In the paper the kinetic effects of La3+ and Ce4+ on the growth of Microcystis and the accumulation kinetics of Microcystis in the single and combined systems of La3+ and Ce4+ were studied. The mechanism of the effects of La3+ and Ce4+ on the growth of Microcystis and their accumulation kinetics were also discussed. In the single system, La3+ stimulated the growth of Microcystis at initial concentrations below 2 mg / 1, but inhibited it above 2 mg / 1. Ce4+ accelerated the growth of Microcystis at initial concentrations below 0.2 mg / 1 and inhibited at above 0.2 mg /l. Furthermore, the stimulation weakened with the increase of initial concentrations of La3+ and Ce4+. In the combined system, the growth of Microcystis was accelerated in the over all cases. In the single system, the amount of La3+ and Ce4+ uptake was more at higher initial concentrations than at lower ones. At the same initial concentrations, La3+ and Ce4+ uptake in the combined system was less than that in the single system. The kinetic process of La3+ and Ce4+ adsorpted by Microcystis can be explained with the second order kinetics adsorption model.

We have investigated MOCVD growth of InN oil sapphire with and without a GaN buffer between 490 and 520 degrees C. The buffer significantly improves the surface morphological uniformity and electrical properties of InN epilayers. Characterization of the as-grown epilayers with the buffer reveals that kinetics-limited islands are formed at lower temperatures, whereas islands with equilibrium shape are obtained at higher temperatures. Below 520 degrees C, increasing temperature improves structural quality but degrades electrical properties. Hall data from this study Suggest that V-N-related defects/impurities are the possible donor species and compensation varies with charged dislocation acceptors. We believe that reducing carrier concentration and dislocation density is effective to increase the Hall mobility of InN. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aluminum nitride (AIN) thin films were deposited on Si (111) substrates by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition system. The effects of the V/III ratios on the film structure and surface morphology were systematically studied. The chemical states and vibration modes of AIN films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The optical absorption property of the AIN films, characterized by ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrophotometer, exhibited a sharp absorption near the wavelength of 206 mm. The AIN (002) preferential orientation growth was obtained at the V/III ratio of 10,000 and the preferential growth mechanism is presented in this paper according to the thermodynamics and kinetics process of the AIN growth.

Performing an event-based continuous kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the modulated effect induced by the dislocation on the substrate to the growth of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The relative positions between the QDs and the dislocations are studied. The stress effects to the growth of the QDs are considered in simulation. The simulation results are compared with the experiment and the agreement between them indicates that this simulation is useful to study the growth mode and the atomic kinetics during the growth of the semiconductor QDs. In situ doping for growth of n-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterojuction bipolar transistor (HBT) structural materials in Si gas source molecular beam epitaxy is investigated. We studied high n-type doping kinetics in Si growth using disilane and phosphine, and p-type doping in SiGe growth using disilane, soild-Ge, and diborane with an emphasis on the effect of Ge on B incorporation. Based on these results, in situ growth of n-p-n Si/SiGe/Si HBT device structure is demonstrated with designed structural and carrier profiles, as verified from characterizations by X-ray diffraction, and spreading resistance profiling analysis. A phenomenological model is proposed to explain quantitatively the interesting compositional dependence on the Ge incorporation rate during low-temperature growth of Si1-xGex by disilane and solid-Ge molecular beam epitaxy, based on enhanced hydrogen desorption from Si sites due to the presence of Ge atoms. The hydrogen desorption rate constant for disilane on Si sites is fitted to an exponential function of Ge incorporation rate and a possible physical explanation is discussed. Simulated results are in excellent agreement with experimental data. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)02109-X].

GexSi1-x epilayers were grown at 700-900 degrees C by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition. GexSi1-x, Si and Ge growth rates as functions of GeH4 flow are considered separately to investigate how the growth of the epilayers is enhanced. Arrhenius plots of Si and Ge incorporation in the GexSi1-x growth show the activation energies associated with the growth rates are about 1.2 eV for silicon and 0.4 eV for germanium, indicating that Si growth is limited by surface kinetics and Ge growth is limited by mass transport. A model based on this idea is proposed and used to simulate the growth of GexSi1-x. The calculation and experiment are in good agreement. Growth rate and film composition increase monotonically with growth pressure; both observations are explained by the model.

