The solar wind continuously flows out from the Sun and directly interacts with the surfaces of dust and airless planetary bodies throughout the solar system. A significant fraction of solar wind ions reflect from an object's surface as energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). ENA emission from the Moon was first observed during commissioning of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission on 3 December 2008. We present the analysis of 10 additional IBEX observations of the Moon while it was illuminated by the solar wind. For the viewing geometry and energy range (> 250 eV) of the IBEX-Hi ENA imager, we find that the spectral shape of the ENA emission from the Moon is well-represented by a linearly decreasing flux with increasing energy. The fraction of the incident solar wind ions reflected as ENAs, which is the ENA albedo and defined quantitatively as the ENA reflection coefficient RN, depends on the incident solar wind speed, ranging from ~0.2 for slow solar wind to ~0.08 for fast solar wind. The average energy per incident solar wind ion that is reflected to space is 30 eV for slow solar wind and 45 eV for fast solar wind. Once ionized, these ENAs can become pickup ions in the solar wind with a unique spectral signature that reaches 3vSW. These results apply beyond the solar system; the reflection process heats plasmas that have significant bulk flow relative to interstellar dust and cools plasmas having no net bulk flow relative to the dust.

The Sun shows strong variability in its magnetic activity, from Grand minima to Grand maxima, but the nature of the variability is not fully understood, mostly because of the insufficient length of the directly observed solar activity records and of uncertainties related to long-term reconstructions. Here we present a new adjustment-free reconstruction of solar activity over three millennia and study its different modes. Methods. We present a new adjustment-free, physical reconstruction of solar activity over the past three millennia, using the latest verified carbon cycle, 14C production, and archeomagnetic field models. This great improvement allowed us to study different modes of solar activity at an unprecedented level of details. Results. The distribution of solar activity is clearly bi-modal, implying the existence of distinct modes of activity. The main regular activity mode corresponds to moderate activity that varies in a relatively narrow band between sunspot numbers 20 and 67. The existence of a separate Grand minimum mode with reduced solar activity, which cannot be explained by random fluctuations of the regular mode, is confirmed at a high confidence level. The possible existence of a separate Grand maximum mode is also suggested, but the statistics is too low to reach a confident conclusion. Conclusions. The Sun is shown to operate in distinct modes – a main general mode, a Grand minimum mode corresponding to an inactive Sun, and a possible Grand maximum mode corresponding to an unusually active Sun. These results provide important constraints for both dynamo models of Sun-like stars and investigations of possible solar influence on Earth’s climate.

Today, there is little knowledge on the attitude state of decommissioned intact objects in Earth orbit. Observational means have advanced in the past years, but are still limited with respect to an accurate estimate of motion vector orientations and magnitude. Especially for the preparation of Active Debris Removal (ADR) missions as planned by ESA’s Clean Space initiative or contingency scenarios for ESA spacecraft like ENVISAT, such knowledge is needed. ESA's “Debris Attitude Motion Measurements and Modelling” project (ESA Contract No. 40000112447), led by the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB), addresses this problem. The goal of the project is to achieve a good understanding of the attitude evolution and the considerable internal and external effects which occur. To characterize the attitude state of selected targets in LEO and GTO, multiple observation methods are combined. Optical observations are carried out by AIUB, Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is performed by the Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (IWF) and radar measurements and signal level determination are provided by the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques (FHR). The In-Orbit Tumbling Analysis tool (ιOTA) is a prototype software, currently in development by Hyperschall Technologie Göttingen GmbH (HTG) within the framework of the project. ιOTA will be a highly modular software tool to perform short-(days), medium-(months) and long-term (years) propagation of the orbit and attitude motion (six degrees-of-freedom) of spacecraft in Earth orbit. The simulation takes into account all relevant acting forces and torques, including aerodynamic drag, solar radiation pressure, gravitational influences of Earth, Sun and Moon, eddy current damping, impulse and momentum transfer from space debris or micro meteoroid impact, as well as the optional definition of particular spacecraft specific influences like tank sloshing, reaction wheel behaviour, magnetic torquer activity and thruster firing. The purpose of ιOTA is to provide high accuracy short-term simulations to support observers and potential ADR missions, as well as medium-and long-term simulations to study the significance of the particular internal and external influences on the attitude, especially damping factors and momentum transfer. The simulation will also enable the investigation of the altitude dependency of the particular external influences. ιOTA's post-processing modules will generate synthetic measurements for observers and for software validation. The validation of the software will be done by cross-calibration with observations and measurements acquired by the project partners.

