Los paisajes protagonistas de esta investigación han sido creados gracias a la actividad de las salinas, explotaciones “donde se beneficia la sal de las aguas del mar o de ciertos manantiales, cuando se ha evaporado el agua.” (RAE). Son lugares de características únicas, tanto por sus valores naturales y medioambientales, como por los valores culturales, patrimoniales, históricos, sociales e identitarios, “resultado de la acción e interacción de factores naturales y humanos en el territorio” (CEP, 2000). Existen salinas en muchos lugares del mundo, pero es en la Península Ibérica donde se encuentra la mayor concentración de estas explotaciones en toda Europa y, por consiguiente, de los singulares paisajes asociados y generados por ellas. Es también la única región europea donde existen salinas de interior que utilizan métodos de evaporación para la obtención de sal: las energías y circunstancias naturales aprovechadas en ellas, sol, viento, gravedad y humedad relativa, propician la evaporación del agua salada, una de las estrategias fundamentales para su funcionamiento. Esta circunstancia determina su posición geográfica en el territorio y su dependencia de los ciclos climáticos estacionales, del régimen hidrológico, la estructura geológica del subsuelo, la geomorfología y la acción humana para potenciar la eficiencia de los procesos productivos, creando para ello un extenso e interesante patrimonio natural y cultural en torno a ellas. Por tanto, son también paisajes culturales, resultado de un proceso artesanal de producción y comercialización de la sal, que se articula a través de la construcción de una serie de instalaciones preindustriales diseminadas y conectadas en puntos estratégicos del territorio costero e interior. La presente tesis aborda la grave situación a la que se enfrentan en la actualidad los paisajes ibéricos de la sal, concretamente los ubicados en la Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía, que están sufriendo un ávido proceso de abandono y desaparición desde mediados del s. XX, con la consiguiente pérdida para la sociedad de este valioso patrimonio cultural y natural, que se ha ido construyendo durante siglos, prácticamente desde el inicio de la humanidad. De las diversas tipologías de salinas que existen, se han seleccionado las explotaciones, tanto marítimas como de interior, que utilizan o han utilizado en su origen técnicas de explotación artesanal basadas en la evaporación. El interés de esta acotación tipológica se ha basado en las relaciones de dependencia que estas explotaciones de sal establecen con el entorno físico y climático donde se ubican para poder existir y funcionar. El objetivo principal de esta investigación ha perseguido el establecimiento y definición de un marco territorial, global e integrador, para los paisajes culturales salineros andaluces, a través de la observación directa realizada durante el trabajo de campo, el análisis de textos, imágenes, documentos, gráficos, palabras y entrevistas abiertas. Lo anterior ha permitido identificar, clasificar, analizar y valorar sus principales características y su evolución en el tiempo, identificando las causas del deterioro y desaparición del patrimonio salinero, evaluando la efectividad de las iniciativas, públicas y/o privadas, y de las figuras de protección, así como analizar las relaciones que establecen con su entorno próximo, con los núcleos de población y habitantes a los que sirven, la red de carreteas y caminos que las conectan y los ríos y mares que las proveen de materia prima. Finalmente, se ha establecido una sistemática integral de análisis, con el fin de poder actuar, a partir del conocimiento, a favor de la gestión, salvaguarda y pervivencia de los excepcionales valores culturales y naturales, que definen el carácter e identidad de estos singulares paisajes. ----------------------ABSTRACT----------------- The landscapes of this research have been created by the activity of saltworks, sites “where salt from sea water or certain springs is obtained, when water evaporates.” (RAE). There are many saltworks in many places around the world, but it is in the Iberian Peninsula where we find the highest concentration of salt industries within Europe and, therefore, the particular landscapes associated and created by them. It is as well the only European region where we can find inland saltworks with evaporation methods to obtain salt: the energies and natural circumstances used in them are sun, wind, gravity and relative humidity, favouring salt water evaporation, one of the main strategies of their functioning. This circumstance determines their geographic position in the territory and its dependence on seasonal climatic cycles, hydrological regimes, geological subsoil structure, geomorphology and human action to strengthen productive processes efficiency, creating an extensive and interesting natural and cultural heritage around them. Therefore, they are also cultural landscapes, result of a traditional salt production process and marketing, organized through the construction of certain preindustrial buildings scattered and connected in strategic inland and seaside spots. This thesis deals with the plight today’s salt landscapes are