The goal of this study was to propose a new functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm using a language-free adaptation of a 2-back working memory task to avoid cultural and educational bias. We additionally provide an index of the validity of the proposed paradigm and test whether the experimental task discriminates the behavioural performances of healthy participants from those of individuals with working memory deficits. Ten healthy participants and nine patients presenting working memory (WM) deficits due to acquired brain injury (ABI) performed the developed task. To inspect whether the paradigm activates brain areas typically involved in visual working memory (VWM), brain activation of the healthy participants was assessed with fMRIs. To examine the task's capacity to discriminate behavioural data, performances of the healthy participants in the task were compared with those of ABI patients. Data were analysed with GLM-based random effects procedures and t-tests. We found an increase of the BOLD signal in the specialized areas of VWM. Concerning behavioural performances, healthy participants showed the predicted pattern of more hits, less omissions and a tendency for fewer false alarms, more self-corrected responses, and faster reaction times, when compared with subjects presenting WM impairments. The results suggest that this task activates brain areas involved in VWM and discriminates behavioural performances of clinical and non-clinical groups. It can thus be used as a research methodology for behavioural and neuroimaging studies of VWM in block-design paradigms.

All over the world, the liberalization of electricity markets, which follows different paradigms, has created new challenges for those involved in this sector. In order to respond to these challenges, electric power systems suffered a significant restructuring in its mode of operation and planning. This restructuring resulted in a considerable increase of the electric sector competitiveness. Particularly, the Ancillary Services (AS) market has been target of constant renovations in its operation mode as it is a targeted market for the trading of services, which have as main objective to ensure the operation of electric power systems with appropriate levels of stability, safety, quality, equity and competitiveness. In this way, with the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources including distributed generation, demand response, storage units and electric vehicles, it is essential to develop new smarter and hierarchical methods of operation of electric power systems. As these resources are mostly connected to the distribution network, it is important to consider the introduction of this kind of resources in AS delivery in order to achieve greater reliability and cost efficiency of electrical power systems operation. The main contribution of this work is the design and development of mechanisms and methodologies of AS market and for energy and AS joint market, considering different management entities of transmission and distribution networks. Several models developed in this work consider the most common AS in the liberalized market environment: Regulation Down; Regulation Up; Spinning Reserve and Non-Spinning Reserve. The presented models consider different rules and ways of operation, such as the division of market by network areas, which allows the congestion management of interconnections between areas; or the ancillary service cascading process, which allows the replacement of AS of superior quality by lower quality of AS, ensuring a better economic performance of the market. A major contribution of this work is the development an innovative methodology of market clearing process to be used in the energy and AS joint market, able to ensure viable and feasible solutions in markets, where there are technical constraints in the transmission network involving its division into areas or regions. The proposed method is based on the determination of Bialek topological factors and considers the contribution of the dispatch for all services of increase of generation (energy, Regulation Up, Spinning and Non-Spinning reserves) in network congestion. The use of Bialek factors in each iteration of the proposed methodology allows limiting the bids in the market while ensuring that the solution is feasible in any context of system operation. Another important contribution of this work is the model of the contribution of distributed energy resources in the ancillary services. In this way, a Virtual Power Player (VPP) is considered in order to aggregate, manage and interact with distributed energy resources. The VPP manages all the agents aggregated, being able to supply AS to the system operator, with the main purpose of participation in electricity market. In order to ensure their participation in the AS, the VPP should have a set of contracts with the agents that include a set of diversified and adapted rules to each kind of distributed resource. All methodologies developed and implemented in this work have been integrated into the MASCEM simulator, which is a simulator based on a multi-agent system that allows to study complex operation of electricity markets. In this way, the developed methodologies allow the simulator to cover more operation contexts of the present and future of the electricity market. In this way, this dissertation offers a huge contribution to the AS market simulation, based on models and mechanisms currently used in several real markets, as well as the introduction of innovative methodologies of market clearing process on the energy and AS joint market. This dissertation presents five case studies; each one consists of multiple scenarios. The first case study illustrates the application of AS market simulation considering several bids of market players. The energy and ancillary services joint market simulation is exposed in the second case study. In the third case study it is developed a comparison between the simulation of the joint market methodology, in which the player bids to the ancillary services is considered by network areas and a reference methodology. The fourth case study presents the simulation of joint market methodology based on Bialek topological distribution factors applied to transmission network with 7 buses managed by a TSO. The last case study presents a joint market model simulation which considers the aggregation of small players to a VPP, as well as complex contracts related to these entities. The case study comprises a distribution network with 33 buses managed by VPP, which comprises several kinds of distributed resources, such as photovoltaic, CHP, fuel cells, wind turbines, biomass, small hydro, municipal solid waste, demand response, and storage units.