Context. The ESA Rosetta spacecraft (S/C) is tracking comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in close vicinity. This prolonged encounter enables studying the evolution of the volatile coma composition. Aims. Our work aims at comparing the diversity of the coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at large heliocentric distance to study the evolution of the comet during its passage around the Sun and at trying to classify it relative to other comets. Methods. We used the Double Focussing Mass Spectrometer (DFMS) of the ROSINA experiment on ESA’s Rosetta mission to determine relative abundances of major and minor volatile species. This study is restricted to species that have previously been detected elsewhere. Results. We detect almost all species currently known to be present in cometary coma with ROSINA DFMS. As DFMS measured the composition locally, we cannot derive a global abundance, but we compare measurements from the summer and the winter hemisphere with known abundances from other comets. Differences between relative abundances between summer and winter hemispheres are large, which points to a possible evolution of the cometary surface. This comet appears to be very rich in CO2 and ethane. Heavy oxygenated compounds such as ethylene glycol are underabundant at 3 AU, probably due to their high sublimation temperatures, but nevertheless, their presence proves that Kuiper belt comets also contain complex organic molecules.

Measurements of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) have been extremely successful in providing very important information on the physical processes inside and outside of our heliosphere. For instance, recent Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) observations have provided new insights into the local interstellar environment and improved measurements of the interstellar He temperature, velocity, and direction of the interstellar flow vector. Since particle collisions are rare, and radiation pressure is negligible for these neutrals, gravitational forces mainly determine the trajectories of neutral He atoms. Depending on the distance of an ENA to the source of a gravitational field and its relative speed and direction, this can result in significant deflection and acceleration. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the gravitational effects of Earth, the Moon, and Jupiter on ENA measurements performed in Earth's orbit. The results show that current analysis of the interstellar neutral parameters by IBEX is not significantly affected by planetary gravitational effects. We further studied the possibility of whether or not the Helium focusing cone of the Sun and Jupiter could be measured by IBEX and whether or not these cones could be used as an independent measure of the temperature of interstellar Helium.

During the International Indian Ocean Expedition (1964/65) sediment cores were taken on six profiles off the western coast of the Indian Subcontinent. These profiles run approximately perpendicular to the coast, from the deep-sea over the continental slope to the continental shelf. Additional samples and cores were taken in a dense pattern in front of the delta of the Indus River. This pattern of sampling covered not only marine sediments, but also river and beach sediments in Pakistan. The marine samples were obtained with piston, gravity and box corers and by a Van Veen grab sampler. The longest piston core is about 5 meters long. 1. Distribution of the elements on the sediment surface The area of maximal carbonate values (aprox. 80-100% CaCO3) essentially coincides with the continental shelf. The highest Sr values were observed largely within this area, but only in the vicinity of the Gulf of Cambay. Mainly the aragonitic coprolites are responsible for those high Sr contents. The Mg contents of the carbonates are comparatively low; surprisingly enough the highest Mg concentrations were also measured in the coprolites. The maximum contents of organic matter (Core) were found along the upper part of the continental slope. They coincide with the highest porosity and water content of the sediments. Frequently the decomposition of organic matter by oxydation is responsible for the measured Corg contents. On the other side the quantity of originally deposited organic material is less important in most cases. The enrichment of the "bauxitophile" elements Fe, Ti, Cr and V in the carbonate- and quartz-free portions of the sediments is essentially due to the influence of coarse terrigenous detritus. For the elements Mn, Ni and Cu (in per cent of the carbonateand quartz-free sediment) a strong