The impact of particle emissions by biomass burning is increasing throughout the world. We explored the toxicity of particulate matter produced by sugar cane burning and compared these effects with equivalent mass of traffic-derived particles. For this purpose, BALB/c mice received a single intranasal instillation of either distilled water (C) or total suspended particles (15 mu g) from an urban area (SP group) or biomass burning-derived particles (Bio group). Lung mechanical parameters (total, resistive and viscoelastic pressures, static elastance, and elastic component of viscoelasticity) and histology were analyzed 24h after instillation. Trace elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) metabolites of the two sources of particles were determined. All mechanical parameters increased similarly in both pollution groups compared with control, except airway resistive pressure, which increased only in Bio. Both exposed groups showed significantly higher fraction area of alveolar collapse, and influx of polymorphonuclear cells in lung parenchyma than C. The composition analysis of total suspended particles showed higher concentrations of PAHs and lower concentration of metals in traffic than in biomass burning-derived particles. In conclusion, we demonstrated that a single low dose of ambient particles, produced by traffic and sugar cane burning, induced significant alterations in pulmonary mechanics and lung histology in mice. Parenchymal changes were similar after exposure to both particle sources, whereas airway mechanics was more affected by biomass-derived particles. Our results indicate that biomass particles were at least as toxic as those produced by traffic. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This study investigated the impact of three different oral nutritional support regimens on lung mechanics and remodelling in young undernourished Wistar rats. In the nutritionally deprived group, rats received one-third of their usual daily food consumption for 4 weeks. Undernourished rats were divided into three groups receiving a balanced, glutamine-supplemented, or long-chain triglyceride-supplemented diet for 4 weeks. In the two control groups, rats received food ad libitum for 4 (C4) or 8 weeks. Lung viscoelastic pressure and static elastance were higher in undernourished compared to C4 rats. After refeeding, lung mechanical data remained altered except for the glutamine-supplemented group. Undernutrition led to a reduced amount of elastic and collagen fibres in the alveolar septa. Elastic fibre content returned to control with balanced and glutamine-supplemented diets, but increased with long-chain triglyceride-supplemented diet. The amount of collagen fibre augmented independent of nutritional support. In conclusion, glutamine-supplemented diet is better at reducing morphofunctional changes than other diets after 4 weeks of refeeding. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Poly(ethylene glycol) decorated poly( methyl methacrylate) particles were synthesized by means of emulsion polymerization using poly(ethylene glycol) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20) as surfactant. PMMA/PEG particles presented mean diameter (195 +/- 15) nm, indicating narrow size distribution. The adsorption behavior of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and concanavalin A (ConA) onto PMMA/PEG particles was investigated by means of spectrophotometry. Adsorption isotherms obtained for BSA onto PMMA/PEG particles fitted well sigmoidal function, which is typical for multilayer adsorption. Con A adsorbed irreversibly onto PMMA/PEG particles. The efficiency of ConA covered particles to induce dengue virus quick agglutination was evaluated. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Development of the foetal respiratory system includes both pulmonary growth and maturation. In human medicine, a higher incidence of respiratory distress is reported in newborn males. This study aimed to identify different phases of canine foetal lung maturation throughout pregnancy, to determine the stage of pregnancy in which surfactant production begins and to compare pulmonary development of male and female foetuses. Pregnant bitches (34) were subjected to elective ovariohysterectomy and allocated into four groups, according to the stage of pregnancy: 30-40 days of pregnancy (n = 10), 41-50 days (n = 10), 51-60 days (n = 10) and bitches in the first stage of parturition (n = 4). Foetal lungs were histologically processed and evaluated by optical microscopy. The pseudoglandular phase was identified between the 35th day and 46th day of gestation; the onset of canalicular and saccular periods was observed, respectively, from the 48th day and 60th day of pregnancy. Lungs from foetuses at term were in the saccular phase; thus, the development into the alveolar period occurs in the neonatal period. The histological analyses revealed that respiratory tract development is centrifugal, from upper to lower airways. Therefore, it is possible to identify distinct development periods in different portions of the same organ. In conclusion, the saccular phase of lung development begins around 57 and 60 days of pregnancy, the period in which surfactant production is believed to occur. Male and female foetuses present similar pulmonary development from early pregnancy until parturition.

