A fast, low-cost, convenient, and especially sensitive voltammetric screening approach for the study of the antioxidant properties of isoquercitrin and pedalitin from Pterogyne nitens is suggested in this work. These flavonoids were investigated for their redox properties using cyclic voltammetry in nonaqueous media using N,N-dimethylformamide and tetrabutylammonium tetrafluorborate as the supporting electrolyte, a glassy carbon working electrode, AglAgCl reference electrode, and Pt bare wire counter electrode. The comparative analysis of the activity of rutin has also been carried out. Moreover, combining HPLC with an electrochemical detector allowed qualitative and quantitative detection of micromolecules (e.g., isoquercitrin and pedalitin) that showed antioxidant activities. These results were then correlated to the inhibition of p-carotene bleaching determined by TLC autographic assay and to structural features of the flavonoids.

The application of adsorptive stripping potentiometry to the reductive detection of nucleic acids at mercury electrodes is reported. Compared to analogous voltammetric stripping modes, constant current potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) effectively addresses the hydrogen discharge background problem, and hence greatly improves the characteristics of the superimposed cytosine/adenine (CA) reduction peak. Compared to earlier schemes for trace measurements of nucleic acids at mercury or carbon electrodes that rely on anodic signals arising from the guanine residue, convenient quantitation can now be carried out in connection with the cytosine and adenine residues. Variables influencing the adsorptive PSA response are explored and optimized. With five minute accumulation, the detection limits for tRNA, ssDNA and dsDNA are 30 mu g l(-1), 60 mu g l(-1) and 2 mg l(-1), respectively. Such different values reflect the strong dependence of the PSA CA signal upon the nucleic-acid structure. This allows the quantitation of ssDNA or tRNA in the presence of dsDNA, and offers new possibilities for electrochemical studies of DNA structure and interactions.

The electrochemical behavior of SnO2-SbOx, based electrodes, with and without the addition of RuO2, was studied by cyclic voltammetry, service life measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 the physical characteristics of these materials were investigated using SEM, EDX and XRD. The resulting cyclic voltammograms obtained using SnO2-SbOx, and SnO2-SbOx-RuO2(x), x = 30, 5, 1 and 0.4 % showed that the OER overpotential decreased with the addition of RuO2. In the repetitive triangular potential voltammetry applied to the SnO2 electrode without and with RuO2 (1%), a higher anodic current is observed during the first potential scan; it is explained in terms of the oxidation of the Ti substrate. The addition of 1% RuO2 increased the service life from 8 to 20 hours at 10 mAcm(-2), while at 50 mAcm(-2) this increase was from 1 to 8 hours. AC Impedance diagrams obtained for the Ti/SnO2-SbOx and Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 electrodes at the rest potential and at a potential in the OER region can be explained by a single equivalent circuit containing two elements in series. The results showed that the charge transfer resistance and the resistance of the oxide film are lower in the oxide film containing RuO2. Surface analysis of Ti/SnO2-SbOx, revealed that it is relatively porous and formed by clusters of small particles. The Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 (1%) film is more compact, though. XRD analysis showed that a Sn1-xTixO2 oxide is formed on the Ti/SnO2-SbOx with 1% and without RuO2 electrodes.

The electrochemical behavior of metallic chromium in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions at different pH was studied by means of open-circuit potential vs. time measurements, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composition of the surface oxides was analyzed by XPS. For solutions with pH<3 the formation of a passive layer occurs via a dissolution/precipitation process while for pH>3 the mechanism changes. XPS analysis revealed that Cr2O3 basically constitutes the passive layer.

The Indanthrene Olive Green B (C.I. Vat Green 3; C.I. 69500), VG3 dye, a vat dye bearing an anthraquinonoid group and a ketonic group, can be detected by differential pulse voltammetry in alkaline solution using glassy carbon electrode. on the adsorbed form the dyes are reduced into three cathodic steps at -0.54 V, -0.65 V and -0.93 V vs Ag/AgCl. The leuco form generated after previous electrolysis at controlled potential of -1 V can be detected by voltammetry due to its reoxidation peak at -0.08 V. An analytical method is proposed for determining the vat dye using modified glassy carbon electrode by electrochemical activation in alkaline medium. Linear relationship was observed between l(Pu) vs concentration from I X 10(-5) mol L-1 to 6.0 X 10(-4) mol L-1. The detection limit was calculated to be 9.3 X 10(-6) mol L-1. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a halogenated aminoquinoline that presents wide biological activity, often being used as an antimalarial drug. The electrochemical reduction of HCQ was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry using glassy carbon electrodes. By cyclic voltammetry, in acid medium, only the cathodic peak was observed. The electrochemical behavior of this peak is dependent on pH and the electrodic process occurs through an ErCi mechanism. The electron number (le) consumed in the reduction of HCQ was obtained by chronoamperometry. A method for the electrochemical determination of HCQ in pharmaceutical tablets was developed using differential pulse voltammetry. The detection limit reached was 11.2 mug ml(-1) of HCQ with a relative standard deviation of 0.46%. A spectrophotometric study of HCQ has been also carried out utilizing a band at 343 nm. The obtained detection limit and the relative standard deviation were 0.1 mug ml(-1) and 0.36%, respectively. The electrochemical methods are sufficiently accurate and precise to be applied for HCQ determination, in laboratorial routine, which can be used to determine the drug at low level. The design and characteristics of a novel electrochemical system, which uses a drop as a renewable electroanalytical sensor, are described. This article describes the performance of the electrochemical system, the coupling of the experimental arrangement with flow injection technique and a demonstration of its applicability for the measurement of sulfide. The method is based on renewable drops of ferricyanide ions, buffered by borate. The ferrocyanide ions, product of the reaction between ferricyanide and sulfide ions, are oxidized on a platinum microelectrode and the current measured is related to sulfide concentration. The measurements can be done in continuous or static flow mode. In continuous mode, the detection limit is 5.0 x 10(-5) mol L-1.