enrichment was observed in the deep-sea realm. The strong increase in Mn toward the deep-sea is explained by authigenesis of Mn-Fe-concretions. Mn-nodules form only under oxydizing conditions which obviously are possible only at very low rates of deposition. The Mg, B and, probably also Mn contents in the clay minerals increase with increasing distance from the continent. This can be explained by the higher adsorption of those elements from sea water because of increasing duration of the clay mineral transport. The comparison of median contents of some elements in our deep-sea samples with deep-sea sediments described by TUREKIAN & WEDEPOHL (1961) shows that clear differences in concentration exist only in the case of "bauxitophile" elements Cr and Be. The Cr and Be contents show a clear increase in the Indian Ocean deep-sea samples compared to those described by TUREKIAn & WEDEPOHL (1961) which can obviously be attributed to the enrichment in the lateritic and bauxitic parent rocks. The different behaviour of the elements Fe, Ti and Mn during decomposition of the source rocks, transport to the sea and during oxydizing and reducing conditions in the marine environment can be illustrated by Ti02/Fe and MnO/Fe ratios. The different compositions of the sediments off the Indus Delta and those of the remaining part of the area investigated are characterized by a different distribution of the elements Mn and Ti. 2. Chemical inhomogenities in the sediments Most longer cores show 3 intervals defined by chemical and sedimentological differences. The top-most interval is coarse-grained, the intermedial interval is fine grained and the lower one again somewhat coarser. At the same time it is possible to observe differences from interval to interval in the organogenic and detrital constituents. During the formation of the middle interval different conditions of sedimentation from those active during the previous and subsequent periods have obviously prevailed. Looking more closely at the organogenic constituents it is remarkable that during the formation of the finer interval conditions of a more intensive oxydation have prevailed that was the case before and after: Core decreases, whereas P shows a relative increase. This may be explained by slower sedimentation rate or by a vertical migration of the oxygen rich zone of the sea-water. The modifications of the elements from minerals in detrital portion of the sediments support an explanation ascribing this fact to modifications of the conditions of denudation and transportation which can come about through a climatic change or through tectonic causes. The paleontological investigations have shown (ZOBEL, in press) that in some of the cores the middle stratum of fine sedimentation represents optimal conditions for organic life. This fact suggests also oxydizing conditions during the sedimentation of this interval. In addition to the depositional stratification an oxydation zone characterized by Mn-enrichment can be recognized. The thickness of the oxidation zone decreases towards the coast and thins out along the middle part of the continental slope. At those places, where the oxydation zone is extremely thin, enrichment of Mn has its maximum. This phenomenon can probably be attributed to the migration of Mn taking place in its dissociated form within the sediment under reducing conditions. On the other side this Mn-migration in the sediment does not take place in the deep-sea, where oxydizing conditions prevail. 3. Interstitial waters in the sediments Already at very small core depths, the interstitial waters have undergone a distinct modification compared with the overlying sea water. This distinct modification applies both to total salinity and to the individual ions. As to the beginning of diagenesis the following conclusions can be drawn: a) A strong K-increase occurs already at an early stage. It may be attributable to a diffusion barrier or to an exchange of Mg-ions on the clays. Part of this increase may also originate from the decomposition of K-containing silicates (mica and feldspars). A K-decrease owing to the formation of illite (WEAVER 1967), however, occurs only at much greater sediment depth. b) Because of an organic protective coating, the dissolution of carbonate is delayed in recent organogenic carbonates. At the same time some Ca is probably being adsorbed on clay minerals. Consequently the Ca-content of the interstitial water drops below the Ca-content of the sea water. c) Already at an early stage the Mg adsorption on the clays is completed. The adsorbed Mg is later available for diagenetic mineral formations and transformations.

