Using square yield criterion and the associated flow rule, complete limit analysis solutions are presented for the collapse load of annular slabs with inner and outer edges either simply supported or clamped. For the simply supported case, a comparison is made with a previously published solution employing Tresca's yield criterion and its associated flow rules. That the collapse load obtained from a complete solution is in fact very close to that obtained from a solution which is only kinematically admissible is demonstrated in the clamped case.

The possible mechanisms of particle aggregation and reduction in liquid limit of the Cochin marine clay on drying are investigated. Mineralogical analysis showed the absence of halloysite in the marine specimen. Experimental results also ruled out the possibility of cementitious material being responsible for particle aggregation and reduction in clay plasticity on drying. The presence of calcium and magnesium as the predominant exchangeable ions and of a high pore salt concentration facilitates strong interparticle attraction and small particle separations; the latter leads to development of significant capillary stresses that permits an intimate contact of particles and growth of strong van der Waals' and Coulombic bonds.

We discuss symmetries and scenarios leading to quasi-degenerate neutrinos in type I seesaw models. The existence of degeneracy in the present approach is not linked to any specific structure for the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix y(D) and holds in general. Basic input is the application of the minimal flavour violation principle to the leptonic sector. Generalizing this principle, we assume that the structure of the right-handed neutrino mass matrix is determined by y(D) and the charged lepton Yukawa coupling matrix y(l) in an effective theory invariant under specific groups G(F) contained in the full symmetry group of the kinetic energy terms. G(F) invariance also leads to specific structure for the departure from degeneracy. The neutrino mass matrix (with degenerate mass m(0)) resulting after seesaw mechanism has a simple form Mv approximate to m(0)(I - py(l)y(l)(T)) in one particular scenario based on supersymmetry. This form is shown tolead to correct description of neutrino masses and mixing angles. The thermal leptogenesis after inclusion of flavour effects can account for the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe within the present scenario. Rates for lepton flavour violating processes can occur at observable levels in the supersymmetric version of the scenario. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The general method earlier developed by the writers for obtaining valid lower bound solutions to slabs under uniformly distributed load and supported along all edges is extended to the slabs with a free edge. Lower bound solutions with normal moment criterion are presented for six cases of orthotropically reinforced slabs, with one of the short edges being free and the other three edges being any combination of fixed and simply supported conditions. The expressions for moment field and collapse load are given for each slab. The lower bounds have been compared with the corresponding upper bound values obtained from the yield line theory with simple straight yield line modes of failure. They are also compared with Nielsen’s solutions available for two cases with isotropic reinforcement.

The ultimate bearing capacity of a number of multiple strip footings, identically spaced and equally loaded to failure at the same time,is computed by using the lower bound limit analysis in combination with finite elements. The efficiency factor due to the component of soil unit weight, is computed with respect to changes in the clear spacing (xi(gamma)) between the footings. It is noted that the failure load for a footing in the group becomes always greater than that of a single isolated footing. The values of xi(gamma) for the smooth footings are found to be always lower than the rough footings. The values ofxi(gamma) are found to increase continuously with a decrease in the spacing between footings. As compared to the available theoretical and experimental results reported in literature, the present analysis provides generally a little lower values of xi(gamma). (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Recent trends in the use of dispersed solid electrolytes and auxiliary electrodes in galvanic cells have increased the need for assessment of materials compatibility. In the design of dispersed solid electrolytes, the potential reactions between the dispersoid and the matrix must be considered. In galvanic cells, possible interactions between the dispersoid and the electrode materials must also be considered in addition to ion exchange between the matrix and the electrode. When auxiliary electrodes, which convert the chemical potential of a component present at the electrode into an equivalent chemical potential of the neutral form of the migrating species in the solid electrolyte are employed, displacement reactions between phases in contact may limit the range of applicability of the cell. Examples of such constraints in the use of oxide dispersoids in fluoride solid electrolytes and NASICON/Na2S couple for measurement of sulphur potential are illustrated with the aid of Ellingham and stability field diagrams.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the changes in water density and hydration characteristics of NaCl solutions confined in slit-shaped graphitic pores. Using a structural signature, we define the hydration limit as the salt concentration at which a sharp drop in the hydration number is observed. At small pores (H = 8.0-10 angstrom), confined water does not possess bulk-like features and remains in a layered arrangement between two surfaces. Despite this high degree of confinement, ions are able to form a quasi-2D hydration shell between two surfaces. Our results indicate the strong propensity of ions to form the first hydration shell, even under extremely confined aqueous environments. The hydration of ions is seen to weakly perturb the oxygen density distributions between two surfaces. The hydration number of Na+ reduces to about 4.15 at a pore width of H = 0.8 nm, when compared with the bulk hydration number of 6.25. At larger pore widths, above H = 16 angstrom, where bulk-like water densities are observed in the central regions of the pore, the hydration number is above 6.

A Pd-6 molecular cage [{(tmen)Pd}(6)(bpy)(3)(tma)2)](NO3)(6) [1; where tmen = N,N,N,N-tetramethylethylene diamine, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridyl,and H(3)tma = trimesic acid] was prepared via the template-free three-component seff-assembly of a cis-blocked palladium(II) acceptorin combination with a tricarboxylate and a dipyridyl donor. Complex 1 represents the first example of a 3D palladium(II) cage of defined shape incorporating anionic and neutral linkers. Guest-induced exclusive formation of this cage was also monitored by an NMR study.

The crystal structures and magnetic properties of five new transition metal-azido complexes with two anionic [pyrazine-2-carboxylate (pyzc) and p-aminobenzoate (paba)] and two neutral [pyrazine (pyz) and pyridine (py)] coligands are reported All five complexes were synthesized bysolvothermal methods The complex [Co-2(pyzc)(2)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (1) is 1D and exhibit canted antiferromagnetism, while the 3D complex [MnNa(pyzc)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (2) has a complicated structure and is weakly ferromagnetic in nature [Mn-2(paba)(2)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) (3). is a 2D sheet and the Mn-II ions are found to be antiferromagnetically coupled The isostructural 2D complexes [Cu-3(pyz)(2)(N-3)(6)](n) (4) and [Cu-3(py)(2)(N-3)(6)](n) (5) resemble remarkably in their magnetic properties exhibiting moderately strong ferromagnetism. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) have been performed to provide a qualitative theoretical interpietation of the overall magnetic behavior shown by these complexes.
