The formation of a hollow cellular sphere is often one of the first steps of multicellular embryonic development. In the case of Hydra, the sphere breaks its initial symmetry to form a foot-head axis. During this process a gene, ks1, is increasingly expressed in localized cell domains whose size distribution becomes scale-free at the axis-locking moment. We show that a physical model based solely on the production and exchange of ks1-promoting factors among neighboring cells robustly reproduces the scaling behavior as well as the experimentally observed spontaneous and temperature-directed symmetry breaking.

Using the experimental values of the chemical potentials of liquid 4He and of a 3He impurity in liquid 4He, we derive a model-independent lower (upper) bound to the kinetic (potential) energy per particle at zero temperature. The values of the bounds at the experimental saturation density are 13.42 K for the kinetic energy and -20.59 K for the potential energy. All the theoretical calculations based on the Lennard-Jones potential violate the upper-bound condition for the potential energy.

Amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon films obtained by Hot-Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition have been incorporated as active layers in n-type coplanar top gate thin film transistors deposited on glass substrates covered with SiO 2. Amorphous silicon devices exhibited mobility values of 1.3 cm 2 V - 1 s - 1, which are very high taking into account the amorphous nature of the material. Nanocrystalline transistors presented mobility values as high as 11.5 cm 2 V - 1 s - 1 and resulted in low threshold voltage shift (∼ 0.5 V).

Hydrogenated amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon, deposited by catalytic chemical vapour deposition, have been doped during deposition by the addition of diborane and phosphine in the feed gas, with concentrations in the region of 1%. The crystalline fraction, dopant concentration and electrical properties of the films are studied. The nanocrystalline films exhibited a high doping efficiency, both for n and p doping, and electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films. The doping efficiency of n-type amorphous silicon is similar to that obtained for plasma-deposited electronic-grade amorphous silicon, whereas p-type layers show a doping efficiency of one order of magnitude lower. A higher deposition temperature of 450°C was required to achieve p-type films with electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films.

A general and straightforward analytical expression for the defect-state-energy distribution of a-Si:H is obtained through a statistical-mechanical treatment of the hydrogen occupation for different sites. Broadening of available defect energy levels (defect pool) and their charge state, both in electronic equilibrium and nonequilibrium steady-state situations, are considered. The model gives quantitative results that reproduce different defect phenomena, such as the thermally activated spin density, the gap-state dependence on the Fermi level, and the intensity and temperature dependence of light-induced spin density. An interpretation of the Staebler-Wronski effect is proposed, based on the ''conversion'' of shallow charged centers to neutrals near the middle of the gap as a consequence of hydrogen redistribution.

We study the effect of a magnetic field on the martensitic transition of a Cu-Al-Mn shape-memory alloy. The martensitic transition has been studied through resistance measurements under applied magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 50 kOe. Negative magnetoresistance showing an almost linear dependence with the square of the magnetization has been observed. This magnetoresistive effect is associated with the existence of small ferromagnetic Mn-clusters. Its strength and thermal dependence is different in both phases. The martensitic transition temperature is slightly increased and its spread in temperature significantly reduced upon increasing the field. These results show the existence of magnetoelastic coupling, which favors the nucleation of those martensitic variants with the easy magnetization axis aligned with the field.

The equivalence between the covariant and the noncovariant versions of a constrained system is shown to hold after quantization in the framework of the field-antifield formalism. Our study covers the cases of electromagnetism and Yang-Mills fields and sheds light on some aspects of the Faddeev-Popov method, for both the covariant and noncovariant approaches, which have not been fully clarified in the literature.

The physical contributions to the KNiF3 magnetic exchange coupling integral have been obtained from specially designed ab initio cluster model calculations. Three important mechanisms have been identified. These are the delocalization of the magnetic orbitals into the anion p band, the variational contribution of the second-order interactions, and the many-body terms hidden in the two-body operator and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian.

Isothermal magnetization curves up to 23 T have been measured in Gd5Si1.8Ge2.2. We show that the values of the entropy change at the first-order magnetostructural transition, obtained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and the Maxwell relation, are coincident, provided the Maxwell relation is evaluated only within the transition region and the maximum applied field is high enough to complete the transition. These values are also in agreement with the entropy change obtained from differential scanning calorimetry. We also show that a simple phenomenological model based on the temperature and field dependence of the magnetization accounts for these results.

The magnetocaloric effect that originates from the martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Gashape-memory alloy is studied. We show that this effect is controlled by the magnetostructural coupling at boththe martensitic variant and magnetic domain length scales. A large entropy change induced by moderatemagnetic fields is obtained for alloys in which the magnetic moment of the two structural phases is not verydifferent. We also show that this entropy change is not associated with the entropy difference between themartensitic and the parent phase arising from the change in the crystallographic structure which has beenfound to be independent of the magnetic field within this range of fields.

Background: Hox and ParaHox gene clusters are thought to have resulted from the duplication of a ProtoHox gene cluster early in metazoan evolution. However, the origin and evolution of the other genes belonging to the extended Hox group of homeobox-containing genes, that is, Mox and Evx, remains obscure. We constructed phylogenetic trees with mouse, amphioxus and Drosophila extended Hox and other related Antennapedia-type homeobox gene sequences and analyzed the linkage data available for such genes. Results: We claim that neither Mox nor Evx is a Hox or ParaHox gene. We propose a scenariothat reconciles phylogeny with linkage data, in which an Evx/Mox ancestor gene linked to aProtoHox cluster was involved in a segmental tandem duplication event that generated an arrayof all Hox-like genes, referred to as the `coupled¿ cluster. A chromosomal breakage within thiscluster explains the current composition of the extended Hox cluster (with Evx, Hox and Moxgenes) and the ParaHox cluster. Conclusions: Most studies dealing with the origin and evolution of Hox and ParaHox clustershave not included the Hox-related genes Mox and Evx. Our phylogenetic analyses and theavailable linkage data in mammalian genomes support an evolutionary scenario in which anancestor of Evx and Mox was linked to the ProtoHox cluster, and that a tandem duplication of alarge genomic region early in metazoan evolution generated the Hox and ParaHox clusters, plusthe cluster-neighbors Evx and Mox. The large `coupled¿ Hox-like cluster EvxHox/MoxParaHox wassubsequently broken, thus grouping the Mox and Evx genes to the Hox clusters, and isolating theParaHox cluster.

This paper analyzes the relationship between spatial density of economic activity and interregional differences in the productivity of industrial labour in Spain during the period 1860-1999. In the spirit of Ciccone and Hall (1996) and Ciccone (2002), we analyze the evolution of this relationship over the long term in Spain. Using data on the period 1860-1999 we show the existence of an agglomeration effect linking the density of economic activity with labour productivity in the industry. This effect was present since the beginning of the industrialization process in the middle of the 19th century but has been decreasing over time. The estimated elasticity of labour productivity with respect to employment density was close to 8% in the subperiod 1860-1900, reduces to a value of around 7% in the subperiod 1914-1930, to 4% in the subperiod 1965-1979 and becomes insignificant in the final subperiod 1985-1999. At the end of the period analyzed there is no evidence of the existence of net agglomeration effects in the industry. This result could be explained by an important increase in the congestion effects in large industrial metropolitan areas that would have compensated the centripetal or agglomeration forces at work. Furthermore, this result is also consistent with the evidence of a dispersion of industrial activity in Spain during the last decades.