ABSTRACT Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) is one of the most promising ways of reducing the cost of energy collected from the sun. This is possible thanks to both, very high-efficiency solar cells and a large decrease in the size of cells, which are made of costly semiconductor materials. Both issues are closely linked since high efficiency values are only possible with expensive cell materials and technologies, implying a compulsory area reduction if cost-effectiveness is desired. The reduction in the cell size requires that light coming from the sun must be redirected (i.e. concentrated) towards the cell position. This is achieved by placing an optical concentrator system on top of the cell. These CPV concentrators consist of different optical elements manufactured on cheap materials in order to maintain low production costs. The optimal framework for the design of concentrators is nonimaging optics. Nonimaging optics was first developed in the 60s decade and has been largely developed ever since. The aim of nonimaging devices is the efficient transfer of light power between the source and the receiver (sun and cell respectively in the case of CPV), disregarding image formation. Nonimaging systems are usually simple, comprised of fewer surfaces than imaging systems and are more tolerant to manufacturing errors. This renders nonimaging optics a fundamental tool, not only in the design of photovoltaic concentrators, but also in the design of other applications as illumination, projection and wireless optical communications. Nonimaging optical concentrators are well suited for CPV applications because the goal is not the reproduction of an exact image of the sun (as imaging optics would provide), but simply the collection of its energy on the solar cell. Concentrators for CPV may present very different architectures and optical elements, resulting in a vast variety of possible designs. The first optical element that sunlight goes through is called the Primary Optical Element (POE) and is the most determinant element in order to define the shape and properties of the whole concentrator. The POE can be either refractive (lens) or reflective (mirror). This thesis focuses on CPV systems based on Fresnel lenses as POE, which are thin and inexpensive refractive lenses able to concentrate sunlight. Chapter 1 exposes a short introduction to geometrical and nonimaging optics, explaining their fundamentals and basic concepts. Then, the Köhler integration is presented in detail, explaining its principles, valid for both applications: CPV and illumination. An introduction to CPV fundamental concepts is also included in this chapter, analyzing the properties of multijunction solar cells and optical concentrators employed in CPV systems. The chapter is closed with a description of the existing technologies employed for the manufacture of optical elements composing the concentrator. Chapter 2 is mainly devoted to the design and development of the three advanced Fresnel Köhler optical concentrators presented in this thesis work: Fresnel-Köhler (FK), Dome-shaped Fresnel-Köhler (DFK) and Cavity Fresnel-Köhler (CFK). They all perform Köhler integration and comprise a Fresnel lens as their Primary Optical Element. Each one of these CPV concentrators presents its own characteristics, properties and its own design procedure. Their performances include all the key issues in a concentrator: high concentration factor, large tolerances, high optical efficiency, uniform irradiance on the cell surface and low production cost. The FK and DFK concentrators present a 4-fold configuration in order to perform the Köhler integration. This means that POE and SOE are divided into four symmetric sectors each one, working each POE sector with its corresponding SOE sector by pairs. The main difference between both concentrators is that the POE of the FK is a flat Fresnel lens, while a dome-shaped (curved) Fresnel lens performs as the DFK’s POE. The CFK concentrator includes an integrated external confinement cavity, which is an optical element able to recover rays reflected by the cell surface in order to be re-absorbed by the cell. It increases the light absorption, entailing an increase in the efficiency of the module. Additionally, an alternative design method for faceted elements will also be explained, especially suitable for dome-shaped lenses as the POE of the DFK. Chapter 3 focuses on the characterization and experimental measurements of the optical concentrators presented in Chapter 2, describing their procedures. These procedures are in general applicable to any Fresnel-based concentrator as well and include three main types of experimental measurements: electrical efficiency, acceptance angle and irradiance uniformity at the solar cell plane. The results shown along this chapter will validate through outdoor measurements under real sun operation the advanced characteristics presented by the Köhler concentrators, which are demonstrated in Chapter 2 through raytrace simulation: high optical efficiency, large acceptance angle, insensitivity to