The alignment of collective goals and individual behavior has been extensively studied by economists under a principal-agent framework. Two main solutions have been presented: explicit incentive contracts and monitoring. These solutions correspond to changes in the objective situation faced by individuals. However, an extensive literature in social psychology provides evidence that behavior is influenced, not only by situational constraints, but also by attitudes. Therefore, an important aspect of organization is to choose the structures and procedures that best contribute to the dissemination of the desired attitudes throughout the organization. This paper studies how the initial configuration of attitudes and the size of the organization affect the optimal organizational structure and the timing of information flows when the objective is to align the members' attitudes. We identify and characterize three factors that affect the optimal organizational structures and procedures and the degree of alignment of attitudes: (1) clustering effects; (2) member cross-influence effects; and (3) leader cross-influence effects.

Using theory and empirical data from social psychology to measure for cultural differences between countries, we study the effect of individualism as defined by Hofstede (1980) and egalitarianism as defined by Schwartz (1994, 1999, 2004) on earnings management. We find a significant influence of both cultural measures. In line with Licht et al. (2004), who argue that individualistic societies may be less susceptible to corruption, we find that countries scoring high on individualism tend to have lower levels of earnings management. In addition, we find that egalitarianism, defined as a society's cultural orientation with respect to intolerance for abuses of market and political power, is negatively related with earnings management. Our results are robust to different specifications and controls. The main message of this paper is that besides formal institutions, cultural differences are relevant to explain earnings management behaviour. We think that our work adds to the understanding of the importance of cultural values in managerial behaviour across countries contributing to the literature on earnings management and law and institutions.

Recent episodes of public dissent (such as the demonstrations against G8 policies) raise the issue of the psychological processes triggered in obeying and disobeying the authority. Even if obedience to authority is an important aspect of social life and it plays a key role in maintaining social order, the concept of obedience has been studied in social psychology mainly in terms of its destructive aspects. Besides, most of the studies have overlooked the role of disobedience in the authority relationship. Disobedience may be conceived of as a protest that undermines the legitimacy of the authority or it can represent an instrument for controlling the legitimacy of the authority's demands, becoming a factor protecting against authoritarianism. In this article, a new perspective on the study of the relationship between the individual and the authority is put forward, considering obedience and disobedience as parallel concepts, each having constructive and destructive aspects. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Recently, some scholars have highlighted a paradoxical phenomenon existing in democratic systems:Those people who show the greatest support for democracy are also those most willing to protestagainst the authority and to question it. However, if we consider the tasks of contemporary democraticcitizenship in a social-psychological perspective, this apparent paradox becomes understandable.Obedience to authority may ensure the continuity of social and group life, but disobedience may becrucial in stopping the authority relationship from degenerating into an authoritarian one. FollowingKelman and Hamilton's analysis of legitimacy dynamics, we consider how actions of disobediencemay serve the defence of democracy. In particular, by considering the different ways in which peoplerelate to the political system, the relevance of so-called value-oriented citizens in supportingdemocracy will be considered.

Tota implementació d’un nou sistema de treball ha de ser revisada, avaluada i millorada perquè compleixi amb els seus objectius. Des que al curs 2004 (Ajut AGAUR 2004) varem dur a terme la implantació de la plataforma a les assignatures de la Facultat de Psicologia, estem treballant en les assignatures de l’àmbit de Psicologia social i, més concretament, Psicologia de les Organitzacions, amb uns materials originals, creatius i innovadors que no solament són fàcils d’utilitzar pel professor sinó que permeten la interacció entre docents de diferents facultats i estudiants, amb l’objectiu d’aprendre conjuntament. L’aplicació telemàtica per analitzar casos complexos va ser introduïda en una assignatura amb resultats significatius i és, a partir d’aquest projecte, que s’ha pogut treballar en altres assignatures amb iguals resultats d’èxit. L'informe que es presenta recull les millores establertes a partir de l’avaluació efectuada de l’experiència anterior i els resultats analitzats de la primera experiència. Les millores introduïdes no solament fan referència als materials (imatges, textos, relacions entre ells) sinó també a l’avaluació dels estudiants. Tenir uns criteris clars de què se li està demanant a l’estudiant que faci quan interactua amb la plataforma, l’amplitud del ventall de comportaments esperats (plantilla d’avaluació), i el feedback que ha de donar-se a cada estudiant, és una eina necessària per a poder avaluar amb garanties de qualitat. D’altra banda que el professor tingui un material elaborat en forma de graella, li facilita aquesta avaluació. Podem concloure amb aquest informe que la plataforma és capaç d’avaluar les competències que ens havíem proposat i, alhora, ser una bona eina per a treballar l’autonomia de l’estudiant i motivar-lo per a seguir aprofundint en l’àmbit dels RRHH en les organitzacions, objectiu que, des del principi, ens havíem proposat.

Obedience has been thoroughly studied in social psychology, both in its positive and negative aspects. Nevertheless, in these empirical studies disobedience has been considered to be the opposite of obedience and indeed its negation. Instead, some recent studies suggest that if obedience to authority is important in ensuring the continuity of social and group life, disobedience is crucial, under some circumstances, in stopping the authority relationship from degenerating into an authoritarian relationship. In this perspective, disobedience may be conceived of as a protest undermining the legitimacy of authority, or else it can represent an instrument of the community for controlling the legitimacy of the authority's demands, becoming a factor safeguarding against authoritarianism. The aim of the present study was to empirically verify the dynamics existing between disobedience and obedience. The results show that people who attach importance to both obedience and disobedience in the relationship between the individual and society recognize the importance of democratic values and consider themselves responsible for the defence of human rights. Instead, people who only recognize the value of obedience and consider disobedience as a threat to the status quo are more authoritarian, individualistic people.
