ABSTRACT In the approach of the thesis is developed a methodology for the construction of a representative palette of urban space. The main objective is to find a representative palette in order to determine color differences between urban areas of different age and urban composition. In the prior art is described first color theory highlighting the factors that influencing the perceptual color process; in second it is a qualifying study of various color systems and the theory of color verbality and finally is an analysis of public space pointing in the relationship between morphology and the color factor. For the construction of the color palette is carried out computer processing of digital photos in an application that has been created specifically for the extraction and conversion of color values and a filtering process with statistical calculation for the election of the samples. In analyzing a relationship between urban factors and the resulting color as an instrument is also set to determine the correlation of certain urban characteristics with the color behavior. The resulting color of each space is set by the HSL color system and its composition is evaluated and compared between the different established points of analysis and different orientations. Finally, based on the color palettes, arises a comparison between urban spaces in the city of Madrid with the aim of establishing color differences between urban approaches of different morphological and constructive nature.

ABSTRACT One of the most important issues facing our society is the degradation of the environment caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. Capturing CO2 emissions, injection and burial in deep geological reservoirs is presented as a solution until the medium or long term, when the problem of the current dependence on fossil fuels burning can be mitigated. But the stability of these reservoirs should be properly monitored. In this work we study the problem of detecting CO2 leakage in a natural analogue of a deep storage site through analysis of multispectral satellite imagery. The analogue used is in the Campo de Calatrava (Ciudad Real, Spain) where, due to the remaining volcanic activity, it can still be found numerous CO2 emission points. CO2 emission points have been characterized identifying two types having distinct characteristics and effects: wet emission points or hotbeds, and dry emission points or fumaroles. For this study it has been used vegetation indices and its relationship with atmospheric CO2 contents. It has been used multispectral images from QuickBird and WorldView‐2 satellites. It has been done a preselection of twelve vegetation indices especially suitable for the detection of CO2 emission points. Using analysis and comparison of vegetation index images on real emission points it has been selected the five indexes with greater sensitivity to this phenomenon. Based upon the main factors of the emergence of new CO2 emission points it has been made a prediction of new emission points over the vegetation index images. Among the candidate points it has been found three new CO2 emission points not previously described in the literature.

ABSTRACT A feature of participatory mapping and PGIS is to include the participation of the civil society, to provide qualitative information of their territories. However, focus is not only data, but also the effects that such practices themselves may have on the territory and their society. Access to this information is reduced in contrast to the increase of information disseminated through visualization services, geoinformation, and online cartography. Thus, the analysis of the real scope of participatory methodologies in the use of Geographic Information (GI) is necessary, including the comparison of different geographical contexts. It is also important to know the benefits and disadvantages of access to information needed for planning in different contexts, ranging from unnoticed rural areas and suburbs to influence on government programs on land management through local spatial knowledge. The analysis focused on the participation levels of civil society and the degrees of accessibility of the information (access and use) within the study of Participatory GIS (PGIS). In addition, this work studies GIT (Geographic Information Technologies), online cartographies (Geoweb) and platforms of spatial geovisualization, as resources of Neocartography. A participatory cartographic fieldwork was carried out in Bolivia. Several PGIS projects were evaluated in Northern and Southern countries (comparatively with the context of developing countries), and the results were analyzed for each these different variables. (validation, accessibility, verification, value, identity). The thesis considers that both factors (participation levels and degree of accessibility) affect the (i) validation, verification and quality of the data, (ii) analytical value for planning, and (iii) the identity of a place. The integrated management of all the above cited criteria constitutes an added value that PGISs can contribute to reach an effective planning. Also, it confirms the participatory dimension of PGISs varies according to the context, the centralization of its actors, and to sectorial interests. The resulting information from PGIS practices tends to be restricted by the lack of legislation and by the absence of standard formats, which limits in turn the diffusion and exchange of the information. All of this has repercussions in the effectiveness of a strategic planning and in the viability of the implementation of projects about the territory, and consequentially in the land development levels. The hypothesis is confirmed since all the described elements in PGISs and participatory mapping will act as valid tools in strengthening and improving the effectivity in planning only if they are interconnected and linked amongst themselves. This work, therefore, suggests a methodological proposal when faced with the conventional ways of planning: a new planning route which includes the resources exchange and local participatory determination before any plan is established -. With this, the benefits of participatory methodologies in the management of GI and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is incorporated as a strategic instrument for development of local identity and optimization in planning processes and territory studies. Finally, the study outlines future work on PGIS maps and Participatory Mapping, such that these could eventually evolve into visual representative instruments that transfer identity values of the territory and its society. In this way, they would contribute to attain a better knowledge, recognition, and appraisement of the territories for their inhabitants and planners.

