A series of monodisperse oligo(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene-co-bithiophene)s (OFbTs) with molecular lengths of up to 19.5 nm and molecular weights up to 7025 g mol(-1) has been synthesized by a divergent/convergent approach involving Stille coupling reactions. Stille coupling is quite efficient in preparing this class of oligomers, and even the molecule with nine fluorene units and eight bithiophene units (F9Th16) can be synthesized in a yield as high as 70%. Because of easy functionalization of the thiophene ring at its alpha position, no additional protecting group allowing activation for further reaction is necessary. However, the synthetic routes must be optimized to eliminate contamination of the targeting compounds with the homocoupling product of the organotin reagents. Synthesis of the longest oligomer F13Th24 in a relative large quantity is limited by its low yield due to the pronounced ligand-exchange side reactions of the starting materials and reaction intermediates. All oligomers longer than F4Th6 are nematic mesomorphs and exhibit enhanced glass transition temperature and clearing point with increasing molecular length, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy.

An efficient enantioselective catalyst of 5 wt.% Ru/-gamma-Al2O3 modified with R,R-1,2-diphenylethylene-diamine ((R,R)-DPEN) for the hydrogenation of a non-activated aromatic ketone of acetophenone has been investigated, a relatively high enantiomeric excess (ee) of 60.5% was obtained at both the conversion and selectivity larger than 99%, it was about three times higher than the ee values reported up to now for acetophenone hydrogenation with the supported transition metal catalysts modified by chiral reagents. The influences of some reaction parameters such as phosphine ligand, substrate/catalyst/modifier molar ratios, base, solvent, pressure and reaction temperature have been discussed. The chiral modifier of (R,R)-DPEN was very important in controlling the enantioselectivity through adsorption competing with other substrates on the surface of active metal species. The phosphine ligand and base were also important and indispensable in the present reaction.

Extraction and separation of yttrium from the rare earths in chloride medium using sec-octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as modifier, in kerosene has been investigated. The separation coefficients, beta, were obtained and the extraction selectivity has been enhanced when compared with that of naphthenic acid. The experimental results indicated that CA-12-TBP system could be employed to separate yttrium, from rare earths. Fractional extraction (15 stages for extraction and 10 stages for scrubbing) was studied, the raffinate of the first stage was abundant in purity yttrium of 99.5%, with a yield of > 95%, percentage of yttrium in the mixture rare earths was less than 5% in the loaded organic phase of the 25th stage and loaded capability was about 0.2 mol/L.

For the first time, a novel prefractionation method used in proteomic analysis was developed, which is performed by a novel aqueous two-phase system (NATPS) composed of n-butanol, (NH4)(2)SO4, and water. It can separate proteomic proteins into multigroups by one-step extraction. The phase-separation conditions of n-butanol solutions were studied in the presence of commonly used inorganic salts. The NATPS was subsequently developed. Using human serum albumin, zein, and gamma-globulin as model proteins, the separation effectiveness of the NATPS for protein was studied under affection factors, i.e., pH, n-butanol volume, protein, or salt concentration. The model and actual protein samples were separated by the NATPS and then directly used for gel electrophoresis without separating the target proteins from phase-forming reagents. It revealed that the NATPS could separate proteomic proteins into multigroups by one-step extraction. The NATPS has the advantages of rapidity, simplicity, low cost, biocompability, and high efficiency. It need not separate target proteins from the phase-forming reagents. The NATPS has great significance in separation and extraction of proteomic proteins, as well as in methodology.

The carbon nanotubes-chitosan (CNTs-CS) composite provides a suitable biosensing matrix due to its good conductivity, high stability, and good biocompatibility. Enzymes can be firmly incorporated into the matrix without the aid of other cross-linking reagents. The composite is easy to form insoluble film in solution above pH 6.3. Based on this, a facilely fabricated amperometric biosensor by entrapping laccase into the CNTs-CS composite film has been developed. At pH 6.0, the fungi laccase incorporated into the composite film remains better catalytic activity than that dissolved in solution. The system is in favor of the accessibility of substrate to the active site of laccase, thus the affinity to substrates is improved greatly, such as 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), catechol, and 0, with K. values of 19.86 mu M, 9.43 mu M, and 3.22 mM, respectively. The major advantages of the as-prepared biosensor are: detecting different substrates (ABTS, catechol, and 02), possessing high affinity and sensitivity, durable long-term stability, and facile preparation procedure. On the other hand, the system can be applied in fabrication of biofuel cells as the cathodic catalysts based on its good electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction.

