The influence of the equatorial ligand on the electrochemical oxidation of the compounds [H3CCo(chel)B], where chel is bis (dimethylglyoximato), (DH)2; bis(salicylaldehyde)ethylenediimine, salen; bis(salicylaldehyde) o-phenylenediimine, salophen; bis(salicylaldehyde)cyclohexylenediimine, salcn; bis(acetylacetone) ethylenediimine, bae; and where B is pyridine when chel is (DH2), and dimethylformamide (DMF) when chel represents a Schiff base (salen, salcn, salophen and bae), was studied by means of cyclic voltammetry in DMF, 0.2 M in tetraethylammonium perchlorate, between 25 and -25°C, with a platinum disk working electrode. Absorption spectra in the visible and near ultraviolet regions for these compounds in DMF at 25°C were obtained. The complexes exhibit a reversible one-electron oxidation, at -20°C with scan rates >0.5 V s-; chemical reactions following electron transfer are not detected under these conditions. At slower potential or higher temperatures, the oxidized product decomposes chemically in a solvent-assisted (or nucleophile-assisted) reaction, yielding products which are electroactive in the applied potential range. The behavior of the [H3CCo (DH2)py] derivative is better described as a quasi-reversible charge transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Experimental evidence suggests that in the case of the [H3CCo(bae)] derivative at -20°C, the reactive -species is pentacoordinated and weakly adsorbed at the electrode surface. The value of E 1 2 and the energies of the first two absorption bands in the visible spectra reveal the ability of the studied complexes to donate and to delocalize electronic charge. © 1982.

Er3+:LiYF4 single crystal has been studied by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy in the IR-visible-UV (0-44000 cm-1) region from 4.2 K to room temperature. Polarized spectra were recorded in order to assign numerous Stark levels of electronic transitions mentioned but not attributed before in the related literature and to discuss the irreducible representations (irreps) of the 4I15/2 sublevels. A parametric hamiltonian, including free ion (Eν, α, β, γ, Tλ, ζ, Mk and Pi) and crystal field parameters (B2 0, B4 0, B4 4, B6 0 and B6 4) in an approximate D2d symmetry for the rare earth site in this scheelite type structure, was used to simulate 109 energy positions of the Er ion with a r.m.s. standard deviation of 14.6 cm-1. A comparison with previously published results for Nd3+ in the same matrix is done. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Nonlinear (NL) optical properties of antimony oxide based glasses (AG) were characterized for excitation wavelengths from 800 to 1600 m. The NL refractive indices, n2, and the two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient, β, have been evaluated using the Z-scan technique. Values of n2≈ 10-15 - 10-14 cm2/W of electronic origin were measured and negligible TPA coefficients (β < 0.003 cm/GW) were determined. The response time of the nonlinearity is faster than 100 fs as determined using the Kerr shutter technique. The figure-of-merit usually considered for all-optical switching, T = 2βλ/n2 , indicates that AG are very good materials for ultrafast switches at telecom wavelengths. © 2007 IEEE.

