A molecule having a ketone group between two thiophene groups was synthesized. Presence of alternating electron donating and accepting moieties gives this material a donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) architecture. PolyDAD was synthesized from DAD monomer by oxidative polymerization. Device quality films of polyDAD were fabricated using pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) data of both as synthesized and film indicate the material does not degrade during ablation. Optical band gap was determined to be about 1.45 eV. Four orders of magnitude increase in conductivity was observed from as synthesized to pulsed laser deposition (PLD) fabricated film of polyDAD. Annealing of polyDAD films increase conductivity, indicating better ordering of the molecules upon heating. Rectifying devices were fabricated from polyDAD, and preliminary results are discussed.

Tin sulfide (SnS) is a material of interest for use as an absorber in low cost solar cells. Single crystals of SnS were grown by the physical vapor deposition technique. The grown crystals were characterized to evaluate the composition, structure, morphology, electrical and optical properties using appropriate techniques. The composition analysis indicated that the crystals were nearly stoichiometric with Sn-to-S atomic percent ratio of 1.02. Study of their morphology revealed the layered type growth mechanism with low surface roughness. The grown crystals had orthorhombic structure with (0 4 0) orientation. They exhibited an indirect optical band gap of 1.06 eV and direct band gap of 1.21 eV with high absorption coefficient (up to 10(3) cm(-1)) above the fundamental absorption edge. The grown crystals were of p-type with an electrical resistivity of 120 Omega cm and carrier concentration 1.52 x 10(15) cm(-3). Analysis of optical absorption and diffuse reflectance spectra showed the presence of a wide absorption band in the wavelength range 300-1200 nm, which closely matches with a significant part of solar radiation spectrum. The obtained results were discussed to assess the suitability of the SnS crystal for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Conjugated polymers are intensively pursued as candidate materials for emission and detection devices with the optical range of interest determined by the chemical structure. On the other hand the optical range for emission and detection can also be tuned by size selection in semiconductor nanoclusters. The mechanisms for charge generation and separation upon optical excitation, and light emission are different for these systems. Hybrid systems based on these different class of materials reveal interesting electronic and optical properties and add further insight into the individual characteristics of the different components. Multilayer structures and blends of these materials on different substrates were prepared for absorption, photocurrent (Iph), photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminscence (EL) studies. Polymers chosen were derivatives of polythiophene (PT) and polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) along with nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide of average size 4.4 nm (CdS-44). The photocurrent spectral response in these systems followed the absorption response around the band edges for each of the components and revealed additional features, which depended on bias voltage, thickness of the layers and interfacial effects. The current-voltage curves showed multi-component features with emission varying for different regimes of voltage. The emission spectral response revealed additive features and is discussed in terms of excitonic mechanisms.

This work presents an electrochemical technique for the polymerization and copolymerization of thiophene derivatives like 7,9-dithiophene-2yl-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthalene-8-one and 3-hexylthiophene. The structural characterization of chemically synthesized monomers and electro-chemically synthesized polymers was carried out by nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal characterizations indicate that copolymer has increased thermal stability than that of homopolymer. Morphological studies of the polymerized films carried out by scanning electron microscopy shows network structure of copolymer. Optical properties of the homopolymers and copolymer were studied by UV-visible spectrometer and it was observed that band gap of copolymer is less than the homopolymers. HOMO and LUMO levels, band gap values of the respective polymers were also calculated from the cyclic voltammetry technique with various scan rates. By the peak current obtained from various scan rates shows that all polymerization reactions are diffusion controlled process. Charge transfer resistances of polymers were determined using Nyquist plots. Conductivity of synthesized polymers shows higher conductivity for copolymer than homopolymers. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The composition, structural, electrical, and optical properties of as-grown and heat treated tin-mono-sulfide (SnS) ultra-thin films have been studied. The ultra-thin SnS films were prepared on glass substrates by thermal resistive evaporation technique. All the SnS films contained nanocrystallites and exhibited p-type conductivity with a low Hall-mobility, <50 cm(2)/Vs. All these films are highly tin rich in nature and exhibited orthorhombic crystal structure. As compared to other films, the SnS films annealed at 300 degrees C showed a low electrical resistivity of similar to 36 Omega cm with an optical band gap of similar to 1.98 eV. The observed electrical and optical properties of all the films are discussed based on their composition and structural parameters. These nanocrystalline ultra-thin SnS films could be expected as a buffer layer for the development of tandem solar cell devices due to their low-resistivity and high absorbability with an optimum band gap. Amorphous thin film Ge15Te85-xSnx (1 <= x <= 5) and Ge17Te83-xSnx (1 <= x <= 4) switching devices have been deposited in sandwich geometry using a flash evaporation technique, with aluminum as the top and bottom electrodes. Electrical switching studies indicate that these films exhibit memory type electrical switching behavior. The switching fields for both the series of samples have been found to decrease with increase in Sn concentration, which confirms that the metallicity effect on switching fields/voltages, commonly seen in bulk glassy chalcogenides, is valid in amorphous chalcogenide thin films also. In addition, there is no manifestation of rigidity percolation in the composition dependence of switching fields of Ge15Te85-xSnx and Ge17Te83-xSnx amorphous thin film samples. The observed composition dependence of switching fields of amorphous Ge15Te85-xSnx and Ge17Te83-xSnx thin films has been understood on the basis of Chemically Ordered Network model. The optical band gap for these samples, calculated from the absorption spectra, has been found to exhibit a decreasing trend with increasing Sn concentration, which is consistent with the composition dependence of switching fields.

DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique was employed for deposition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) films. The films were formed on Corning glass and p-Si (100) substrates by sputtering of titanium target in an oxygen partial pressure of 6x10-2 Pa and at different substrate temperatures in the range 303 673 K. The films formed at 303 K were X-ray amorphous whereas those deposited at substrate temperatures?=?473 K were transformed into polycrystalline nature with anatase phase of TiO2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of characteristic bonding configuration of TiO2. The surface morphology of the films was significantly influenced by the substrate temperature. MOS capacitor with Al/TiO2/p-Si sandwich structure was fabricated and performed currentvoltage and capacitancevoltage characteristics. At an applied gate voltage of 1.5 V, the leakage current density of the device decreased from 1.8?x?10-6 to 5.4?x?10-8 A/cm2 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. The electrical conduction in the MOS structure was more predominant with Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim conduction. The dielectric constant (at 1 MHz) of the films increased from 6 to 20 with increase of substrate temperature. The optical band gap of the films increased from 3.50 to 3.56 eV and refractive index from 2.20 to 2.37 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. The design and analysis of an optical read-out scheme based on a grated waveguide (GWG) resonator for interrogating microcantilever sensor arrays is presented. The optical system consisting of a micro cantilever monolithically integrated in proximity to a grated waveguide (GWG), is realized in silicon optical bench platform. The mathematical analysis of the optical system is performed using a Fabry-Perot interferometer model with a lossy cavity formed between the cantilever and the GWG and an analytical expression is derived for the optical power transmission as a function of the cantilever deflection which corresponds to cavity width variation. The intensity transmission of the optical system for different cantilever deflections estimated using the analytical expression captures the essential features exhibited by a FDTD numerical model.

Combining the electronic properties of graphene(1,2) and molybdenum disulphide (MoS2)(3-6) in hybrid heterostructures offers the possibility to create devices with various functionalities. Electronic logic and memory devices have already been constructed from graphene-MoS2 hybrids(7,8), but they do not make use of the photosensitivity of MoS2, which arises from its optical-range bandgap(9). Here, we demonstrate that graphene-on-MoS2 binary heterostructures display remarkable dual optoelectronic functionality, including highly sensitive photodetection and gate-tunable persistent photoconductivity. The responsivity of the hybrids was found to be nearly 1 x 10(10) A W-1 at 130 K and 5 x 10(8) A W-1 at room temperature, making them the most sensitive graphene-based photodetectors. When subjected to time-dependent photoillumination, the hybrids could also function as a rewritable optoelectronic switch or memory, where the persistent state shows almost no relaxation or decay within experimental timescales, indicating near-perfect charge retention. These effects can be quantitatively explained by gate-tunable charge exchange between the graphene and MoS2 layers, and may lead to new graphene-based optoelectronic devices that are naturally scalable for large-area applications at room temperature.

