Jokainen on oma yrittäjänsä. Identiteetti, talous ja yhteiskunta Image-lehdessä vuosina 1990–1993

Tutkielman aiheena ovat lausumat identiteetistä, taloudesta ja yhteiskunnasta aikakauslehti Imagessa vuosina 1990–1993. Tutkielman alkuperäislähteinä on käytetty Imagen artikkeleita, joita tarkastellaan 1990-luvun alun Suomen yhteiskunnallisen murroksen kontekstia vasten. Tälle aikakaudelle keskeisiä tekijöitä olivat syvä lama, Neuvostoliiton romahdus sekä EU-jäsenyyshanke. Tutkielma käsittelee yhteiskunnallisen murroksen kuvaamista sekä lehden tekijöiden ihanteita ja argumentaatiota vertailevan diskurssianalyysin keinoin. Työssä lausumia käsitellään temaattisesti liittäen ne esimerkiksi sukupolvikapinan, globalisaation ja kilpailutalouden puheavaruuksiin. Vuonna 1985 perustettu Image haki 1990-luvun alkupuolella paikkaansa julkaisuna. Vapaaehtoisvoimin toimitetusta kulttuurialbumista alettiin muovata kaupallista aikakauslehteä, joka tähtäsi kunnianhimoiseen yhteiskunnalliseen journalismiin. Tekijät halusivat haastaa vakiintuneen suomalaisen identiteetin ja korostaa kaupunkilaisen kulutuskulttuurin ja luovan työn merkitystä syvän taloustaantuman keskellä. Tutkielmassa esitettyjen tulosten mukaan Imagen 1990-luvun alun retoriikassa keskeistä oli Suomen liberalisoiminen. Yksilöllisempää, moniäänisempää ja kriittisempää kansalaisuutta ajettiin voimakkaasti samalla, kun Suomi haluttiin sitoa länsieurooppalaiseen viitekehykseen. Johtajavaltaiseksi koettua suomalaisuutta, korporatiivista kulttuuria ja suurten ikäluokkien valta-asemaa kritisoitiin lehdessä runsaasti. Tilalle haluttiin tuoda kosmopoliittinen identiteetti, joka kiinnittyisi etenkin luovaan työhön ja kaupunkilaiseen kulutuskulttuuriin. Image kiinnittyy tarkasteluajankohtansa kontekstissa laajempiin yhteiskunnallisiin puheavaruuksiin, joissa vaaditaan markkinalähtöisempää ja vapaampaa Suomea. Tutkielman keskiöön nouseekin lehden yhteiskunnan ja identiteetin liberalisointia sekä suomalaisen identiteetin uudistamista vaativa retoriikka, jonka yhteydet 2010- luvun talousvetoiseen yhteiskunnalliseen puheeseen ovat selkeät. 1990-luvun alussa esitettyjen puheenvuorojen tarkastelu auttaa siis ymmärtämään myös myöhempää yhteiskunnallista keskustelua.

Yritysidentiteetin johtamisen onnistuminen Tapaustutkimus: Finnairin identiteetti ja yrityskuva

Tutkimuksen kohteena oli Finnairin yritysidentiteetin johtamisen onnistuminen. Tutkimusongelmana oli arvioida Finnairin identiteetin johtamisen onnistumista vertaamalla Finnairin kommunikoitua identiteettiä kohderyhmän muodostamaan yrityskuvaan. Tutkimusongelman ratkaisemiseksi pureuduttiin kolmeen osaongelmaan; millainen on Finnairin kommunikoitu identiteetti, millaisen yrityskuvan kohderyhmä on muodostanut Finnairista sekä miten kommunikoitu identiteetti ja yrityskuva eroavat toisistaan. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen perusta pohjautui identiteettityyppien vuorovaikutusta ja niiden välisiä eroja käsittelevään Balmerin AC3ID –teoriakehikkoon sekä sitä täydentävään Balmerin ja Grayn tarkentavaan teoriaan. Tutkimuksessa kerättiin Finnairin kommunikoitua identiteettiä kuvaileva aineisto sekä muodostettiin siitä sisällönanalyysin avulla kohderyhmän mielikuvia mittaavia väittämiä. Kyselytutkimuksessa kartoitettiin kohderyhmän mielikuvat Finnairin kommunikoidun identiteetin sisällöstä. Kyselytutkimuksessa selvinneitä mielikuvia verrattiin kommunikoituun identiteettiin. Tällä saatiin selville, missä määrin kommunikoitu identiteetti ja yrityskuva poikkesivat toisistaan. Finnairin identiteetin johtamisessa oli tutkimuksen perusteella runsaasti kehitettävää. Kohderyhmän muodostama yrityskuva poikkesi vision, kahden arvon sekä brändilupauksen kohdalla kommunikoidusta identiteetistä. Kommunikoidulla identiteetillä ei saavutettu haluttua identiteettiä, eikä sillä onnistuttu viestimään sovittua identiteettiä. Finnair kuitenkin onnistui osittain identiteetin johtamisessa. Kohderyhmän yrityskuva vastasi kommunikoitua identiteettiä yhden arvon sekä mission osalta. Kommunikoidun identiteetin voidaan täten nähdä onnistuneen suhteellisen hyvin ideaalisen identiteetin tavoittelussa.

