A comparative morphological study of different ZnO nanostructures was carried out with different varying process parameters for energy harvesting. Molarity, temperature, growth duration and seed layer were such fundamental controlling parameters. The study brings out an outstanding piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 44.33 pm/V for vertically aligned ZnO nanorod structures, considered as the highest reported d(33) value for any kind of ZnO nanostructures. XRD analysis confirms wurtzite nature of this nanorod structure with 0001] as preferential growth direction. Semiconducting characteristic of nanorods was determined with temperature induced I/V characterization.

Silver Indium Di-sulfide (AgInS2) thin films are deposited using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique and the effect of substrate temperature (T-s) on film growth is studied by varying the temperature from 250 to 400 degrees C. From the structural analysis, orthorhombic AgInS2 phase is identified with preferential orientation along (002) plane. Further analysis with Raman revealed the coexistence of Cu-Au ordered and chalcopyrite structures in the films. Stoichiometric films are obtained at T-s of 300 degrees C. Above 300 degrees C, the film conductivity changed from p to n-type and the grain size decreased. The band gap of AgInS2 films varied from 1.55 to 1.89 eV and absorption coefficient is found to be >10(4) cm(-1). The films have sheet resistance in the range of 0.05 to 1300 Omega/square Both p and n type films are prepared through this technique without any external doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. The dispersion state of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in melt mixed polyethylene/polyethylene oxide (PE/PEO) blends has been assessed by both surface and volume electrical conductivity measurements and the structural relaxations have been assessed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The selective localization of MWNTs in the blends was controlled by the flow characteristics of the components, which led to their localization in the energetically less favored phase (PE). The electrical conductivity and positive temperature co-efficient (PTC) measurements were carried out on hot pressed samples. The neat blends exhibited only a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect while the blends with MWNTs exhibited both a PTC and a NTC at the melting temperatures of PE and PEO respectively. These phenomenal changes were corroborated with the different crystalline morphology in the blends. It was deduced that during compression molding, the more viscous PEO phase spreads less in contrast to the less viscous PE phase. This has further resulted in a gradient in morphology as well as the distribution state of the MWNTs in the samples and was supported by scanning electron and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) studies and contact angle measurements. SAM from different depths of the samples revealed a gradient in the microstructure in the PE/PEO blends which is contingent upon the flow characteristics of the components. Interestingly, the surface and volume electrical conductivity was different due to the different dispersion state of the MWNTs at the surface and bulk. The observed surface and volume electrical conductivity measurements were corroborated with the evolved morphology during processing. The structural relaxations in both PE and PEO were discerned from broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The segmental dynamics below and above the melting temperature of PEO were significantly different in the presence of MWNTs.

The electronic structures of Nd1-xYxMnO3 (x=0-0.5) were studied using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) at the Mn L-3,L-2- and O K-edge along with valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES). The systematic increase in white-line intensity of the Mn L-3,L-2-edge with doping, suggests a decrease in the occupancy of Mn 3d orbitals. The O K-edge XANES shows a depletion of unoccupied states above the Fermi energy. The changes in the O K-edge spectra due to doping reflects an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The VB-PES shows broadening of the features associated with Mn 3d and O 2p hybridized states and the shift of these features to a slightly higher binding energy in agreement with our GGA + U calculations. The system shows a net shift of the occupied and unoccupied states away from the Fermi energy with doping. The shift in theoretical site-projected density of states of x=0.5 composition with respect to x=0 suggest a subtle change from a charge transfer to Mott-Hubbard type insulator. Thin films of CexZn1-xO thin films were deposited on glass substrates at 400 degrees C by nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. Ce doping concentration (x) was varied from 0 to 10%, in steps of 2.5%. X-ray diffraction reveals that all the films have polycrystalline nature with hexagonal crystal structure and high preferential orientation along (002) plane. Optical parameters such as; transmittance, band gap energy, refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), complex dielectric constants (epsilon(r), epsilon(i)) and optical conductivity (sigma(r), sigma(i)) have been determined and discussed with respect to Ce concentration. All the films exhibit transmittance above 80% in the wavelength range from 330 to 2500 nm. Optical transmission measurements indicate the decrease of direct band gap energy from 3.26 to 3.12 eV with the increase of Ce concentration. Photoluminescence spectra show strong near band edge emission centered similar to 398 nm and green emission centered similar to 528 nm with excitation wavelength similar to 350 nm. High resolution scanning electron micrographs indicate the formation of vertical nano-rod like structures on the film surface with average diameter similar to 41 nm. Electrical properties of the Ce doped ZnO film have been studied using ac impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 100 Hz-1 MHz at different temperatures. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Monophasic Ba2NaNb5O15 was crystallized at nanometer scale (12-36 nm) in 2BaO-0.5Na(2)O-2.5Nb(2)O(5)- 4.5B(2)O(3) glass system. To begin with, optically transparent glasses, in this system, were fabricated via the conventional melt. quenching technique. The amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were respectively confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analyses. Nearly homogeneous distribution of Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN) nanocrystals associated with tungsten bronze structure akin to their bulk parent structure was accomplished by subjecting the as-fabricated glasses to appropriate heat-treatment temperatures. Indeed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) carried out on these samples corroborated the presence of Ba2NaNb5O15 nanocrystals dispersed in a continuous glass matrix. The as-quenched glasses were similar to 75% transparent in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The optical band gap and refractive index were found to have crystallite size (at nanoscale) dependence. The optical band gap increased with the decrease in crystallite size. The refractive indices of the glass nanocrystal composites as determined by Brewster angle method were rationalized using different empirical models. The refractive index dispersion with wavelength of light was analyzed on the basis of the Sellmeier relations. At room temperature under UV excitation (355 nm) these glass nanocrystal composites displayed violet-blue emission which was ascribed to the defects states.

