The Fourier transform Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of the Ceramide 3 (CER3) have been recorded in the regions 200-3500 cm(-1) and 680-4000 cm(-1), respectively. We have calculated the equilibrium geometry, harmonic vibrational wavenumbers, electrostatic potential surfaces, absolute Raman scattering activities and IR absorption intensities by the density functional theory with B3LYP functionals having extended basis set 6-311G. This work is undertaken to study the vibrational spectra of CER3 completely and to identify the various normal modes with better wavenumber accuracy. Good consistency is found between the calculated results and experimental data for the IR and Raman spectra.

The synthesis, molecular structure, DNA binding and nuclease activity of Cu4O4 open-cubane tetranuclear copper(II) complex with 3-2-(ethyl amino)ethyl]imino]-2-butanoneoxime (HL) are reported for the first time. The neutral tetranuclear Cu4L4(ClO4)(4)] complex crystallizes in tetragonal space group P (4) over bar2(1)c with the unit cell parameters; a = 13.798(4) angstrom, b = 13.798(4) angstrom, c = 14.119(6) angstrom, V = 2688(16) angstrom(3), Z = 8, R = 0.0636. Symmetrically equivalent copper atoms exhibit a CuN3O3 elongated distorted octahedral coordination environment, with three nitrogen atoms of the L ligand and one oxime-oxygen atom of second L ligand at equatorial positions, one oxime-oxygen atom of the third L ligand and perchlorate oxygen at axial positions. The complex shows quasireversible cyclic voltammetric response at 0.805 V (Delta E-p = 277 mV) at 100 mV s (1) in DMF for the Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple. The binding study of the complex with calf-thymus DNA has been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The complex shows strong nuclease activity on stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and marginal nuclease activity in the presence of reducing agent (dithiothreitol). In this paper, the synthesis, characterization and glutathione peroxidase and peroxynitrite scavenging activities of a series of stable spirodiazaselenuranes are described. The spiro compounds were synthesized in good yields by oxidative cyclization of diaryl selenides bearing amide moieties. All the selenides and spiro derivatives were characterized by H-1, C-13 and Se-77 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectral techniques and the structures of some of the spirodiazaselenuranes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structures reveal that the selenium atom occupies the center of a distorted trigonal bipyramid core with two nitrogen atoms occupying the apical positions and two carbon atoms and the selenium lone pair occupying the equatorial positions. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the spirocyclization occurs via the formation of selenoxide intermediates. The new compounds were evaluated for their glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimetic activity by using H2O2 as a substrate and glutathione (GSH) as a co-substrate. It was found that the substituents attached to the nitrogen atom of the selenazole ring have a significant effect on the GPx activity. While the introduction of electron withdrawing groups such as -Cl, -Br etc. to the phenyl ring decreases the activity, the introduction of electron donating groups such as -OH, -OMe significantly enhances the GPx activity of both diaryl selenides and spirodiazaselenuranes. In addition to GPx activity, the selenides and spiro derivatives were studied for their ability to inhibit peroxynitrite (PN)-mediated nitration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123. These studies indicate that the diarylselenides effectively inhibit the PN-mediated nitration and oxidation reactions by reacting with PN to produce the corresponding spirodiazaselenuranes.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

Four dinuclear bis(mu-Cl) bridged copper(II) complexes, Cu-2(mu-Cl)(2)(L-X)(2)](ClO4)(2) (L-X = N,N-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)-methyl]benzylamine with X = H(1), OMe(2), Me(3) and Cl(4)), have been synthesized and characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. In these complexes, each copper(II) center is penta-coordinated with square-pyramidal geometry. In addition to the tridentate L-X ligand, a chloride ion occupies the last position of the square plane. This chloride ion is also bonded to the neighboring Cu(II) site in its axial position forming an SP-I dinuclear Cu(II) unit that exhibits small intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions and supported by DFT calculations. The complexes 1-3 exhibit methylmonooxygenase (pMMO) behaviour and oxidise 4-tert-butylcatechol (4-TBCH2) with molecular oxygen in MeOH or MeCN to 4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (4-TBQ), 5-methoxy-4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (5-MeO-4-TBQ) as the major products along with 6,6'-Bu-t-biphenyl-3,4,3',4'-tetraol and others as minor products. These are further confirmed by ESI- and FAB-mass analyses. A tentative catalytic cycle has been framed based on the mass spectral analysis of the products and DFT calculations on individual intermediates that are energetically feasible.

ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTIONAL INORGANIC NANOSTRUCTURED OXIDES FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE AND SENSING. We demonstrate here certain examples of multifunctional nanostructured oxidematerials for biotechnological and environmental applications.Various in-house synthesized homogeneous nanostructured viz.mesoporous and nanotubes silica and titania have been employed for controlled drug delivery and electrochemical biosensing applications. Confinement of macromolecules such as proteins studied via electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic methods showed no detrimental effect on native protein structure and function, thus suggesting effective utility of oxide nanostructures as bio-encapsulators. Multi-functionalitywas demonstrated via employing similar nanostructures for sensing organic water pollutants e.g. textile dyes.

Substitution plays an important role in determining the triplet state reactivity. In this paper, we have studied the effect of chlorine substitution on the triplet state structure and the reactivity of thioxanthone (TX). We have employed time-resolved resonance Raman technique to understand the structure of the lowest triplet excited state of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX). The experimental findings have been corroborated with the computational results using density functional theory. Akin to the parent compound (TX), coexistence of two lowest triplet states has been observed in case of CTX, which has been substantiated using resonant probe wavelength dependence study. The relative contribution of 3n-pi* to 3 pi-pi* to the equilibrated triplet state has been found to be more for CTX compared to TX suggesting increase in the triplet state reactivity after the substitution. The above observation has been further supported by the flash photolysis experiments. Copyright (C) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Three new compounds of bismuth, C4N2H10]center dotBi(C7H4NO4)(C7H3NO4)]center dot H2O, I, Bi(C5H3N2O4) (C5H2N2O4)], II, and Bi(mu(2)-OH)(C7H3NO4)], III, have been prepared by the reaction between bismuth nitrate and heterocyclic aromatic dicarboxylic acids, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid, and 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, respectively, under hydrothermal conditions. The structures of all the compounds have linkages between Bi2O2 and the corresponding dicarboxylate forming a simple molecular unit in I, a bilayer arrangement in II, and a three-dimensional extended structure in III. The topological arrangement of the nodal building units in the structures indicates that a brucite-related layer (II) and fluorite-related arrangement (III) can be realized in these structures. By utilizing the secondary interactions, one can correlate the structure of III to a Kagome-related one. The observation of such classical inorganic related structures in the bismuth carboxylates is noteworthy. Lewis acid catalytic studies on the formation of ketal suggest the possible participatory role of the lone pair of electrons. All the compounds are characterized employing elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, and thermal studies.

A series of new BODIPYs (4-9) with bulky meso-trimethylsilylphenyl substitution were synthesized. The effect of the substituent's position on the emission properties of the BODIPYs was investigated in detail both in solution and solid state. The new BODIPYs exhibit emission in single crystals and in thin films. The logical increment of steric crowding in the compounds resulted in a periodic change in their conformational flexibility as evident from their F-19 NMR spectra, which in turn led to an increase of fluorescence in solution, thin films and single crystals.