Among the armoury of photovoltaic materials, thin film heterojunction photovoltaics continue to be a promising candidate for solar energy conversion delivering a vast scope in terms of device design and fabrication. Their production does not require expensive semiconductor substrates and high temperature device processing, which allows reduced cost per unit area while maintaining reasonable efficiency. In this regard, superstrate CdTe/CdS solar cells are extensively investigated because of their suitable bandgap alignments, cost effective methods of production at large scales and stability against proton/electron irradiation. The conversion efficiencies in the range of 6-20% are achieved by structuring the device by varying the absorber/window layer thickness, junction activation/annealing steps, with more suitable front/back contacts, preparation techniques, doping with foreign ions, etc. This review focuses on fundamental and critical aspects like: (a) choice of CdS window layer and CdTe absorber layer; (b) drawbacks associated with the device including environmental problems, optical absorption losses and back contact barriers; (c) structural dynamics at CdS-CdTe interface; (d) influence of junction activation process by CdCl2 or HCF2Cl treatment; (e) interface and grain boundary passivation effects; (f) device degradation due to impurity diffusion and stress; (g) fabrication with suitable front and back contacts; (h) chemical processes occurring at various interfaces; (i) strategies and modifications developed to improve their efficiency. The complexity involved in understanding the multiple aspects of tuning the solar cell efficiency is reviewed in detail by considering the individual contribution from each component of the device. It is expected that this review article will enrich the materials aspects of CdTe/CdS devices for solar energy conversion and stimulate further innovative research interest on this intriguing topic.

We report the self catalytic growth of Sn-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowires (NWs) over a large area glass and silicon substrates by electron beam evaporation method at low substrate temperatures of 250-400 degrees C. The ITO NWs growth was carried out without using an additional reactive oxygen gas and a metal catalyst particle. Ultrafine diameter (similar to 10-15 nm) and micron long ITO NWs growth was observed in a temperature window of 300-400 degrees C. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed single crystalline nature of the NWs and energy dispersive spectroscopy studies on the NWs confirmed that the NWs growth proceeds via self catalytic vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism. ITO nanowire films grown on glass substrates at a substrate temperature of 300-400 degrees C have shown similar to 2-6% reflection and similar to 70-85% transmission in the visible region. Effect of deposition parameters was systematically investigated. The large area growth of ITO nanowire films would find potential applications in the optoelectronic devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The contact behavior of tin mono sulfide (SnS) nanocrystalline thin films with zinc (Zn) and silver (Ag) contacts was studied. SnS films have been deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation technique at a growth temperature of 300 degrees C. The as-grown SnS films composed of vertically aligned nanocrystallites with a preferential orientation along the < 010 > direction. SnS films exhibited excellent chemical stoichiometry and direct optical band gap of 1.96 eV. These films also exhibited excellent Ohmic characteristics and low electrical resistivity with Zn contacts. The observed electrical resistivity of SnS films with Zn contacts is 22 times lower than that of the resistivity with Ag contacts. The interfacing analysis reveals the formation of conductive Zn-S layer between SnS and Zn as interfacial layer. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The impact of indium tin oxide (ITO) layers over vertically aligned zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) has been investigated to consider ITO nanolayers as transparent conducting oxide electrodes (TCOE) for hierarchical heteronanostructure solar cell devices that have ZnO nanostructures as branches. ZnO/ITO core/shell nanostructures were prepared in two- steps using vapor-liquid-solid and evaporation processes, and further the structures were annealed at various temperatures. Transmission electron microscopic studies show that the as-grown ZnO/ITO structures consist of an amorphous ITO shell on single crystalline ZnO cores, whereas the structures annealed above 300 degrees C consist of a single crystalline ITO shell. ITO layer deposited ZnO NRs exhibit a small red-shift in ZnO near-band-edge emission as well as optical band gap. The electrical measurements carried out on single ZnO/ITO core/shell NR under dark and UV light showed excellent thermionic transport properties. From these investigations it is emphasized that ITO nanolayers could be used as TCO electrodes for prototype ZnO based hierarchical solar cell devices.

Recently, a lot of interest has been centred on the optical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which has a similar lattice structure to graphene. Interestingly, h-BN has a wide bandgap and is biocompatible, so it has potential applications in multiphoton bioimaging, if it can exhibit large nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. However, extensive investigation into the NLO properties of h-BN have not been done so far. Here, NLO properties of 2D h-BN nanosheets (BNNS) are reported for the first time, using 1064-nm NIR laser radiation with a pulse duration of 10 ns using the Z-scan technique. The reverse saturable absorption occurs in aqueous colloidal solutions of BNNS with a very large two-photon absorption cross section (sigma(2PA)) of approximate to 57 x 10(-46) cm(4) s(-1) photon(-1). Also, by using UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, the temperature coefficient of the bandgap (dE(g)/dT) of BNNS is determined to be 5.9 meV K-1. Further defect-induced photoluminescence emission in the UV region is obtained in the 283-303 K temperature range, under excitations of different wavelengths. The present report of large sigma(2PA) combined with stability and biocompatibility could open up new possibilities for the application of BNNS as a potential optical material for multiphoton bioimaging and advanced photonic devices.