This study evaluated the effect of 980-nm diode laser at different parameters on root canal dentin permeability associated with different irrigants. Seventy-five canines were sectioned at 15 mm from the apex, prepared mechanically up to #40 .02 instrument, and irrigated with 2 mL distilled water. Final irrigation (10 mL) was used as follows: (1) distilled water; (2) 1% NaOCl; (3) 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid + a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (EDTAC). Laser was applied at 1.5 or 3.0 W as either continuous wave or pulsed wave (100 Hz). The teeth were then processed histochemically, the percentage of copper ion penetration into the dentin of the canal walls was counted, and the data were analyzed statistically with the Tukey-Kramer test (alpha < .01). When laser was associated with water, an increase in permeability was found, whereas permeability decreased when associated with EDTAC. Dentin permeability after laser irradiation was directly dependent on the solution used for final irrigation.

In studying the penetration of water-soluble surfactants into water-insoluble monolayers the main theoretical problem is to find a relationship that would enable the amount of surfactant that has entered the monolayer to be calculated from a set of equilibrium surface pressure-area isotherms. Despite many attempts, no current theory gives satisfactory results when applied to experimental data (Langmuir 14 (1998) 2148). One possible reason is that equilibrium had not been established when the surface pressure-area curves were measured. The three experiments reported here suggest that equilibrium is extremely difficult to establish in such systems when the area is low or the surface pressure is high. The essence of these experiments is to try to reach the same final condition by two different routes. In the first route, the one nearly always used in equilibrium penetration measurements, the surfactant is injected under the expanded monolayer, which is then slowly compressed in steps, with time allowed at each step for a steady surface pressure to be attained. In the second procedure, the monolayer is first compressed to a high surface pressure and the surfactant then injected. A stepped expansion isotherm may then be observed. Surface pressure-area per monolayer molecule isotherms, reflection spectra, and slow neutron reflectivity data all show the same pattern: if the surfactant was allowed to penetrate while the monolayer was in an expanded state, it was not completely removed when the monolayer was compressed; but if the monolayer was in a highly compressed state when exposed to the surfactant little penetration took place until the film was expanded. There thus appear to be very large energy barriers to the ejection of surfactant from a compressed monolayer and to the penetration of surfactant into a compressed monolayer. Although these experiments have some limitations, it now seems likely that at least some of the penetration data used in evaluating the various thermodynamic treatments of equilibrium penetration were not equilibrium data. Alumina intercalated laponite (Al-laponite) was prepared with a polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfactant and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the carbon dioxide reforming reaction with methane to synthesis gas. The effects of the supports of intercalated laponite and catalyst preparation on catalytic activity, stability and carbon deposition were investigated for the above reforming reaction. We found that the pore structure of the Al-laponite supports can be tailored with the surfactant and the catalyst with well-developed porosity exhibited higher catalytic activity and a longer time of catalyst stability. Composite clay nanostructures (CCNs) were observed in intercalating Laponite clay with alumina in the presence of alkyl polyether surfactants which contain hydrophobic alkyl chains and ether groups. Such nanostructured clays are highly porous solids consisting of randomly orientated clay platelets intercalated with alumina nanoparticles. The pores in the product solids are larger than the dimension of the surfactant molecules, ranging from 2 to 10 nm. This suggests that the micelles of the surfactant molecules, rather than the molecules, act as templates in the synthesis. Interestingly, it is found that the size of the framework pores was directly proportional to the amount of the surfactants in terms of moles, but shows no evident dependence on the size of the surfactant molecules. Broad pore size distributions were observed for the product CCNs. This study demonstrates that introducing surfactants in the pillaring process of clays is a powerful strategy for tailoring the pore structures of nanoporous clays. With this new technique, it is possible to design and engineer such composite clay nanostructures with desired pore and surface properties by the proper choice of surfactant amounts and preparation conditions.