Thyroid hormones are essential for the development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. They regulate protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism. In this Account, we discuss the synthesis, structure, and mechanism of action of thyroid hormones and their analogues. The prohormone thyroxine (14) is synthesized on thyroglobulin by thyroid peroxidase (TPO), a heme enzyme that uses iodide and hydrogen peroxide to perform iodination and phenolic coupling reactions. The monodeiodination of T4 to 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (13) by selenium-containing deiodinases (ID-1, ID-2) is a key step in the activation of thyroid hormones. The type 3 deiodinase (ID-3) catalyzes the deactivation of thyroid hormone in a process that removes iodine selectively from the tyrosyl ring of T4 to produce 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (rT3). Several physiological and pathological stimuli influence thyroid hormone synthesis. The overproduction of thyroid hormones leads to hyperthyroidism, which is treated by antithyroid drugs that either inhibit the thyroid hormone biosynthesis and/or decrease the conversion of T4 to T3. Antithyroid drugs are thiourea-based compounds, which indude propylthiouracil (PTU), methimazole (MM I), and carbimazole (CBZ). The thyroid gland actively concentrates these heterocyclic compounds against a concentration gradient Recently, the selenium analogues of PTU, MMI, and CBZ attracted significant attention because the selenium moiety in these compounds has a higher nucleophilicity than that of the sulfur moiety. Researchers have developed new methods for the synthesis of the selenium compounds. Several experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the selone (C=Se) in the selenium analogues is more polarized than the thione (C=S) in the sulfur compounds, and the selones exist predominantly in their zwitterionic forms. Although the thionamide-based antithyroid drugs have been used for almost 70 years, the mechanism of their action is not completely understood. Most investigations have revealed that MMI and PTU irreversibly inhibit TPO. PTU, MTU, and their selenium analogues also inhibit ID-1, most likely by reacting with the selenenyl iodide intermediate. The good ID-1 inhibitory activity of Pill and its analogues can be ascribed to the presence of the -N(H)-C(=O)- functionality that can form hydrogen bonds with nearby amino add residues in the selenenyl sulfide state. In addition to the TPO and ID-1 inhibition, the selenium analogues are very good antioxidants. In the presence of cellular reducing agents such as GSH, these compounds catalytically reduce hydrogen peroxide. They can also efficiently scavenge peroxynitrite, a potent biological oxidant and nitrating agent.

Three highly stable, hexacoordinated nonoxidovanadium(IV), V-IV(L)(2), complexes (1-3) have been isolated and structurally characterized with tridentate aroylhydrazonates containing ONO donor atoms. All the complexes are stable in the open air in the solid state as well as in solution, a phenomenon rarely observed in nonoxidovanadium(IV) complexes. The complexes have good solubility in organic solvents, permitting electrochemical and various spectroscopic investigations. The existence of nonoxidovanadium(IV) complexes was confirmed by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, EPR, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. X-ray crystallography showed the N3O3 donor set to define a trigonal prismatic geometry in each case. All the complexes show in vitro insulin mimetic activity against insulin responsive L6 myoblast cells, with complex 3 being the most potent, which is comparable to insulin at the complex concentration of 4 mu M, while the others have moderate insulin mimetic activity. In addition, the in vitro antiproliferative activity of complexes 1-3 against the He La cell line was assayed. The cytotoxicity of the complexes is affected by the various functional groups attached to the bezoylhydrazone derivative and 2 showed considerable antiproliferative activity compared to the most commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs.

Two new anionic inorganic-organic hybrid compounds H3O]Mn-3(mu(3)-OH)(C14H8O6S)(3)(H2O)](DMF)(5), I, and H3O](2)Mn-7(mu(3)-OH)(4)(C14H8O6S)(6)(H2O)(4)](H2O)(2)(DMF)(8), II have been prepared by employing mild solvothennal methods. Both the compounds have three-dimensionally extended structures formed by Mn-6 and Mn-7 clusters, respectively. The connectivity between Mn-6 and Mn-7 clusters and 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid anions (SDBA(2-)) results in a six connected pcu network in I and an eight connected bcu network in II. The presence of hydronium ion (H-3(O+)) along with the solvent molecules in the channels of both the compounds suggested proton conduction in the solids. Proton conductivity studies gave values of similar to 3 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1) 98% relative humidity in both the compounds. The high activation energies indicate a vehicle mechanism in the compounds I and II. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic behavior in both the compounds.

The magnetic structure and properties of sodium iron fluorophosphate Na2FePO4F (space group Pbcn), a cathode material for rechargeable batteries, were studied using magnetometry and neutron powder diffraction. The material, which can be described as a quasi-layered structure with zigzag Fe-octahedral chains, develops a long-range antiferromagnetic order below similar to 3.4 K. The magnetic structure is rationalized as a super-exchange-driven ferromagnetic ordering of chains running along the a-axis, coupled antiferromagnetically by super-super-exchange via phosphate groups along the c-axis, with ordering along the b-axis likely due to the contribution of dipole dipole interactions.