facing, particularly those within the Andalucian Region, since the middle of the 20th century undergoing an avid process of abandonment and disappearance, meaning a great loss for society of a cultural and natural heritage constructed along centuries, almost since the beginning of mankind. Among the diverse typologies of saltworks, the selection made consists on those inland and seaside ones, which use or have originally used traditional production techniques based on evaporation. The interest in this particular saltwork typology is based on the dependency relationships these industries establish with the environment and climate where they are located, in order to be able to exist and function. The main goal of this research has pursued to establish and define a global and inclusive territorial framework for Andalucian cultural saltworks landscapes, through direct observation carried out during fieldwork, analysis of texts, images, documents, graphs, words and open interviews. All of it has allowed to identify, classify, analyze and evaluate their main characteristics and evolution over time, identifying the causes of deterioration and disappearance of the saltworks heritage, assessing the effectiveness of public and private initiatives, and protection projects, as well as analyzing the relationships with their surroundings, population centers and residents they serve, road networks connecting them and rivers and seas supplying the raw material. Finally, a comprehensive analysis systematic has been established, in order to be able to take action, with knowledge as starting point, for the management, preservation and survival of the unique cultural and natural values that define the character and identity of these singular landscapes.

Se presenta un trabajo de investigación toponímica en La Rioja con enfoque geobotánico. La premisa de partida es que la toponimia relacionada con especies y agrupaciones vegetales, productos forestales y usos del suelo proporciona información valiosa sobre la corología y la dinámica de la vegetación al ser clasificada y analizada con criterios biogeográficos y ecológicos. Se ha elegido la región riojana como zona piloto, al concurrir distintos tipos fisonómicos de vegetación y un conjunto muy diverso de comunidades vegetales representativas del paisaje peninsular. Se añade una larga historia de usos agrícolas en la llanura del Ebro que contrasta con la predominante actividad forestal en las zonas montañosas, en particular la potenciación de los pastos para ganadería trashumante. La Rioja tiene carácter de encrucijada no sólo fitocorológica: es también tierra de fronteras políticas y transiciones lingüísticas. En el léxico y la toponimia conviven variantes puras del castellano, rasgos del romance navarro-aragonés, elementos genuinos de una variante medieval riojana, palabras mozárabes y un numeroso y significativo elenco de topónimos de origen vasco. El trabajo se inicia con unas consideraciones epistemológicas. Se establece un planteamiento de la Toponimia como ciencia interdisciplinar, la etiología de los nombres geográficos, así como su valor apelativo descriptor de los atributos del paisaje. Se enumeran los condicionantes metodológicos de la investigación toponímica y se desarrolla una reflexión sobre las particularidades de la toponimia geobotánica. Se dedica un epígrafe a reseñar estudios precedentes de toponimia botánica y ecológica y el estado actual de conocimientos sobre la toponimia de La Rioja. La delimitación superficial de los parajes designados por los nombres geográficos es clave para un análisis orientado a detectar la correspondencia entre los elementos aludidos por el topónimo y las especies y comunidades vegetales. Las áreas de distribución y presencia, así como las transformaciones del paisaje, quedan definidas en superficies acotadas territorialmente. La metodología seguida se basa en la revisión exhaustiva de fuentes toponímicas ya existentes; destacadamente, los datos procedentes de la cartografía del Castro de Rústica, adscritos a polígonos con dimensión espacial. Las denominaciones de las parcelas catastrales se han complementado con los nombres geográficos del Diccionario de Toponimia Actual de La Rioja (DTALR) (González Blanco, 1987), el nomenclátor NomGeo del IGN, y algunas recopilaciones toponímicas municipales. De la base de datos conjunta se han seleccionado los topónimos con significado geobotánico. Se propone una taxonomía de grupos semánticos basada en categorías de estructura (arbolado, matorral, cubiertas herbáceas y áreas de vegetación escasa o rala) y en la adscripción a tipos de vegetación potencialmente dominantes, ordenados según una escala de higrofilia decreciente). También se reseñan topónimos referentes a usos y aprovechamientos en el medio rural: dehesas, ganadería, productos forestales y algunos cultivos agrícolas. El trabajo reúne en un repertorio sistemático los datos toponímicos, acopiados por comarcas y términos municipales. Se incluye la relación de nombres geográficos encontrados por campos nocionales y se comentan los nombres vernáculos que les han dado origen y su etimología. Quedan señalados los topónimos georreferenciados y asignados a entidades superficiales en la