This work presents a comparative study covering four different courses lectured at the Polytechnic of Porto - School of Engineering, regarding the usage of a particular Learning Management System, i.e. Moodle, and its impact on students' results. This study addresses teachers who used this platform as a complement to their courses (b-learning) and identifies some particular issues in order to potentiate students' engagement and learning. Even though positive correlation factors exist, e.g. between the number of Moodle accesses versus the final exam grade obtained by each student, the explanation behind it may not be straightforward. Mapping this particular factor to course numbers reveals that the quality of the resources might be preponderant and not only their quantity. These results point to the fact that some dynamic resources might enlarge students' engagement.

Current Learning Management Systems focus on the management of students, keeping track of their progress across all types of training activities. This type of systems lacks integration with other e-Learning systems. For instance, learning objects stored in a centralized repository are unavailable throughout an organization for potential reuse. In this paper we present the interoperability features of crimsonHex - a service oriented repository of learning objects - highlighting the use of XML languages. Its nteroperability features are compliant with the existing standards and we propose extensions to the IMS interoperability recommendation, adding new functions, formalizing an XML message interchange and providing also a REST interface. To validate the proposed extensions and its implementation in crimsonHex we designed two repository plugins for Moodle 2.0, the first of which is already implemented and is expected to be included in the next release of this popular learning management system.

Para muitos, o ato de ensinar, era e continua a ser uma “arte”, em que os professores e os grandes mestres mais eficientes são aqueles que têm a capacidade e a arte de fazer passar as suas mensagens e conhecimentos, de forma simples e apelativa, independentemente da área de estudo. A informação relacionada com a aula, é cada vez mais digital, sendo importante, por parte dos docentes, o domínio de tecnologias de criação, organização e disponibilização de conteúdos. Essa partilha foi inicialmente possível pelas páginas Web e mais tarde pelas plataformas LMS (Learning Management System). Criar um Website era uma tarefa complicada quer ao nível do seu custo quer ao nível do domínio da tecnologia Web e era por vezes necessário contratar profissionais para o efeito. Surgiram então as CMS (Content Management System) que são tecnologias Open Source, que permitem a gestão de conteúdos. Neste sentido foi realizado um estudo com o objetivo de aferir sobre as competências dos professores no domínio da partilha de Gestão de Conteúdos Digitais. O presente estudo permitiu retirar conclusões sobre o potencial e aplicabilidade das CMS no ensino. O principal objetivo do presente estudo incidiu no potencial de distribuição e partilha de Recursos Educativos Digitais organizados sobre o ponto de vista pedagógico aos alunos. Foi ainda analisado e estudado o papel do Cloud Computing no processo de partilha colaborativa de documentos. Foi delineado como suporte à presente investigação um curso modelo que por sua vez foi implementado nas três principais CMS da atualidade e avaliado o potencial de cada uma neste contexto. Finalmente foram apresentadas as conclusões retiradas do presente estudo.

A Learning Management System (LMS) plays an important role in any eLearning environment. Still, the LMS cannot afford to be isolated from other systems in an educational institution. Thus, the potential for interoperability is an important, although frequently overlooked, aspect of an LMS system. In this chapter we make a comparative study of the interoperability features of the most relevant LMS in use nowadays. We start by defining a comparison framework, with systems that are representative of the LMS universe, and interoperability facets that are representative of the type integration with other broad classes of eLearning systems. For each interoperability facet we categorize and identify the most representative remote systems, we present a comprehensive survey of existing standards and we illustrate with concrete integration scenarios. Finally, we draw some conclusions on the status of interoperability in LMS based on our study.

One of the main implications is related to the change of the paradigm of a teacher centered education, to a paradigm that is student centered. This change implies the change of the way to assess courses in higher education institutions. Continuous and formative assessments emerged as the focus, catalyzed by electronic assessment, or e-assessment. This paper presents a case of the implementation of an e-assessment strategy, implemented in order to allow continuous, formative assessment in numerous mathematics classes using multiple-choice questions tests implement in Moodle open-source learning management system. The implementation can be considered a success.

