In the past years, Software Architecture has attracted increased attention by academia and industry as the unifying concept to structure the design of complex systems. One particular research area deals with the possibility of reconfiguring architectures to adapt the systems they describe to new requirements. Reconfiguration amounts to adding and removing components and connections, and may have to occur without stopping the execution of the system being reconfigured. This work contributes to the formal description of such a process. Taking as a premise that a single formalism hardly ever satisfies all requirements in every situation, we present three approaches, each one with its own assumptions about the systems it can be applied to and with different advantages and disadvantages. Each approach is based on work of other researchers and has the aesthetic concern of changing as little as possible the original formalism, keeping its spirit. The first approach shows how a given reconfiguration can be specified in the same manner as the system it is applied to and in a way to be efficiently executed. The second approach explores the Chemical Abstract Machine, a formalism for rewriting multisets of terms, to describe architectures, computations, and reconfigurations in a uniform way. The last approach uses a UNITY-like parallel programming design language to describe computations, represents architectures by diagrams in the sense of Category Theory, and specifies reconfigurations by graph transformation rules.

This article addresses the problem of obtaining reduced complexity models of multi-reach water delivery canals that are suitable for robust and linear parameter varying (LPV) control design. In the first stage, by applying a method known from the literature, a finite dimensional rational transfer function of a priori defined order is obtained for each canal reach by linearizing the Saint-Venant equations. Then, by using block diagrams algebra, these different models are combined with linearized gate models in order to obtain the overall canal model. In what concerns the control design objectives, this approach has the advantages of providing a model with prescribed order and to quantify the high frequency uncertainty due to model approximation. A case study with a 3-reach canal is presented, and the resulting model is compared with experimental data. © 2014 IEEE.

This study on middle Miocene Charophytes from the Tagus'basin indicates the presence of two species. hitherto undescribed from these strata in Portugal, Correlation diagrams of height and width of gyrogonite demonstrate that the populations of Nitellopsis (Tectochara) etrusca from the localities Póvoa de Santarém and Pêro Filho are identical to that from La Grenatière (Hérault, France), The population of Lychnothamnus duplicicarinatus from Tremês is identical to that already known from Anwill (Switzerland). The age of this flora is therefore suggested as being the upper part of the middle Miocene. The results of Charophyte studies are in accordance with stratigraphical conclusions from previously conducted mammalian studies (Antunes and Mein), A table showing the distribution of species in the three portuguese localities is given.

The definition and programming of distributed applications has become a major research issue due to the increasing availability of (large scale) distributed platforms and the requirements posed by the economical globalization. However, such a task requires a huge effort due to the complexity of the distributed environments: large amount of users may communicate and share information across different authority domains; moreover, the “execution environment” or “computations” are dynamic since the number of users and the computational infrastructure change in time. Grid environments, in particular, promise to be an answer to deal with such complexity, by providing high performance execution support to large amount of users, and resource sharing across different organizations. Nevertheless, programming in Grid environments is still a difficult task. There is a lack of high level programming paradigms and support tools that may guide the application developer and allow reusability of state-of-the-art solutions. Specifically, the main goal of the work presented in this thesis is to contribute to the simplification of the development cycle of applications for Grid environments by bringing structure and flexibility to three stages of that cycle through a commonmodel. The stages are: the design phase, the execution phase, and the reconfiguration phase. The common model is based on the manipulation of patterns through pattern operators, and the division of both patterns and operators into two categories, namely structural and behavioural. Moreover, both structural and behavioural patterns are first class entities at each of the aforesaid stages. At the design phase, patterns can be manipulated like other first class entities such as components. This allows a more structured way to build applications by reusing and composing state-of-the-art patterns. At the execution phase, patterns are units of execution control: it is possible, for example, to start or stop and to resume the execution of a pattern as a single entity. At the reconfiguration phase, patterns can also be manipulated as single entities with the additional advantage that it is possible to perform a structural reconfiguration while keeping some of the behavioural constraints, and vice-versa. For example, it is possible to replace a behavioural pattern, which was applied to some structural pattern, with another behavioural pattern. In this thesis, besides the proposal of the methodology for distributed application development, as sketched above, a definition of a relevant set of pattern operators was made. The methodology and the expressivity of the pattern operators were assessed through the development of several representative distributed applications. To support this validation, a prototype was designed and implemented, encompassing some relevant patterns and a significant part of the patterns operators defined. This prototype was based in the Triana environment; Triana supports the development and deployment of distributed applications in the Grid through a dataflow-based programming model. Additionally, this thesis also presents the analysis of a mapping of some operators for execution control onto the Distributed Resource Management Application API (DRMAA). This assessment confirmed the suitability of the proposed model, as well as the generality and flexibility of the defined pattern operators

The Author presents a synopsis about the post-Paleozoic igneous activity in continental Portugal. Subvolcanic massifs of Sintra, Sines and Monchique and the basaltic complex of Lisbon-Mafra are interpreted. The large network of dikes and sills occuring at north of Tagus river in Lisbon- Torres Vedras region as the dikes of Algarve and also those of diapiric formation are studied and compared. Also the doleritic dikes cuting the Hesperic Massif and the Great dike of Alentejo are studied. The Author presents an attempt of petrological and geochemical correlation-among these post-Paleozoic igneous rocks. For this more than 350 chemical analysis are used in order to elaborate several diagrams and some general conclusions are derived from them. The correlation between the origin of these igneous rocks and the opening of North Atlantic and the counter-clockwise rotation of the Iberia are also tried.