cartografía digital catastral, que se ha superpuesto a mapas forestales a escalas 1:200.000 y 1:50.000, en cuya elaboración participamos. El análisis ha permitido definir “topónimo externo” como el recinto catastral en que la especie o agrupación aludida no tiene presencia en la vegetación actual, al menos como dominante. Los topónimos externos más significativos de cada grupo han sido analizados describiendo la cubierta vegetal actual correspondiente, lo que permite interpretar, junto con las características fisiográficas del paraje, las causas posibles de ausencia del elemento aludido, teniendo en cuenta criterios generales de mesología, de dinámica de la vegetación y de la historia de la acción humana. El trabajo se cierra con un capítulo de conclusiones generales, conceptuales y metodológicas, así como una relación de líneas de profundización de la investigación que quedan apuntadas. Se completa con una relación de fuentes y referencias bibliográficas fundamentales. ABSTRACT This paper presents a study of the toponymy of La Rioja with a specific focus on place names reflecting the region’s geobotany. Its underlying premise is that the toponymy associated with plant species and communities, forest products and land uses can provide valuable information about the chorology and vegetation dynamics when classified and analysed using biogeographical and ecological criteria. La Rioja has been chosen for this pilot study because it concentrates vegetation types of distinct physiognomy and a highly diverse set of plant communities that can be considered representative of the vegetation of the peninsula’s landscapes. This combines with a long history of different agricultural uses on the Ebro plain that contrast with the predominance of forestry activity in the more mountainous areas, in particular the promotion of pasture for livestock transhumance. Indeed, La Rioja is not only a crossroads in terms of its phytochorology, but it is also a land of political boundaries and language transitions. Coexisting in its lexicon and toponymy, we find pure Castilian variants, features from the Romance language of Navarro-Aragonese, genuine elements of the medieval variant of the Riojan dialect, words of Mozarabic and a large and significant list of place names of Basque origin. The paper begins by outlining a number of epistemological considerations and establishes an interdisciplinary approach to toponymy, the aetiology of geographical names, and their value in the descriptive naming of the features of a landscape. It continues by enumerating the methodological determinants of toponymic research and reflects on the specific characteristics of geobotanical toponyms. The next section is dedicated to examining previous studies of botanical and ecological place names and providing a state-of-the-art review of the toponymy of La Rioja. Delimiting the sites designated by the geographical names is essential to any analysis designed to detect the correspondence between the elements alluded to by the toponyms and plant species and communities. These areas of distribution and presence, as well as the landscape changes, are defined in terms of spatially delimited surface areas. The methodology adopted involves an exhaustive review of existing toponymic sources; in particular, data obtained from the maps of the Rustic Cadastre, assigned to spatial polygons. The names of these cadastral parcels are complemented by the geographical names taken from the Diccionario de Toponimia Actual de La Rioja (DTALR) (González Blanco, 1987); the gazetteer – NomGeo, published by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional; and, various municipal list of toponyms. Place names with a geobotanical meaning were then selected from this joint database. The paper proposes a taxonomy of semantic groups based on structural categories (namely wooded areas, brushland, grassy areas and areas of scanty or sparse vegetation) and assignment to the potentially dominant type of vegetation (ordered on a scale of decreasing hygrophilic trends). Place names referring to land uses and practices in rural areas – including, pasture, livestock, forest products and some agricultural crops – are also described. The study produces a systematic list of toponyms ordered by counties and municipalities. The geographical names are organised by notional fields and the vernacular names that have given rise to them and their etymology are discussed. The toponyms are georeferenced and assigned to surface elements on the digital cadastral map, superimposed on forest maps at scales of 1:200,000 and 1:50,000, in the production of which the authors participated. The analysis has allowed us to define “external toponyms” as those cadastral parcels in which the plant species or group alluded to is no longer present in the vegetation, at least as the dominant type. The most significant external toponyms in each group have been analysed by describing the corresponding, present-day vegetation cover, which allows us to interpret, along with the physiographic features of the site, the possible causes of the absence of the aforementioned element, bearing in mind general criteria of mesology, vegetation dynamics and the history of human action. The paper finishes by offering a number of general conceptual and methodological conclusions, and a list of areas that future research can usefully examine. The study is supplemented with a list of sources and key references.

