The primary objective of this thesis is to assess how the backlink portfolio structure and off site Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) elements influence ranking of UK based online nursery shops. The growth of the internet use demanded significant effort from companies to optimize and increase their online presence in order to cope with the increasing online competition. The new e-Commerce technology - called Search Engine Optimisation - has been developed that helped increase website visibility of companies. The SEO process involves on site elements (i.e. changing the parameters of the company's website such as keywords, title tags and meta descriptions) and off site elements (link building and social media marketing activity). Link Building is based on several steps of marketing planning including keyword research and competitor analysis. The underlying goal of keyword research is to understand the targeted market through identifying relevant keyword queries that are used by targeted costumer group. In the analysis, three types (geographic, field and company’s strategy related) and seven sources of keywords has been identified and used as a base of analysis. Following the determination of the most popular keywords, allinanchor and allintitle search has been conducted and the first ten results of the searches have been collected to identify the companies with the most significant web presence among the nursery shops. Finally, Link Profiling has been performed where the essential goal was to understand to what extent other companies' link structure is different that the base company's backlinks. Significant difference has been found that distinguished the top three companies ranking in the allinanchor and allintitle search. The top three companies, „Mothercare”, „Mamas and Papas” and „Kiddicare” maintained significantly better metrics regarding domain and page authority on the main landing pages, the average number of outbound links for link portfolio metric and in number of backlinks. These companies also ranked among the highest in page authority distribution and followed external linking.

Työn tavoitteena on tutkia projektisuunnittelun ja projektijohtamisen perusteiden toteutu-mista projektityöskentelyssä julkishallinnon organisaatiossa. Tutkimuksen ydin on tunnistaa projektisuunnitelman, muutoshallinnan ja projektipäällikön osaamisen sekä johtamis-käyttäytymisen merkitys projektin onnistumisen näkökulmasta. Tutkimus käsittää projektihallinnan kokonaisuutena, jota toteutetaan suunnittelun, toimin-nan ja johtamisen vuoropuhelussa. Tutkimuksessa verrataan kirjallisuudesta esitettyä pro-jektisuunnittelun ja johtamisen teoriaa Liikenneviraston projektihallinnan ohjeistukseen, mallipohjiin ja kokemukseen projektipäällikön johtamiskäyttäytymisestä. Johtopäätöksinä esitetään Liikenneviraston projektiohjeistuksen kehittämiskohteet sekä Liikenneviraston projektijohtamisen kulttuurissa hyviksi johtajaominaisuuksiksi koetut projektipäällikön ominaisuudet. Keskeisenä havaintona tunnistetaan projektityöskentelyn kehämäinen luonne ja siitä aiheutuva jatkuvan suunnittelun, arvioinnin ja johtamisen tarve.

Kehitys tietotekniikan puolella on viime vuosina ollut huimaa. Tämä on näkynyt kaikkialla yhteiskunnassa, muun muassa digitelevision esiinmarssina. Myös ilmailussa, sekä siviili- että sotilasilmailussa, on ryhdytty kartoittamaan uuden tekniikan hyväksikäyttömahdollisuuksia. Tämän työn tarkoituksena on tarkastella, miten NATO:n käyttämää datalinkkijärjestelmää, Link-16 -järjestelmää, voitaisiin käyttää Suomen Puolustusvoimien yhteisoperaatioissa sekä ilmavoimien omissa operaatioissa. Yhteisoperaation datalinkkijärjestelmälle asettamia vaatimuksia on pyritty kartoittamaan sovelletun vaatimusmäärittelyn menetelmin. Näin ollen työssä on pureuduttu vähän myös yhteisoperaatioihin ja niiden perusteisiin. Link-16 - järjestelmän ominaisuuksia on verrattu vaatimusmäärittelyn tuottamiin vaatimuksiin, minkä kautta on saatu kuva järjestelmän käyttökelpoisuudesta. Työssä on pohdittu myös, millaisia ongelmia Link-16 -järjestelmän käyttöönotto Suomessa saattaisi aiheuttaa. Tuloksia tarkasteltaessa korostuu Link-16 -järjestelmän vaatima suunnittelu- ja hallinnointityö. Järjestelmän tarjoaman joustavan verkkosuunnittelun avulla voidaan luoda haluttuja verkkoja, mutta suunnittelussa pitää pyrkiä ottamaan huomioon kaikki mahdollisesti eteen tulevat tilanteet. Eri operaatioille pitää myös suunnitella eri viestiverkot. Ilmavoimien omille operaatioille saattaa muodostua ongelmaksi järjestelmän käyttömahdollisuusmoodeista johtuva varakoneen hankala käyttöönotto. Link-16 -järjestelmä käyttää samaa taajuuskaistaa kuin ilmailussa käytettävä Distance Measurement Equipment (DME) -järjestelmä. Tästä johtuen maailmalla on luotu tiettyjä sääntöjä, joiden puitteissa Link-16 -järjestelmien päätelaitteiden on toimittava, jotta ne eivät häiritsisi DME-laitteiden toimintaa. Kyseiset säännöt lisäävät entisestään Link-16 -käyttäjien hallinnollista työmäärää. Rajoituksista johtuen kaikkia operaatioita on suunniteltava ja johdettava tarkasti, jotta Link-16 -järjestelmälle asetetut EMC-rajoitukset eivät ylittyisi. Link- 16 -järjestelmän käyttö vaatii siis huomattavasti hallinnollista työtä. Suomen Ilmavoimat tutkii tällä hetkellä, minkälaisia organisatorisia muutoksia Link-16 -järjestelmän käyttöönotto ilmavoimille merkitsisi. Mikäli halutaan osallistua kansainvälisiin kriisinhallintaoperaatioihin yhdessä muiden NATO -maiden kanssa, Link-16 -järjestelmä on käytännössä pakollinen.

