Graphene nanosheet (GNS) was synthesized by using microwave plasma enhanced CVD on copper substrate and followed by evaporation of tin metal. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy show that nanosize Sn particles are well embedded into the GNS matrix. The composition, structure, and electrochemical properties were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chrono-potentiometry. The first discharge capacity of as-deposited and annealed SnGNS obtained was 1551 mA h/g and 975 mA h/g, respectively. The anodes show excellent cyclic performance and coulombic efficiency.

Detailed analysis of alternating current impedance data of LiMn2O4 electrodes measured at several temperatures and potentials was carried out. The Nyquist plots generally consisted of semicircles corresponding to two time constants. However, at low temperatures (-10 to 10 A degrees C) and potential region between 3.90 and 4.20 V, three time constants were present. The third semicircle present at the middle to high frequency range was attributed to electronic resistance of LiMn2O4. Impedance parameters were evaluated using appropriate electrical equivalent circuits. From the temperature dependence of resistive parameters, activation energy values for the corresponding processes were calculated.

The magnetic structure and properties of sodium iron fluorophosphate Na2FePO4F (space group Pbcn), a cathode material for rechargeable batteries, were studied using magnetometry and neutron powder diffraction. The material, which can be described as a quasi-layered structure with zigzag Fe-octahedral chains, develops a long-range antiferromagnetic order below similar to 3.4 K. The magnetic structure is rationalized as a super-exchange-driven ferromagnetic ordering of chains running along the a-axis, coupled antiferromagnetically by super-super-exchange via phosphate groups along the c-axis, with ordering along the b-axis likely due to the contribution of dipole dipole interactions.

The dihexyl substituted poly (3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) (PProDOT-Hx(2)) thin films uniformly deposited by cost effective spray coating technique on transparent conducting oxide coated substrates. The electro-optical properties of PProDOT-Hx(2) films were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy that shows the color contrast about 45% with coloration efficiency of approximate to 185cm(2)/C. The electrochemical properties of PProDOT-Hx(2) films were studied by cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance techniques. The cyclic voltammogram shows that redox reaction of films are diffusion controlled and ions transportation will be faster on the polymer film at higher scan rate. Impedance spectra indicate that polymer films are showing interface charge transfer process as well as capacitive behavior between the electrode and electrolyte. The XRD of the PProDOT-Hx(2) thin films revealed that the films are in amorphous nature, which accelerates the transportation of ions during redox process.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting refractory interstitial compound possessing several unique properties. A cost-effective, efficient and non-Pt electrocatalyst based on TiC is explored and the multi-functionality of TiC towards various electrochemical reactions that are of significant interest in low temperature fuel cells is studied. Ameliorated activities towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and borohydride oxidation are observed with TiC-carbon composites. High sensitivity and selectivity towards ORR have been demonstrated with very good methanol tolerance. The charge transfer interactions between TiC and carbon seem to play a vital role in the improved activity as compared to their individual counterparts. The present study opens up a way to realize completely Pt-free borohydride fuel cell architecture.

Porous alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures have been synthesized by sol-gel route. The effect of preparation temperature on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical stability upon cycling has been studied for supercapacitor application. The discharge capacitance of alpha-Fe2O3 prepared at 300 A degrees C is 193 F g(-1), when the electrodes are cycled in 0.5 M Na2SO3 at a specific current of 1 A g(-1). The capacitance retention after 1,000 cycles is about 92 % of the initial capacitance at a current density of 2 A g(-1). The high discharge capacitance as well as stability of alpha-Fe2O3 electrodes is attributed to large surface area and porosity of the material. There is a decrease in specific capacitance (SC) on increasing the preparation temperature. As iron oxides are inexpensive, the synthetic route adopted for alpha-Fe2O3 in the present study is convenient and the SC is high with good cycling stability, the porous alpha-Fe2O3 is a potential material for supercapacitors.

