In the fall of 2007, a group of individuals representing a wide range of aspects of the wind industry gathered together and voted to establish the Iowa Wind Energy Association (IWEA). Now in its second year and operated out of Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, our association’s increasing membership rolls parallel the phenomenal growth of the wind energyindustry in our state. IWEA has just concluded our second annual meeting which brought together a host of wind energy experts to share their knowledge and expertise. Attending were wind energy companies, wind developers, agricultural landowners, large- and small-scale wind farm producers, construction companies, energy companies, educators and students. This broad range of interests pursuing common goals has made the Iowa WindEnergy Association one of the largest state wind organizations in the nation.

This study examines how firms interpret new, potentially disruptive technologies in their own strategic context. The work presents a cross-case analysis of four potentially disruptive technologies or technical operating models: Bluetooth, WLAN, Grid computing and Mobile Peer-to-peer paradigm. The technologies were investigated from the perspective of three mobile operators, a device manufacturer and a software company in the ICT industry. The theoretical background for the study consists of the resource-based view of the firm with dynamic perspective, the theories on the nature of technology and innovations, and the concept of business model. The literature review builds up a propositional framework for estimating the amount of radical change in the companies' business model with two middle variables, the disruptiveness potential of a new technology, and the strategic importance of a new technology to a firm. The data was gathered in group discussion sessions in each company. The results of each case analysis were brought together to evaluate, how firms interpret the potential disruptiveness in terms of changes in product characteristics and added value, technology and market uncertainty, changes in product-market positions, possible competence disruption and changes in value network positions. The results indicate that the perceived disruptiveness in terms ofproduct characteristics does not necessarily translate into strategic importance. In addition, firms did not see the new technologies as a threat in terms of potential competence disruption.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää kuinka raakapuumarkkinat muodostuvat ja mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat raakapuun tarjontaan ja hankintaan. Lisäksi tarkastellaan onko tuontipuu korvaava vai täydentävä raaka-aine ja millainen rooli valtiovallalla on luodessaan yrityksille toimintaympäristöä. Työ on voimakkaasti teoreettispainotteinen. Teorian tarkoituksena on esittää se tieteellinen perusta, jolle raakapuumarkkinat sijoittuvat. Lisäksi on hyväksikäytetty aiemmin tehtyjä tutkimuksia, joiden tarkoituksena on valaista asiaa hieman käytännönläheisemmin. Työn tuloksena saadaan vastaukset tutkimuksen tavoitteisiin. Tulosten perusteella on ilmeistä, että keskeisin tarjontaan vaikuttava tekijä on puun hinta ja etenkin siihen liittyvät hintaodotukset. Kysyntään on puolestaan vaikuttanut teollisuuden kapasiteetin kehitys, tuotteiden menekki ja tuontipuun saatavuus. Tuotu koivukuitu on pikemminkin täydentänyt kuin korvannut kotimaan koivukuitua teollisuuden puun hankinnassa. Tuotu mäntykuitu toimii korvaavana tuotteena, mutta kuusikuidun kohdalla kotimaan hinnalla ei ole vaikutusta tuonnin määrään, ainoastaan tuontipuun omalla hinnalla näyttää olevan vaikutus tuontimäärään.

Tämän tutkimuksen ensisijaisena tavoitteena oli laatia terästehtaan käyttöön kriteeristö päätöksenteon tueksi, miten asiakastiedon hallintaa yrityksessä kehitetään. Kriteeristön aikaansaamiseksi tutkimuksessa kartoitettiin erilaisia esimerkin luonteisia ratkaisuvaihtoehtoja asiakastiedon haltuun ottamiseksi. Nykytilan kartoituksessa ja tietotarvevaatimusten määrittelyssä käytettiin haastattelututkimusta. Haastattelujen tarkoituksena oli myöskin selvittää järjestelmän käyttäjien asettamat vaateet asiakastiedon hallinnalle. Diplomityöhön liittyi kirjallisuustutkimus, jossa tarkasteltiin asiakastiedon merkitystä liiketoiminnalle sekä asiakastiedon hallinnan ja hallintajärjestelmien käsitteitä. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin lisäksi asiakastiedon hallintajärjestelmien valinnassa ja käyttöönotossa huomioitavia seikkoja. Kirjallisuustutkimus on tehty terästehtaan liiketoimintaympäristön näkökulmasta. Diplomityön lopputuloksena terästehtaalle luotiin kriteeristö asiakastiedon hallinnan kehittämispäätösten tueksi. Kriteereissä on huomioitu järjestelmästä riippumattomat, ohjelmiston valinnassa huomioitavat sekä ohjelmiston toimittajaan kohdistuvat vaatimukset.

Pystyäkseen puolueettomasti osoittamaan kaikille sidosryhmilleen toimintansa, tuotteensa tai palvelunsa laadun yritykset pyrkivät saamaan itselleen laatusertifikaatin. Sertifikaatti on todistus laatustandardin mukaisesta toiminnasta.

Globaalinen liiketoimintaympäristö on muutoksessa. Uudet teknologiat muuttavat toimintaympäristöä ja talouden säännöt muuttuvat nopeasti. Uusia liiketoimintamalleja tarvitaan.

Project business companies are moving towards solution offering in order to avoid discontinuity of project business and to gain other advantages. An option to implement solution business could be BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) business model where a company is given the responsibilities to design, finance, build, own, operate and maintain for example production facilities of a client. The contract is made for 10-30 years, the client pays the solution during this period of time and after contract termination the facilities are transferred to the ownership of the client. The purpose of this study was to provide knowledge about BOOT business model for the company in question and its employees and to create a settlement of the advantages, disadvantages and risks of it. Furthermore, one of the main objectives was to create a description of the network needed to run a BOOT project. The objectives were met through a literature study and an explorative case study with appropriate interviews. Based on this study, the company should be able to evaluate the applicability of BOOT business model to their business environment better.

This thesis studies forming a complete solution concept for tap water systems in project business environment. The aim of the study is to find tools and means for the target company to determine the scope of their tap water solution offering and to research what kind of organizational capabilities and resources are needed to supply such system solutions. With the help of literature, the characteristics of systems selling and project business and thematics of systems integration and integrated solutions are examined, and the significance of modularity and customer requirements in the given operational environment is discussed. After this, a checklist tool for customer requirements management is developed for the tap water system along with a module allocation method. The study proposes that with the checklist and module allocation the technical specifications can be extensively and innovatively defined for the system. The tools developed are a part of a complete tap water solution concept, which suggests that integrated solutions might constitute possibilities for the company to outperform its competitors when the traditional business methods of the industry are becoming obsolete.