Cumulative mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae treated with compounds

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the larvicidal activity of Azadirachta indica, Melaleuca alternifolia, carapa guianensis essential oils and fermented extract of Carica papaya against Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) (Diptera: Culicidae). METHODS The larvicide test was performed in triplicate with 300 larvae for each experimental group using the third larval stage, which were exposed for 24h. The groups were: positive control with industrial larvicide (BTI) in concentrations of 0.37 ppm (PC1) and 0.06 ppm (PC2); treated with compounds of essential oils and fermented extract, 50.0% concentration (G1); treated with compounds of essential oils and fermented extract, 25.0% concentration (G2); treated with compounds of essential oils and fermented extract, 12.5% concentration (G3); and negative control group using water (NC1) and using dimethyl (NC2). The larvae were monitored every 60 min using direct visualization. RESULTS No mortality occurred in experimental groups NC1 and NC2 in the 24h exposure period, whereas there was 100% mortality in the PC1 and PC2 groups compared to NC1 and NC2. Mortality rates of 65.0%, 50.0% and 78.0% were observed in the groups G1, G2 and G3 respectively, compared with NC1 and NC2. CONCLUSIONS The association between three essential oils from Azadirachta indica, Melaleuca alternifolia, Carapa guianensis and fermented extract of Carica papaya was efficient at all concentrations. Therefore, it can be used in Aedes aegypti Liverpool third larvae stage control programs.

Transmission of macro-liquidity shocks to liquidity-sorted stock portfolios’ returns: The role of the financial crisis

This study examines the impact of macro-liquidity shocks on the returns of UK stock portfolios sorted on the basis of a series of micro-liquidity measures. The macro-liquidity shocks are extracted on the meeting days of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee relative to market expectations embedded in futures contracts on the 3-month LIBOR during the period June 1999- December 2009. We report definitive evidence that these shocks are transmitted to the cross-section of liquidity-sorted portfolios, with most liquid stocks playing a very active role. Our results emphatically document that the shocks-returns relationship has reversed its sign during the recent financial crisis; the standard inverse relationship between interest rate surprises and portfolios’ returns before the crisis has turned into positive during the crisis. This finding confirms the inability of interest rate cuts to boost returns in the shortrun during the crisis, because these were perceived by market participants as a signal of a deteriorating economic outlook.

Pilot HIA of European Employment Strategy in Ireland

This pilot Health Impact Assessment (HIA) exercise was conducted as part of the ‘Policy Health Impact Assessment for the European Union’, commissioned by the European Commission ’s Directorate Generale Health and Consumer Protection (DG Sanco). The project is coordinated by Liverpool University and the research partners are from Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. The aim of the European project is to develop a HIA methodology for assessing the health impacts of EU policies and activities. The purpose of the pilot HIA in Ireland was to test the methodology produced in the first phase of the project in 2002. The policy chosen for assessment was the European Employment Strategy. The Irish pilot used a range of methods suggested in the draft methodology but concentrated particularly on the participatory aspects of HIA. A key stakeholder group with knowledge of employment (including decision makers in labour market policy) was established to provide expert advice and support. Other methods used included policy analysis, information gathering from key informants, community profiling (including demographic and labour force data), data analysis, literature review, the production of a report and the development of recommendations.
