Estrogen deficiency has been associated with stress, anxiety and depression. Estrogen receptors have been identified in the median raphe nucleus (MRN). This structure is the main source of serotonergic projections to the hippocampus, a forebrain area implicated in the regulation of defensive responses and in the resistance to chronic stress. There is evidence showing that estrogen modulates 5-HT1A receptor functions. In the MRN, somatodendritic 5-HT1A receptors control the activity of serotonergic neurones by negative feedback. The present study evaluated the effect of intra-MRN injection of estradiol benzoate (EB) (600 or 1200 ng/0.2 mu l) on the performance of ovariectomised rats submitted to the elevated plus-maze test of anxiety and to the open-field test. Additionally, the same effect was evaluated with a previous intra-MRN injection of WAY 100635 (100 ng/0.2 mu l), an antagonist of 5-HT1A receptors. The results showed that both doses of EB increased the percentage of entries and the percentage of time spent into the open arms, suggestive of an anxiolytic effect. The highest dose of the drug also increased the number of entries into the enclosed arm and locomotion in the open field, indicating a stimulatory motor effect. WAY 100635 antagonised the effect of estradiol in the elevated plus-maze and in the open-field. The results show that estrogen receptors of the MRN are implicated in the regulation of anxiety-related behaviour. The results also support claims that the effect of estrogen involves a change in 5-HT1A receptor function. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1. The effects of lithium (Li+) on the concentration-response curves (CRC) to norepinephrine (NE) and acetylcholine (Ach) on the bisected rat vas deferens (RVD) were investigated, as well as its action on the neuronal uptake of [H-3] NE.2. Li+ did not affect the 50% effective concentration (EC(50)) of NE and Ach in the epididymal (EP) portion of the RVD.3. Li+ caused a significant increase of the EC(50) to NE and Ach in the prostatic (PP) portion of the RVD. This shift to the right of the CRC to NE was prevented by the presence of myoinositol.4. Incubation of the PP of the RVD with Li+, increased the neuronal uptake of NE. The simultaneous incubation with myoinositol prevented this increase.5. After the pre-treatment of the rats with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), or in the presence of cocaine, Li+ failed to desensitize the PP of the RVD to NE.6. These results suggest that the effect of Li+ on the PP of the RVD occurs mainly at the pre-synaptic level and may be related to the increase of neuronal uptake and to the interference of Li+ on phosphatidylinositol hydrolysis.

The effect of a lyophilized mistletoe infusion (LMI) was studied on isolated guinea-pig vas deferens. LMI caused a contraction which was partially blocked by phentolamine but not by atropine. LMI caused a shift to the left of the norepinephrine concentration-effect curve (CEC), an effect which appeared to be blocked by atropine and was absent in animals previously treated with reserpine and α-methyl-para-tyrosine. The increase of the norepinephrine maximal response induced by LMI was not blocked by atropine or pharmacological denervation. LMI caused a shift to the right of the acetylcholine CEC and had no effect on the acetylcholine maximal response. These results suggest that the effects seem to be due mainly to the presence of potassium ion in the LMI; however, the participation of muscarinic agonist(s) of reduced intrinsic activity or some tyramine-like substance could not be ruled out.

We determined the effects of losartan and CGP42112A (selective ligands of the AT1 and AT2 angiotensin receptors, respectively) and salarasin (a relatively nonselective angiotensin receptor antagonist) on urinary volume and urinary sodium and potassium excretion induced by administration of angiotensin II (ANG II) into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of conscious rats. Both the AT1 and AT2 ligands and salarasin administered in the presence of ANG II elicited a concentration-dependent inhibition of urine excretion, but losartan inhibited only 75% of this response. The IC50 for salarasin, CGP42112A, and losartan was 0.01, 0.05, and 6 nM, respectively. Previous treatment with saralasin, CGP42112A and losartan competitively antagonized the natriuretic responses to PVN administration of ANG II, and the IC50 values were 0.09, 0.48, and 10 nM, respectively. The maximum response to losartan was 65% of that obtained with saralasin. Pretreatment with saralasin, losartan, and CGP42112A injected into the PVN caused shifts to the right of the concentration-response curves, but the losartan concentrations were disproportionately greater compared with salarasin or CGP42112A. The IC50 values were 0.06, 0.5, and 7.0 for salarasin, CGP42112A, and losartan, respectively. These results suggest that both AT1 and AT2 receptor subtypes in the PVN are involved in ANG II-related urine, sodium, and potassium excretion, and that the inhibitory responses to AT2 blockade are predominant. The inalienable right of all people to education is enshrined in various international covenants, conventions and agreements, yet the actual fulfilment of this right varies in quantity and quality from one country to the other. On average, the compulsory length of schooling in the countries of the region is 10 years. Half of these countries have already made all secondary education mandatory, which is eminently reasonable since it is commonly accepted as a minimum threshold for lifelong well-being and skills-building. The main article in this edition of Challenges discusses this subject in depth, and shows how far behind we are in ensuring that all adolescents have access to the education to which they are entitled. It focuses on the low secondary school-completion rate and low level of learning acquisition, the strong socioeconomic and sociocultural stratification, the lack of citizenship skills, and the persistence of a relatively high dropout rate at all levels of secondary education. The main challenge in guaranteeing the right to education lies in reducing learning and attainment gaps by helping the groups that are presently lagging behind the most. As is customary, there are also reports on relevant meetings and conferences held in the region over the past half-year, together with the opinions of experts and adolescents and success stories in promoting school attendance in Uruguay and the Dominican Republic.

