Dynamic light scattering (DLS), time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ), and isothermal titration microcalorimetry have been used to show that, in dilute solution, low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 12 kDa) interacts with the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether, C12E8, to form a complex. Whereas the relaxation time distributions for the binary C12E8/water and PEG/water systems are unimodal, in the ternary mixtures they may be either uni- or bimodal depending on the relative concentrations of the components. At low concentrations of PEG or surfactant, the components of the relaxation time distribution are unresolvable, but the distribution becomes bimodal at higher concentrations of either polymer or surfactant. For the ternary system in excess surfactant, we ascribe, on the basis of the changes in apparent hydrodynamic radii and the scattered intensities, the fast mode to a single micelle, the surface of which is associated with the polymer and the slow mode to a similar complex but containing two or three micelles per PEG chain. Titration microcalorimetry results show that the interaction between C12E8, and PEG is exothermic and about 1 kJ mol(-1) at concentrations higher than the CMC of C12E8. The aggregation number, obtained by TRFQ, is roughly constant when either the PEG or the C12E8 concentration is increased at a given concentration of the second component, owing to the increasing amount of surfactant micelles inside the complex.

Results are reported from a search for physics beyond the standard model in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV, focusing on the signature with a single, isolated, high-transverse-momentum lepton (electron or muon), energetic jets, and large missing transverse momentum. The data sample comprises an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is motivated by models of new physics, including supersymmetry. The observed event yields are consistent with standard model backgrounds predicted using control samples obtained from the data. The characteristics of the event sample are consistent with those expected for the production of tt̄ and W+jets events. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the parameter space for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model.

A measurement of the single-top-quark t-channel production cross section in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. Two different and complementary approaches have been followed. The first approach exploits the distributions of the pseudorapidity of the recoil jet and reconstructed top-quark mass using background estimates determined from control samples in data. The second approach is based on multivariate analysis techniques that probe the compatibility of the candidate events with the signal. Data have been collected for the muon and electron final states, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 and 1.56 fb-1, respectively. The single-top-quark production cross section in the t-channel is measured to be 67.2±6.1 pb, in agreement with the approximate next-to-next-to-leading- order standard model prediction. Using the standard model electroweak couplings, the CKM matrix element |V tb| is measured to be 1.020 ± 0.046 (meas.) ± 0.017 (theor.). © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

The inelastic scattering of light, Raman scattering, presents a very low cross section. However, the signal can be amplified by several orders of magnitude, leading to the so-called surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) phenomenon. Basically, the SERS effect is achieved when the target molecule (analyte) is adsorbed onto metallic nanoparticles, usually noble metals. This article presents an overview of the applications of SERS to cancer diagnosis and the detection of pesticides, explosives, and drugs (illicit and pharmacological). SERS is routinely applied nowadays to detect and identify analytes at very low concentrations, including for single-molecule detection. However, the application of SERS as an analytical tool requires reliable and reproducible SERS substrates, in terms of enhancement factors, which depends on the size, shape, and aggregation of the metallic nanoparticles. Therefore, the production of reliable and reproducible SERS substrates is a challenge in the field. Besides, the metallic nanoparticles can also induce changes in the system by possible interactions with the analyte under investigation, which must be taken into account. This review will present work in which, under certain specific experimental conditions, SERS has been analytically applied.

Plasmon-enhanced spectroscopic techniques have expanded single-molecule detection (SMD) and are revolutionizing areas such as bio-imaging and single-cell manipulation. Surface-enhanced (resonance) Raman scattering (SERS or SERRS) combines high sensitivity with molecularfingerprint information at the single-molecule level. Spectra originating from single-molecule SERS experiments are rare events, which occur only if a single molecule is located in a hot-spot zone. In this spot, the molecule is selectively exposed to a significant enhancement associated with a high, local electromagnetic field in the plasmonic substrate. Here, we report an SMD study with an electrostatic approach in which a Langmuir film of a phospholipid with anionic polar head groups (PO 4 -) was doped with cationic methylene blue (MB), creating a homogeneous, two-dimensional distribution of dyes in the monolayer. The number of dyes in the probed area of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film coating the Ag nanostructures established a regime in which single-molecule events were observed, with the identification based on direct matching of the observed spectrum at each point of the mapping with a reference spectrum for the MB molecule. In addition, advanced fitting techniques were tested with the data obtained from micro-Raman mapping, thus achieving real-time processing to extract the MB single-molecule spectra. © 2013 Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