In the present paper we investigated the effect of adsorbed PVA on Pt electrodes on classic electrochemical processes such as hydrogen UPD, oxygen reduction and CO electro-oxidation. Upon adsorption PVA blocks roughly 50% of the hydrogen sites and can not be removed from the Pt surface through cycling in the potential range of 0.05-1.0 V vs. RHE. Potentiodynamic experiments under controlled hydrodynamic conditions provided by rotating disk electrode experiments showed a negative impact of the adsorbed PVA on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Cyclic-voltammetry results revealed that not even CO was able to remove PVA from the Pt surface. Regarding the oxidation of CO, the adsorbed polymer positively shifted the CO oxidation peak potential, therefore higher potentials are required to free the Pt surface from CO poisoning. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy evidenced that the presence of PVA shifted the linearly bound CO frequency toward higher wavenumbers, a process found to be independent of the Pt surface orientation. In situ electrochemical X-ray absorption spectroscopy results showed that PVA also impacted the electronic properties of platinum by decreasing the occupancy of the Pt conducting 5d band. Our findings clearly support the efforts toward understanding the nature of the interaction between polymers and metallic surfaces as well as the impact on technological applications (e.g. in PEMFCs). © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, a combined theoretical and experimental study on the electronic structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of beta zinc molybdate (β-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized by the hydrothermal method has been employed. These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and PL measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level have been carried out. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement, FT-Raman and FT-IR spectra showed that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. The Raman and IR frequencies experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretically calculated results. UV-Vis absorption measurements shows an optical band gap value of 3.17 eV, while the calculated band structure has a value of 3.22 eV. The density of states indicate that the main orbitals involved in the electronic structure of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are (O 2p-valence band and Mo 4d-conduction band). Finally, PL properties of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are explained by means of distortions effects in octahedral [ZnO6] and [MoO6] clusters and inhomogeneous electronic distribution into the lattice with the electron density map. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Ba(Zr0.75Ti0.25)O3 (BZT-75/25) powders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. Samples were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) techniques. Their electronic structures were evaluated by first-principle quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory at the B3LYP level. Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature. XRD patterns and Rietveld refinement data indicate that the samples have a cubic structure. XANES spectra confirm the presence of pyramidal [TiO5] clusters and octahedral [TiO6] clusters in the disordered BZT-75/25 powders. EXAFS spectra indicate distortion of Ti-O and Ti-O-Ti bonds the first and second coordination shells, respectively. UV-Vis absorption spectra confirm the presence of different optical bandgap values and the band structure indicates an indirect bandgap for this material. The density of states demonstrates that intermediate energy levels occur between the valence band (VB) and the conduction band (CB). These electronic levels are due to the predominance of 4d orbitals of Zr atoms in relation to 3d orbitals of Ti atoms in the CB, while the VB is dominated by 2p orbitals related to O atoms. There was good correlation between the experimental and theoretical optical bandgap values. When excited at 482 nm at room temperature, BZT-75/25 powder treated at 500 C for 2 h exhibited broad and intense PL emission with a maximum at 578 nm in the yellow region. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In this report, we investigate the polarization effect (linear, elliptical and circular) on the two-photon absorption (2PA) properties of a chiral compound based in azoaromatic moieties using the femtosecond Z-scan technique with low repetition rate and low pulse energy. We observed a strong 2PA modulation between 800 nm and 960 nm as a function the polarization changes from linear through elliptical to circular. Such results were interpreted employing the sum-over-essential states approach, which allowed us to model the 2PA circular-linear dichroism effect and to identifier the overlapping of the excited electronic states responsible by the 2PA allowed band. The photophysics of the 1-nitronaphthalene molecular system, after the absorption transition to the first singlet excited state, is theoretically studied for investigating the ultrafast multiplicity change to the triplet manifold. The consecutive transient absorption spectra experimentally observed in this molecular system are also studied. To identify the electronic states involved in the nonradiative decay, the minimum energy path of the first singlet excited state is obtained using the complete active space self-consistent field//configurational second-order perturbation approach. A near degeneracy region was found between the first singlet and the second triplet excited states with large spin-orbit coupling between them. The intersystem crossing rate was also evaluated. To support the proposed deactivation model the transient absorption spectra observed in the experiments were also considered. For this, computer simulations using sequential quantum mechanic-molecular mechanic methodology was used to consider the solvent effect in the ground and excited states for proper comparison with the experimental results. The absorption transitions from the second triplet excited state in the relaxed geometry permit to describe the transient absorption band experimentally observed around 200 fs after the absorption transition. This indicates that the T-2 electronic state is populated through the intersystem crossing presented here. The two transient absorption bands experimentally observed between 2 and 45 ps after the absorption transition are described here as the T-1 -> T-3 and T-1 -> T-5 transitions, supporting that the intermediate triplet state (T-2) decays by internal conversion to T-1. Solvent effects on the one- and two-photon absorption (IPA and 2PA) of disperse orange 3 (DO3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are studied using a discrete polarizable embedding (PE) response theory. The scheme comprises a quantum region containing the chromophore and an atomically granulated classical region for the solvent accounting for full interactions within and between the two regions. Either classical molecular dynamics (MD) or hybrid Car-Parrinello (CP) quantum/classical (QM/MM) molecular dynamics simulations are employed to describe the solvation of DO3 in DMSO, allowing for an analysis of the effect of the intermolecular short-range repulsion, long-range attraction, and electrostatic interactions on the conformational changes of the chromophore and also the effect of the solute-solvent polarization. PE linear response calculations are performed to verify the character, solvatochromic shift, and overlap of the two lowest energy transitions responsible for the linear absorption spectrum of DO3 in DMSO in the visible spectral region. Results of the PE linear and quadratic response calculations, performed using uncorrelated solute-solvent configurations sampled from either the classical or hybrid CP QM/MM MD simulations, are used to estimate the width of the line shape function of the two electronic lowest energy excited states, which allow a prediction of the 2PA cross-sections without the use of empirical parameters. Appropriate exchange-correlation functionals have been employed in order to describe the charge-transfer process following the electronic transitions of the chromophore in solution.

Oxygen-deficient TiO2 films with enhanced visible and near-infrared optical absorption have been deposited by reactive sputtering using a planar diode radio frequency magnetron configuration. It is observed that the increase in the absorption coefficient is more effective when the O-2 gas supply is periodically interrupted rather than by a decrease of the partial O-2 gas pressure in the deposition plasma. The optical absorption coefficient at 1.5 eV increases from about 1 x 10(2) cm(-1) to more than 4 x 10(3) cm(-1) as a result of the gas flow discontinuity. A red-shift of similar to 0.24 eV in the optical absorption edge is also observed. High resolution transmission electron microscopy with composition analysis shows that the films present a dense columnar morphology, with estimated mean column width of 40nm. Moreover, the interruptions of the O-2 gas flow do not produce detectable variations in the film composition along its growing direction. X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman experiments indicate the presence of the TiO2 anatase, rutile, and brookite phases. The anatase phase is dominant, with a slight increment of the rutile and brookite phases in films deposited under discontinued O-2 gas flow. The increase of optical absorption in the visible and near-infrared regions has been attributed to a high density of defects in the TiO2 films, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations that place oxygen-related vacancy states in the upper third of the optical bandgap. The electronic structure calculation results, along with the adopted deposition method and experimental data, have been used to propose a mechanism to explain the formation of the observed oxygen-related defects in TiO2 thin films. The observed increase in sub-bandgap absorption and the modeling of the corresponding changes in the electronic structure are potentially useful concerning the optimization of efficiency of the photocatalytic activity and the magnetic doping of TiO2 films.