ABSTRACT The thesis deals with the study of CLESA's Dairy Plant, one of the most significant industrial buildings of the Decade of the fifties in Spain, by Alejandro de la Sota. The Dairies were addressed by Sota at various occasions between 1955 and 1969, being the CLESA plant the only one that is has been built. This is one of the most brilliant exponents of Spanish industrial post-war modern architecture, included in "The architecture industry, IBERIAN DOCOMOMO RECORD"3 between the score of selected buildings of Madrid architecture of this period. It poses a singular solution to achieve the openness of the space required in the implementation of the manufacturing process. The structure of the nave is done with prestressed concrete, being one of the pioneers in the use of this technique. The initial hypothesis considers the reality of the project built from the architecture in response to an industrial program solved with simplicity, that from a resource economy that is inherent, gets from the consistency of the approach, solutions where the space complexity is an effective response of great interest. The objectives of this thesis are to contribute to a rigorous knowledge of the building, which allows to discover the particularity of its space lattice and the interest of the solutions adopted in its final configuration, in order to contrast its architectural quality. The building of the Central Lechera CLESA, despite it is a well known building, is in a superficial way. It appears in several publications, often as part of an extensive account of the work of its author. The monograph published in 2007 by the Foundation Alejandro de la Sota, whose edition is run by Teresa Couceiro, is the only specific publication about it. After a brief introduction, in which Sota's intense dedication to this work stands out, it brings together a collection of drawings, photographs and sketches, along with the project report. It offers a fragmented view, which enable to glimpse the interest of this work, but not helps to understand it in full. It is important to highlight the publication of CLESA in the book edited by Pronaos (1989), which includes a selection made by the author of plants, elevations and sections corresponding to the project built, next to photographs of the finished construction, in addition to a brief text as concise as enlightening. About Alejandro de la Sota have been written doctoral thesis, numerous articles, several books as well as held exhibitions collecting his global work, which have been reflected in this document in the resulting specific bibliographies. It should be noted the exhibition in COAM headquarters in 2014, on the occasion of its Centennial, where the building CLESA has a leading role, in a certain way, because of its risk of disappearance.4 The thesis is structured in four chapters: description, analysis, synthesis, and conclusions. The first chapter provides the description of the building object of this thesis. Includes an introduction that puts us in the historic, economic, cultural and social context in which it is developed the commission, the project and construction of the dairy building. The description itself of the industrial complex, starts with the order of the dairy to the author of the project, moves through the draft, the visa project and reaches the completion of the work. The visa project, CLESA's finished and published work, as well as the future of the building is compared. The second part corresponds to the analysis, first from the program as a general approach, studying the circulations, geometric, spatial, skeletal, geographical relations - bit by bit - comprising the manufacturing plant ("la central"). The structure, explanatory introduction of the solutions adopted by Alejandro de la Sota; analysis of the skeletal system of the building by parts, geometric and spatial operations. Construction, analysis of the realization of the work, constructive systems used in the building enclosures, roofs, skylights; from the general to the particular and studying the systems. Finally through small scale unique elements that are part of complex systems, such as multiple stairs, railings, carpentry, viewpoints are summarized. It is recapitulated in a synthesis which forms a whole with the sum of the parts, using linking resources that belongs to the additive architecture, such as the module, tours and visual links The final chapter of Conclusions contrast the hypothesis of the thesis regarding the maximum space architecture with minimal resources. It also includes various reflections as the dialectic between the fragmented space and the single space; expansive or inclusive growth; unique image and representation; domestic and industrial scale; structural abandonment or limitation of means. Perhaps the greatest interest of this thesis lies in the axonometric drawings made of the CLESA complex, which ideally have allowed to restore and rebuild the factory back to the beginning of its activity. Considering its potential full or partial disappearance, such recovery becomes relevant as a testimonial evidence of what it was.