O pluralismo é uma marca da democracia contemporânea e a Constituição de 1988 representou um importante avanço na proteção das diversidades no Brasil, consagrando a multiplicidade de idéias, culturas e etnias, e pressupondo o diálogo entre opiniões e pensamentos divergentes. Neste contexto, os povos indígenas adquiriram o direito à alteridade, ou seja, foram respeitadas as suas especificidades étnico-culturais, garantindo-lhes o direito de serem e permanecerem índios. A delimitação, a desintrusão e a proteção de um espaço territorial adequado para os diferentes povos indígenas são consideradas como uma condição essencial para a sobrevivência física e cultural desses grupos. O presente trabalho pretende, então, analisar a interpretação adotada pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) na Súmula 650, acerca do termo “terras tradicionalmente ocupadas por índios” (CF/88 art. 231, §§ 1º e 2º), de forma a compreender o seu alcance e os seus limites de aplicação. Para tanto, inicialmente, foi reconstruído o itinerário do conceito nos julgados do STF, analisando-se as decisões que trataram do tema. O marco inicial é a Súmula 480 e seus precedentes e o final, a Súmula 650, com a análise dos casos que a conformaram. Como resultado, verificou-se que, nas decisões anteriores à Súmula 650, o Tribunal se afastou do conceito civil de posse para contemplar um conceito de posse indígena, no qual a atualidade pode ser secundária, diante de provas que comprovem a ocupação tradicional. Da análise dos precedentes da Súmula 650, constatou-se que o julgamento envolveu um contexto histórico específico, onde os povos indígenas estavam extintos. Por outro lado, foram utilizados argumentos generalizantes que se indiscriminadamente aplicados poderão causar sérios prejuízos aos direitos territoriais indígenas, sobretudo quanto à restituição de terras tradicionais. A partir dos resultados, concluiu-se que o Enunciado da Súmula 650 não pode ser aplicado de forma generalizada, apresentando-se como fundamentos para uma aplicação limitada a faticidade e historicidade do caso concreto; a Convenção 169 da OIT e orientações da Agenda 21; e as demais interpretações do STF acerca do termo “terras tradicionalmente ocupadas”.

Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar a concepção de escola pública de qualidade que se encontra implícita ou explicitamente expressa nos documentos oficiais expedidos pela Secretaria Estadual de Educação do Estado de São Paulo no período compreendido entre os anos de 1997 e 1998, período de grandes transformações na rede de ensino paulista. A análise basear-se-á em dois campos de entendimento do conceito de qualidade que parecem configurar-se na década de 1990: qualidade associada a resultados acadêmicos e qualidade como direito que se expressa também no direito de acesso ao conhecimento. Para tanto se realizou o levantamento, a organização e a análise de todos os documentos oficiais que se relacionavam à temática da qualidade no que refere a etapa obrigatória de escolarização: ensino fundamental (7 a 14 anos).

The Information Access law, sanctioned in November 18, 2011, regulates the constitutional right of access to public information by Brazilian citizens. Although this law requires the provision of information of public interest, it does not define how such information should be made available. Ideally, information should be in an open format, allowing its use in an efficient and fast way. In the official sites of the federal government the way information is currently available does not allow its reuse as they are presented in dynamic pages from the selection parameters and filters. The objective aim of this paper is to present the system called MDDIR Tool, which proposes ways to persist, represent and retrieve digital information resources generated by the Federal Government official sites. Although this system had been designed for a specific purpose, it may be applied to other fields with similar characteristics. The purpose is to facilitate the access to open data, allowing such data to be consolidated and organized , generating new knowledge and information easy to be interpreted by the general population.