manufacturing tolerances and very good irradiance uniformity on the cell surface. Each concentrator (FK, DFK and CFK) is designed and optimized looking at realistic performance characteristics. Their performances are modeled exhaustively using ray tracing combined with cell modeling, taking into account the major relevant factors. The tolerance is a critical issue when coming to the manufacturing process in order to obtain cost-effective mass-production systems. Concentrators with tight tolerances result in significant efficiency drops at array level caused by current mismatch among different modules (mainly due to manufacturing alignment errors). In this sense, Section 3.5 presents two mathematical methods that estimate these mismatch losses for a given array just by analyzing its full-array I-V curve, hence being unnecessary any single mono-module measurement. Chapter 3 also describes the indoor characterization of the optical elements composing the concentrators, i.e. the Fresnel lenses acting as POEs and the free-form SOEs. The aim of this characterization is to assess the proper surface profiles and optical transmissions of the different elements analyzed, so they will allow for the expected module performance. This thesis is closed by Chapter 4, in which Köhler integration is presented as a good approach to obtain uniform distributions in Solid State Lighting applications (i.e. illumination with LEDs), being particularly effective when dealing with color mixing requirements. This chapter shows it through the particular example of a DFK concentrator, which has been used for CPV applications in the previous chapters. An alternative known method for color mixing purposes (anomalous deflections) has also been used to design a thin aplanatic TIR lens. This lens fulfills conservation of étendue, thus ensuring no light blocking and no light dilution at the same time. Both approaches present clear advantages over the classical techniques employed in lighting to obtain uniform illumination distributions: diffusers and kaleidoscopic lightpipe mixing.

ABSTRACT In the middle of a Danish forest, with high trees which move with the Nordic wind under the weak sun of high latitudes, and with the help of some wooden canvases acquired from an already completed exhibition, Jørn Utzon built a real-scale model of his first family house in Hellebæk (1950-52) at the age of thirty-two. In the same way that William Turner needed to be tied up on the top of a boat flagpole in order to have a first-hand experience of one of the many storms that he had depicted in his paintings so many times before, the young Utzon thought it was crucial to go into the model of his own house before building it, to evaluate in situ the potential of that project in relation to the place. Utzon’s work is architecture interested in and attentive of the place where it is situated. Jørn Utzon (1918-2008) is an architect of Nordic origin who discovered his own idiosyncrasy in the Mediterranean culture, in which he resided for half of his live. This thesis has focused on an exhaustive analysis of the relation between his domestic architecture and the place where it is located. This issue has been often cited in the existing bibliography, although it has never been exhaustively developed. The analysis objective has been to attempt to find invariants and patterns that could exist in his domestic work in relation to this subject. For this analysis, a sufficiently large sample has been selected: twenty houses or housing complexes (among others his own four family houses), distributed in five countries (Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Spain and New South Wales), which constitute the third part of his domestic work, and half of his residential constructed projects, as well as Utzon’s written texts about this theme, and the drawings and sketches of his graphic work. The methodology used was based on consultation of primary sources: travelling and examining in situ the selected houses in Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Australia; living for a month in one of the houses (Can Lis) thanks to a research grant from the Danish Government and the Utzon Foundation; and interviewing people from his closest family and professional circles. Furthermore, part of the thesis has been published in international media: 4th International Utzon Symposium (7/3/2013-9/3/2014) and on the official web site of Can Lis, an Utzon Foundation subsidiary(www.canlis.dk). The twelve invariants discovered in relation to the project and the location of the selected projects, have been grouped according to three elements which Utzon continuously reflects upon in his own writings: the horizon, the sun and autochthonous material. Elements which originate from the influence that navigation had in his life, and from his spiritual and austere character. The story of Utzon is that of a Nordic person, with the vocation of a navigator, who found his place in the Mediterranean culture, surrounded with Marés stones, while silently making out the sea horizon on the threshold between light and shadow.