El análisis multitemporal permite detectar cambios entre diferentes fechas de referencia, deduciendo la evolución del medio natural o las repercusiones de la acción humana sobre el medio. El propósito del estudio fue evaluar el cambio de uso del suelo en el Paisaje Terrestre Miraflor Moropotente en el período 1993-2011, a través de imágenes satelitales, a fin de determinar el estado de fragmentación del paisaje. Los cambios de usos de suelo fueron derivados de la clasificación de tres imágenes Landsat TM, con una resolución espacial de 30 metros tomadas en febrero de 1993, abril de 2000 y enero 2011. Se realizó una verificación en campo para la identificación de coberturas de suelo y la corroboración en las imágenes satelitales. La fragmentación se realizó con el cálculo de métricas e índices de fragmentación a nivel del paisaje. Los principales resultados muestran que los cambios de uso de suelo están determinados por la degradación antrópica, principalmente en la conversión de la vegetación nativa a espacios agrícolas y la expansión de la ganadería. El crecimiento demográfico y los monocultivos van ejerciendo presión sobre el bosque, transformando zonas de vocación forestal a cultivos agrícolas. Los cambios de cobertura han significado un paisaje fragmentado con diferentes grados de perturbación, que conllevan a una disminución de la superficie de hábitats naturales, reducción del tamaño de los fragmentos y aislamientos de los mismos.

This special issue of the Journal of the Operational Research Society is dedicated to papers on the related subjects of knowledge management and intellectual capital. These subjects continue to generate considerable interest amongst both practitioners and academics. This issue demonstrates that operational researchers have many contributions to offer to the area, especially by bringing multi-disciplinary, integrated and holistic perspectives. The papers included are both theoretical as well as practical, and include a number of case studies showing how knowledge management has been implemented in practice that may assist other organisations in their search for a better means of managing what is now recognised as a core organisational activity. It has been accepted by a growing number of organisations that the precise handling of information and knowledge is a significant factor in facilitating their success but that there is a challenge in how to implement a strategy and processes for this handling. It is here, in the particular area of knowledge process handling that we can see the contributions of operational researchers most clearly as is illustrated in the papers included in this journal edition. The issue comprises nine papers, contributed by authors based in eight different countries on five continents. Lind and Seigerroth describe an approach that they call team-based reconstruction, intended to help articulate knowledge in a particular organisational. context. They illustrate the use of this approach with three case studies, two in manufacturing and one in public sector health care. Different ways of carrying out reconstruction are analysed, and the benefits of team-based reconstruction are established. Edwards and Kidd, and Connell, Powell and Klein both concentrate on knowledge transfer. Edwards and Kidd discuss the issues involved in transferring knowledge across frontières (borders) of various kinds, from those borders within organisations to those between countries. They present two examples, one in distribution and the other in manufacturing. They conclude that trust and culture both play an important part in facilitating such transfers, that IT should be kept in a supporting role in knowledge management projects, and that a staged approach to this IT support may be the most effective. Connell, Powell and Klein consider the oft-quoted distinction between explicit and tacit knowledge, and argue that such a distinction is sometimes unhelpful. They suggest that knowledge should rather be regarded as a holistic systemic property. The consequences of this for knowledge transfer are examined, with a particular emphasis on what this might mean for the practice of OR Their view of OR in the context of knowledge management very much echoes Lind and Seigerroth's focus on knowledge for human action. This is an interesting convergence of views given that, broadly speaking, one set of authors comes from within the OR community, and the other from outside it. Hafeez and Abdelmeguid present the nearest to a 'hard' OR contribution of the papers in this special issue. In their paper they construct and use system dynamics models to investigate alternative ways in which an organisation might close a knowledge gap or skills gap. The methods they use have the potential to be generalised to any other quantifiable aspects of intellectual capital. The contribution by Revilla, Sarkis and Modrego is also at the 'hard' end of the spectrum. They evaluate the performance of public–private