Com o objetivo de verificar os efeitos do ácido giberélico (GA) e do cloreto de clorocolina (CCC) sobre o crescimento e desenvolvimento inicial de Brachiaria plantaginea, instalou-se a presente pesquisa em local com alta infestação dessa espécie, utilizando-se dos seguintes tratamentos: CCC nas concentrações de 1000 e 2000 ppm, GA na de 50 e 100 ppm e uma testemunha sem aplicação dos fitoreguladores. Na época de aplicação dos produtos as plantas apresentavam, em média, sete folhas e idade em torno de 25 dias. Os parâmetros avaliados foram altura do dossel, altura média das plantas, número médio de perfilhos por planta, biomassa seca da parte aérea total e por indivíduo. Os resultados foram avaliados 22 dias após a aplicação, quando se verificou que a biomassa total das plantas não foi alterada significativamente pelos tratamentos. Não ocorreram efeitos de doses e nem de interações entre fitoreguladores com dose em quaisquer dos parâmetros avaliados. Não se verificaram efeitos do CCC nos dados obtidos e todas as alterações ocorridas foram devidas à aplicação do GA que aumentou, significativamente, a altura de dossel e dos indivíduos de Brachiaria plantaginea e reduziu o perfilhamento da planta daninha.

Global challenges, complexity and continuous uncertainty demand development of leadership approaches, employees and multi-organisation constellations. Current leadership theories do not sufficiently address the needs of complex business environments. First of all, before successful leadership models can be applied in practice, leadership needs to shift from the industrial age to the knowledge era. Many leadership models still view leadership solely through the perspective of linear process thinking. In addition, there is not enough knowledge or experience in applying these newer models in practice. Leadership theories continue to be based on the assumption that leaders possess or have access to all the relevant knowledge and capabilities to decide future directions without external advice. In many companies, however, the workforce consists of skilled professionals whose work and related interfaces are so challenging that the leaders cannot grasp all the linked viewpoints and cross-impacts alone. One of the main objectives of this study is to understand how to support participants in organisations and their stakeholders to, through practice-based innovation processes, confront various environments. Another aim is to find effective ways of recognising and reacting to diverse contexts, so companies and other stakeholders are better able to link to knowledge flows and shared value creation processes in advancing joint value to their customers. The main research question of this dissertation is, then, to seek understanding of how to enhance leadership in complex environments. The dissertation can, on the whole, be characterised as a qualitative multiple-case study. The research questions and objectives were investigated through six studies published in international scientific journals. The main methods applied were interviews, action research and a survey. The empirical focus was on Finnish companies, and the research questions were examined in various organisations at the top levels (leaders and managers) and bottom levels (employees) in the context of collaboration between organisations and cooperation between case companies and their client organisations. However, the emphasis of the analysis is the internal and external aspects of organisations, which are conducted in practice-based innovation processes. The results of this study suggest that the Cynefin framework, complexity leadership theory and transformational leadership represent theoretical models applicable to developing leadership through practice-based innovation. In and of themselves, they all support confronting contemporary challenges, but an implementable method for organisations may be constructed by assimilating them into practice-based innovation processes. Recognition of diverse environments, their various contexts and roles in the activities and collaboration of organisations and their interest groups is ever-more important to achieving better interaction in which a strategic or formal status may be bypassed. In innovation processes, it is not necessarily the leader who is in possession of the essential knowledge; thus, it is the role of leadership to offer methods and arenas where different actors may generate advances. Enabling and supporting continuous interaction and integrated knowledge flows is of crucial importance, to achieve emergence of innovations in the activities of organisations and various forms of collaboration. The main contribution of this dissertation relates to applying these new conceptual models in practice. Empirical evidence on the relevance of different leadership roles in practice-based innovation processes in Finnish companies is another valuable contribution. Finally, the dissertation sheds light on the significance of combining complexity science with leadership and innovation theories in research.

