Theoretical investigation of CoSi2/Si1-xGex detectors: Influence of a Si tunneling barrier on the electro-optical characteristics

We present a theoretical investigation of the influence of a non-reacted Si layer on the transport and optical properties of CoSi2/Si1-xGex Schottky barrier diodes grown from Co/Si/Si1-xGex systems. The presence of this layer reduces the effect of the lowering of the Schottky barrier height which would be expected in a CoSi2/Si1-xGex. However, due to the small thickness of this Si layer, the charge carriers are able to tunnel through it. This tunneling process allows for a significant lowering of the Schottky barrier height and therefore an extension of the detection regime into the infrared. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

500 fs wideband tunable fiber laser mode-locked by nanotubes

Sub-picosecond tunable ultrafast lasers are important tools for many applications. Here we present an ultrafast tunable fiber laser mode-locked by a nanotube based saturable absorber. The laser outputs ∼500fs pulses over a 33 nm range at 1.5μm. This outperforms the current achievable pulse duration from tunable nanotube mode-locked lasers. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. On the behaviour of flexible retaining walls under seismic actions

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the behaviour of embedded retaining walls under seismic actions. Nine centrifuge tests were carried out on reduced-scale models of pairs of retaining walls in dry sand, either cantilevered or with one level of props near the top. The experimental data indicate that, for maximum accelerations that are smaller than the critical limit equilibrium value, the retaining walls experience significant permanent displacements under increasing structural loads, whereas for larger accelerations the walls rotate under constant internal forces. The critical acceleration at which the walls start to rotate increases with increasing maximum acceleration. No significant displacements are measured if the current earthquake is less severe than earthquakes previously experienced by the wall. The increase of critical acceleration is explained in terms of redistribution of earth pressures and progressive mobilisation of the passive strength in front of the wall. The experimental data for cantilevered retaining walls indicate that the permanent displacements of the wall can be reasonably predicted adopting a Newmark-type calculation with a critical acceleration that is a fraction of the limit equilibrium value.

Comparison of the coherence properties of superradiance and laser emission in semiconductor structures

The coherence properties of a transient electron-hole state developing during superradiance emission in semiconductor laser structures have been studied experimentally using a Michelson interferometer and Young's classic double-slit configuration. The results demonstrate that, in the lasers studied, the first-order correlation function, which quantifies spatial coherence, approaches unity for superradiant emission and is 0.2-0.5 for laser emission. The supercoherence is due to long-range ordering upon the superradiant phase transition. © 2012 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

Multi-scale permeability of murine bone measured by nanoindentation

The determination of lacunar-canalicular permeability is essential to understand the mechano-transduction mechanism of bone. Murine models are widely used to investigate skeletal growth and regulation, but the value of lacunar-canalicular permeability is still unclear. To address this question, a poroelastic analysis based on nanoindentation data was used to calculate the lacunar-canalicular permeability of wild type C57BL/6 mice of 12 months. Cross-sections of three tibiae were indented using spherical fluid cell indenter tips of two sizes. Results suggest that the value of lacunar-canalicular intrinsic permeability of B6 female murine tibia is in the order of 10 -24 m2. The distribution of the values of intrinsic permeability suggests that with larger contact sizes, nanoindentation alone is capable of capturing the multi-scale permeability of bone. Multi-scale permeability of bone measured by nanoindentation will lead to a better understanding of the role of fluid flow in mechano-transduction. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.
