidos, el grado de satisfacción es mayor entre el alumnado que vio más vídeos. 3) El proyecto tuvo un impacto positivo en el rendimiento de los alumnos. Este resultado no se observa si se comparan las calificaciones medias del grupo experimental y del grupo control, porque las calificaciones de la docencia práctica tienen de por sí una media elevada y eso no permite la apreciación del impacto positivo de esa variable. Lo que sí modificó la aplicación de este proyecto en la docencia práctica es la calidad del grupo experimental, ya que las calificaciones se concentran más alrededor del valor medio.

O completo desenvolvimento larval de Notolopas brasiliensis é descrito, a partir de material criado em laboratório, com ênfase na morfologia externa de Majoidea e comparado aos demais gêneros de Pisidae. O desenvolvimento larval de N. brasiliensis consiste em dois estágios de zoea e um de megalopa. A duração media de cada estágio foi de 4.2 ± 1.0 dias para a Zoea I e 3.8 ± 0.7 dias para a Zoea II, a megalopa aparece entre 8.1 ± 0.4 dias após a eclosão. Os caracteres previamente utilizados para definir as formas larvais de Pisidae ou são simplesiomórficos ou altamente homoplásticos. Foi observado que não existe um conjunto de caracteres capazes de definir Pisidae até o presente.Contudo foi mostrado que uma combinação de caracteres pode ser utilizada para diferenciar Notolopas dos demais gêneros da família.

The use of virtual social networks (VSNs) has been prevalent among consumers worldwide. Numerous studies have investigated various aspects of VSNs. However, these studies have mainly focused on students and young adults as they were early adopters of these innovative networks. A search of the literature revealed there has been a paucity of research on adult consumers’ use of VSNs. This research study addressed this gap in the literature by examining the determinants of engagement in VSNs among adult consumers in Singapore. The objectives of this study are to empirically investigate the determinants of engagement in VSNs and to offer theoretical insights into consumers’ preference and usage of VSNs. This study tapped upon several theories developed in the discipline of technology and innovation adoption. These were Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation, Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Conceptual Framework of Individual Innovation Adoption by Frambach and Schillewaert (2002), Enhanced Model of Innovation Adoption by Talukder (2011), Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) and the Information Systems (IS) Success Model. The proposed research model, named the Media Usage Model (MUM), is a framework rooted in innovation diffusion and IS theories. The MUM distilled the essence of these established models and thus provides an updated, lucid explanation of engagement in VSNs. A cross-sectional, online social survey was conducted to collect quantitative data to examine the validity of the proposed research model. Multivariate data analysis was carried out on a data set comprising 806 usable responses by utilizing SPSS, and for structural equation modeling AMOS and SmartPLS. The results indicate that consumer attitude towards VSNs is significantly and positively influenced by: three individual factors – hedonic motivation, incentives and experience; two system characteristics – system quality and information quality; and one social factor – social bonding. Consumer demographics were found to influence people’s attitudes towards VSNs. In addition, consumer experience and attitude towards VSNs significantly and positively influence their usage of VSNs. The empirical data supported the proposed research model, explaining 80% of variance in attitude towards VSNs and 45% of variance in usage of VSNs. Therefore, the MUM achieves a definite contribution to theoretical knowledge of consumer engagement in VSNs by deepening and broadening our appreciation of the intricacies related to use of VSNs in Singapore. This study’s findings have implications for customer service management, services marketing and consumer behavior. These findings also have strategic implications for maximizing efficient utilization and effective management of VSNs by businesses and operators. The contributions of this research are: firstly, shifting the boundaries of technology or innovation adoption theories from research on employees to consumers as well as the boundaries of Internet usage or adoption research from students to adults, which is also known as empirical generalization; secondly, highlighting the issues associated with lack of significance of social factors in adoption research; and thirdly, augmenting information systems research by integrating important antecedents for success in information systems.

En el campo de la medicina clínica es crucial poder determinar la seguridad y la eficacia de los fármacos actuales y además acelerar el descubrimiento de nuevos compuestos activos. Para ello se llevan a cabo ensayos de laboratorio, que son métodos muy costosos y que requieren mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, la bioinformática puede facilitar enormemente la investigación clínica para los fines mencionados, ya que proporciona la predicción de la toxicidad de los fármacos y su actividad en enfermedades nuevas, así como la evolución de los compuestos activos descubiertos en ensayos clínicos. Esto se puede lograr gracias a la disponibilidad de herramientas de bioinformática y métodos de cribado virtual por ordenador (CV) que permitan probar todas las hipótesis necesarias antes de realizar los ensayos clínicos, tales como el docking estructural, mediante el programa BINDSURF. Sin embargo, la precisión de la mayoría de los métodos de CV se ve muy restringida a causa de las limitaciones presentes en las funciones de afinidad o scoring que describen las interacciones biomoleculares, e incluso hoy en día estas incertidumbres no se conocen completamente. En este trabajo abordamos este problema, proponiendo un nuevo enfoque en el que las redes neuronales se entrenan con información relativa a bases de datos de compuestos conocidos (proteínas diana y fármacos), y se aprovecha después el método para incrementar la precisión de las predicciones de afinidad del método de CV BINDSURF.

Mapoteca Virtual es un sitio Web auspiciado por la Escuela de Ciencias Geográficas de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. Su objetivo principal es apoyar la introducción de las Tecnología de Información Geográfica (TIG) en la docencia, especialmente a nivel universitario. Entre sus principales servicios está el repositorio de mapas digitales producidos por instituciones nacionales que generan información espacial, el cual puede ser accesado por cualquier interesado, dicho material cartográfico puede ser utilizado para la elaboración de tareas, investigaciones o prácticas, a nivel de educación media y universitaria. Adicionalmente es un espacio para profesores y expertos que publiquen documentos y manuales sobre TIG, a la vez que mantiene actualizados a sus usuarios sobre las últimas noticias en dicho campo a nivel nacional.

Teachers' failure to utilise MBL activities more widely may be due to not recognising their capacity to transform the nature of laboratory activities to be more consistent with contemporary constructivist theories of learning. This research aimed to increase understanding of how MBL activities specifically designed to be consistent with a constructivist theory of learning support or constrain student construction of understanding. The first author conducted the research with his Year 11 physics class of 29 students. Dyads completed nine tasks relating to kinematics using a Predict-Observe-Explain format. Data sources included video and audio recordings of students and teacher during four 70-minute sessions, students' display graphs and written notes, semi-structured student interviews, and the teacher's journal. The study identifies the actors and describes the patterns of interactions in the MBL. Analysis of students' discourse and actions identified many instances where students' initial understanding of kinematics were mediated in multiple ways. Students invented numerous techniques for manipulating data in the service of their emerging understanding. The findings are presented as eight assertions. Recommendations are made for developing pedagogical strategies incorporating MBL activities which will likely catalyse student construction of understanding.

An unstructured mesh �nite volume discretisation method for simulating di�usion in anisotropic media in two-dimensional space is discussed. This technique is considered as an extension of the fully implicit hybrid control-volume �nite-element method and it retains the local continuity of the ux at the control volume faces. A least squares function recon- struction technique together with a new ux decomposition strategy is used to obtain an accurate ux approximation at the control volume face, ensuring that the overall accuracy of the spatial discretisation maintains second order. This paper highlights that the new technique coincides with the traditional shape function technique when the correction term is neglected and that it signi�cantly increases the accuracy of the previous linear scheme on coarse meshes when applied to media that exhibit very strong to extreme anisotropy ratios. It is concluded that the method can be used on both regular and irregular meshes, and appears independent of the mesh quality.
