Several high-order vibration-rotation perturbations in the high-resolution infrared spectrum of monofluoroacetylene, HCCF, are assigned and analyzed in detail. They result in avoided crossings in the rotational structure of several bands, and precise values for the effective high-order terms in the Hamiltonian have been determined. The significance of these results for intramolecular vibrational redistribution is discussed.

The theory of rotational-pucker-vibrational transitions in the vibrational spectrum of cyclobutane is reviewed. Puckering sideband structure on the 1453 cm-1v14 infra-red fundamental of C4H8 has been observed and analysed, in terms of two slightly different puckering potential functions for the ground and the excited vibrational states. The results have been fitted to quartic-quadratic potential functions in the puckering coordinate, with a barrier to inversion of 503 cm-1 (1•44 kcal mole-1 = 6•02 kJ mole-1) in the ground state and 491 cm-1 in the excited state ν14 = 1. For reasonable assumptions about the reduced mass, the equilibrium dihedral angle of the C4 ring is determined to be about 35°, in agreement with previous estimates. Ueda and Shimanouchi's observations on the 2878 cm-1 C4H8 band have been re-analysed, and puckering sidebands have also been observed and analysed for the 1083 cm-1v14 infra-red fundamental of C4D8. Pure puckering transitions have been observed in the Raman spectrum of C4H8 vapour. All of these observations are shown to be consistent with the same ground state puckering potential function.

We have performed the first completely ab initio lattice dynamics calculation of the full orthorhombic cell of polyethylene using periodic density functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Contrary to current perceptions, we show that LDA accurately describes the structure whereas GGA fails. We emphasize that there is no parametrization of the results. We then rigorously tested our calculation by computing the phonon dispersion curves across the entire Brillouin zone and comparing them to the vibrational spectra, in particular the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra, of polyethylene (both polycrystalline and aligned) and perdeuteriopolyethylene. The F-point frequencies (where the infrared and Raman active modes occur) are in good agreement with the latest low temperature data. The near-perfect reproduction of the INS spectra, gives confidence in the results and allows Lis to deduce a number of physical properties including the elastic moduli, parallel and perpendicular to the chain. We find that the Young's modulus for an infinitely long, perfectly crystalline polyethylene is 360.2 GPa at 0 K. The highest experimental value is 324 GPa, indicating that current high modulus fibers are similar to 90% of their maximum possible strength.

By combining the results of both x-ray diffraction and neutron total-scattering experiments, we show that Ni(CN)(2) exhibits long-range structural order only in two dimensions, with no true periodicity perpendicular to its gridlike layers. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis gives an experimental distinction between M-C and M-N bond lengths in a homometallic cyanide framework and identifies the vibrational modes responsible for anomalous positive and negative thermal expansion in the title compound.

A double minimum six-dimensional Potential energy surface (PES) is determined in symmetry coordinates for the most stable rhombic (D-2h) B-4 isomer in its (1)A(g) electronic ground state by fitting to energies calculated ab initio. The PES exhibits a barrier to the D-4h square structure of 255 cm(-1). The vibrational levels (J=0) are calculated variationally using an approach which involves the Watson kinetic energy operator expressed in normal coordinates. The pattern of about 65 vibrational levels up to 1600 cm-1 for all stable isotopomers is analyzed. Analogous to the inversion in ammonia-like molecules, the rhombus rearrangements lead to splittings of the vibrational levels. In B-4 it is the B-1g (D-4h mode which distorts the square molecule to its planar rhombic form. The anharmonic fundamental vibrational transitions of B-11(4) are calculated to be (splittings in parentheses): G(O) = 2352(22) cm(-1), v(1)(A(1g)) - 1136(24) cm(-1,) v(2)(B-1g)=209(144) cm(-1) v(3)(B-2g)=1198(19)cm(-1), v(4)(B-2u) = 271(24) cm(-1), and v(5) (E-u) = 1030( 166) cm(-1) (D-4h notation). Their variations in all stable isotoporners were investigated. Due to the presence of strong anharmonic resonances between the B-1g in-plane distortion and the B-2u, out-of-plane bending modes. the hiaher overtones and combination levels are difficult to assign unequivocally. The molecular structures of NbOBr3, NbSCl3, and NbSBr3 have been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) at nozzle-tip temperatures of 250 degreesC, taking into account the possible presence of NbOCl3 as a contaminant in the NbSCl3 sample and NbOBr3 in the NbSBr3 sample. The experimental data are consistent with trigonal-pyramidal molecules having C-3v symmetry. Infrared spectra of molecules trapped in argon or nitrogen matrices were recorded and exhibit the characteristic fundamental stretching modes for C-3v species. Well resolved isotopic fine structure (Cl-35 and Cl-37) was observed for NbSCl3, and for NbOCl3 which occurred as an impurity in the NbSCl3 spectra. Quantum mechanical calculations of the structures and vibrational frequencies of the four YNbX3 molecules (Y = O, S; X = Cl, Br) were carried out at several levels of theory, most importantly B3LYP DFT with either the Stuttgart RSC ECP or Hay-Wadt (n + 1) ECP VDZ basis set for Nb and the 6-311 G* basis set for the nonmetal atoms. Theoretical values for the bond lengths are 0.01-0.04 Angstrom longer than the experimental ones of type r(a), in accord with general experience, but the bond angles with theoretical minus experimental differences of only 1.0-1.5degrees are notably accurate. Symmetrized force fields were also calculated. The experimental bond lengths (r(g)/Angstrom) and angles (angle(alpha)/deg) with estimated 2sigma uncertainties from GED are as follows. NbOBr3: r(Nb=O) = 1.694(7), r(Nb-Br) = 2.429(2), angle(O=Nb-Br) = 107.3(5), angle(Br-Nb-Br) = 111.5(5). NbSBr3: r(Nb=S) = 2.134(10), r(Nb-Br) = 2.408(4), angle(S=Nb-Br) = 106.6(7), angle(Br-Nb-Br) = 112.2(6). NbSCl3: Nb=S) = 2.120(10), r(Nb-Cl) = 2.271(6), angle(S=Nb-Cl) = 107.8(12), angle(Cl-Nb-Cl) = 111.1(11).

