Photocatalytic degradation of municipal wastewater was investigated using reagent grade TiO2 and modified neodymium doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles. For the first time, surface modification of Nd3+ doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were carried out with n-butylamine as surface modifier under mild hydrothermal conditions. The modified nanoparticles obtained were characterized by Powder XRD, FTIR, DLS, TEM, BET surface area, zeta potential and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated better morphology, particle size distribution and low agglomeration of the nanoparticles synthesized. It was found that photodegradation of wastewater using surface modified neodymium doped TiO2 nanoparticles was more compared to pure TiO2, which can be attributed to the doping and modification with n-butylamine.

Cationic ionenes that bear electron-rich 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) units within the alkylene segment were allowed to interact with different types of electron-deficient, acceptor-containing molecules in an effort to realize intercalation-induced folding of the ionenes; the collapse of the chains was expected to occur in such a way that the donor and acceptor units become arranged in an alternating fashion. Several acceptor-bearing molecules were prepared by the derivatization of pyromellitic dianhydride and naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride with two different oligoethylene glycol monomethyl ether monoamines. This yielded acceptor molecules with different water solubility and allowed the examination of solvophobic effects in the folding process. UV/Vis spectroscopic studies were carried out by using a 1:1 mixture of the DAN-ionenes and different acceptor molecules in water/DMSO solvent mixtures. The intensity of the charge-transfer (CT) band was seen to increase with the water content in the solvent mixture, thereby suggesting that the intercalation is indeed aided by solvophobic effects. The naphthalene diimide (NDI) bearing acceptor molecules consistently formed significantly stronger CT complexes when compared to the pyromellitic diimide (PDI) bearing acceptor molecules, which is a reflection of the stronger pi-stacking tendency of the former. AFM studies of drop-cast films of different ionene-acceptor combinations revealed that compact folded structures are formed most effectively under conditions in which the strongest CT complex is formed.

The compounds Zn(C12H8N2)](2)C12N2H8(COO)(2)](2)center dot(C6H12O)center dot(H2O), I, Zn(C12H8N2)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)], II, Cd(C12H8N2)(H2O)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)]center dot(H2O), III, Zn(C10N2H8)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)]center dot 0.5(C10N2H8), IV, Cd(C12N2H8(COO)(2)center dot H2O], V, and Zn-3(mu(2)-O)(mu(3)-O)(3)]C12N2H8(COO)(2)], VI, have been synthesized by using a biphasic approach (I, III, V, VI) or regular hydrothermal method (II, IV). The compounds exhibit one (I and II), two (In), and three dimensionally (IV, V, VI) extended structures. The flexible azodibenzoate ligand gives rise to a 3-fold interpenetration (IV) when the synthesis was carried out using normal hydrothermal methods. The biphasic approach forms structures without any interpenetrations, especially in the three-dimensional structures of V and VI. Formation of Cd2O2 dimers in V and extended M-O(H)-M two-dimensional layers in VI suggests the subtle structural control achieved by the biphasic method. Transformation studies indicate that it is possible to transform I to II. Lewis acid catalytic studies have been performed to evaluate the role of the coordination environment in such reactions. All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques that includes powder X-ray diffraction, infrared, thermogravitric analysis, UV-vis, photoluminescence studies.

K(2,2,2-crypt)](2)As-7]center dot THF, 1 (2,2,2-crypt = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo8.8.8]hexacosane) is the first well characterized seven-atom radical anion of group 15. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirms the presence and electronic structure of As-7](2-). Cyclic voltammetry in DMF solution shows the As-7(3) /As-7(2) redox couple as a one-electron reversible process. Theoretical investigations explore the bonding and properties of compound 1.