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based molecular semiconductors have emerged as promising materials for high performance active layers in organic solar cells. It is imperative to comprehend the origin of such a property by investigating the fundamental structure property correlation. In this report we have investigated the role of the donor group in DPP based donor-acceptor- donor (D-A-D) structure to govern the solid state, photophysical and electrochemical properties. We have prepared three derivatives of DPP with varying strengths of the donor groups, such as phenyl (PDPP-Hex), thiophene (TDPP-Hex) and selenophene (SeDPP-Hex). The influence of the donor units on the solid state packing was studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysical, electrochemical and density functional theory ( DFT) results were combined to elucidate the structural and electronic properties of three DPP derivatives. We found that these DPP derivatives crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/c and show herringbone packing in the crystal lattice. The derivatives exhibit weak p-p stacking interactions as two neighboring molecules slip away from each other with varied torsional angles at the donor units. The high torsional angle of 32 degrees ( PDPP-Hex) between the phenyl and lactam ring results in weak intramolecular interactions between the donor and acceptor, while TDPP-Hex and SeDPP-Hex show lower torsional angles of 9 degrees and 12 degrees with a strong overlap between the donor and acceptor units. The photophysical properties reveal that PDPP-Hex exhibits a high Stokes shift of 0.32 eV and SeDPP- Hex shows a high molar absorption co-efficient of 33 600 L mol -1 1 cm -1 1 with a low band gap of similar to 2.2 eV. The electrochemical studies of SeDPP- Hex indicate the pronounced effect of selenium in stabilizing the LUMO energy levels and this further emphasizes the importance of chalcogens in developing new n-type organic semiconductors for optoelectronic devices.

We demonstrate an electrochemical technique for the large scale synthesis of high quality few layer graphene sheets (FLGS) directly from graphite using oxalic acid (a weak acid) as the electrolyte. One of the interesting observations is that the FLGS are stable at least up to 800 degrees C and hence have potential application in solid oxide fuel cells as a gas diffusion layer.

TIN thin films with (200) fibre texture are deposited on Cu substrate at room temperature using reactive magnetron sputtering. They exhibit a discharge capacity of 172 mu Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) (300 mAh g(-1)) in a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a Li salt. There is a graded decrease in discharge capacity when cycled between 0.01 and 3.0 V. Electron microscopy investigations indicate significant changes in surface morphology of the cycled TiN electrodes in comparison with the as deposited TiN films. From XPS depth profile analysis, it is inferred that Li intercalated TIN films consist of lithium compounds, hydroxyl groups, titanium sub oxides and TiN. Lithium diffusivity and reactivity decrease with increase in depth and the major reaction with lithium takes place at film surface and grain boundaries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We incorporated tin oxide nanostructures into the graphene nanosheet matrix and observed that the phase of tin oxide varies with the morphology. The highest discharge capacity and coulumbic efficiency were obtained for SnO phase of nanoplates morphology. Platelet morphology of tin oxide shows more reversible capacity than the nanoparticle (SnO2 phase) tin oxide. The first discharge capacity obtained for SnO@GNS is 1393 and 950 mAh/g for SnO2@GNS electrode at a current density of 23 mu A/cm(2). A stable capacity of about 1022 and 715 mAh/g was achieved at a current rate of 23 mu A/cm(2) after 40 cycles for SnO@GNS and SnO2@GNS anodes, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The use of titania nanotubes (TiO2-NT) as the working electrode provides a substantial improvement in the electrochemical detection of proteins. A biosensor designed using this strategy provided a robust method to detect protein samples at very low concentrations (C-protein ca 1 ng/mu l). Reproducible measurements on protein samples at this concentration (I-p,I-a of 80 +/- 1.2 mu A) could be achieved using a sample volume of ca 30 mu l. We demonstrate the feasibility of this strategy for the accurate detection of penicillin binding protein, PBP2a, a marker for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The selectivity and efficiency of this sensor were also validated using other diverse protein preparations such as a recombinant protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP10D) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). This electrochemical method also presents a substantial improvement in the time taken (few minutes) when compared to conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) protocols. It is envisaged that this sensor could substantially aid in the rapid diagnosis of bacterial infections in resource strapped environments. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) with various alkynes in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions afforded diinserted eight-membered palladacycles, (kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)-PdBr] (1-11), in high yield (76-96%), while insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)Br] (VI-XI), with various alkynes under the aforementioned conditions afforded monoinserted six-membered palladacycles, kappa(2)(C,N)-Pd(Lewis base)Br] (12-21), in high yield (81-91%) except for 14 (23%). The insertion reaction of VI with 2 equiv of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and the insertion reaction of 12 with 1 equiv of DMAD in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions resulted in the formation of a diinserted zwitterionic five-membered palladacycle, kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)Br] (22), in 76% and 70% yields, respectively. Palladacycle 22 upon reaction with AgOTf in wet MeCN afforded the ionic palladacycle kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)(H2O)]OTf] (23) in 78% yield. The ring size of the ``kappa(2)(C,N)Pd]'' unit in the structurally characterized diinserted palladacycles (1 center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2)center dot H2O, 2, 5, and 7), and monoinserted palladacycles (17, 18, and 20 center dot C7H8 H2O) is smaller than that anticipated for mono- and diinserted palladacycles, and this feature is mainly ascribed to the proclivity of III-XI to undergo ring contraction cum amine-imine tautomerization upon alkyne insertion. Palladacycle 22 represents the first diinserted product obtained in alkyne insertion reactions of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)X] type palladarycles. The molecular structure of 22 center dot H2O determined by X-ray diffraction indicates that the positive charge on the guanidinium moiety is balanced by the negative charge on the palladium atom and thus represents the first structurally characterized zwitterionic palladacycle to be reported in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible mechanisms of formation of 12-21 and 22 have been outlined. The presence of more than one species in solution for some of the palladacycles in the series 1-7 and 12-21 was explained by invoking the C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, while this process in conjunction with Pd-N(lutidine) bond rotation was invoked to explain the presence of four isomers of 15, as studied with the aid of variable-concentration H-1 NMR experiments carried out for 14 and 15.