The present experimental study investigates the influence of post-deposition annealing on the transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value of ZnO thin films deposited on a flexible metal alloy substrate, and its relationship with the vibration sensing performance. Highly c-axis oriented and crystalline ZnO thin films were deposited on flexible Phynox alloy substrate via radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering. ZnO thin film samples were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 100 degrees C to 500 degrees C, resulting in the temperature of 300 degrees C determined as the optimum annealing temperature. The crystallinity, morphology, microstructure, and rms surface roughness of annealed ZnO thin films were systematically investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. The piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value was measured by 4-point bending method. ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C was highly c-axis oriented, crystalline, possesses fine surface morphology with uniformity in the grain size. This film showed higher d(31) coefficient value of 7.2 pm V-1. A suitable in-house designed and developed experimental set-up, for evaluating the vibration sensing performance of annealed ZnO thin films is discussed. As expected the ZnO thin film annealed at 300 degrees C showed relatively better result for vibration sensing studies. It generates comparatively higher peak output voltage of 147 mV, due to improved structural and morphological properties, and higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. We demonstrate in a simple model the surprising result that turning on an on-site Coulomb interaction U in a doped band insulator leads to the formation of a half-metallic state. In the undoped system, we show that increasing U leads to a first order transition at a finite value U-AF between a paramagnetic band insulator and an antiferomagnetic Mott insulator. Upon doping, the system exhibits half-metallic ferrimagnetism over a wide range of doping and interaction strengths on either side of U-AF. Our results, based on dynamical mean field theory, suggest a new route to half metallicity, and will hopefully motivate searches for new materials for spintronics.

Chalcogenide glasses are interesting materials for their infrared transmitting properties and photo-induced effects. This paper reports the influence of light on the optical properties of Sb10S40Se50 thin films. The amorphous nature and chemical composition of the deposited film was studied by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The optical constants, i.e., refractive index, extinction coefficient, and optical band gap as well as film thickness are determined from the measured transmission spectra using the Swanepoel method. The dispersion of the refractive index is discussed in terms of the single-oscillator Wemple-DiDomenico model. The dispersion energy parameter was found to be less for the laser-irradiated film, which indicates the laser-irradiated film is more microstructurally disordered as compared to the as-prepared film. It is observed that laser-irradiation of the films leads to decrease in optical band gap (photo-darkening) while increase in refractive index. The decrease in the optical band gap is explained on the basis of change in nature of films due to chemical disorderness and the increase in refractive index may be due to the densification of films with improved grain structure because of microstructural disorderness in the films. The optical changes are supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. (C) 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional monophosphate tungsten bronze, P4W12O44, has been investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theoretical calculations. Experimental electron-like bands around Gamma point and Fermi surfaces have similar shapes as predicted by calculations. Fermi surface mapping at different temperatures shows a depletion of density of states at low temperature in certain flat portions of the Fermi surfaces. These flat portions of the Fermi surfaces satisfy the partial nesting condition with incommensurate nesting vectors q(1) and q(2), which leads to the formation of charge density waves in this phosphate tungsten bronzes. The setting up of charge density wave in these bronzes can well explain the anomaly observed in its transport properties. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

We report the performance and photophysics of a low band-gap diketopyrrolopyrrole-based copolymer used in bulk heterojunction devices in combination with PC71BM. We show that the short lifetime of photogenerated excitons in the polymer constitutes an obstacle towards device efficiency by limiting the diffusion range of the exciton to the donor-acceptor heterojunction. We employ ultrafast transient-probe and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques to examine the excited state loss channels inside the devices. We use the high boiling point solvent additive 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) to study the photoexcited state losses in different blend morphologies. The solvent additive acts as a compatibiliser between the donor and the acceptor material and leads to smaller domain sizes, higher charge formation yields and increased device efficiency.