Gd2O3:Eu3+ (4 mol%) nanophosphor co-doped with Li+ ions have been synthesized by low-temperature solution combustion technique in a short time. Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-VIS and photoluminescence (PL) techniques have been employed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. It is found that the lattice of Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphor transforms from monoclinic to cubic as the Li+-ions are doped. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor showed characteristic luminescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 0-4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 626 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) of Eu3+ ions was stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 595 nm (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)). Furthermore, the effects of the Li+ co-doping as well as calcinations temperature on the PL properties have been studied. The results show that incorporation of Li+ ions in Gd2O3:Eu3+ lattice could induce a remarkable improvement of their PL intensity. The emission intensity was observed to be enhanced four times than that of with out Li+-doped Gd2O3:Eu3+. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved,

A high-throughput screening was employed to identify new compounds in Cu(CH3COO)(2)center dot H2O-NIPA-heterocyclic ligand systems. Of the compounds identified, three compounds, Cu-3{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(3)(C3N6H6)] (1), Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN4H)]center dot-(H2O) (II), and Cu-2(mu(3)-OH)(H2O){(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2}-)(CN5H2)]center dot 2(H2O) (III), have been isolated as good quality single crystals by employing conventional hydrothermal methods. Three other compounds, Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}-(CN4H)(H2O) (IIa), Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}(CN5H2) (IIIa), and Cu-2{(NO2)-C6H3-(COO)(2)}{(CN5H2)(2)}2H(2)O (IIIb), were identified by a combination of elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and IR spectroscopic studies, although their structures are yet to be determined. The single crystalline compounds were also characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, IR, UV vis, magnetic, and catalytic studies. The structures of the compounds have paddle wheel (I) and infinite Cu 0(H) Cu chains (II and HI) connected with NLPA and heterocyclic ligands forming two-(II) and three-dimensional (I and III) structures. The bound and lattice water molecules in 11 and 111 could be reversibly removed/inserted without affecting the structure. In the case of II, the removal of water gives rise to a structural transition, but the dehydrated phase reverts back to the original phase on prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions. Magnetic studies indicate an overall antiferromagnetism in all of the compounds. Lewis acid catalytic studies indicate that compounds II and HI are active for cyanosilylation of imines.

The free-base, copper(II) and zinc(II) derivatives of 5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin (aryl = phenyl, 4-methylphenyl or 4-chlorophenyl) and the corresponding brominated 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraarylporphyrin derivatives have been synthesized and their spectral and redox properties compared by UV/VIS, H-1 NMR, ESR and cyclic voltammetric methods. Substitution with the electron-withdrawing bromine groups at the pyrrole carbons has a profound influence on the UV/VIS and H-1 NMR spectral features and also on the redox potentials of these systems. On the other hand, electron-withdrawing chloro or electron-donating methyl groups at the para positions of the four phenyl rings have only a marginal effect on the spectra and redox potentials of both the brominated and the non-brominated derivatives. The ESR data for the copper(II) derivatives of ail these systems reveal that substitution at either the beta-pyrrole carbons and/or the para positions of the meso-phenyl groups does not significantly affect the spin-Hamiltonian parameters that describe the metal centre in each case. Collectively, these observations suggest that the highest-occupied (HOMO) and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) of the octabromoporphyrins involve the porphyrin pi-ring system as is the case with the non-brominated derivatives.-Investigations have been carried out to probe the electronic structures of these systems by three different approaches involving spectral and redox potential data as well as AMI calculations. The results obtained suggest that the electron-withdrawing beta-bromine substituents stabilize the LUMOs and, to a lesser degree, the HOMOs and that the extent of these changes can be fine-tuned, in a subtle way, by substituting at the meso-aryl rings of a given porphyrin.

Cu (0.1 mol%) doped ZnO nanopowders have been successfully synthesized by a wet chemical method at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements were used for characterization. PXRD results confirm that the nanopowders exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO without any secondary phase. The particle size of as-formed product has been calculated by Williamson-Hall (W-H) plots and Scherrer's formula is found to be in the range of similar to 40 nm. TEM image confirms the nano size crystalline nature of Cu doped ZnO. SEM micrographs of undoped and Cu doped ZnO show highly porous with large voids. UV-Vis spectrum showed a red shift in the absorption edge in Cu doped ZnO. PL spectra show prominent peaks corresponding to near band edge UV emission and defect related green emission in the visible region at room temperature and their possible mechanisms have been discussed. The EPR spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049, and two narrow resonances one at g similar to 1.990 and other at g similar to 1.950. The broad resonance signal at g similar to 2.049 is a characteristic of Cu2+ ion whereas the signal at g similar to 1.990 and g similar to 1.950 can be attributed to ionized oxygen vacancies and shallow donors respectively. The spin concentration (N) and paramagnetic susceptibility (X) have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