A Co-doped silica film was deposited on the surface of a Si(100) wafer and isothermally annealed at 750 degrees C to form spherical Co nanoparticles embedded in the silica film and a few atomic layer thick CoSi2 nanoplatelets within the wafer. The structure, morphology, and spatial orientation of the nanoplatelets were characterized. The experimental results indicate that the nanoplatelets exhibit hexagonal shape and a uniform thickness. The CoSi2 nanostructures lattice is coherent with the Si lattice, and each of them is parallel to one of the four planes belonging to the {111} crystallographic form of the host lattice. Matter-wave superradiance is based on the interplay between ultracold atoms coherently organized in momentum space and a backscattered wave. Here, we show that this mechanism may be triggered by Mie scattering from the atomic cloud. We show how the laser light populates the modes of the cloud and thus imprints a phase gradient on the excited atomic dipoles. The interference with the atoms in the ground state results in a grating that in turn generates coherent emission, contributing to the backward light wave onset. The atomic recoil "halos" created by the Mie-scattered light exhibit a strong anisotropy, in contrast to single-atom scattering.

This paper describes a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) systematic investigation regarding the functionalization of gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles with diphenyl dichalcogenides, i.e. diphenyl disulfide, diphenyl diselenide, and diphenyl ditelluride. Our results showed that, in all cases, functionalization took place with the cleavage of the chalcogenchalcogen bond on the surface of the metal. According to our density functional theory calculations, the molecules assumed a tilted orientation with respect to the metal surface for both Au and Ag, in which the angle of the phenyl ring relative to the metallic surface decreased as the mass of the chalcogen atom increased. The detected differences in the ordinary Raman and SERS spectra were assigned to the distinct stretching frequencies of the carbonchalcogen bond and its relative contribution to the ring vibrational modes. In addition, the SERS spectra showed that there was no significant interaction between the phenyl ring and the surface, in agreement with the tilted orientation observed from our density functional theory calculations. The results described herein indicate that diphenyl dichalcogenides can be successfully employed as starting materials for the functionalization of Au nanoparticles with organosulfur, organoselenium, and organotellurium compounds. On the other hand, diphenyl disulfide and diphenyl diselenide could be employed for the functionalization of Ag nanoparticles, while the partial oxidation of the organotellurium unit could be detected on the Ag surface. The quark condensate is a fundamental free parameter of Chiral Perturbation Theory ($chi PT$), since it determines the relative size of the mass and momentum terms in the power expansion. In order to confirm or contradict the assumption of a large quark condensate, on which $chi PT$ is based, experimental tests are needed. In particular, the $S$-wave $pipi$ scattering lengths $a_0^0$ and $a_0^2$ can be predicted precisely within $chi PT$ as a function of this parameter and can be measured very cleanly in the decay $K^{pm} to pi^{+} pi^{-} e^{pm} stackrel{mbox{tiny(---)}}{nu_e}$ ($K_{e4}$). About one third of the data collected in 2003 and 2004 by the NA48/2 experiment were analysed and 342,859 $K_{e4}$ candidates were selected. The background contamination in the sample could be reduced down to 0.3% and it could be estimated directly from the data, by selecting events with the same signature as $K_{e4}$, but requiring for the electron the opposite charge with respect to the kaon, the so-called ``wrong sign'' events. This is a clean background sample, since the kaon decay with $Delta S=-Delta Q$, that would be the only source of signal, can only take place through two weak decays and is therefore strongly suppressed. The Cabibbo-Maksymowicz variables, used to describe the kinematics of the decay, were computed under the assumption of a fixed kaon momentum of 60 GeV/$c$ along the $z$ axis, so that the neutrino momentum could be obtained without ambiguity. The measurement of the form factors and of the $pipi$ scattering length $a_0^0$ was performed in a single step by comparing the five-dimensional distributions of data and MC in the kinematic variables. The MC distributions were corrected in order to properly take into account the trigger and selection efficiencies of the data and the background contamination. The following parameter values were obtained from a binned maximum likelihood fit, where $a_0^2$ was expressed as a function of $a_0^0$ according to the prediction of chiral perturbation theory: f'_s/f_s = 0.133+- 0.013(stat)+- 0.026(syst) f''_s/f_s = -0.041+- 0.013(stat)+- 0.020(syst) f_e/f_s = 0.221+- 0.051(stat)+- 0.105(syst) f'_e/f_s = -0.459+- 0.170(stat)+- 0.316(syst) tilde{f_p}/f_s = -0.112+- 0.013(stat)+- 0.023(syst) g_p/f_s = 0.892+- 0.012(stat)+- 0.025(syst) g'_p/f_s = 0.114+- 0.015(stat)+- 0.022(syst) h_p/f_s = -0.380+- 0.028(stat)+- 0.050(syst) a_0^0 = 0.246+- 0.009(stat)+- 0.012(syst)}+- 0.002(theor), where the statistical uncertainty only includes the effect of the data statistics and the theoretical uncertainty is due to the width of the allowed band for $a_0^2$.