Manipulation of matter at the nanoscale is a way forward to move beyond our current choices in electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies with promise of higher efficiency, environmental benignity, and cost-effectiveness. Electrochemical processes being basically surface phenomena, tailored multifunctional nanoarchitecturing can lead to improvements in terms of electronic and ionic conductivities, diffusion and mass transport, and electron transfer and electrocatalysis. The nanoscale is also a domain in which queer properties surface: those associated with conversion electrodes, ceramic particles enhancing the conductivity of polymer electrolytes, and transition metal oxide powders catalyzing fuel cell reactions, to cite a few. Although this review attempts to present a bird's eye view of the vast literature that has accumulated in this rather infant field, it also lists a few representative studies that establish the beneficial effects of going `nano'. Investigations on nanostructuring and use of nanoparticles and nanoarchitectures related to lithium-ion batteries (active materials and electrolytes), supercapacitors (electrical double-layer capacitors, supercapacitors based on pseudo-capacitance, and hybrid supercapacitors), and fuel cells (electrocatalysts, membranes and hydrogen storage materials) are highlighted. Depalladation of the monoalkyne-inserted cyclopalldated guanidines (kappa 2(C,N)Pd(2,6-Me2C5H3N)Br] (I and II) in PhCl under reflux conditions and that of the dialkyne-inserted cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)PdBr] (III) in pyridine under reflux conditions afforded a guanidine-containing indole (1), imidaziondole (2), and benzazepine (3) in 80%, 67%, and 76%, yields, respectively. trans-L2PdBr2] species (L = 2,6-Me2C5H3N, C5H5N) were also isolated in the aforementioned reactions in 35%, 42%, and 40% yields. Further , the reaction of the cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (IV) with AgBF4 in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic pincer type cyclopalladated guanidine kappa(3)(C,N,O)Pd(MeCN)]BF4] (4) in 85% yield and this palladacycle upon crystallization in MeCN and the reaction of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (V) with AgBf(4) in a CH2Cl2/MeCN mixture afforded the cationic palladacycles {kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(MeCN)(2)]BF4](5 and 6) in 89% and 91% yields, respectively. The separate reactions of 4 with 2 equiv of methyl phenylpropiolate (MPP) or diphenylacetylene (DPA) and the reaction of 5 with 2 equiv of MPP in PhCl at 110 degrees C afforded the guanidine-containing quinazolinium tetrafluoroborate 7 in 25-32% yields. The reaction of 6 with 2 equiv of DPA under otherwise identical conditions afforded the unsymmetrically substituted guanidinium tetrafluoroborate 8, containing a highly substituted naphthalene unit, in 82% yield. Compounds 1-8 were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, and all compounds except 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Molecular structure of 2 and 3 are nove, as the framework in the former arises due to the formation of two C-N bonds upon depalladation while the butadienyl unit in the latter revealed cis,cis stereochemistry, a-feature unprecedented in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible pathways for the formation of heterocycles/carbocycles are proposed. the influence of substitutents on the aryl rings fo the cyclopalladated guanidine moiety and those on alkynes upon the nature of the products in addressed. Heterocycles 1 and 7 revealed the presence of two rotamers in about a 1.00:0.43 ratio in CDCl3 and in about a 1.00:0.14 ratio in CD3OD, respectively, as detected by H-1 NMR spectroscopy while in CD3CN and DMSO-d(6) (1) and CD3CN and CDCl3 (7), these heterocycles revealed the presence of a single rotamer. These spectral features are attributed to the restricted C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, which possibly arises from steric constraint due to the formation of a N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bond with CDCl3 (1) and N-H center dot center dot center dot O and O-D center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds with CD3OD (7).
