The authors conducted a cross-sectional short-term study using Lind's Moral Judgment Test (MJT) to compare moral judgment competence (C-score) among students from a medical school in the Northeast region of Brazil and a medical school in the Northern region of Portugal. This study compares the C-scores of groups in the first and eighth semesters of study within each medical school and groups from corresponding semesters between the two medical schools. This study also evaluates the influence of such factors as age and gender on moral competence. A regression of moral judgment competence among the students in their eighth semester versus the students in the first semester of Brazilian medical school (p < 0.001) and a stagnation of moral competence among students in their eighth semester versus the first semester students in the Portuguese medical school (p = 0.06) were observed. For both the first semester and eighth semester groups, the students in the Portuguese medical school had higher C-scores than the students in the Brazilian medical school. In the analysis of the students' performances in terms of MJT dilemmas, the phenomenon of moral segmentation was observed in all of the groups, and the students performed better on the worker's dilemma than on the doctor's dilemma. Among students in the same semester of study, older students had lower C-scores. There was generally no significant difference between men's and women's C-scores. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

In this study we intent to contextualize the topic environmental vulnerability on the world stage, highlighting similarities and differences in their conceptions in Portugal and Brazil. In the literature about the vulnerability is already established the contribution of Geotechnologies, especially the Systems of Remote Sensing and Orbital Imaging as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its potential for modelling physical and socioeconomic aspects for the prevention, mitigation and facing risk manifestations, whether natural, technological or mixed. This paper aims to discuss the methodological framework of vulnerability studies and the results of application in the modelling of socioeconomic and environmental data in the context of the Region Centre of Portugal and the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The methodology for analysing the vulnerability of these regions was based on quantitative studies of the capacity of resistance and resilience of populations and territories. The results were consistent with the socio-environmental realities of the study areas and reflect the complexity of facing and recovery of risk situations in case of territories and populations under low economic conditions and urban infrastructure, whether in Brazil and Portugal.

Using theoretical arguments, a simple scaling law for the size of the intrinsic rotation observed in tokamaks in the absence of a momentum injection is found: The velocity generated in the core of a tokamak must be proportional to the ion temperature difference in the core divided by the plasma current, independent of the size of the device. The constant of proportionality is of the order of 10 km . s(-1) . MA . keV(-1). When the intrinsic rotation profile is hollow, i.e., it is countercurrent in the core of the tokamak and cocurrent in the edge, the scaling law presented in this Letter fits the data remarkably well for several tokamaks of vastly different size and heated by different mechanisms.

Different lead sources were identified in a large uranium tailings deposit (5Mton) in the Central Region of Portugal using lead isotopic ratios obtained by ICP-QMS. These ratios helped to clarify the different sources of Pb within the tailings deposit and the impact of the tailings on the surroundings. Ten depth profiles were used for isotopic characterization of the tailings deposit; the lead background signature was evaluated in seven regional rocks (granites) and was defined as being 28 +/- 1 mg kg(-1) for Pb bulk concentration and with isotopic ratios of 1.264(2) for Pb-206/Pb-207 and 1.962(7) for Pb-208/Pb-206. In order to understand Pb isotope distribution within the tailings deposit, simple mixing/mass balance models were used to fit experimental data, involving: (1) the background component; (2) uranium ores (pitchblende) characterized by the ratios Pb-206/Pb-207 of 1.914(3) and Pb-208/Pb-206 of 1.235(2); and (3) an unknown Pb source (named 'Fonte 5') characterized by the ratios Pb-206/Pb-207 of 3.079(7) and Pb-208/Pb-206 of 0.715(1). This unknown source showed high radiogenic ratios found in the water of some tailings depth profiles located in a very specific position in the dump. In terms of isotopic characterization, 69% of the deposit material resulted from the background source, 25% from uranium minerals and only 6% from other uranium mines in the region. Finally, the environment impact revealed that the pollution was focused only in the beginning of the stream and not in the surroundings, nor in the groundwater system. The lead in the water was found only in colloidal form with a clear pitchblende signature. Those data revealed possible remobilization phenomena along the bedside and margins of the watercourse.

This dissertation aims at enhancing the cultural and linguistic skills in Portuguese of the author of this work, as it is a third language. This activity is carried out starting from the analysis and research of topics mentioned in a number of texts within a particular literary work, “Portugal Vale A Pena”. In this work, many Portuguese personalities express their vision on their country and state why Portugal matters. Since these texts have many cultural references, it can be assumed that such work of analysis and research can lead to better linguistic skills as well as a greater knowledge of the Portuguese culture. All of the chosen texts were originally written by journalists. This choice originates from the important service these professionals provide to the public as well as from the special role their work has played in my interpreting studies over the last couple of years. Chapter 1 explains why I chose this dissertation and who are the target users of these texts. Chapter 2 focuses on the role of journalists. A brief history of modern journalism is presented and its functions are analysed. This chapter also includes a section that examines which values make an event newsworthy. Attention is then paid to the evolution of Portuguese journalism, from Salazar's dictatorship until today. Teaching of journalism in Portuguese academia is also presented. Then, a selection of Portuguese-language media is offered. Chapter 3 focuses on some aspects of Portugal, with particular attention to its history. Finally, Chapter 4 presents a selection of texts from the original book. This part provides a biography of the authors, a translation with a comment and a presentation of some of the topics from the texts. To conclude, a glossary with words and expressions from the original text is included and their translations into Italian, Spanish and English are provided.