research collaborations in Spain, using an approach based on data envelopment analysis. They found that larger organisations tended to perform relatively better than smaller ones, even though the approach used takes into account scale effects. Perhaps more interesting was that many factors that might have been thought relevant, such as the organisation's existing knowledge base or how widely applicable the results of the project would be, had no significant effect on the performance. It may be that how well the partnership between the collaborators works (not a factor it was possible to take into account in this study) is more important than most other factors. Mak and Ramaprasad introduce the concept of a knowledge supply network. This builds on existing ideas of supply chain management, but also integrates the design chain and the marketing chain, to address all the intellectual property connected with the network as a whole. The authors regard the knowledge supply network as the natural focus for considering knowledge management issues. They propose seven criteria for evaluating knowledge supply network architecture, and illustrate their argument with an example from the electronics industry—integrated circuit design and fabrication. In the paper by Hasan and Crawford, their interest lies in the holistic approach to knowledge management. They demonstrate their argument—that there is no simple IT solution for organisational knowledge management efforts—through two case study investigations. These case studies, in Australian universities, are investigated through cultural historical activity theory, which focuses the study on the activities that are carried out by people in support of their interpretations of their role, the opportunities available and the organisation's purpose. Human activities, it is argued, are mediated by the available tools, including IT and IS and in this particular context, KMS. It is this argument that places the available technology into the knowledge activity process and permits the future design of KMS to be improved through the lessons learnt by studying these knowledge activity systems in practice. Wijnhoven concentrates on knowledge management at the operational level of the organisation. He is concerned with studying the transformation of certain inputs to outputs—the operations function—and the consequent realisation of organisational goals via the management of these operations. He argues that the inputs and outputs of this process in the context of knowledge management are different types of knowledge and names the operation method the knowledge logistics. The method of transformation he calls learning. This theoretical paper discusses the operational management of four types of knowledge objects—explicit understanding; information; skills; and norms and values; and shows how through the proposed framework learning can transfer these objects to clients in a logistical process without a major transformation in content. Millie Kwan continues this theme with a paper about process-oriented knowledge management. In her case study she discusses an implementation of knowledge management where the knowledge is centred around an organisational process and the mission, rationale and objectives of the process define the scope of the project. In her case they are concerned with the effective use of real estate (property and buildings) within a Fortune 100 company. Studies using transcranial magnetic stimulation have demonstrated that action observation can modulate the activity of the corticospinal system. This has been attributed to the activity of an 'action observation network', whereby premotor cortex activity influences corticospinal excitability. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that the context in which participants observe actions (i.e. whether they simply attend to an action, or observe it with the intention to imitate) modulates action observation network activity. The study presented here examined whether the context in which actions were observed revealed similar modulatory effects on corticospinal excitability. Eight human participants observed a baseline stimulus (a fixation cross), observed actions in order to attend to them, or observed the same actions with the intention to imitate them. Whereas motor evoked potentials elicited from the first dorsal interosseus muscle of the hand were facilitated by attending to actions, observing the same actions in an imitative capacity led to no facilitation effect. Furthermore, no motor facilitation effects occurred in a control muscle. Electromyographic data collected when participants physically imitated the observed actions revealed that the activity of the first dorsal interosseus muscle increased significantly during action execution compared with rest. These data suggest that an inhibitory mechanism acts on the corticospinal system to prevent the immediate overt imitation of observed actions. These data provide novel insight into the properties of the human action observation network, demonstrating for the first time that observing actions with the intention to imitate them can modulate the effects of action observation on corticospinal excitability.