Silica xerogels were prepared by a sol-gel process catalyzed by acid with tetraethylorthosilicate, and using an organic covalent ligand template (methyltriethoxysilane) or a noncovalent template C6 surfactant (triethylhexylammonium bromide). The influence of hydrotreatment on the structure of templated xerogels is examined in terms of surface area, micropore volume, average pore size, and pore size distribution, and compared against a blank xerogel (nontemplated). The role of surface functional groups was evaluated using Si-29 nuclear magnetic resonance. The structural integrity of the xerogel was maintained to a large extent in samples that had a high contribution of Q(4) species (siloxane groups). Xerogel matrix densification occurred when there was a large concentration of Q(3) and Q(2) species (silanol groups), which also were responsible for increased hydrophilicity. The templated xerogels resulted in up to a 25% concentration of methyl functional groups (T-3 and T-2 species), leading to hydrophobic xerogels. The best results in terms of structural integrity and hydrophobicity were obtained with templated xerogels prepared with the C6 surfactant. The results in this study suggest that surfactant-enhanced condensation reactions lead to structures with a high contribution of Q(4) groups, which are not susceptible to water attack, but are strong enough to oppose matrix densification during rehydration.

Titania sol-pillared clay (TiO2 PILC) and silica-titania sol-pillared clay (SiO2-TiO2 PILC) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. Supercritical drying (SCD) and treatment with quaternary ammonium surfactants were used to tailor the pore structure of the resulting clay. It was found that SCD approach increased the external surface area of the PILCs dramatically and that treatment with surfactants could be used to tailor pore size because the mesopore formation in the galleries between the clay layers follows the templating mechanism as observed in the synthesis of MCM-41 materials. Highly mesoporous solids were thus obtained. In calcined TiO2 PILC, ultrafine crystallites in anatase phase, which are active for photocatalytic oxidation of organics, were observed. In SiO2-TiO2 PILCs and their derivatives, titanium was highly dispersed in the matrix of silica and no crystal phase was observed. The highly dispersed titanium sites are good catalytic centers for selective oxidation of organic compounds. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

Langmuir monolayer films of the tetracationic porphyrin tetrakis(octadecyl-4-pyridin ium)porphyrinatozinc(II) bromide on various salt containing subphases were analyzed using surface pressure-area isotherms and X-ray reflectivity. The use of these complementary techniques showed that the porphyrin molecules undergo changes in conformation upon compression. Two main phases were identified, one in which the porphyrin moiety is parallel to the subphase and one in which the porphyrin moiety is tilted out of the plane. The addition of different salts into the subphase brought about changes in film behaviour, which are explained in terms of a lyotropic series. The formation of CdS nanoparticles by reacting mixed Langmuir-Blodgett films of arachidic acid and either octadecylamine or dimethyldioctadecylammonium nitrate on a cadmium-containing subphase with hydrogen sulfide gas has resulted in the identification of a number of structural changes, observed using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. In the case of octadecylamine, the structure after reaction is a hexagonal close-packed array of surfactant-stabilized nanoclusters, with a lattice constant of a = 17.65 Angstrom. In both octadecylamine and dimethyldioctadecylammonium nitrate films, the presence of a unit cell tilted at 38degrees to the plane of the substrate was found. Despite these changes, the average nanoparticle size was unaffected by the addition of either second component to the film.

Quaternary ammonium surfactants were used to control the pore structure of bentonite intercalated with a mixed hydro-sol of silicon and titanium. Porous clay heterostructures of alumina and laponite were prepared in the presence of polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfactants. Participation of the surfactants in the synthesis results in significant changes in the structure of porous clay products. Surfactants are involved in different mechanisms, In the case of bentonite, the mean size of the framework pores was directly proportional to the chain length of the quaternary ammonium surfactants. This indicates a molecular templating mechanism, similar to that observed in the synthesis of MCM41. However, in the case of laponite, the size and volume of the mesopores were related to the amount of PEO surfactants used. By using an appropriate surfactant, we can obtain highly porous clays with various pore structures. Introducing surfactants during intercalation is an efficient strategy for the molecular engineering of porous clay adsorbents and catalysts. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
