Warrick and Hussen developed in the nineties of the last century a method to scale Richards' equation (RE) for similar soils. In this paper, new scaled solutions are added to the method of Warrick and Hussen considering a wider range of soils regardless of their dissimilarity. Gardner-Kozeny hydraulic functions are adopted instead of Brooks-Corey functions used originally by Warrick and Hussen. These functions allow to reduce the dependence of the scaled RE on the soil properties. To evaluate the proposed method (PM), the scaled RE was solved numerically using a finite difference method with a fully implicit scheme. Three cases were considered: constant-head infiltration, constant-flux infiltration, and drainage of an initially uniform wet soil. The results for five texturally different soils ranging from sand to clay (adopted from the literature) showed that the scaled solutions were invariant to a satisfactory degree. However, slight deviations were observed mainly for the sandy soil. Moreover, the scaled solutions deviated when the soil profile was initially wet in the infiltration case or when deeply wet in the drainage condition. Based on the PM, a Philip-type model was also developed to approximate RE solutions for the constant-head infiltration. The model showed a good agreement with the scaled RE for the same range of soils and conditions, however only for Gardner-Kozeny soils. Such a procedure reduces numerical calculations and provides additional opportunities for solving the highly nonlinear RE for unsaturated water flow in soils. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This work presents numerical simulations of two fluid flow problems involving moving free surfaces: the impacting drop and fluid jet buckling. The viscoelastic model used in these simulations is the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. To validate the code, numerical predictions of the drop impact problem for Newtonian and Oldroyd-B fluids are presented and compared with other methods. In particular, a benchmark on numerical simulations for a XPP drop impacting on a rigid plate is performed for a wide range of the relevant parameters. Finally, to provide an additional application of free surface flows of XPP fluids, the viscous jet buckling problem is simulated and discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The goal of this thesis is the application of an opto-electronic numerical simulation to heterojunction silicon solar cells featuring an all back contact architecture (Interdigitated Back Contact Hetero-Junction IBC-HJ). The studied structure exhibits both metal contacts, emitter and base, at the back surface of the cell with the objective to reduce the optical losses due to the shadowing by front contact of conventional photovoltaic devices. Overall, IBC-HJ are promising low-cost alternatives to monocrystalline wafer-based solar cells featuring front and back contact schemes, in fact, for IBC-HJ the high concentration doping diffusions are replaced by low-temperature deposition processes of thin amorphous silicon layers. Furthermore, another advantage of IBC solar cells with reference to conventional architectures is the possibility to enable a low-cost assembling of photovoltaic modules, being all contacts on the same side. A preliminary extensive literature survey has been helpful to highlight the specific critical aspects of IBC-HJ solar cells as well as the state-of-the-art of their modeling, processing and performance of practical devices. In order to perform the analysis of IBC-HJ devices, a two-dimensional (2-D) numerical simulation flow has been set up. A commercial device simulator based on finite-difference method to solve numerically the whole set of equations governing the electrical transport in semiconductor materials (Sentuarus Device by Synopsys) has been adopted. The first activity carried out during this work has been the definition of a 2-D geometry corresponding to the simulation domain and the specification of the electrical and optical properties of materials. In order to calculate the main figures of merit of the investigated solar cells, the spatially resolved photon absorption rate map has been calculated by means of an optical simulator. Optical simulations have been performed by using two different methods depending upon the geometrical features of the front interface of the solar cell: the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the raytracing (RT). The first method allows to model light prop-agation by plane waves within one-dimensional spatial domains under the assumption of devices exhibiting stacks of parallel layers with planar interfaces. In addition, TMM is suitable for the simulation of thin multi-layer anti reflection coating layers for the reduction of the amount of reflected light at the front interface. Raytracing is required for three-dimensional optical simulations of upright pyramidal textured surfaces which are widely adopted to significantly reduce the reflection at the front surface. The optical generation profiles are interpolated onto the electrical grid adopted by the device simulator which solves the carriers transport equations coupled with Poisson and continuity equations in a self-consistent way. The main figures of merit are calculated by means of a postprocessing of the output data from device simulation. After the validation of the simulation methodology by means of comparison of the simulation result with literature data, the ultimate efficiency of the IBC-HJ architecture has been calculated. By accounting for all optical losses, IBC-HJ solar cells result in a theoretical maximum efficiency above 23.5% (without texturing at front interface) higher than that of both standard homojunction crystalline silicon (Homogeneous Emitter HE) and front contact heterojuction (Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin layer HIT) solar cells. However it is clear that the criticalities of this structure are mainly due to the defects density and to the poor carriers transport mobility in the amorphous silicon layers. Lastly, the influence of the most critical geometrical and physical parameters on the main figures of merit have been investigated by applying the numerical simulation tool set-up during the first part of the present thesis. Simulations have highlighted that carrier mobility and defects level in amorphous silicon may lead to a potentially significant reduction of the conversion efficiency.