Dynamic blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI was applied at 7 T in the rat olfactory bulb (OB) with pulsed delivery of iso-amyl acetate (IAA) and limonene. Acquisition times for single-slice and whole OB data were 8 and 32 s, respectively, with spatial resolution of 220 × 220 × 250 μm. On an intrasubject basis, short IAA exposures of 0.6 min separated by 3.5-min intervals induced reproducible spatial activity patterns (SAPs) in the olfactory nerve layer, glomerular layer, and external plexiform layer. During long exposures (≈10 min), the initially dominant dorsal SAPs declined in intensity and area, whereas in some OB regions, the initially weak ventral/lateral SAPs increased first and then decreased. The SAPs of different concentrations were topologically similar, which implies that whereas an odor at various concentrations activates the same subsets of receptor cells, different concentrations are assessed and discriminated by variable magnitudes of laminarspecific activations. IAA and limonene reproducibly activated different subsets of receptor cells with some overlaps. Whereas qualitative topographical agreement was observed with results from other methods, the current dynamic blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI results can provide quantitative SAPs of the entire OB.

The temporal and spatial expression patterns of three 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase genes were investigated in pollinated orchid (Phalaenopsis spp.) flowers. Pollination signals initiate a cascade of development events in multiple floral organs, including the induction of ethylene biosynthesis, which coordinates several postpollination developmental responses. The initiation and propagation of ethylene biosynthesis is regulated by the coordinated expression of three distinct ACC synthase genes in orchid flowers. One ACC synthase gene (Phal-ACS1) is regulated by ethylene and participates in amplification and interorgan transmission of the pollination signal, as we have previously described in a related orchid genus. Two additional ACC synthase genes (Phal-ACS2 and Phal-ACS3) are expressed primarily in the stigma and ovary of pollinated orchid flowers. Phal-ACS2 mRNA accumulated in the stigma within 1 h after pollination, whereas Phal-ACS1 mRNA was not detected until 6 h after pollination. Similar to the expression of Phal-ACS2, the Phal-ACS3 gene was expressed within 2 h after pollination in the ovary. Exogenous application of auxin, but not ACC, mimicked pollination by stimulating a rapid increase in ACC synthase activity in the stigma and ovary and inducing Phal-ACS2 and Phal-ACS3 mRNA accumulation in the stigma and ovary, respectively. These results provide the basis for an expanded model of interorgan regulation of three ACC synthase genes that respond to both primary (Phal-ACS2 and Phal-ACS3) and secondary (Phal-ACS1) pollination signals.

We asked 12 patients with left visual neglect to bisect the gap between two cylinders or to reach rapidly between them to a more distal target zone. Both tasks demanded a motor response but these responses were quite different in nature. The bisection response was a communicative act whereby the patient indicated the perceived midpoint. The reaching task carried no imperative to bisect the gap, only to maintain a safe distance from either cylinder while steering to the target zone. Optimal performance on either task could only be achieved by reference to the location of both cylinders. Our analysis focused upon the relative influence of the left and right cylinders on the lateral location of the response. In the bisection task, all neglect patients showed qualitatively the same asymmetry, with the left cylinder exerting less influence than the right. In the reaching task, the neglect group behaved like normal subjects, being influenced approximately equally by the two cylinders. This was true for all bar two of the patients, who showed clear neglect in both tasks. We conclude that the visuomotor processing underlying obstacle avoidance during reaching is preserved in most patients with left visual neglect. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Plasma membrane compartmentalization imposes lateral segregation on membrane proteins that is important for regulating signal transduction. We use computational modeling of immunogold spatial point patterns on intact plasma membrane sheets to test different models of inner plasma membrane organization. We find compartmentalization at the nanoscale level but show that a classical raft model of preexisting stable domains into which lipid raft proteins partition is incompatible with the spatial point patterns generated by the immunogold labeling of a palmitoylated raft marker protein. Rather, approximate to 30% of the raft protein exists in cholesterol-dependent nanoclusters, with approximate to 70% distributed as monomers. The cluster/monomer ratio (number of proteins in clusters/number of proteins outside clusters) is independent of expression level. H-rasG12V and K-rasG12V proteins also operate in nanoclusters with fixed cluster/monomer ratios that are independent of expression level. Detailed calibration of the immunogold imaging protocol suggests that radii of raft and RasG12V protein nanoclusters may be as small as 11 and 6 nm, respectively, and shows that the nanoclusters contain small numbers (6.0-7.7) of proteins. Raft nanoclusters do not form if the actin cytoskeleton is disassembled. The formation of K-rasG12V but not H-rasG12V nanoclusters also is actin-dependent. K-rasG12V but not H-rasG12V signaling is abrogated by actin cytoskeleton disassembly, which shows that nanoclustering is critical for Ras function. These findings argue against stable preexisting domains on the inner plasma membrane in favor of dynamic actively regulated nanoclusters similar to those proposed for the outer plasma membrane. RasG12V nanoclusters may facilitate the assembly of essential signal transduction complexes.