This paper concerns dynamics and bifurcations properties of a class of continuous-defined one-dimensional maps, in a three-dimensional parameter space: Blumberg's functions. This family of functions naturally incorporates a major focus of ecological research: the Allee effect. We provide a necessary condition for the occurrence of this phenomenon, associated with the stability of a fixed point. A central point of our investigation is the study of bifurcations structure for this class of functions. We verified that under some sufficient conditions, Blumberg's functions have a particular bifurcations structure: the big bang bifurcations of the so-called "box-within-a-box" type, but for different kinds of boxes. Moreover, it is verified that these bifurcation cascades converge to different big bang bifurcation curves, where for the corresponding parameter values are associated distinct attractors. This work contributes to clarify the big bang bifurcation analysis for continuous maps. To support our results, we present fold and flip bifurcations curves and surfaces, and numerical simulations of several bifurcation diagrams.

Density-dependent effects, both positive or negative, can have an important impact on the population dynamics of species by modifying their population per-capita growth rates. An important type of such density-dependent factors is given by the so-called Allee effects, widely studied in theoretical and field population biology. In this study, we analyze two discrete single population models with overcompensating density-dependence and Allee effects due to predator saturation and mating limitation using symbolic dynamics theory. We focus on the scenarios of persistence and bistability, in which the species dynamics can be chaotic. For the chaotic regimes, we compute the topological entropy as well as the Lyapunov exponent under ecological key parameters and different initial conditions. We also provide co-dimension two bifurcation diagrams for both systems computing the periods of the orbits, also characterizing the period-ordering routes toward the boundary crisis responsible for species extinction via transient chaos. Our results show that the topological entropy increases as we approach to the parametric regions involving transient chaos, being maximum when the full shift R(L)(infinity) occurs, and the system enters into the essential extinction regime. Finally, we characterize analytically, using a complex variable approach, and numerically the inverse square-root scaling law arising in the vicinity of a saddle-node bifurcation responsible for the extinction scenario in the two studied models. A dissertação descreve o levantamento e otimização do processo de fabrico de uma peça plástica para um automóvel. A otimização deste processo produtivo tem em vista a rentabilização de recursos humanos, a redução de custos associados e a redução de atividades ao longo do processo, tais como armazenamento de produto semiacabado, uma vez que este deixa de existir, a eliminação de fluxos logísticos e a eliminação do posto de montagem de componentes desta peça. A metodologia utilizada neste projeto centra-se na aplicação de ferramentas que permitem a análise e melhoria de processos produtivos, tais como o diagrama de processo, o diagrama spaghetti, o PDCA, a cronometragem dos tempos por tarefa e a aplicação de uma heurística para o balanceamento do futuro posto de trabalho da peça em estudo. O diagrama de processo, o diagrama de spaghetti e a cronometragem dos tempos por tarefas mostraram o estado atual do processo produtivo. Da análise do atual estado verifica-se que existe muito desperdício de mão-de-obra nas duas estações de trabalho, injeção e montagem. A eliminação do posto de trabalho exclusivo para montagem e junção dos processos de injeção e montagem no mesmo posto de trabalho, com a aplicação de uma heurística para balanceamento do novo posto de trabalho, demonstra que os ganhos são muito significativos. A aplicação do ciclo PDCA, na base da qual está a elaboração de um plano de ações, tornará esta mudança possível e bem-sucedida. A intenção deste projeto é demonstrar que o estado atual pode sempre ser melhorado se se usarem as ferramentas corretas para análise e proposta de melhorias que trarão ganhos à empresa a curto prazo. Usando esta sugestão, a empresa poderá dar início a um novo ciclo em que o espírito de melhoria esteja presente todos os dias em toda a organização.

Fractional calculus (FC) is no longer considered solely from a mathematical viewpoint, and is now applied in many emerging scientific areas, such as electricity, magnetism, mechanics, fluid dynamics, and medicine. In the field of dynamical systems, significant work has been carried out proving the importance of fractional order mathematical models. This article studies the electrical impedance of vegetables and fruits from a FC perspective. From this line of thought, several experiments are developed for measuring the impedance of botanical elements. The results are analyzed using Bode and polar diagrams, which lead to electrical circuit models revealing fractional-order behaviour.
