The prevalence of antibodies against Equine Influenza Virus (EIV) was determined in 529 equines living on ranches in the municipality of Poconé, Pantanal area of Brazil, by means of the hemagglutination inhibition test, using subtype H3N8 as antigen. The distribution and possible association among positive animal and ranches were evaluated by the chi-square test, spatial autoregressive and multiple linear regression models. The prevalence of antibodies against EIV was estimated at 45.2% (95% CI 30.2 - 61.1%) with titers ranging from 20 to 1,280 HAU. Seropositive equines were found on 92.0% of the surveyed ranches. Equine from non-flooded ranches (66.5%) and negativity in equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) (61.7%) were associated with antibodies against EIV. No spatial correlation was found among the ranches, but the ones located in non-flooded areas were associated with antibodies against EIV. A negative correlation was found between the prevalence of antibodies against EIV and the presence of EIAV positive animals on the ranches. The high prevalence of antibodies against EIV detected in this study suggests that the virus is circulating among the animals, and this statistical analysis indicates that the movement and aggregation of animals are factors associated to the transmission of the virus in the region.

Anthelmintics used for intestinal helminthiasis treatment are generally effective; however, their effectiveness in tissue parasitosis (i.e. visceral toxocariasis) is moderate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitroactivity of lapachol, β-lapachone and phenazines in relation to the viability of Toxocara canis larvae. A concentration of 2 mg/mL (in duplicate) of the compounds was tested using microculture plates containing Toxocara canis larvae in an RPMI-1640 environment, incubated at 37 °C in 5% CO2 tension for 48 hours. In the 2 mg/mL concentration, four phenazines, lapachol and three of its derivatives presented a larvicide/larvistatic activity of 100%. Then, the minimum larvicide/larvistatic concentration (MLC) test was conducted. The compounds that presented the best results were nor-lapachol (MLC, 1 mg/mL), lapachol (MLC 0.5 mg/mL), β-lapachone, and β-C-allyl-lawsone (MLC, 0.25 mg/mL). The larvae exposed to the compounds, at best MLC with 100% in vitro activity larvicide, were inoculated into healthy BALB/c mice and were not capable of causing infection, confirming the larvicide potential in vitro of these compounds.

SUMMARY Regarding public health in Brazil, a new scenario emerged with the establishment of universal rotavirus (RV) vaccination programs. Herein, the data from the five years of surveillance (2007-2012) of G- and P-type RV strains isolated from individuals with acute gastroenteritis in Brazil are reported. A total of 6,196 fecal specimens were investigated by ELISA and RT-PCR. RVs were detected in 19.1% (1,181/6,196). The peak of RV incidence moved from June-August to September. RV was detected less frequently (19.5%) among children ≤ 5 years than in older children and adolescents (6-18 years) (40.6%). Genotype distribution showed a different profile for each year: G2P[4] strains were most prevalent during 2007-2010, G9P[8] in 2011, and G12P[8] in 2012. Mixed infections (G1+G2P[4], G2+G3P[4]+P[8], G2+G12P[8]), unusual combinations (G1P[4], G2P[6]), and rare strains (G3P[3]) were also identified throughout the study period. Widespread vaccination may alter the RV seasonal pattern. The finding of RV disease affecting older children and adolescents after vaccine implementation has been reported worldwide. G2P[4] emergence most likely follows a global trend seemingly unrelated to vaccination, and G12, apparently, is emerging in the Brazilian population. The rapidly changing RV genotype patterns detected during this study illustrate a dynamic population of co-circulating wildtype RVs in Brazil.

