The young, tight, and low-mass binary TWA22AB: a new calibrator for evolutionary models? Orbit, spectral types, and temperature

Context. Tight binaries discovered in young, nearby associations are ideal targets for providing dynamical mass measurements to test the physics of evolutionary models at young ages and very low masses. Aims. We report the binarity of TWA22 for the first time. We aim at monitoring the orbit of this young and tight system to determine its total dynamical mass using an accurate distance determination. We also intend to characterize the physical properties (luminosity, effective temperature, and surface gravity) of each component based on near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations. Methods. We used the adaptive-optics assisted imager NACO to resolve the components, to monitor the complete orbit and to obtain the relative near-infrared photometry of TWA22 AB. The adaptive-optics assisted integral field spectrometer SINFONI was also used to obtain medium-resolution (R(lambda) = 1500-2000) spectra in JHK bands. Comparison with empirical and synthetic librairies were necessary for deriving the spectral type, the effective temperature, and the surface gravity for each component of the system. Results. Based on an accurate trigonometric distance (17.5 +/- 0.2 pc) determination, we infer a total dynamical mass of 220 +/- 21 M(Jup) for the system. From the complete set of spectra, we find an effective temperature T(eff) = 2900(-200)(+200) K for TWA22A and T(eff) = 2900(-100)(+200) for TWA22 B and surface gravities between 4.0 and 5.5 dex. From our photometry and an M6 +/- 1 spectral type for both components, we find luminosities of log(L/L(circle dot)) = -2.11 +/- 0.13 dex and log(L/L(circle dot)) = -2.30 +/- 0.16 dex for TWA22 A and B, respectively. By comparing these parameters with evolutionary models, we question the age and the multiplicity of this system. We also discuss a possible underestimation of the mass predicted by evolutionary models for young stars close to the substellar boundary.

Assessment of the Availability of Bone Volume for Grafting in the Donor Retromolar Region Using Computed Tomography: A Pilot Study

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the area and volume of bone available for grafting in a donor retromolar region using computed tomography (CT). Materials and Methods: Ten patients previously scanned by multislice CT were selected for evaluation. Images from partially and completely dentate patients at least 18 years of age were included in the study; those from patients with impacted or erupted third molars or intrabony lesions in the study area were not included. Computer software with appropriate tools was used to handle the images. Two calibrated observers made measurements separately. Safety margins in relation to the lingual cortex, the base of mandible, and the alveolar canal were established in each cross-section of the CTs. Measurements were done by using cross-sectional views, and the results were calculated after three-dimensional reconstruction, providing area and volume data. Results: The mean area of bone available for grafting was 8.12 cm(2) ( range, 0.00 to 13.60 cm(2)) and 8.32 cm(2) ( range, 0.00 to 14.30 cm(2)) for observers 1 and 2, respectively. Mean available bone volume for grafting was 0.79 cm(3) ( range, 0.00 to 1.50 cm(3)) for observer 1 and 0.85 cm(3) ( range, 0.00 to 1.60 cm(3)) for observer 2. Interobserver analysis showed substantial agreement. Conclusion: The retromolar region showed a wide variety of anatomic differences among patients. Three-dimensional multislice CT allows reproducible measurements of the area and volume of the retromolar region. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants 2010; 25: 374-378

Assessment of linear measurements of bone for implant sites in the presence of metallic artefacts using cone beam computed tomography and multislice computed tomography

The objective was to evaluate the influence of dental metallic artefacts on implant sites using multislice and cone-beam computed tomography techniques. Ten dried human mandibles were scanned twice by each technique, with and without dental metallic artefacts. Metallic restorations were placed at the top of the alveolar ridge adjacent to the mental foramen region for the second scanning. Linear measurements (thickness and height) for each cross-section were performed by a single examiner using computer software. All mandibles were analysed at both the right and the left mental foramen regions. For the multislice technique, dental metallic artefact produced an increase of 5% in bone thickness and a reduction of 6% in bone height; no significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected when comparing measurements performed with and without metallic artefacts. With respect to the cone-beam technique, dental metallic artefact produced an increase of 6% in bone thickness and a reduction of 0.68% in bone height. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed when comparing measurements performed with and without metallic artefacts. The presence of dental metallic artefacts did not alter the linear measurements obtained with both techniques, although its presence made the location of the alveolar bone crest more difficult.