This report deals with a study of the properties of internal cavities of dendritic macromolecules that are capable Of encapsulating and mediating photoreactions of guest molecules. The internal cavity structures of dendrimers are determined by the interfacial regions between the aqueous exterior and hydrocarbon like interior constituted by the linkers that connect symmetrically sited branch points constituting the dendrimer and head groups that cap the dendrimers. Phloroglucinol-based poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers constituted with a homologous series of alkyl linkers were undertaken for the current study. Twelve dendrimers within first, second, and third generations, having ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, and n-pentyl groups as the linkers and hydroxyl groups at peripheries in each generation, were synthesized. Encapsulation of pyrene and coumarins by aqueous basic solutions of dendrimers were monitored-by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, which showed that a lower generation dendrimer with an optimal alkyl linker presented better encapsulation abilities than a higher generation dendrimer. Norrish type I photoreaction of dibenzyl ketone was carried out within the above: series of dendrimers to probe their abilities to hold guests and reactive inthermediate radical pairs within themselves. The extent of cage effect from the series of third generation dendrimers was observed to be higher with dendrimers having an n-pentyl group as the linker.

Nicotinate-N-oxide and isonicotinate-N-oxide have been employed to synthesize four heterometallic metallamacrocycles (dppf)(2)Pd-2(nicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (1), (dppf)(2)Pt-2(nicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (2), (dppf) 2Pd2(isonicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (3) and (dppf)(2)Pt-2(isonicotinate-N-oxide)(2)](OTf)(2) (4). The complexes represent the first examples of metallamacrocycles driven by solely Pd(II)/Pt(II)-O coordination using carboxylate-N-oxide donor. All the complexes 1-4 are characterized by IR, UV-Vis, multinuclear NMR spectroscopic and ESI-MS studies. The molecular structures of the complexes 1 and 3 are unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Despite the possibility of formation of several linkage isomers due to ambidentate nature of the donors, exclusive formation of 2 + 2] self-assembled single isomeric metallamacrocycle in each case is interesting observation. The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Copper(I)-dppm complexes encapsulating the oxyanions ClO4-, NO3-, CH3C6H4CO2-, SO42-, and WO42- have been synthesized either by reduction of the corresponding Cu(II) salts and treatment with dppm, or by treating the complex [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(3)](BF4)(2) (1) (dmcn = dimethyl cyanamide) with the respective anion. The isolated complexes [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(ClO4)] (ClO4) (2), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(dmcn)(2)(NO3)] (NO3) (3), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(NO3)(2) (4), [Cu-2(dppm)(2)(CH3C6H4CO2)(2)]dmcn.2THF (5), Cu-2(dppm)(2)(SO4) (6), and [Cu-3(dppm)(3)(Cl)(WO4)] 0.5H(2)O (7) have been characterized by IR, H-1 and P-31{H-1} NMR, UV-vis, and emission spectroscopy. The solid-state molecular structure of complexes 1, 2, 4, and 7 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Pertinent crystal data are as follows: for 1, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 11.376(10) Angstrom, b = 42.503(7) Angstrom, c = 13.530(6) Angstrom, beta = 108.08(2)degrees, V = 6219(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 2, monoclinic P2(1)/c, a = 21.600(3) Angstrom, b = 12.968(3) Angstrom, c = 23.050(3) Angstrom, beta = 115.97(2)degrees, V = 5804(17) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for 4, triclinic
, a = 10.560(4) Angstrom, b = 10.553(3) Angstrom, c = 22.698(3) Angstrom, alpha = 96.08(2)degrees, beta = 96.03(2)degrees, gamma = 108.31(2)degrees, V = 2362(12) Angstrom(3), Z = 2; and for 7, orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 14.407(4) Angstrom, b = 20.573(7) Angstrom, c = 24.176(6) Angstrom, V = 7166(4) Angstrom(3), Z = 4. Analyses of the crystallographic and spectroscopic data of these complexes reveal the nature of interactions between the Cu-I-dppm core and oxyanion. The anchoring of the oxyanion to the Cu-n(dppm)(n) unit is primarily through coordination to the metal, but the noncovalent C-H ... O interactions between the methylene and phenyl protons of the dppm and oxygen atoms of the oxyanion play a significant role. The solid-state emission spectra for complexes 1-6 are very similar but different from 7. In CDCl3 solution, addition of ClO4- or NO3- (as their tetrabutylammonium salts) to 1 establishes a rapid equilibrium between the anion-complexed and uncomplexed forms. The association constant values for ClO4- and NO3- have been estimated from the P-31{H-1} NMR spectra.