The purpose of my PhD thesis has been to face the issue of retrieving a three dimensional attenuation model in volcanic areas. To this purpose, I first elaborated a robust strategy for the analysis of seismic data. This was done by performing several synthetic tests to assess the applicability of spectral ratio method to our purposes. The results of the tests allowed us to conclude that: 1) spectral ratio method gives reliable differential attenuation (dt*) measurements in smooth velocity models; 2) short signal time window has to be chosen to perform spectral analysis; 3) the frequency range over which to compute spectral ratios greatly affects dt* measurements. Furthermore, a refined approach for the application of spectral ratio method has been developed and tested. Through this procedure, the effects caused by heterogeneities of propagation medium on the seismic signals may be removed. The tested data analysis technique was applied to the real active seismic SERAPIS database. It provided a dataset of dt* measurements which was used to obtain a three dimensional attenuation model of the shallowest part of Campi Flegrei caldera. Then, a linearized, iterative, damped attenuation tomography technique has been tested and applied to the selected dataset. The tomography, with a resolution of 0.5 km in the horizontal directions and 0.25 km in the vertical direction, allowed to image important features in the off-shore part of Campi Flegrei caldera. High QP bodies are immersed in a high attenuation body (Qp=30). The latter is well correlated with low Vp and high Vp/Vs values and it is interpreted as a saturated marine and volcanic sediments layer. High Qp anomalies, instead, are interpreted as the effects either of cooled lava bodies or of a CO2 reservoir. A pseudo-circular high Qp anomaly was detected and interpreted as the buried rim of NYT caldera.

Wind power based generation has been rapidly growing world-wide during the recent past. In order to transmit large amounts of wind power over long distances, system planners may often add series compensation to existing transmission lines owing to several benefits such as improved steady-state power transfer limit, improved transient stability, and efficient utilization of transmission infrastructure. Application of series capacitors has posed resonant interaction concerns such as through subsynchronous resonance (SSR) with conventional turbine-generators. Wind turbine-generators may also be susceptible to such resonant interactions. However, not much information is available in literature and even engineering standards are yet to address these issues. The motivation problem for this research is based on an actual system switching event that resulted in undamped oscillations in a 345-kV series-compensated, typical ring-bus power system configuration. Based on time-domain ATP (Alternative Transients Program) modeling, simulations and analysis of system event records, the occurrence of subsynchronous interactions within the existing 345-kV series-compensated power system has been investigated. Effects of various small-signal and large-signal power system disturbances with both identical and non-identical wind turbine parameters (such as with a statistical-spread) has been evaluated. Effect of parameter variations on subsynchronous oscillations has been quantified using 3D-DFT plots and the oscillations have been identified as due to electrical self-excitation effects, rather than torsional interaction. Further, the generator no-load reactance and the rotor-side converter inner-loop controller gains have been identified as bearing maximum sensitivity to either damping or exacerbating the self-excited oscillations. A higher-order spectral analysis method based on modified Prony estimation has been successfully applied to the field records identifying dominant 9.79 Hz subsynchronous oscillations. Recommendations have been made for exploring countermeasures.