A surface plasmon resonance biosensor has been used to determine antibody activity in serum. As a model system, the interaction of mouse IgG and sheep anti-mouse IgG polyclonal antibody was investigated in real time. The factors, including pH value, ionic strength, protein concentration, influencing electrostatic adsorption of mouse IgG protein onto carboxylated dextran-coated sensor chip surface, were studied. The procedures of mouse IgG protein immobilization and immune reaction were monitored in real time. The regeneration effect using the different elution reagents was also investigated. The same mouse IgG immobilized surface can be used for 100 cycles of binding and elution with only 0.38% loss per regeneration in reactivity. The results show that the surface plasmon resonance biosensor is a rapid, simple, sensitive, accurate and reliable detection technique for real-time immunoassay of antibody activity. The assay allows antibodies to be detected and studied in their native form without any purification. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A capillary electrophoresis-amperometric detection system was developed for the determination of propranolol (PRO) at a 33 mu m carbon fiber microdisk electrode (CFE). The cyclic voltammogram, the hydrodynamic voltammograms and the effect of pH were studied. Under the optimum conditions: separation Voltage 15 kV; injection 3 s at 15 kV; 10 mM pH 7.5 phosphate buffer, 1.15 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) detection potential, the detection limit (LOD) for PRO was 0.05 mu M (S/N = 3). The response for PRO was linear over two orders of magnitude with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.994. The feasibility of this method was demonstrated by the detection of PRO in urine sample.

This overview presents the recent progress in the area of endohedral metallofullerenes in the past several years. The important results have been summarized as follows: (1) Many metals including Group 3 metals, most of the lanthanide series elements, and Group 2 metals have been encapsulated into a fullerene cage to form mono-, di-, and trimetallofullerenes by using the arc-evaporation technique. (2) Some endohedral metallofullerenes such as Group 3 metals, most of the lanthanide series elements, Group 2 metals, and some of their isomers have been successfully isolated and purified by a two-step or several-step HPLC technique. By using high-temperature and high-pressure extraction with pyridine, Ln@C-80, Ln@C-82, and Ln2@C-80 for most rare-earth metals have been selectively extracted in high yield (about 1% of the saw soot) from fullerenes and other size metallofullerenes. (3) The endohedral nature of metallofullerenes such as Y@C-82, Sc2@C-84, and Sc@C-82 has been finally confirmed by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The symmetries and the structures of metallofullerenes such as Ca@C-82(III), La-2@C-80(I-h), Sc-2@C-84(D-2d), and Sc-2@C-84(C-s) have been confirmed by NMR measurements. (Lb) The information on the electronic structures and properties of endohedral metallofullerenes has been obtained by various spectrometric means Such as EPR, W-vis-MR, XPS, CV. It is generally accepted that three-electron transfer is favorable when M = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu but Sc, Eu, Sm, Yb, Tm, Ca, Sr, Ba prefer to donate two electrons to the fullerene cages. (5) Several chemical reactions of endohedral metallofullerenes have been reported in which reagents are disilacyclopropane, digermacyclopropane, diphenyldiazomethane, and trifluoroacetic acid. (6) Mass spectrometry provided the crucial evidence that led to the discovery of metallofullerenes in 1985 and has always played a key role in their identification and characterization, Ion-mobility measurements of gas-phase ions have obtained the information of structures and the formation mechanism of endohedral metallofullerenes. till Theoretical calculations on the endohedral metallofullerenes have made an important contribution to the studies on the symmetry of the cage, the position of metal atom(s) inside the cage, the number of electronic transfer between metal atom(s) and fullerene cage, etc. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Gas-phase hydrogen-deuterium (H/D) exchange reactions involving four isomeric cyclopropane derivatives were investigated under chemical ionization (CI) conditions, using D2O and CD3OD as reagent gases. There are abundant ions at [M + 1](+), [M + 2](+) and [M + 3](+) in the D2O and CD3OD positive-ion CI mass spectra of the two isomer pairs 1, 2 and 3, 4, Their CI mass spectra are identical with each pair, and so are the collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectra of ions [M + 1](+), [M + 2](+) and [M + 3](+) of each of the two isomer pairs. The CID spectra of [M + 1](+) ions indicate that they have common D/H exchange reactions within each pair, which take place between molecular ions and deuterium-labeling reagents to form the [M - H + D](+) ions. Those of their [M + 2](+) ions show that they have common D/H exchange reactions within each pair, which form the [M-d1 + H](+) ions. Those of their [M + 3](+) ions show that they have common D/H exchange reactions within each pair, which take place between the [M-d1] and deuterium-labeling reagents to produce [Md-2 + H](+) for the isomer pair 1, 2 and [M-d1 + D](+) for the Isomer pair 3, 4. The number and position, and active order of the active hydrogen atoms of the isomer pairs 1, 2 and 3, 4 were determined. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(ii) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] immobilized in poly(p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)-silica-Triton X-100 composite films was investigated. The cooperative action of PSS, sol-gel and Triton X-100 attached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the electrode strongly, and the presence of Triton X-100 prevented drying fractures of the sol-gel films during gelation and even on repeated wet-dry cycles. The modified electrode was used for the ECL detection of oxalate, tripropylamine (TPA) and NADH in a flow injection analysis (FIA) system with a newly designed flow cell. The detection scheme exhibited good stability, short response time and high sensitivity. Detection limits were 0.1, 0.1 and 0.5 mu mol L-1 for oxalate, TPA and NADH, respectively, and the linear concentration range extended from 0.001 to 1 mmol L-1 for the three analytes. Applications of the flow cell in ECL and electrochemical detection, as well as the immobilization of reagents based on the cooperative action, are suggested.