Enzymology, structure, and dynamics of acetohydroxy acid isomeroreductase

Acetohydroxy acid isomeroreductase is a key enzyme involved in the biosynthetic pathway of the amino acids isoleucine, valine, and leucine. This enzyme is of great interest in agrochemical research because it is present only in plants and microorganisms, making it a potential target for specific herbicides and fungicides. Moreover, it catalyzes an unusual two-step reaction that is of great fundamental interest. With a view to characterizing both the mechanism of inhibition by potential herbicides and the complex reaction mechanism, various techniques of enzymology, molecular biology, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, and theoretical simulation have been used. The results and conclusions of these studies are described briefly in this paper.

A construção da marca visual e os media digitais enquanto temes

A construção de uma marca gráfica, signo que se pretende que identifique e sintetize uma entidade, deve ser consciente dos processos, objectivos e modus operandi que integram o seu contexto e tornam este tema ainda hoje um ponto central no design de identidade e no design de comunicação. Ainda assim, assistimos ao surgir de tendências que vão uniformizando várias marcas que procuram, passe o paradoxo, demarcar-se. Meme é um conceito originalmente publicado pelo biólogo Richard Dawkins (Dawkins, 1989), que significa ‘replicador’, sendo uma teoria alternativa para explicar a evolução humana (uma teoria que não depende dos genes, mas sim da noção de imitação: da noção de ideias que se reproduzem de pessoa para pessoa, quase como um vírus). O conceito vem da palavra grega mimeme e significa ‘aquilo que é imitado’. Este conceito foi desenvolvido por Susan Blackmore no livro The Meme Machine (1999) e, mais recentemente, esta autora introduz a ideia de teme – o meme tecnológico. Como explicar, por exemplo, que a recente imagem gráfica da NOS (2014) seja tão similar à da POV, criada por Paula Scher em 2007? E por sua vez, qual a razão da identidade visual da Optimus (magma, 2008) ser também, em certa medida, idêntica à da Nokia Trends Lab (criado por Greenspace), projecto do mesmo ramo de operação das telecomunicações? No modus operandi do trabalho de design de identidade entram em acção os media digitais, tanto no momento de concepção, como no momento de exibição e fruição das marcas gráficas. Assim, as aplicações, o software transformaram-se numa espécie de silent designers (conceito proposto por Gorb e Dumas em 1987), uma vez que são verdadeiros orientadores da resposta visual a um determinado problema: impulsionam direcções na linguagem visual do design, resultando em soluções semelhantes. Dada esta mudança de paradigmas que as novas tecnologias forjaram no zeitgeist do design, este artigo – baseado em parte da investigação de doutoramento em design – versa sobre a construção da marca gráfica e sobre a análise das categorias visuais que operam em cada signo gráfico da marca, bem como os medias digitais onde elas se inscrevem. Visualmente podemos constatar que as características dos nossos processos de percepção e as características dos meios de criação e transmissão das marcas actuam de forma a aproximar as soluções gráficas, resultando, por vezes, em temes. Com o objectivo de gerar debate académico sobre o tema da sintaxe e da retórica visual da marca gráfica, procuramos identificar e visualizar variáveis estruturais comuns das marcas realizadas com uma linguagem advinda do Estilo Internacional e das marcas mais recentes, digitais, fluídas e em sistema aberto, com a intenção de contribuir para implementar uma literacia visual que descodifique este signo icónico, dentro da actual realidade.

Claritromicina associada com pirímetamina na toxoplasmose cerebral - relato de dois casos

Os autores relatam a resposta terapêutica da claritromicina associada com pirímetamina em dois casos de toxoplasmose cerebral ocorridos em pacientes com Síndrome de Imunodeficiência Adquirida (SIDA). Nos dois casos o diagnóstico foi presuntivo, baseando-se nas manifestações clínicas e na presença de lesões expansivas hipercaptantes detectadas na tomografia computadorizada (TC) de crânio. Em ambos os casos, observou-se exantema com o uso da sulfadiazina e da clindamicina, razão pela qual tais medicamentos foram substituídos pela claritromicina (1,5 a 2g/dia) associada à pirímetamina (25mg/dia). A resposta terapêutica foi favorável nos dois casos com melhora das manifestações neurológicas e dos achados neurorradiológicos. Os autores sugerem que a associação claritromicina com pirímetamina pode ser útil como opção terapêutica na toxoplasmose cerebral em pacientes com SIDA que apresentam intolerância ou outra contra-indicação ao emprego das sulfonamidas.