Copolymers of aniline and ortholmeta-amino benzoic acid were synthesized by chemical polymerization using an inverse emulsion pathway. The copolymers are soluble in organic solvents, and the solubility increases with the amino benzoic acid content in the feed. The reaction conditions were optimized with emphasis on high yield and relatively good conductivity (2.5 X 10(-1) S cm(-1)). The copolymers were characterized by a number of techniques including UV-vis, FT-IR, FT-Raman, EPR and NNM spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM and conductivity. The influence of the carboxylic acid group ring substituent on the copolymers is investigated. The spectral studies reveal that the amino benzoic acid groups restrict the conjugation along the polymer chain. The SEM micrographs of the copolymers reveal regions of amorphous and crystalline domain. Thermal studies indicate a marginally higher thermal stability for poly(aniline-co-m-amino benzoic acid) compared to poly(aniline-co-o-amino benzoic acid). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Novel gold nanoparticles bearing cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based amphiphilic units have been synthesized. These nanoparticles represent size-stable entities in which various cationic lipids have been immobilized through their thiol group onto the gold nanoparticle core. The resulting colloids have been characterized by UV-vis, (1)H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The average size of the resultant nanoparticles could be controlled by the relative bulkiness of the capping agent. Thus, the average diameters of the nanoparticles formed from the cationic single-chain, double-chain, and cholesterol based thiolate-coated materials were 5.9,2.9, and 2.04 nm, respectively. We also examined the interaction of these cationic gold nanoparticles with vesicular membranes generated from dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipid suspensions. Nanoparticle doped DPPC vesicular suspensions displayed a characteristic surface plasmon band in their UV-vis spectra. Inclusion of nanoparticles in vesicular suspensions led to increases in the aggregate diameters, as evidenced from dynamic light scattering. Differential scanning calorimetric examination indicated that incorporation of single-chain, double-chain, and cholesteryl-linked cationic nanoparticles exert variable effects on the DPPC melting transitions. While increased doping of single-chain nanoparticles in DPPC resulted in the phases that melt at higher temperatures, inclusion of an incremental amount of double-chain nanoparticles caused the lowering of the melting temperature of DPPC. On the other hand, the cationic cholesteryl nanoparticle interacted with DPPC in membranes in a manner somewhat analogous to that of cholesterol itself and caused broadening of the DPPC melting transition.

Copolymers of o-lm-toluidine with o-lm-amino benzoic acid have been synthesized by chemical polymerization using inverse emulsion pathway and characterized by a number of techniques including UV-Vis, FT-IR, FT Raman, EPR and NMR spectroscopies, thermal analysis and conductivity. The solubility of the copolymers in organic solvents increases with increase in the amount of amino benzoic acid in the feed. The copolymers synthesized at room temperature show relatively higher conductivity and are obtained in higher yield compared to those synthesized at 0 and 60 degreesC. The spectral studies have revealed restricted conjugation along the polymer chain. The effect of -COOH substituent on the copolymer structure is discussed.