Hayek’s theory of socio-cultural evolution is a generalization of his theory on spontaneous market order. Hayek explains both the emergence of market and social institutions serving as a social basis for that order within the framework of a unified evolutionary logic. This logic interprets the emergence and survival of spontaneous order and group-level rules of conduct as an unintended consequence of human action. In order to explain the emergence of social norms exclusively on the basis of methodological individualism, one would have to give up an exclusively evolutionary explanation of these norms. Since Hayek applies the invisible-hand explanation to the investigation of social norms, he combines the position of methodological individualism with functionalist-evolutionary arguments in his analysis. Hayek’s theory of socio-cultural evolution represents a theory in the framework of which methodological individualism and functionalism do not crowd out but complement each other.

The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate Tom Stoppard’s application of chaos theory and quantum science in ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, HAPGOOD and ARCADIA; and determine the extent to which Stoppard argues for the importance of human action and choice. ^ Through critical analysis this study examined how Stoppard applies the quantum aspects of: (1) indeterminacy to human epistemology in ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD; (2) complementarity to human identity in HAPGOOD; and (3) recursive symmetry to human history in ARCADIA. It also examined how Stoppard excavates the complexities of human action, choice and identity through the lens of chaos theory and quantum science. ^ These findings demonstrated that Tom Stoppard is not merely juxtaposing quantum science and human interactions for the sake of drama; rather, by excavating the complexities of human action, choice and identity through the lens of chaos theory and quantum science, Stoppard demonstrates the fundamental connection between individuals and the post-Newtonian universe.^

This dissertation develops an image processing framework with unique feature extraction and similarity measurements for human face recognition in the thermal mid-wave infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The goals of this research is to design specialized algorithms that would extract facial vasculature information, create a thermal facial signature and identify the individual. The objective is to use such findings in support of a biometrics system for human identification with a high degree of accuracy and a high degree of reliability. This last assertion is due to the minimal to no risk for potential alteration of the intrinsic physiological characteristics seen through thermal infrared imaging. The proposed thermal facial signature recognition is fully integrated and consolidates the main and critical steps of feature extraction, registration, matching through similarity measures, and validation through testing our algorithm on a database, referred to as C-X1, provided by the Computer Vision Research Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. Feature extraction was accomplished by first registering the infrared images to a reference image using the functional MRI of the Brain’s (FMRIB’s) Linear Image Registration Tool (FLIRT) modified to suit thermal infrared images. This was followed by segmentation of the facial region using an advanced localized contouring algorithm applied on anisotropically diffused thermal images. Thermal feature extraction from facial images was attained by performing morphological operations such as opening and top-hat segmentation to yield thermal signatures for each subject. Four thermal images taken over a period of six months were used to generate thermal signatures and a thermal template for each subject, the thermal template contains only the most prevalent and consistent features. Finally a similarity measure technique was used to match signatures to templates and the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to validate the results of the matching process. Thirteen subjects were used for testing the developed technique on an in-house thermal imaging system. The matching using an Euclidean-based similarity measure showed 88% accuracy in the case of skeletonized signatures and templates, we obtained 90% accuracy for anisotropically diffused signatures and templates. We also employed the Manhattan-based similarity measure and obtained an accuracy of 90.39% for skeletonized and diffused templates and signatures. It was found that an average 18.9% improvement in the similarity measure was obtained when using diffused templates. The Euclidean- and Manhattan-based similarity measure was also applied to skeletonized signatures and templates of 25 subjects in the C-X1 database. The highly accurate results obtained in the matching process along with the generalized design process clearly demonstrate the ability of the thermal infrared system to be used on other thermal imaging based systems and related databases. A novel user-initialization registration of thermal facial images has been successfully implemented. Furthermore, the novel approach at developing a thermal signature template using four images taken at various times ensured that unforeseen changes in the vasculature did not affect the biometric matching process as it relied on consistent thermal features.