Mangrove forest structure and sediment characteristics were examined in the extensive mangroves of Bocas del Toro, Republic of Panama. Forest structure was characterized to determine if spatial vegetation patterns were repeated over the Bocas del Toro landscape. Using a series of permanent plots and transects we found that the forests of Bocas del Toro were dominated by Rhizophora maugle with very few individuals of Avicennia germinans and Laguncularia racemosa. Despite this low species diversity, there was large variation in forest structure and in edaphic conditions (salinity, concentration of available phosphorus, Eh and sulphide concentration). Aboveground biomass varied 20-fold, from 6.8 Mg ha(-1) in dwarf forests to 194.3 Mg ha(-1) in the forests fringing the land. But variation in forest structure was predictable across the intertidal zone. There was a strong tree height gradient from seaward fringe (mean tree height 3.9 m), decreasing in stature in the interior dwarf forests (mean tree height 0.7 m), and increasing in stature in forests adjacent to the terrestrial forest (mean tree height 4.1 m). The predictable variation in forest structure emerges due to the complex interactions among edaphic and plant factors. Identifying predictable patterns in forest structure will aid in scaling up the ecosystem services provided by mangrove forests in coastal landscapes.

Based on the observation of more than 10 000 leaves of plane trees, four populations of Corythucha ciliata (Say, 1832) (Heteroptera: Tingidae) are investigated. After having introduced some parameters derived from the data, we draw spatial-temporal patterns and describe the seasonal population dynamics of Corythucha ciliata. Amongst others, the temporal change of the density of population, the state plane of larvae–adults, the inclination to accumulate, and the intraspecific competition are examined. Population and biomass dynamics is characterized for populations with and without limited nutrient source in case of different weather circumstances and effects.

In this paper, I explore socio-spatial segregation from a particular perspective, which may probably be considered a novelty in the investigation of spatial social patterns, as it focuses on questions such as: What kind of distinction occurs between socio-spatial patterns designated by statistical data and the cognitive representations of those patterns in people's minds? and What explains these diff erences, and what kind of impact can they generate?

The coastal area of the city of Natal due to its location and natural potentialities has been an area where we have experienced big changes in its environment, at the expense of several forms of use and human occupation. On the coast of Via Costeira beach the process of use and land occupation was structured at the end of 1970s and early 1980s, as a result of the government policy which has developmental essence, based on the settlement of plenty big enterprises by the Parque das Dunas/Via Costeira Project. This project was created to install in Natal, capital of the state, infrastructure equipment on this stretch of coastline consisted of dune fields and many parts of ecosystems which have high natural relevance and fragility that used to present a semi-isolation in the urban city, for the development of tourist activities, which is considered as a viable economic solution capable of setting right serious socioeconomic problems that had persisted there. According to what was said so far, this study aimed to analyze the forms of use and land occupation besides the change of the landscape along the Via Costeira coast in the city of Natal/RN. These changes often take place without considering the complexity and fragility of natural ecosystems involved. The geoenvironmental study was based on the geosystemic theory, thus It was possible to analyze the human interventions in the superficial aspects of landscapes holistically. The practical procedures were contemplated with literature searches, followed by field work where were fulfilled the recognition and general characterization of the area in order to investigate and analyze the main types of land occupation and its use that have taken place there since big buildings began to come out, being supported by the legislation whose laws are about protection and conservation of coastal natural resources. The research also includes the identification and evaluation of the main types of negative impacts caused due to different forms of use that induce environmental and social conflicts nearby this shore. Thus, It was carried out a spatial and multitemporal analysis from orthophotos, aerial photographs and others taken during the field work besides satellite images too. The information which is taken out from these instruments was used to draw maps related to land occupation, spatial impacts and other thematic maps. We worked on a hypothesis that the implementation of mega enterprises on Via Costeira and many different forms of intensified use by human actions, has not considered the natural aspects and restrictions of use in this area, these ones would be the main factors that brought on the suppression and degradation in this environment and consequently the transformation of the natural landscape.