The wide acceptance of digital repositories today in the eLearning field raises several interoperability issues. In this paper we present the interoperability features of a service oriented repository of learning objects called crimsonHex. An overwhelming problem in Math Curriculums in Higher Education Institutions (HEI), we are daily facing in the last decade, is the substantial differences in Math background of our students. When you try to transmit, engage and teach subjects/contents that your “audience” is unable to respond to and/or even understand what we are trying to convey, it is somehow frustrating. In this sense, the Math projects and other didactic strategies, developed through Learning Management System Moodle, which include an array of activities that combine higher order thinking skills with math subjects and technology, for students of HE, appear as remedial but important, proactive and innovative measures in order to face and try to overcome these considerable problems. In this paper we will present some of these strategies, developed in some organic units of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP). But, how “fruitful” are the endless number of hours teachers spent in developing and implementing these platforms? Do students react to them as we would expect? Do they embrace this opportunity to overcome their difficulties? How do they use/interact individually with LMS platforms? Can this environment that provides the teacher with many interesting tools to improve the teaching – learning process, encourages students to reinforce their abilities and knowledge? In what way do they use each available material – videos, interactive tasks, texts, among others? What is the best way to assess student’s performance in these online learning environments? Learning Analytics tools provides us a huge amount of data, but how can we extract “good” and helpful information from them? These and many other questions still remain unanswered but we look forward to get some help in, at least, “get some drafts” for them because we feel that this “learning analysis”, that tackles the path from the objectives to the actual results, is perhaps the only way we have to move forward in the “best” learning and teaching direction.

O estudo de caso tem por objetivo principal analisar e avaliar a utilização de um Ambiente de Aprendizagem Enriquecido pela Tecnologia (TELE) no Ensino Superior, através do que é normalmente designado de eLearning e, perceber, o impacto que estas metodologias estão a ter no ensino presencial, a forma como estão a ser usadas e de que forma alunos e professores têm sido confrontados com esta realidade. Especificamente visa analisar o impacto da implementação de um modelo de eLearning na aprendizagem e perceber a relação entre uma estratégia metodológica suportada pela LMS Moodle na sala de aula, as competências digitais e skills que os alunos têm e de que forma isso resulta em termos de ensino-aprendizagem. O Moodle foi a plataforma de aprendizagem selecionada enquanto suporte ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem na unidade curricular de Edição Multimédia do curso de Licenciatura em Comunicação Social e Cultural da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), com uma turma de 42 alunos no total. Por conseguinte, foi o ambiente usado para a interação entre os alunos e entre estes com o professor em espaço e tempo extra aula. Com o objetivo de cumprir os objetivos propostos recorreu-se a três instrumentos de recolha de dados: dois questionários aos alunos, em momentos distintos. Primeiro, procurou-se obter conhecimentos sobre as suas competências digitais e, num segundo momento, aferir sobre a perceção e o nível de satisfação dos alunos face ao modelo de aprendizagem implementado; observação não participante de sala de aula (estruturada e naturalista), delimitando-se as seguintes dimensões: estratégias operacionalizadas pelo professor, materiais/recursos e ferramentas utilizadas e práticas e atitudes do aluno; registos da plataforma pela análise das interações entre os alunos e destes com o professor através dos fóruns de discussão. O estudo permitiu atestar o impacto bastante positivo nos níveis de satisfação dos alunos e estabelecer uma relação eficaz entre a tecnologia e a aquisição de aprendizagens significativas: potenciou uma aprendizagem ativa, interativa e um contexto para o trabalho colaborativo; consequente capacidade autorregulatória da aprendizagem; promoveu o desenvolvimento da Literacia digital; possibilitou a adoção de metodologias de aprendizagem diversificadas; contribuiu para o aumento da participação, motivação e entusiasmo dos alunos.

This case study introduces our continuous work to enhance the virtual classroom in order to provide faculty and students with an environment open to their needs, compliant with learning standards and, therefore compatible with other e-learning environments, and based on open source software. The result is a modulable, sustainable and interoperable learning environment that can be adapted to different teaching and learning situations by incorporating the LMS integrated tools as well as wikis, blogs, forums and Moodle activities among others.

Se describen los requisitos, su estructura y se analiza su grado de utilización cuatro años después de su puesta en marcha, indicando los principales puntos débiles del sistema y las posibles aplicaciones complementarias para contrarrestarlas.