A numerical model that combines mass transport and surface kinetics was applied, for the first time, to the chemical vapor epitaxy of GexSi1-x. The temperature, velocity and concentration fields were calculated from the conservation equations for energy, momentum and species coupled with the boundary conditions on the growth surface which were determined by surface kinetics. The deposition rates of Si and Ge were assumed to be limited, respectively, by surface kinetics and mass transport. A theoretical relation between the initial conditions and the Ge composition in the solid was established. The calculated growth rate as well as the Ge composition in the solid and its dependence on growth temperature agree well with experimental data.

A phenol-degrading. microorganism, Alcaligenes faecalis, was used to study the substrate interactions during cell growth on phenol and m-cresol dual substrates. Both phenol and m-cresol could be utilized by the bacteria as,the sole carbon and energy sources. When cells grew on the mixture of phenol and m-cresol, strong substrate interactions were observed. m-Cresol inhibited the degradation of phenol, on the other hand, phenol also inhibited the utilization of m-cresol, the overall cell growth rate was the co-action of phenol and m-cresol. In addition, the cell growth and substrate degradation kinetics of phenol, m-cresol as single and mixed substrates for A. faecalis in batch cultures were also investigated over a wide range of initial phenol concentrations (10-1400 mg L-1) and initial m-cresol concentrations (5-200 mg L-1). The single-substrate kinetics was described well using the Haldane-type kinetic models, with model constants of it mu(m1) = 0.15 h(-1), K-S1 = 2.22 mg L-1 and K-i1 = 245.37 mg L-1 for cell growth on phenol and mu(m2) = 0.0782 h(-1), K-S2 = 1.30 mg L-1 and K-i2 = 71.77 mgL(-1), K-i2' = 5480 (mg L-1)(2) for cell growth on m-cresol. Proposed cell growth kinetic model was used to characterize the substrates interactions in the dual substrates system, the obtained parameters representing interactions between phenol and m-cresol were, K = 1.8 x 10(-6), M = 5.5 x 10(-5), Q = 6.7 x 10(-4). The results received in the experiments demonstrated that these models adequately described the dynamic behaviors of phenol and m-cresol as single and mixed substrates by the strain of A. faecalis.

Crystallization kinetics of syndiotactic polypropylene ( sPP) was observed by light attenuation measurements. The initial stages of temperature dependent sPP crystallization fall in the range of Rayleigh scattering and Rayleigh-Debye-Gans scattering. Initial time and growth time of crystallization were obtained, and the trend of crystallization temperature dependent linear attenuation coefficient on the radius and the index of the refraction of the spherulite were evaluated.

The transition of lamellar crystal orientation from flat-on to edge-on in ultrathin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) via solvent vapor (toluene) treatment Was investigated. When the as-prepared film was treated in saturated solvent vapor, breakout crystals could form quickly, and then they transformed from square single crystals (flat-on lamellae) to dendrites and finally to nanowire crystals (edge-on lamellae). Initially, heterogeneous nucleation tit the polymer/substrate interface dominated the structure evolution, leading to flat-on lamellar crystals orientation. And the transition from faceted habits to dendrites indicated a transition of underlying mechanism from nucleation-controlled to diffusion-limited growth. As the solvent molecules gradually diffused into the polymer/substrate interface, it will subsequently weaken the polymer-substrate interaction.

Non-isothermal crystallisation kinetics of a polyamide 6/mesoporous silica nanocomposite (PA6-MS) has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different cooling rates. Mandelkern, Jeziorny-Ziabicki and Ozawa methods were applied to describe this crystallisation process. The analyses show that the mesoporous silica particles act as nucleating agents in the composite and that the Avrami exponent n varies from 3.0 to 4.6. The addition of mesoporous silica influenced the mechanism of nucleation and the growth of polyamide 6 (PA6) crystallites.

In this paper, the isothermal crystallization kinetics of polypropylene (iPP) during self-nucleation was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The iPP was melted at 438 K and then isothermally crystallized in the range of temperature between 421 and 425 K. The mechanism of nucleation and growth of iPP was discussed. The Avrami equation was applied to analyzing the process of isothermal crystallization of iPP from the melt. The average value of Avrami exponent is n=3.01, suggesting that the primary crystallization maybe corresponds to three-dimensional spherulitic growth. The K-g value obtained from Lauritzen-Hoffman equation is 1.128 X 10(5) K-2, which suggests that crystallization species should be regime I. The decrease of crystallization active energy and chain folding work indicates that the self-nucleation can greatly promote the overall crystallization of iPP.