Trichinellosis is one of the most important foodborne parasitic zoonoses, caused by nematodes of the genus Trichinella. Pigs and other domestic and wild animals, including red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), are sources of Trichinella infection for human beings. Trichinella britovi is the major agent of infection in sylvatic animals and the most important species circulating in the European wildlife. The present study aimed at assessing Trichinella spp. infection in red foxes from the North of Portugal. Forty-seven carcasses of wild red foxes shot during the official hunting season or killed in road accidents were obtained between November 2008 and March 2010. In order to identify the presence of Trichinella spp. larvae in red foxes, an individual artificial digestion was performed using approximately 30g of muscle samples. Larvae of Trichinella spp. were detected in one (2.1%) out of the 47 assessed foxes. After a multiplex polymerase chain reaction analysis, T. britovi was molecularly identified as the infecting species. The recognition of T. britovi in a red fox confirms that a sylvatic cycle is present in the North of Portugal and that the local prevalence of Trichinella infection in wildlife must not be ignored due to its underlying zoonotic risks.

Portugal is a major producer of tomatoes for processing. Is export industry now ranks 4th worldwide; before the strongly protectionist European Common Market policy initiated in the early 1970s it ranked 3rd. The culture of tomatoes for processing in irrigated areas of Portugal is favored by the dry, warm summer that characterizes Mediterranean climates. In addition the summer in Portugal is not too hot for a good tomato set.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if early defoliation can be an alternative to bunch thinning in limiting yield and improving quality in grapes of the white cultivar Loureiro (Vitis vinifera L.), grafted onto 1103P. The field trial had been set up in a commercial vineyard in Vinhos Verdes Region (Northwest of Portugal, 41º 48? 53? N, 8º 24? 42? W). Treatments studied, performed five days before full bloom were: LR5 ? Leaf removal of the first five basal leaves, performed manually, LR8 ? Leave removal of the first eight basal leaves, LRM ? mechanical leaf removal and C ? the control, without defoliation. This paper reports the results of four years (2010-2013). The results presented a significant removal of main leaf area after defoliation principally in the most intensive treatment (LR8) but at harvest, the total leaf area had been compensated by lateral regrowth and no statistical differences between the treatments and the control were found. Early defoliation caused a decrease in fruit set and also a significant reduction in the diameter of the berry within the more severe defoliation treatments (LR5 and LR8). Yield factors were also significantly affected by the defoliation, causing a reduction of bunch weight and in 2013 a yield reduction in LR8 and LRM, and in 2010 in LR8. Conversely, LR5 presented a yield always similar to the control C. The reduction of cluster compactness and the substantial improvement of the microclimate at the cluster level significantly reduced bunch rot incidence in the defoliated modalities compared to control. No carry-over effects, along the four years trial were observed Early defoliation proved to be a canopy management technique that can have a strong impact in the final quality of grapes, reducing the compactness and lower the incidence and intensity of bunch rot, even if the reduction of yield observed in other papers had not been observed in all modalities.

Mesozoic calcareous nannofossil assemblages recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 149 from the Iberia Abyssal Plain off the coast of Portugal were examined to determine the age of the rifting processes that affected the western Iberia Margin. Dark carbonaceous claystones (black shales) recovered from Site 901 contain highly diverse and abundant Tithonian calcareous nannofossil assemblages. Careful examination and documentation of this material has extended the ranges of numerous Jurassic and Cretaceous species and detailed a significant Late Jurassic assemblage turnover observed in the calcareous nannofossil record. The Lower Cretaceous sequence consists of intervals of serpentinized peridotite intercalated between various breccias and dark claystones. With the exception of a few samples, calcareous nannofossils are few and moderately preserved. The age of nannofossils within these varied sedimentary lithologies ranges from the late Barremian to the late Aptian. Eight new species are described: Ansulasphaera covingtonii, Clepsilithus meniscus, Conusphaera sinespina, Crepidolithus parvulus, Diazomatholithus galicianus, Percivalia arata, Rotelapillus pleoseptatus, and Tranolithus incus. Also proposed are five new combinations.

Cores from the Atlantic Ibero-Moroccan continental rise and slope contain fine-grained Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments. These young sediments cover the continental margin in large lensformed litho- and biostratigraphically well-defined units. The total sedimentation rates range from 4 cm/ 1000 yrs. to 27 cm/1000 yrs. off Portugal and from 6 cm/1000 yrs. to 14 cm/1000 yrs. off Morocco. Only a small proportion of these sediments usually consists of sand-sized particles (>0.063 mm) which are mostly dominated by foraminifera. Both planktonic and benthic foraminifera are much more abundant in Late Pleistocene and Holocene samples from the upper slope in comparison to those from the deeper slope and from the abyssal plains. Total sedimentation rates during cool and warm climatic stages are rather similar for both groups of foraminifera. For example, in Late Holocene sediments 7 x 10**3 benthic and 201 x 10**3 planktonic foraminifera (fraction 0.63 -0.20 mm) per 100 cm**2 and 1000 yrs. are preserved in the Tagus, 10-19 X 10**3 benthic and about 1.3 X 10**6 planktonic foraminifera are preserved in the Seine abyssal plain sediments. Values from the upper slope sediments are higher for benthic foraminifera by a factor of 60 off Portugal and 60 to 70 off Morocco. The values for planktonic ones differ by factors of 6-12 and 6 respectively. These numbers seem to reflect differences in production and preservation. Production rates of planktonic foraminifera generally seem to be somewhat higher during Holocene than during Late Pleistocene, and the rates of benthic foraminifera appear rather higher during Late Pleistocene than during Holocene.