Os paradigmas concernentes à educação e ao atendimento de crianças com necessidades educativas especiais têm evoluído ao longo do tempo. De facto, se no paradigma da segregação o foco de incapacidade se situava no indivíduo, com o paradigma da inclusão o foco desloca-se para o ambiente, na medida em que este se deve organizar e preparar para dar resposta aos indivíduos com incapacidade. Por conseguinte, o meio deve assumir-se como facilitador à participação de todas as crianças. Tal fundamento comporta desafios para os professores e educadores, aos quais compete identificar as pressões de exclusão que inibem a participação plena de todos os alunos em todas as atividades inerentes ao meio escolar e acionar os suportes necessários para que tal não suceda. Com a realização deste estudo pretendemos conhecer de modo mais aprofundado as representações dos professores acerca da participação de alunos com diferentes tipos de incapacidade em variadas atividades e contextos escolares, identificando barreiras e facilitadores à sua participação e analisando os possíveis contributos pessoais dos professores para incrementar o nível de participação dos alunos com incapacidade em atividades inerentes ao meio escolar. O estudo operacionalizou-se através da aplicação de um inquérito por questionário, destinado a professores de todos os níveis de ensino e grupos de recrutamento. Através da aplicação deste instrumento, procurámos obter informações sobre os inquiridos, as representações dos professores acerca da participação de alunos com diferentes tipos de incapacidade em diversas atividades escolares, e, por fim, possíveis contributos para incrementar o nível de participação desses mesmos alunos. Os resultados sugerem que o tipo de incapacidade apresentado pelo aluno influencia as expetativas de participação de educadores e professores do ensino regular e da educação especial. Contudo, não confirmámos a existência de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos de professores. No que concerne a possíveis contributos para incrementar a participação de alunos com incapacidade em diversas atividades escolares, identificámos a necessidade de se fomentar e desenvolver uma cultura de inclusão na escola.

RESUMO - Os sistemas de saúde deparam-se, actualmente, com novos paradigmas, ao nível da qualidade da prestação de cuidados de saúde, bem como no que se refere à necessidade de controlo dos custos com o sector da saúde, obrigando as organizações a adaptarem-se por forma a fornecerem a resposta mais adequada às crescentes necessidades dos indivíduos. O reconhecimento desta realidade tem levado os governos de muitos países a definir políticas orientadas para problemas de saúde específicos e a adoptar estratégias de intervenção que privilegiam uma abordagem integrada com o objectivo de melhorarem progressivamente o nível de saúde das populações, a qualidade dos cuidados prestados e a eficiência na utilização de recursos. Em Portugal, a aplicação dos princípios que estiveram na base dos modelos de gestão da doença, deu origem ao modelo experimental de Gestão Integrada da Doença, que incorpora a gestão clínica da doença, centrada no doente, com especial enfoque na sua autogestão e na clarificação das melhores práticas profissionais, visando a sua uniformização; a reorganização do modelo de prestação de cuidados, com a criação de Centros de Elevada Diferenciação e Centros de Tratamento, com especiais preocupações no que concerne à orientação do doente no sistema para que os cuidados lhe seja ministrados no nível mais adequado; um modelo de financiamento específico, indexado aos resultados, que reflicta a adopção das melhores práticas; um sistema de informação que permita a monitorização e avaliação constante deste processo. O desenvolvimento deste modelo organizacional tem-se revelado como uma estratégia inovadora e como uma ferramenta de elevado potencial para a melhoria da prestação de cuidados de saúde e para a promoção de uma maior efectividade e eficiência, tal como poderá, ainda, constituirse como um veículo, importante e permanente, de informação de apoio à decisão em Saúde. Este modelo visa, no fundo, promover uma acção concertada no sentido da obtenção de uma intervenção precisa, através da mobilização de recursos adequados, que permitam uma melhoria do estado de saúde, da qualidade de vida e do bem-estar global dos doentes. Esta abordagem passa pela colaboração e coordenação dos diferentes níveis de prestação de cuidados, no sentido de oferecerem cuidados integrados de saúde, com níveis de qualidade elevados em termos de prevenção, diagnóstico, tratamento, reabilitação e acompanhamento. ------------------------ --ABSTRACT – The health systems are faced with new paradigms, on one hand in the healthcare services delivered to the populations, and on the other hand, in the need to control costs in the health sector, forcing organizations to adapt and provide the most appropriate response to the individuals growing needs. The magnitude of this problem, in terms of public health, requires the adoption of a directed, targeted, planned and integrated action, based on clear and well defined strategies in order to obtain health gains, improving the quality of care and streamlining the costs. In Portugal, the application of those principles forming the basis of the disease management models, led to the Integrated Disease Management model which, apart from the clinical management of the disease, also incorporates the healthcare delivery structure reorganization, a specific financing model based on an information system that allows the process monitoring and evaluation. The development of Integrated Disease Management models is a central strategy and a tool for improving healthcare delivery, more effectively and efficiently, and can even be an important and permanent vehicle of information for health decision support. Therefore, it is important to promote a concerted action towards achieving a precise intervention, mobilizing the resources, improving the health status, quality of life and the overall patients’ wellbeing. Currently the world around us "reboots" every minute and “staying at the forefront” seems to be a very arduous task. The continuous and “speeded” progress of society requires, from all the actors, a dynamic and efficient attitude both in terms progress monitoring and moving adaptation. With regard to education, no matter how updated we are in relation to the contents, the didactic strategies and technological resources, we are inevitably compelled to adapt to new paradigms and rethink the traditional teaching methods. It is in this context that the contribution of e-learning platforms arises. Here teachers and students have at their disposal new ways to enhance the teaching and learning process, and these platforms are seen, at the present time, as significant virtual teaching and learning supporting environments. This paper presents a Project and attempts to illustrate the potential that new technologies present as a “backing” tool in different stages of teaching and learning at different levels and areas of knowledge, particularly in Mathematics. We intend to promote a constructive discussion moment, exposing our actual perception - that the use of the Learning Management System Moodle, by Higher Education teachers, as supplementary teaching-learning environment for virtual classroom sessions can contribute for greater efficiency and effectiveness of teaching practice and to improve student achievement. Regarding the Learning analytics experience we will present a few results obtained with some assessment Learning Analytics tools, where we profoundly felt that the assessment of students’ performance in online learning environments is a challenging and demanding task.