Levodopa (L-dopa), the biological precursor of catecholamines, is the most widely prescribed drug in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The present work presents a proposal for the application of a gold screen-printed electrode an electrochemical sensor for monitoring L-dopa in stationary solution and a flow system. Using the electrooxidation of L-dopa at +0.63 V in acetate buffer pH 3.0 on a gold screen-printed electrode it is possible to obtain a linear calibration curve from 9.9 x 10(-5) to 1.2 x 10(-3) mol L-1 and a detection limit of 6.8 x 10(-5) mol L-1. Under amperometric conditions (E-app = 0.8 V; flow rate = 14.1 ml, min(-1); pH 3.0), an analytical calibration graph for L-dopa was obtained from 1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 6.6 x 10(-4) mol L-1 with a detection limit of 9.9 x 10(-7) mol L-1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of L-dopa in commercial dosage forms without any pre-treatment. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an electroanalytical method based on square-wave voltammetry (SWV) for the determination of the solvent blue 14 (SB-14) in fuel samples. The electrochemical reduction of SB-14 at glassy carbon electrode in a mixture of Britton-Robinson buffer with N,N-dimethyiformamide (1:1, v/v) presented a well-defined peak at-0.40 V vs. Ag/AgCl. All parameters of the SWV technique were optimized and the electroanalytical method presented a linear response from 1.0 x 10(-6) to 6.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 (r = 0.998) with a detection limit of 2.90 x 10(-7) mol L-1. The developed method was successfully utilized in the quantification of the dye SB-14 in kerosene and alcohol samples with average recovery from 93.00 to 98.10%.

Ti-Mo alloys from 4 to 20 Mo wt.% were arc-melted. Their compositions and surfaces were analyzed by EDX, XRF and SEM. The Mo mapping shows a homogeneous distribution for all alloys. The XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure of the alloys is sensitive to the Mo concentration; a mixture of the hexagonal alpha' and orthorhombic alpha '' phases was observed for the Ti-4Mo alloy, and the alpha '' phase is observed almost exclusively when the concentration of Mo added to the Ti reaches 6%. A significant retention of the beta phase is observed for the alloy containing 10% Mo, while at higher Mo concentrations (15% and 20%), retention of phase beta is only verified. Preliminary electrochemical studies have indicated a valve-metal behavior and good corrosion resistance in aerated Ringer solution for all alloys. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The cyclic voltammetric behavior of acetaldehyde and the derivatized product with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPHi) has been studied at a glassy carbon electrode. This study was used to optimize the best experimental conditions for its determination by high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation coupled with electrochemical detection. The acetaldehyde-2,4-dinitrophenyl.hydrazone (ADNPH) was eluted and separated by a reversed-phase column, C-18, under isocratic conditions with the mobile phase containing a binary mixture of methanol/LiCl(aq) at a concentration of 1.0 x 10(-3) M (80:20 v/v) and a flow rate of 1.0 mL min(-1). The optimum condition for the electrochemical detection of ADNPH was +1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl as a reference electrode. The proposed method was simple, rapid (analysis time 7 min) and sensitive (detection limit 3.80 mu g L-1) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1. It was also highly selective and reproducible [standard deviation 8.2% +/- 0.36 (n = 5)]. The analytical curve of ADNPH was linear over the range of 3-300 mg L-1 per injection (20 mu L), and the analytical recovery was > 99%.

A new methodology was developed for analysis of aldehydes and ketones in fuel ethanol by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to electrochemical detection. The electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymetkylfurfural, 2-furfuraldehyde, butyraldehyde, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone derivatized with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) at glassy carbon electrode present a well defined wave at +0.94 V; +0.99 V; +1.29 V; +1.15 V and +1.18 V, respectively which are the basis for its determination on electrochemical defector. The carbonyl compounds derivatized were separated by a reverse-phase column under isocratic conditions with a mobile phase containing a binary mixture of methanol /LiClO4(aq) at a concentration of 1.0 x 10(-3) mol L-1 (80:20 v/v) and a flow-rate of 1.1 mL min(-1). The optimum potential for the electrochemical detection of aldehydes-DNPH and ketones-DNPH was +1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The analytical curve of aldehydes-DNPH and ketones-DNPH presented linearity over the range 5.0 to 400.0 ng mL(-1), with detection limits of 1.7 to 2.0 ng mL(-1) and quantification limits from 5.0 to 6.2 ng mL(-1), using injection volume of 20 mu L. The proposed methodology was simple, low time-consuming (15 min/analysis) and presented analytical recovery higher than 95%.