Aim of this paper is to evaluate the diagnostic contribution of various types of texture features in discrimination of hepatic tissue in abdominal non-enhanced Computed Tomography (CT) images. Regions of Interest (ROIs) corresponding to the classes: normal liver, cyst, hemangioma, and hepatocellular carcinoma were drawn by an experienced radiologist. For each ROI, five distinct sets of texture features are extracted using First Order Statistics (FOS), Spatial Gray Level Dependence Matrix (SGLDM), Gray Level Difference Method (GLDM), Laws' Texture Energy Measures (TEM), and Fractal Dimension Measurements (FDM). In order to evaluate the ability of the texture features to discriminate the various types of hepatic tissue, each set of texture features, or its reduced version after genetic algorithm based feature selection, was fed to a feed-forward Neural Network (NN) classifier. For each NN, the area under Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves (Az) was calculated for all one-vs-all discriminations of hepatic tissue. Additionally, the total Az for the multi-class discrimination task was estimated. The results show that features derived from FOS perform better than other texture features (total Az: 0.802+/-0.083) in the discrimination of hepatic tissue.

With the aim of understanding the mechanism of molecular evolution, mathematical problems on the evolutionary change of DNA sequences are studied. The problems studied and the results obtained are as follows: (1) Estimation of evolutionary distance between nucleotide sequences. Studying the pattern of nucleotide substitution for the case of unequal substitution rates, a new mathematical formula for estimating the average number of nucleotide substitutions per site between two homologous DNA sequences is developed. It is shown that this formula has a wider applicability than currently available formulae. A statistical method for estimating the number of nucleotide changes due to deletion and insertion is also developed. (2) Biases of the estimates of nucleotide substitutions obtained by the restriction enzyme method. The deviation of the estimate of nucleotide substitutions obtained by the restriction enzyme method from the true value is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the amount of the deviation depends on the nucleotides in the recognition sequence of the restriction enzyme used, unequal rates of substitution among different nucleotides, and nucleotide frequences, but the primary factor is the unequal rates of nucleotide substitution. When many different kinds of enzymes are used, however, the amount of average deviation is generally small. (3) Distribution of restriction fragment lengths. To see the effect of undetectable restriction fragments and fragment differences on the estimate of nucleotide differences, the theoretical distribution of fragment lengths is studied. This distribution depends on the type of restriction enzymes used as well as on the relative frequencies of four nucleotides. It is shown that undetectability of small fragments or fragment differences gives a serious underestimate of nucleotide substitutions when the length-difference method of estimation is used, but the extent of underestimation is small when the site-difference method is used. (4) Evolutionary relationships of DNA sequences in finite populations. A mathematical theory on the expected evolutionary relationships among DNA sequences (nucleons) randomly chosen from the same or different populations is developed under the assumption that the evolutionary change of nucleons is determined solely by mutation and random genetic drift. . . . Laboratory measurements of ultrasonic velocity (VP, VS) and attenuation (QP**-1, QS**-1) in deep-sea carbonate sequences at DSDP Sites 288, 289 and 316 in the equatorial Pacific were made in conjunction with studies of sediment density, porosity and pore geometry in order to investigate the role of diagenesis in the development of physical properties. Bulk porosity decrease appears to be related more significantly to depth of burial than to age of strata. Both depth of burial and age, however, are important factors controlling the modal pore diameter. In deep-burial diagenesis the modification of pore geometry is influenced by the presence of silica during diagenesis. In carbonate sequences at the three DSDP sites studied, shear wave attenuation anisotropy (QSHH**-1/QSHV**-1) correlates with the shear wave velocity anisotropy. Pore orientation, resulting from overburden pressure and other deep-burial diagenetic processes, is an important factor controlling the increase of VP anisotropy with age and depth of burial. On the basis of observed minor changes in anisotropy values with increasing pressure for some samples, other contributions to VP anisotropy such as grain orientation and bedding lamination cannot be ruled out.