Currently, the teaching-learning process in domains, such as computer programming, is characterized by an extensive curricula and a high enrolment of students. This poses a great workload for faculty and teaching assistants responsible for the creation, delivery, and assessment of student exercises. The main goal of this chapter is to foster practice-based learning in complex domains. This objective is attained with an e-learning framework—called Ensemble—as a conceptual tool to organize and facilitate technical interoperability among services. The Ensemble framework is used on a specific domain: computer programming. Content issues are tacked with a standard format to describe programming exercises as learning objects. Communication is achieved with the extension of existing specifications for the interoperation with several systems typically found in an e-learning environment. In order to evaluate the acceptability of the proposed solution, an Ensemble instance was validated on a classroom experiment with encouraging results.

Teaching and learning computer programming is as challenging as difficult. Assessing the work of students and providing individualised feedback to all is time-consuming and error prone for teachers and frequently involves a time delay. The existent tools and specifications prove to be insufficient in complex evaluation domains where there is a greater need to practice. At the same time Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are appearing revealing a new way of learning, more dynamic and more accessible. However this new paradigm raises serious questions regarding the monitoring of student progress and its timely feedback. This paper provides a conceptual design model for a computer programming learning environment. This environment uses the portal interface design model gathering information from a network of services such as repositories and program evaluators. The design model includes also the integration with learning management systems, a central piece in the MOOC realm, endowing the model with characteristics such as scalability, collaboration and interoperability. This model is not limited to the domain of computer programming and can be adapted to any complex area that requires systematic evaluation with immediate feedback.

In order to increase the efficiency in the use of energy resources, the electrical grid is slowly evolving into a smart(er) grid that allows users' production and storage of energy, automatic and remote control of appliances, energy exchange between users, and in general optimizations over how the energy is managed and consumed. One of the main innovations of the smart grid is its organization over an energy plane that involves the actual exchange of energy, and a data plane that regards the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure used for the management of the grid's data. In the particular case of the data plane, the exchange of large quantities of data can be facilitated by a middleware based on a messaging bus. Existing messaging buses follow different data management paradigms (e.g.: request/response, publish/subscribe, data-oriented messaging) and thus satisfy smart grids' communication requirements at different extents. This work contributes to the state of the art by identifying, in existing standards and architectures, common requirements that impact in the messaging system of a data plane for the smart grid. The paper analyzes existing messaging bus paradigms that can be used as a basis for the ICT infrastructure of a smart grid and discusses how these can satisfy smart grids' requirements.

From the boom of corporate identity in the 50s, 60 years have passed, and we now see picture marks become more complex and question axioms of identity design, like simplicity or bidimensionality. In these changing times, where access to technology and to information makes it possible for one to see the world as a ‘flat’ place [1], where virtually anyone with a computer can create, it is worth considering how much has changed and how much remains the same in picture marks design. Are the silent designers [2] — the technology and software — growing louder? Are picture marks mimicking each other? Are graphic marks following trendy solutions? It is clear the change of paradigms the new technologies have over the graphic zeitgeist. However, what are the consequences of the transformation in the modus operandi and its result in picture marks evolving solutions? And what does this evolution say about us? Being both a condensation of meaning about a corporation or institution and a rhetorical instrument by which to persuade an audience that a product or entity has distinctive and desirable qualities, picture marks are, therefore, a condensed representation of social identity. They are signs full of signification beyond themselves, representing ourselves and our world and by means of its analysis we can learn a bit more about our role as designers, our relation towards new technologies and foresee our role as designers in the future.
