This publication considers data on aquatic anomalies (hydrothermal plumes) in the areas of 26° and 29°N of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Mass of hydrothermal iron supply and intensity of iron sedimentation onto the bottom were estimated by means of sediment traps. It was found that the plume of the TAG hydrothermal vent 6 km**3 in volume contained about 67 tons of particulate Fe; the plume of the Broken Spur field (up to 8.24 km**3 in volume) contained 23.5 tons of particulate Fe or less because of its lower concentration. Data on sediment matter fluxes showed that 0.3-0.5% of hydrothermal iron was precipitated immediately from the neutrally buoyant plume onto the bottom; the bulk of iron was dissipated into environment. From dimensions of the plumes, flow dynamics, iron concentrations in the plumes, and amounts of iron supplied by hydrothermal vents, it was found that resident time of the plumes considered was from 5 to 10 days.

The paper reports data on distribution of dissolved (Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) and particulate (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Co) species of metals in hydrothermal plumes above the active TAG and Broken Spur hydrothermal fields (26° N and 29° N in the MAR rift valley, respectively). Sediment trap data on fluxes of hydrothermal sedimentary material in the areas indicate that (i) the predominant Zn source for metalliferous sediments at the TAG field is material precipitating from the neutrally buoyant plume, and (ii) the predominant source of Fe and Co is re-deposited ore material coming from the area of extensive settling of sulfides.

The age of the subducting Nazca Plate off Chile increases northwards from 0 Ma at the Chile Triple Junction (46°S) to 37 Ma at the latitude of Valparaíso (32°S). Age-related variations in the thermal state of the subducting plate impact on (a) the water influx to the subduction zone, as well as on (b) the volumes of water that are released under the continental forearc or, alternatively, carried beyond the arc. Southern Central Chile is an ideal setting to study this effect, because other factors for the subduction zone water budget appear constant. We determine the water influx by calculating the crustal water uptake and by modeling the upper mantle serpentinization at the outer rise of the Chile Trench. The water release under forearc and arc is determined by coupling FEM thermal models of the subducting plate with stability fields of water-releasing mineral reactions for upper and lower crust and hydrated mantle. Results show that both the influx of water stored in, and the outflux of water released from upper crust, lower crust and mantle vary drastically over segment boundaries. In particular, the oldest and coldest segments carry roughly twice as much water into the subduction zone as the youngest and hottest segments, but their release flux to the forearc is only about one fourth of the latter. This high variability over a subduction zone of < 1500 km length shows that it is insufficient to consider subduction zones as uniform entities in global estimates of subduction zone fluxes. The R/V METEOR cruise M60/3 took place from January 13 through February 14, 2004. Target area was the Logatchev hydrothermal field situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) with main spots around 14°45'N and 44°59'W and 14°55'N and 44°55'W. The active Logatchev hydrothermal field lies on a small plateau on the eastern flank of the inner rift valley in 2900 m to 3060 m water depth. It is characterized by sites of active, high-T fluid emanation and sulfide precipitation as well as by inactive sites. CTD data for 17 stations located in the vicinity of the Logatchev hydrothermal field were recorded using a SEABIRD CTD Type 911, mostly for the entire water column. CTD sensors had been calibrated by SEABIRD directly before the cruise; additional calibrations of the data obtained, e.g. by salinometer measurements of selected samples were not accomplished. For most stations, no indication of hydrothermal plumes could be identified within the CTD-profiles. An exception is station M60/3-37-CTD-R for which the S/T plot evidences the intrusion of a component relatively depleted in salinity for the depth area from 2600m to 2700m water depth.

One of the essential problems of oceanic tectonics is estimation of the influence of plumes of the deep hot mantle on processes in the axial spreading zone. Areas of two giant (St. Helena and Tristan da Cunha) plumes in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) rift zone (South Atlantic) are characterized by the effusion of basalts that differ from typical depleted riftogenic tholeiites by anomalously high contents of lithophile components and specific isotopic compositions. Moreover, the rift valley floor with basalt effusion is significantly uplifted above the adjacent sectors of the rift. The formation of the St. Helena Seamount located 400 km east of the MAR axis is related to magmatism that is active to this day. St. Helena Island is a member of the structural ensemble of large volcanic seamounts (Bonaparte, Bagration, and Kutuzov). Like St. Helena Island, each seamount incorporates a series of smaller rises of different morphologies and dimensions. Thus, a system of subparallel series of NE-trending (~45°) rises extend from the seamount ensemble to the African continent. According to the plate tectonics concept, the seamount series represent hotspots related to a deep mantle plume that can be projected onto the present-day St. Helena Island area (St. Helena plume). At the same time, the inferred topographic map based on satellite altimetry data shows that the seamount series also extend along the opposite southwestern direction (~225°) toward the axial MAR and even intersect the latter structure. This fact cannot be explained by the hotspot hypothesis, which suggests stationary positions of plumes relative to the mobile oceanic plate. In the course of Cruise 10 of the R/V Akademik Ioffe (2002), detailed geological and geophysical investigations were carried out at the junction of one structural series with the MAR rift zone located near the Martin Vaz Fracture Zone (Martin Vaz test area, 19°-20° S). The present communication is devoted to the study of lithology, geochemistry, and isotopy of basalts dredged at the test area.

Ocean acidification (OA) has been found to affect an array of normal physiological processes in mollusks, especially posing a significant threat to the fabrication process of mollusk shell. In the current study, the impact of exposure to elevated pCO2 condition was investigated in mantle tissue of Crassostrea gigas by an integrated metabolomic and proteomic approach. Analysis of metabolome and proteome revealed that elevated pCO2 could affect energy metabolism in oyster C. gigas, marked by differentially altered ATP, succinate, MDH, PEPCK and ALDH levels. Moreover, the up-regulated calponin-2, tropomyosins and myosin light chains indicated that elevated pCO2 probably caused disturbances in cytoskeleton structure in mantle tissue of oyster C. gigas. This work demonstrated that a combination of proteomics and metabolomics could provide important insights into the effects of OA at molecular levels.