The purpose of this research was to provide a deeper insight into the consequences of electronic human resource management (e-HRM) for line managers. The consequences are viewed as used information system (IS) potentials pertaining to the moderate voluntaristic category of consequences. Due to the need to contextualize the research and draw on line managers’ personal experiences, a qualitative approach in a case study setting was selected. The empirical part of the research is loosely based on literature on HRM and e-HRM and it was conducted in an industrial private sector company. In this thesis, method triangulation was utilized, as nine semi-structured interviews, conducted in a European setting, created the main method for data collection and analysis. Other complementary data such as HRM documentation and statistics of e-HRM system usage were utilized as background information to help to put the results into context. E-HRM has partly been taken into use in the case study company. Line managers tend to use e-HRM when a particular task requires it, but they are not familiar with all the features and possibilities which e-HRM has to offer. The advantages of e-HRM are in line with the company’s goals. The advantages are e.g. an transparency of data, process consistency, and having an efficient and easy-to-use tool at one’s disposal. However, several unintended, even contradictory, and mainly negative outcomes can also be identified, such as over-complicated processes, in-security in use of the tool, and the lack of co-operation with HR professionals. The use of e-HRM and managers’ perceptions regarding e-HRM affect the way in which managers perceive the consequences of e-HRM on their work. Overall, the consequences of e-HRM are divergent, even contradictory. The managers who considered e-HRM mostly beneficial to their work found that e-HRM affects their work by providing information and increasing efficiency. Those managers who mostly perceived challenges in e-HRM did not think that e-HRM had affected their role or their work. Even though the perceptions regarding e-HRM and its consequences might reflect the strategies, the distribution of work, and the ways of working in all HRM in general and can’t be generalized as such, this research contributed to the field of e-HRM and it provides new perspectives to e-HRM in the case study organization and in the academic field in general.

O rendimento de grãos de milho é afetado pela interferência com as plantas daninhas, que pode variar em função da eficiência e da época de realização do método de controle utilizado no manejo da cultura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os efeitos da aplicação de herbicidas e de capinas em diferentes épocas sobre o controle de plantas daninhas e o rendimento de grãos na cultura do milho. O experimento foi instalado no sistema convencional de preparo do solo em Eldorado do Sul (RS), no ano agrícola 1997/98. A espécie de planta daninha predominante na área experimental foi Brachiaria plantaginea (BRAPL), em infestação média de 285 plantas por m². Os tratamentos foram constituídos pela aplicação isolada, seqüencial ou em mistura em tanque, em diferentes doses e épocas, dos herbicidas atrazine, atrazine + óleo vegetal, metolachlor e nicosulfuron. Todos os tratamentos com herbicidas foram correspondidos por tratamentos em que se utilizou capina manual com início na mesma época de aplicação dos herbicidas. O controle realizado em pré-emergência ou no início do desenvolvimento da cultura proporcionou maior rendimento de grãos, mesmo com a diminuição do controle de BRAPL no final do ciclo. As aplicações seqüenciais de herbicidas proporcionaram maior rendimento de grãos do que as misturas em tanque. Os rendimentos de grãos obtidos com a aplicação de herbicidas nas diversas épocas não foram diferentes em relação às suas respectivas capinas.

The Nordic electricity market is often seen as an example of how to create a working, developed and integrated electricity market. Nevertheless, this thesis studies the obstacles of transmission network investments and the market integration challenges in the Nordic electricity market. The main focus is in the Nordic Transmission system operators (TSOs), which have a key role in grid development. This study introduces a case study of cancellation of South-West link, Western part, which was seen as essential grid investment in order to improve the Nordic electricity market functioning but ended up with cancellation in 2013. This study includes semi-structured theme interviews of the experts among Nordic electricity industry stakeholders. Despite the political will to create more equal prices for electricity in the Nordic market, the differing national regulation, mixed incentives created by bottleneck income and the focus moving from Nordic integration to European integration may create challenges to the Nordic electricity market integration in the future.