Due to the difference in reactivity of enantiomers with chiral reagents, it was found that in the Fast Atom Bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of enantiomer mixtures of R-alpha-phenylethylamine and S-alpha-phenylethylamine with a chiral reagent S-phosphorsaeure-(1,1'-bi-naphthyl-2,2'-diylester) (BNP acid), the relative abundance of the characteristic ion is linearly related to the composition of the mixture. We have, therefore, proposed a possible method for the determination of the optical purity of enantiomers by mass spectrometry.

In chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) gas phase C-60(+) or C-60 can react with fragment ions from three chloromethane and four multichloroethane molecular ions via ion-molecule reactions. A dozen of gas-phase adduct ions of C-60 are observed, and most of them contain chlorine atoms. The results of the comparison and analysis show that the relative intensities of adductions are not directly proportional to the corresponding fragment ions in the MS of reagents, which implies that some fragment ions containing radicals are more reactive with C-60(+) or C-60. This indicates that the alkene-like C-60(+) or C-60 can act as a radical sponge in addition reactions.

The solvent extraction of Sc(III), Zr(IV), Th(IV), Fe(III) and Lu(III) with Cyanex 302 (bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid) and Cyanex 301 ( bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid) in n-hexane from acidic aqueous solutions has been investigated systematically. The effect of equilibrium aqueous acidity on the extraction with these reagents was studied. The separation of Th(IV), Fe(III) and Lu(III) from Sc(III), or the separation of other metals from Lu(III) with Cyanex 302, can be achieved by controlling the aqueous acidity. However, Cyanex 301 exhibited a poor selectivity for the above metals, except for Lu(III). The extraction of these metals with Cyanex 272, Cyanex 302 and Cyanex 301 has been compared. The stripping percentages of Sc(III) for Cyanex 302 and Cyanex 301 in a single stage are near 78% and 75% with 3.5 mol/L and 5.8 mol/L sulphuric acid solutions, respectively. The effects of extractant concentration and temperature on the extraction of Sc(III) were investigated. The stoichiometry of the extraction of Sc(III) with Cyanex 302 was determined. The role of different components of Cyanex 302 in the extraction of Sc(III) was discussed.