Perfil sociodemográfico, epidemiológico e comportamental de mulheres infectadas pelo HTLV-1 em Salvador-Bahia, uma área endêmica para o HTLV

O objetivo foi descrever as características sociodemográficas, epidemiológicas e comportamentais de mulheres infectadas (64) e não infectadas (66) pelo HTLV-1 em Salvador, Bahia. O diagnóstico sorológico foi obtido por ELISA, WB e Imunofluorescência. Dados epidemiológicos e sociodemográficos foram coletados utilizando questionário padronizado. O Qui-quadrado ou teste de Fisher foi usado para dados categóricos e ANOVA ou Kruskall Wallis (3 grupos) e teste T ou Mann Whitney (2 grupos) para os dados contínuos. As variáveis associadas foram ajustadas por regressão logística. Mais da metade (57,8%) das mulheres soropositivas eram assintomáticas. As sintomáticas (com PET/MAH) tinham menor escolaridade. A comparação entre mulheres soropositivas e soronegativas mostrou que a hemotransfusão, a prática de sexo anal, coitarca antes dos 18 anos e ter mais de 3 parceiros sexuais na vida foram fatores de risco para infecção pelo HTLV-1. A prevenção da transmissão sexual e vertical (aleitamento materno) deve ser reforçada e triagem no pré-natal mandatória.

Educação para a sexualidade e para os afetos - "coisas a aprender no colo da minha mãe(?)"

A Educação para a Sexualidade deve englobar os domínios biológico, psicológico e social e iniciar-se em tenra idade. No domínio biológico incluem-se aprendizagens sobre o crescimento e desenvolvimento corporal, a diferenciação entre os dois sexos, a reprodução e a saúde e prevenção de doenças. No plano psicológico são fundamentais as questões relacionadas com a vivência de sentimentos e emoções, a autoestima, a imagem corporal e a construção da identidade sexual. Ao nível social desenvolvem-se as relações com os outros, as capacidades de negociação e resistência a pressões de pares, assim como a aprendizagem de normas e valores socioculturais e a sua mutação ao longo dos tempos. Se os Direitos da Criança incluem a educação e o acesso a informação e a saúde, esta é uma justificação suficiente para lhe facultar a resposta às questões que coloca sobre sexualidade. Por outro lado, também a não aprendizagem da sexualidade até aos 5 ou 6 anos pode explicar comportamentos pouco promotores de saúde e bem-estar a partir da adolescência (Dumas, 2010). De um ponto de vista informal podemos afirmar que este processo educativo se inicia ainda no período intrauterino. Numa perspetiva formal a sexualidade deve estar presente nos projetos educativos das crianças a partir do jardim-de-infância, momento em que a criança começa a interrogar-se e a interrogar os adultos sobre a sua origem. Porém, a ideia de demasiada precocidade está presente no discurso de muitos adultos independentemente do seu nível cultural e formativo. Os educadores receiam a abordagem do tema junto das crianças e desculpam-se com a não-aceitação por parte dos pais. No entanto, estas ideias são fantasmagóricas, pois dos projetos concretizados salienta-se a motivação das crianças e a satisfação e alívio por parte dos progenitores. O alívio resulta da libertação das emoções e desconforto que um diálogo com a criança carrega por estar imbuído de afetividade, numa relação saudável entre pais e filhos. Daí a razão da questão – “coisas a aprender no colo da minha mãe(?).

Myocardial repair with long-term and low-dose administration of a nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor. Myofibroblasts, type III collagen and fibronectin

OBJECTIVE: To study the healing process of the myocardium in hypertensive rats undergoing inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis. METHODS: Two groups of animals were studied: one received L-NAME, 12mg/kg/day, and the other was a control group. The presence of type III collagen, fibronectin, and alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive cells was assessed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Fibronectin was seen in both early and late lesions, while type III collagen was seen mainly in areas of incomplete healing, situated among myocytes and around the intramyocardial branches of the coronary arteries. Areas representing early and late lesions showed a population of spindle-shaped cells. Immunohistochemistry showed that these cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin. CONCLUSION: In the myocardium of hypertensive rats, the alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive cells are related to the accumulation of type III collagen and fibronectin in the areas of myocardial damage.

