This report describes development of micro-fabricated piezoelectric ultrasonic motors and bulk-ceramic piezoelectric ultrasonic motors. Ultrasonic motors offer the advantage of low speed, high torque operation without the need for gears. They can be made compact and lightweight and provide a holding torque in the absence of applied power, due to the traveling wave frictional coupling mechanism between the rotor and the stator. This report covers modeling, simulation, fabrication and testing of ultrasonic motors. Design of experiments methods were also utilized to find optimal motor parameters. A suite of 8 mm diameter x 3 mm tall motors were machined for these studies and maximum stall torques as large as 10^(- 3) Nm, maximum no-load speeds of 1710 rpm and peak power outputs of 27 mW were realized. Aditionally, this report describes the implementation of a microfabricated ultrasonic motor using thin-film lead zirconate titanate. In a joint project with the Pennsylvania State University Materials Research Laboratory and MIT Lincoln Laboratory, 2 mm and 5 mm diameter stator structures were fabricated on 1 micron thick silicon nitride membranes. Small glass lenses placed down on top spun at 100-300 rpm with 4 V excitation at 90 kHz. The large power densities and stall torques of these piezoelectric ultrasonic motors offer tremendous promis for integrated machines: complete intelligent, electro-mechanical autonomous systems mass-produced in a single fabrication process.

Micronozzles with piezoelectric actuator were fabricated and investigated. The micronozzles were fabricated in glass substrates using a powder-blasting technique, and the actuator is a bimorph structure made from a piezoelectric polymer. The actuator was located at the nozzle outlet, and was driven in an oscillating mode by applying an alternating voltage across the actuator electrodes. With a pressure difference between inlet and outlet, the gas flow rate through the device was increased. This effect was quantified, and compared to a similar micronozzle with no actuator. The increase in the flow rate was defined as the gas flow through the micronozzle with actuator oscillating minus the gas flow without actuator, was found to depend on the inlet pressure, the pressure ratio, and the nozzle throat diameter. A new device was developed to hold linear transducers for transvaginal follicle aspiration. Efficacy of follicle aspiration was compared using a linear 6 MHz and a convex 5 MHz transducer. Fifty-five cows were submitted to follicle aspiration at random days of the estrous cycle. Aspirations were conducted with linear (n = 28) and convex (n = 38) transducers with 18 G needles at a negative pressure corresponding to 13 ml H2O/min. A greater number of follicles were aspirated using convex than to linear probe (12.4 versus 7.8, respectively, P < 0.05). Mean number of oocytes and recovery rates were similar for convex (5.4 and 48.6%) and linear (4.6 and 59.3%) transducers. Limited space between the linear transducer and needle guide restricted access to some portions of the ovary, reducing the number of follicles aspirated using a linear transducer. The newly developed adaptor allowed greater stability, holding the ovaries firmly against the linear transducer. This diminished mobility permitted a similar number of oocytes to be recovered with both transducers. In conclusion, this new adaptor provided a low cost alternative for routine follicle aspiration and oocyte recovery in cattle. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The piezoelectric quartz crystal resonators modified with oligonucleotide probes were used for detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in serum. The gold electrodes on either rough or smooth surface crystals were modified with a self-assembled monolayer of cystamine. After activation with glutaraldehyde, either avidin or streptavidin were immobilized and used for attachment of biotinylated DNA probes (four different sequences). Piezoelectric biosensors were used in a flow-through setup for direct monitoring of DNA resulting from the reverse transcriptase-linked polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) amplification of the original viral RNA. The samples of patients with hepatitis C were analyzed and the results were compared with the standard RT-PCR procedure (Amplicor test kit of Roche, microwell format with spectrophotometric evaluation). The piezoelectric hybridization assay was completed in 10 min and the same sensing surface was suitable for repeated use. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of film orientation on piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth layered compounds deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates was investigated. Piezo-force microscopy was used to probe the local piezoelectric properties of Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12), CaBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) and SrBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) films. Our measurements on individual grains clearly reveal that the local piezoelectric properties are determined by the polarization state of the grain. A piezoelectric coefficient of 65 pm/V was attained after poling in a grain with a polar axis very close to the normal direction. The piezoelectric coefficient and the remanent polarization were larger for a-b axes oriented than for c-axis-oriented films. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) thin films and powders with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor solution. The effect of lanthanum on the structure of BIT powders was investigated by Rietveld Method. The increase of lanthanum content does not lead to any secondary phases. Orthorhombicity of the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice decreased with the increase of lanthanum content due the reduction of a/b ratio. The BLT films show piezoelectric coefficients of 45, 19, 16 and 10 pm/V for x = 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75, respectively. The piezoelectric response is strongly reduced by the amount of lanthanum added to the system. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Smart material technology has become an area of increasing interest for the development of lighter and stronger structures that are able to incorporate actuator and sensor capabilities for collocated control. In the design of actively controlled structures, the determination of the actuator locations and the controller gains is a very important issue. For that purpose, smart material modeling, modal analysis methods, and control and optimization techniques are the most important ingredients to be taken into account. The optimization problem to be solved in this context presents two interdependent aspects. The first is related to the discrete optimal actuator location selection problem, which is solved in this paper using genetic algorithms. The second is represented by a continuous variable optimization problem, through which the control gains are determined using classical techniques. A cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam is used to illustrate the presented methodology.

Flexible and free-standing films of piezoelectric composites made up of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic powder dispersed in a castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) matrix were obtained by spin coating and characterised as materials for sensor applications. The piezoelectric coefficients d(31) and d(33) were measured with the usual technique. The piezoelectric charge constant d(33) yields values up to less than or equal to 24 pC/N, even at lower PZT content (33 vol%). Some desirable properties like piezoelectricity, flexibility and good mechanical resistance show this new material to be a good alternative for use as sensors and actuators.