This research project strives to help the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) fully achieve the full benefits of pavement preservation through training on proper selection, design, and application of pavement preservation treatments. In some cases, there is a lack of training when conducting one of these steps and the objective of applying pavement preservation techniques is compromised. Extensive amounts of literature on pavement preservation exist, but a structured approach on how to train staff in selecting, designing, and applying pavement preservation techniques is lacking. The objective of this project was to develop a training-oriented learning management system to address pavement preservation treatments (chip seals, fog seals, slurry systems, and crack seals and fills) as they are dealt with during the phases of selection, design, and construction. Early in the project, it was critical to identify the staff divisions to be trained and the treatments to be included. Through several meetings with the Iowa DOT, three staff divisions were identified: maintenance staff (in charge of selection), design staff, and construction staff. In addition, the treatments listed above were identified as the focus of the study due to their common use. Through needs analysis questionnaires and meetings, the knowledge gap and training needs of the agency were identified. The training modules developed target the gap from the results of the needs analysis. The concepting (selection) training focuses on providing the tools necessary to help make proper treatment selection. The design training focuses on providing the information necessary on the treatment materials (mostly binders and aggregates) and how to make proper material selection. Finally, the construction training focuses on providing equipment calibration procedures, inspection responsibilities, and images of poor and best practices. The research showed that it is important to train each division staff (maintenance, design, and construction) separately, as each staff division has its own needs and interests. It was also preferred that each treatment was covered on an individual basis. As a result of the research, it is recommended to evaluate the performance of pavement preservation treatments pre- and post-training continuously to compare results and verify the effectiveness of the learning management system.

Työssä tarkastellaan oppimisalustoilla käytettäviä testikysymyksiä ja oppisisältöjä uudelleen-käytettävyyden ja siirrettävyyden näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena on selvittää, minkälaisia välineitä määrämuotoisten sisältöjen tuottamista varten on olemassa, ja miten niillä luodut materiaalit ovat siirrettävissä työvälineestä toiseen ja oppimisalustoille. Tutkittavana ovat sisällön paketointiin tarkoitetutSCORM- ja IMS Content Packaging -spesifikaatiot sekä kysymysten esittämiseen tarkoitettu IMS Question and Test Interoperability -spesifikaatio. Pääpaino työssäon selvittää, miten oppisisällöt ovat siirrettävissä WebCT- ja Moodle-alustojenvälillä. Tähän liittyen on luotu ohjeistus, miten yksittäiset tiedostot, kysymykset ja Sisältökokonaisuus-työkalulla koostetut sisällöt siirretään WebCT:ltä Moodleen.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan tieto- ja viestintätekniikan tuomaa lisäarvoa kon-taktiopetukseen sekä Moodle verkko-oppimisalustan hyödyntämistapoja opet-tajan, oppijanja työelämäyhteistyön näkökulmista. Tutkimuksessa on kaksi päätavoitetta: selvittää yleiset verkko-opetusmallit ja verkko-opetusmalleja tukevat työkalut sekä selvittää Etelä-Kymenlaakson am-mattiopistossa käytössä olevan Moodle verkko-oppimisalustan nykyistä laaja-alaisempaan käyttöönottoon liittyvät haasteet ja kehitystarpeet. Kokemusten pohjalta jälkimmäisen tavoitteen suurimmaksi yksittäiseksi haasteeksi nousee verkko-opintojakson aloitus. Opettaja joutuu verkko-opintojakson käynnistämi-sen yhteydessä tekemään liikaa monimutkaisiamäärittelyjä. Kehitystarpeissa puolestaan haetaan ratkaisuja kysymykseen; mitenverkko-oppimisalusta mahdollistaa työelämäyhteyksien parantamisen ja miten se palvelee paremmin oppijoita verkko-opintojaksojen löytämisen suhteen. Tutkimuksen tuloksena rakentui uusi tapa verkko-opintojaksojen luomiseenja kategorisointiin. Kehitetyn toimintatavan ansiosta opettajan ei tarvitse enää luoda opintojaksoa verkko-oppimisalustaan, vaan niiden aihiot luodaan ohjel-mallisesti oppilashallintojärjestelmästä saatavista tiedoista muunnosohjelman välityksellä. Opettajan tehtäväksi jää vain materiaalin tuottaminen ja kyseisellä opintojaksolla tarvitsemiensa työkalujen alustaminen. Uudella kategorisointita-valla ja mielikuvitusrikkaammilla työtilojen hyödyntämistavoilla saavutetaan seuraavat edut: järjestelmä palvelee paremmin työelämäyhteistyötä, oppijoille selkeytyy oma opintokokonaisuus paremmin ja oppijoiden sekä opettajien on helpompi löytää verkko-oppimisalustassa olevat opintojaksot.