O corpo extremo (sobre 'A Morte sem Mestre' de Herberto Helder)

Observada pelo ângulo da continuidade com que desde sempre o texto herbertiano se deu a ler, A Morte sem Mestre corresponde, à partida, a um ponto extremo: o da forçada interrupção de um corpo pela brutal emergência do fim, a liquidação da sua biologia. O livro, ele mesmo, constitui como tal um lugar-limite que acolhe um pensamento-limite e sobre o limite, lugar e pensamento que tendem assim a um inevitável fora de cena, a um radical impudor que é também afirmação de um impoder. Se o lermos sobre o traço do tempo, como aqui nos propomos fazer, na extremidade 'ad quem' do itinerário orgânico da escrita herbertiana, como etapa seguinte de um trajeto de irrevogável corrupção e ruína, provavelmente - e num sentido estritamente demoníaco-, A Morte sem Mestre não poderia deixar de ser o que é: mais do que esse objeto estranho que chocou a crítica, um objeto desastroso, 'exemplum' perfeitamente imperfeito de uma espécie de corpo-desastre que se apresenta como postergação (calculada?) do fulgor poético, assumindo essa «tarefa prostitucional da poesia» que legitimamente lhe apontou António Guerreiro (2014), colocando-a sob a presumível égide de Sade ou de Bataille.

Alterações cardiovasculares na síndrome da apnéia obstrutiva do sono

A síndrome da apnéia obstrutiva do sono (SAHOS) é uma condição prevalente na população, associada a maior risco cardiovascular, freqüentemente não-diagnosticada. O reconhecimento da síndrome requer alto grau de suspeita clínica, especialmente por cardiologistas, e pode ser confirmada por meio da polissonografia. O tratamento da síndrome com o uso de CPAP (pressão positiva na via aérea superior) é altamente eficaz, melhorando o padrão respiratório durante o sono, instituindo o sono reparador e, dessa forma, otimizando a qualidade de vida desses pacientes, além de atenuar ou reverter muitas das complicações cardiovasculares relacionadas a SAHOS. Este artigo aborda a fisiopatologia e os aspectos clínicos das comorbidades cardiovasculares associadas à síndrome.

Perfil cardiovascular em pacientes com apneia obstrutiva do sono

FUNDAMENTO: Apneia Obstrutiva do Sono (AOS) é um fator de risco para várias condições cardiovasculares incluindo aumento na mortalidade cardiovascular. Sendo assim, é essencial o conhecimento das principais repercussões cardiovasculares dos distúrbios respiratórios do sono durante uma avaliação clínica. OBJETIVO: Analisar as características cardiovasculares de pacientes com AOS. MÉTODOS: Pacientes submetidos a polissonografia basal foram consecutivamente selecionados do banco de dados do Instituto do Sono entre março de 2007 e março de 2009. Todos os pacientes foram orientados a comparecer ao ambulatório para coleta de sangue, exame físico, eletrocardiograma de 12 derivações, espirometria, teste cardiopulmonar em esteira ergométrica e ecocardiograma transtorácico. O estudo foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética e pesquisa e registrado no site http://clinicaltrials.gov/ sob o número: NCT00768625. RESULTADOS: Foram analisados 261 pacientes e 108 controles. As principais características dos pacientes com AOS foram: obesidade, hipertensão, baixos níveis plasmáticos de lipoproteínas de alta densidade (HDL) e aumento no diâmetro do átrio esquerdo quando comparados com controles (3,75 ± 0,42; 3,61 ± 0,41, p = 0,001), respectivamente. Essas características associadas correspondem a um acréscimo de 16,6 vezes na probabilidade de ocorrência de AOS independentemente do relato de algum sintoma dessa desordem, como sonolência ou ronco. CONCLUSÃO: Na amostra avaliada, o perfil cardiovascular dos pacientes com AOS mais encontrado foi: obesidade, hipertensão arterial, baixos níveis plasmáticos de HDL e átrio esquerdo com diâmetro aumentado.