We report results on the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of SnO(2) obtained using first-principles calculations performed within the density functional theory. All the calculated phonon frequencies, real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric function, the energy-loss spectrum, the refractive index, the extinction, and the absorption coefficients show good agreement with experimental results. Based on our calculations, the SnO(2) electron and hole effective masses were found to be strongly anisotropic. The lattice contribution to the low-frequency region of the SnO(2) dielectric function arising from optical phonons was also determined resulting the values of E > (1aSyen) (latt) (0) = 14.6 and E > (1ayen) (latt) (0) = 10.7 for directions perpendicular and parallel to the tetragonal c-axis, respectively. This is in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. After adding the electronic contribution to the lattice contribution, a total average value of E >(1)(0) = 18.2 is predicted for the static permittivity constant of SnO(2).

In this work we employ the state of the art pseudopotential method, within a generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory, to investigate the adsorption process of furan on the silicon (001) surface. A direct comparison of different adsorption structures with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and high resolution spectroscopy experimental data allows us to identify the [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction as the most probable adsorbate. In addition, theoretical scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images are presented, with a view to contributing to further experimental investigations.

We present our theoretical results for the structural, electronic, vibrational and optical properties of MO(2) (M = Sn, Zr, Hf and Ti) obtained by first-principles calculations. Relativistic effects are demonstrated to be important for a realistic description of the detailed structure of the electronic frequency-dependent dielectric function, as well as of the carrier effective masses. Based on our results, we found that the main contribution of the high values calculated for the oxides dielectric constants arises from the vibrational properties of these oxides, and the vibrational static dielectric constant values diminish with increasing pressure. The molecular arrangement in organic thin films is crucial for their increasing technological applications. Here, we use vibrational spectroscopy by sum-frequency generation (SFG) to study the ordering of polyelectrolyte layers adsorbed on silica for all steps of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. In situ measurements during adsorption and rinsing showed that the adsorbed polymer has a disordered conformation and confirmed surface charge overcompensation upon polyelectrolyte adsorption by probing the interfacial electric field. In dry films, the polymer chains acquired a net orientational ordering, which was affected, however, by the adsorption of subsequent layers. Such a detailed characterization may allow the control of LbL film structure and functionality with unprecedented power.

Sum-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy (SFVS) has been used to investigate the effect of nitrogen-flow drying on the molecular ordering of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) alternated with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS). We find that films dried by spontaneous water evaporation are more ordered and homogeneous than films dried by nitrogen flow. The latter are quite inhomogeneous and may have regions with highly disordered polymer conformation. We propose that drying by spontaneous water evaporation reduces the effect of drag by the drying front, while during nitrogen-flow drying the fast evaporation of water ""freezes"" the disordered conformation of adsorbed polyelectrolyte molecules. These findings are important for many applications of LbL films, since device performance usually depends on film morphology and its molecular structure.

Unveiling the mechanisms of energy relaxation in biomolecules is key to our understanding of protein stability, allostery, intramolecular signaling, and long-lasting quantum coherence phenomena at ambient temperatures. Yet, the relationship between the pathways of energy transfer and the functional role of the residues involved remains largely unknown. Here, we develop a simulation method of mapping out residues that are highly efficient in relaxing an initially localized excess vibrational energy and perform site-directed mutagenesis functional assays to assess the relevance of these residues to protein function. We use the ligand binding domains of thyroid hormone receptor (TR) subtypes as a test case and find that conserved arginines, which are critical to TR transactivation function, are the most effective heat diffusers across the protein structure. These results suggest a hitherto unsuspected connection between a residue`s ability to mediate intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution and its functional relevance.

3`-Azido-3`-deoxythymidine (zidovudine, AZT), a synthetic analog of natural nucleoside thymidine, has been used extensively in AIDS treatments. We report here the synthesis. X-ray crystal and molecular structure, NMR, IR and Raman spectra and the thermal behavior of a novel carbonate of AZT [(AZT-O)(2)C=O], prepared by the reaction of zidovudine with carbonyldiimidazole. The carbonate compound, C(21)H(24)N(10)O(9), crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4(1)2(1)2 with a = b = 15.284(1), c = 21.695(1) angstrom, and Z = 8 molecules per unit cell. It consists of two AZT moieties of closely related conformations which are bridged by a carbonyl group to adopt a folded Z-like shape. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Raman band assigned to the nu(C=O)mode in N,N-dimethylformamide (at ca. 1660 cm(-1)) was used as a probe to study a group of ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C(n)Mlm]Br) with different alkyl groups (n = 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 carbons) in binary equimolar binary mixtures with dimethylformamide. Due to the high electric dipole moment of the group C=O, there is a substantial coupling between adjacent molecules in the solution, and the corresponding Raman band involves both vibrational and reorientational modes. Different chain lengths of the ILs lead to different extents of the uncoupling of adjacent molecules of dimethylformamide, resulting in different shifts for this band in the mixtures. Information about the organization of ionic liquids in solution was obtained and a model of aggregation for these systems is proposed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