The influence of hydrological dynamics on vegetation distribution and the structuring of wetland environments is of growing interest as wetlands are modified by human action and the increasing threat from climate change. Hydrological properties have long been considered a driving force in structuring wetland communities. We link hydrological dynamics with vegetation distribution across Everglades National Park (ENP) using two publicly available datasets to study the probability structure of the frequency, duration, and depth of inundation events along with their relationship to vegetation distribution. This study is among the first to show hydrologic structuring of vegetation communities at wide spatial and temporal scales, as results indicate that the percentage of time a location is inundated and its mean depth are the principal structuring variables to which individual communities respond. For example, sawgrass, the most abundant vegetation type within the ENP, is found across a wide range of time inundated percentages and mean depths. Meanwhile, other communities like pine savanna or red mangrove scrub are more restricted in their distribution and found disproportionately at particular depths and inundations. These results, along with the probabilistic structure of hydropatterns, potentially allow for the evaluation of climate change impacts on wetland vegetation community structure and distribution.

The seismic activity in the Northeastern of Brazil has been a constant target of study, since it is the most active region of the country. However, some areas have their earthquakes related to human action, what means they are induced. The Açu dam is a classic example of reservoir-induced seismicity and it has been the subject of several studies. Recently, after a considerable period of inactivity, the LabSis / UFRN recorded events related to the dam, which led to the installation of a network around the reservoir. From the data provided by this network, it was observed that the seismic activity is related to a new epicental area inside the lake. The epicentral parameters and the focal mechanism were determined. It was found that the events were related to the reactivation of a basement structure in a new seismogenic subvertical fault with NE-SW-striking subparallel to the São Rafael Fault. These results were used in the preparation of a scientific paper, which discussed the relationship between this seismicity with the geology of the region and with the reservoir water level. The paper showed that the diffusion of pore pressure was the main mechanism that controlled the triggering of the induced seismicity at the reservoir.

David Hume belonged to the consecuencialist philosophical tendency, in which is included utilitarianism. This tendency was opposed to the normativism philosophy, in which is enrolled contractualism. This article analyzes the critique made by David Hume, from the utilitarianism perspective, against contractualism. The major philosophers of contractualism are Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau. Hume implemented three arguments in opposition to them: 1) historic: the social contract does not have any practical testing. Therefore it could not be presented as the foundation of the state; 2) philosophical: it is not the duty, but the interest that moves men to seek the formation of the political authority; 3) social: in the consciousness of the people, there is no trace of the social contract.Utilitarianism was one of the philosophical tendencies that finished the theoretical hegemony that contractualism had during the XVII and the XVIII centuries. Nonetheless from the historical and social point of view, the liberalization movements in many parts of the world, at that time, were inspired by contractualism. It means that from the theoretical point of view, utilitarianism, certainly, stressed the empirical origins of the state but not the rational justification of the political Authority. Hume was unable to understand the normative force that contractualism owns, which inspires human action.

El objetivo de este trabajo es explicar la conexión entre reglas discursivas y normas morales en el marco de la ética del discurso. El trabajo comienza con un análisis de la diferencia entre acción y operación y con una reconstrucción del concepto de discurso. Luego es presentada la diferencia y la relación entre ley y obligación. La conclusión es que la conexión entre acción y discurso posible está implícita en la noción de responsabilidad moral.