We propose a model to realize a fermionic superfluid state in an optical lattice circumventing the cooling problem. Our proposal exploits the idea of tuning the interaction in a characteristically low-entropy state, a band insulator in an optical bilayer system, to obtain a superfluid. By performing a detailed analysis of the model including fluctuations and augmented by a variational quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the ground state, we show that the superfluid state obtained has a high transition temperature of the order of the hopping energy. Our system is designed to suppress other competing orders such as a charge density wave. We suggest a laboratory realization of this model via an orthogonally shaken optical lattice bilayer.

Synergizing graphene on silicon based nanostructures is pivotal in advancing nano-electronic device technology. A combination of molecular dynamics and density functional theory has been used to predict the electronic energy band structure and photo-emission spectrum for graphene-Si system with silicon as a substrate for graphene. The equilibrium geometry of the system after energy minimization is obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. For the stable geometry obtained, density functional theory calculations are employed to determine the energy band structure and dielectric constant of the system. Further the work function of the system which is a direct consequence of photoemission spectrum is calculated from the energy band structure using random phase approximations.

We report on the systematic comparative study of highly c-axis oriented and crystalline piezoelectric ZnO thin films deposited on four different flexible substrates for vibration sensing application. The flexible substrates employed for present experimental study were namely a metal alloy (Phynox), metal (aluminum), polyimide (Kapton), and polyester (Mylar). ZnO thin films were deposited by an RF reactive magnetron sputtering technique. ZnO thin films of similar thicknesses of 700 +/- 30 nm were deposited on four different flexible substrates to have proper comparative studies. The crystallinity, surface morphology, chemical composition, and roughness of ZnO thin films were evaluated by respective material characterization techniques. The transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d(31)) value for assessing the piezoelectric property of ZnO thin films on different flexible substrates was measured by a four-point bending method. ZnO thin films deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed relatively better material characterization results and a higher piezoelectric d(31) coefficient value as compared to ZnO films on metal and polymer substrates. In order to experimentally verify the above observations, vibration sensing studies were performed. As expected, the ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy substrate showed better vibration sensing performance. It has generated the highest peak to peak output voltage amplitude of 256 mV as compared to that of aluminum (224 mV), Kapton (144 mV), and Mylar (46 mV). Therefore, metal alloy flexible substrate proves to be a more suitable, advantageous, and versatile choice for integrating ZnO thin films as compared to metal and polymer flexible substrates for vibration sensing applications. The present experimental study is extremely important and helpful for the selection of a suitable flexible substrate for various applications in the field of sensor and actuator technology.

Alumina thin films were deposited on titanium (Ti) and fused quartz by both direct and reactive pulsed rf magnetron sputtering techniques. X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were utilized to study the phases and surface morphology of the films. The as-deposited alumina thin films were amorphous. However, after annealing at 500 degrees C in vacuum, the crystalline peaks corresponding to the Theta (0), Delta (8) and Chi ()) alumina phases were obtained. The optical transmittance and reflectance as well as IR emittanc,e data were also evaluated for the thin films. The transmittance, e.g., (similar to 90%) of the bare quartz substrate was not changed even when the alumina thin films were deposited for an hour. However, further increase in deposition time (e.g., 7 h) of the alumina thin films showed only a marginal decrease (e.g., similar to 5%) in average transmittance of the bare quartz substrate. The direct and indirect optical band gaps and extinction coefficient of the alumina films were estimated from the transmittance spectra. The IR emittance of the Ti substrate (e.g., similar to 16%) was almost constant after depositing alumina thin films for an hour. Further increase in deposition time showed only a marginal increase (e.g., similar to 9%) in IR emittance value. Therefore, it is proposed that the alumina films developed in the present work can act as a protective cover for the Ti substrate while retaining the thermo-optical properties of the same. The nanohardness and Young's modulus of the alumina thin films were evaluated by the novel nanoindentation technique. The nanohardness was measured as similar to 6 GPa. Further, Young's modulus was evaluated as similar to 116 GPa. The magnitudes of the nanomechanical properties of the thin films were a little smaller than those reported in the literature. This was linked to the lack of crystalline phases in the as-deposited alumina thin films. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.