Os autores selecionaram 15 pacientes portadores de leishmaniose cutâneo- mucosa (LCM) forma grave, onde buscaram, através de entrevista psicológica, conhecer aspectos da vida de cada um, antes de contrair a doença, no decorrer e após o tratamento. Concomitantemente, realizaram 25 entrevistas com a comunidade onde residem os pacientes, com a intenção de avaliar as reações da mesma ao doente com leishmaniose. Constataram que entre os pacientes entrevistados: 14(93,3%) referiram algum tipo de modificação no decorrer da doença; 11(73,3%) perceberam-se marginalizados; 9(60%) sentiram-se afastados do convívio da sociedade; 10(66,6%) tiveram dificuldade de retomar ao trabalho. Na comunidade, 11(44%) associam o portador da LCM a indivíduos que apresentam deformações no corpo, 8(32%) têm receio de contrair a doença pelo caráter destrutivo das lesões, 24(96%) referiram que os pacientes têm problemas de relacionamento social.

The Conference on Enabling Teachers for Entrepreneurship Education (ENTENP2013) in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) will be held at the Guarda Polytechnic Institute (GPI) in Guarda on 7/8 June 2013. We expect delegates from all the Portuguese Higher Education Institutions and the EU Member States, as well as Pre-Accession Countries and countries participating in the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP). ENTENP 2013 addresses to all practitioners from the area of teacher education and entrepreneurship education, but also the early stage adopters of education in entrepreneurship. The conference is jointly organized by Guarda Polytechnic Institute with the collaboration of Castelo Branco Polytechnic Institute, Viana do Castelo Polytechnic Institute and Universidade Nova de Lisboa and shall be hosted by the European Commission and GPI. The purpose of the event is to discuss burning questions and exchange good practice examples in the field of enabling teachers for entrepreneurship education and looking at possible areas of development and cooperation.

Le XXe siècle fut marqué, à l’échelle européenne, par deux grandes guerres mondiales (1914-18 et 1939-45), par les guerres civiles, les gouvernements de dictature de gauche et de droite, l’indépendance d’anciennes colonies, les déplacements de populations, les extrémismes et les processus d’extermination. Il fut également marqué par de grands mouvements de liberté et de démocratie, par la valorisation de l’individu et de ses compétences, celle du bonheur, de la beauté, du bien-être, de la protection de l’environnement, ainsi que par les progrès techniques et scientifiques propres à l’époque. On peut même affirmer, nous semble-t-il, que la première moitié du XXe siècle fut marquée par les dictatures pour que l’apologie et la défense des minorités trouvent enfin leur concrétisation, comme s’il s’agissait d’expier certains événements passés. Toutefois, en période de crise économique, où les répercussions se font sentir à divers niveaux, ce sont les groupes minoritaires, dépourvus de pouvoir, qui se voient toujours contraints d’assumer le rôle de bouc émissaire, car ce sont les groupes les plus fragiles, les plus dépendants et les moins intégrés à la société. En outre, leurs différences les rendent plus visibles. En dépit des recommandations émises par le Conseil de l’Europe, datant des années 1960 et portant en premier lieu sur la scolarisation des enfants d’immigrants portugais et espagnols dans les pays d’accueil européens, il semble que le long chemin parcouru jusqu’à ce jour n’ait pas encore été suffisant pour modifier les opinions, les conceptions, les points de vue concernant ceux qui sont différents de nous et qui nous inspirent la crainte, voire la peur. Les enquêtes que nous avons menées dans les années 1990 dans des établissements scolaires publics au Portugal, situés dans des zones d’accueil de populations originaires des anciennes colonies portugaises et d’enfants portugais appartenant à l’unique groupe ethnique portugais – celui des Tsiganes –, ont pour la première fois, et de manière explicite, attiré l’attention sur l’existence d’une discrimination au sein même de l’école primaire, impliquant des enseignants, élèves, parents/personnels chargés d’éducation, personnels administratifs, jusqu’à la société civile elle-même. Les résultats de ces études, loin d’appartenir à une époque, semblent au contraire être confirmés par d’autres enquêtes entreprises par des étudiants de doctorat ou de master, sous notre direction. En d’autres termes, le problème demeure d’actualité, est bien réel, voire inquiétant, et mérite qu’on l’examine de manière adéquate, en prenant les mesures qui s’imposent, au sein d’une Europe caractérisée par la richesse de sa diversité et des valeurs qu’elle diffuse et met en avant, en faveur de l’égalité des chances des individus.
