[Excerpt] Hydroxyapatite Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 (HAp) has been widely used for biomedical purposes because of its exceptional biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconductivity [1]. As these properties are directly related to HAp particles characteristics (size, morphology and purity), a very good control of the reaction conditions is required to obtain particles with the desired properties. Usually, HAp is synthesized by wet chemical precipitation in stirred tank batch reactors that often lead to inconsistencies in product specifications due to their low mixing efficiency [2]. (...)

In the present paper the authors describe the male and female genitalia of various species of Zelurus (=Spiniger). There were not always obtained reliable specific characters, specially in nearly related species. Futhermore there were studied 59 species and subspecies, from Dutch Guiana, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Argentine. New locality records and synonymic notes are given and some allotypes are designated. Eight species and two subspecies, from Brazil and Argentine, proved to new to science.

The author studies 10 species of the Tribu Cuphoceratini, belonging to the genera Ccrpecrypta Townsend, 1908, Cyanopsis Townsend, 1917, Spanipalpus Townsend, 1931, Neocuphocera Townsend, 1927, Beskiocephala Townsend, 1916 and Deopalpus Townsend, 1908. Eight species are identified with previously described species and two species are considered new to science: Neocuphocera aurifacies sp. n. and Deopalpus reinhardi sp. n. The characteristics of the new species are chiefly founded in the male genitalia. Generic definitions are based on the following characters: presence or absence of ocellar bristles, shape and relative length of antennal articles and arrangement of the head bristles in both sexes. The material is located in the Institute Oswaldo Cruz collections, Guanabara, Brazil.

In his timely article, Cherniss offers his vision for the future of "Emotional Intelligence" (EI). However, his goal of clarifying the concept by distinguishing definitions from models and his support for "Emotional and Social Competence" (ESC) models will, in our opinion, not make the field advance. To be upfront, we agree that emotions are important for effective decision-making, leadership, performance and the like; however, at this time, EI and ESC have not yet demonstrated incremental validity over and above IQ and personality tests in meta-analyses (Harms & Credé, 2009; Van Rooy & Viswesvaran, 2004). If there is a future for EI, we see it in the ability model of Mayer, Salovey and associates (e.g, Mayer, Caruso, & Salovey, 2000), which detractors and supporters agree holds the most promise (Antonakis, Ashkanasy, & Dasborough, 2009; Zeidner, Roberts, & Matthews, 2008). With their use of quasi-objective scoring measures, the ability model grounds EI in existing frameworks of intelligence, thus differentiating itself from ESC models and their self-rated trait inventories. In fact, we do not see the value of ESC models: They overlap too much with current personality models to offer anything new for science and practice (Zeidner, et al., 2008). In this commentary we raise three concerns we have with Cherniss's suggestions for ESC models: (1) there are important conceptual problems in both the definition of ESC and the distinction of ESC from EI; (2) Cherniss's interpretation of neuroscience findings as supporting the constructs of EI and ESC is outdated, and (3) his interpretation of the famous marshmallow experiment as indicating the existence of ESCs is flawed. Building on the promise of ability models, we conclude by providing suggestions to improve research in EI.

Promoting health both physical and mental in the community is part of the ethos of Moville FRC and the Community Garden is an important part of our programme. It encourages people to grow their own food and cook and eat healthily. An important aspect of the Community Garden is to promote neighbourliness, combat isolation and to give people the opportunity to work together to improve their community. Moville is a small town in North Donegal. The garden is situated in the middle of the community between three housing estates.It has 30 raised beds and a large shed. We are hoping to develop an adjoining site for potatoes and fruit trees. We run gardening classes during Spring/Summer each year. Participants in the Community Garden are drawn from all sections of the community, families, young and old, unemployed, people with disabilities. CHANGE is a multi-faceted programme which seeks to transform the way lone parents think about food. The programme focuses on education, health and the affordability of healthy food for lone parents, as a particularly disadvantaged low-income group. The key activities include training programmes for lone parents and a community garden which engages the wider community. Five training programmes will be developed over the three years; Healthy Eating (basic and advanced), Food Growing, Community Gardening and Community Resilience The community garden is supported by Northside Partnership, Coolock Development Council and Sphere 17 regional youth service, who are all represented on the steering group and contribute some human resources to maintaining and developing the garden. Integration in strategic alliances : a conceptual framework of IT use in marketing as NPD key factor

En una economia basada en el coneixement, la innovació del producte es considera un factor clau a l'hora de determinar la competitivitat, la productivitat i el creixement d'una companyia. No obstant això, l'experiència de les companyies demostra la necessitat d'un nou model de gestió de la innovació del producte: una gestió basada en el màrqueting, en què la cooperació i l'ús intensiu de les tecnologies de la informació i de la comunicació (TIC) són especialment importants. En els darrers anys, la bibliografia sobre màrqueting ha analitzat el paper de la cooperació en l'èxit del procés d'innovació. No obstant això, fins ara pocs treballs han estudiat el paper que té l'ús de les TIC en el màrqueting en l'èxit del desenvolupament de nous productes (NPD, New Product Development en anglès). És una omissió curiosa, tenint en compte que el nou entorn competitiu és definit per una economia i una societat basades principalment en l'ús intensiu de les TIC i del coneixement. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és investigar el paper que l'ús de les TIC en el màrqueting té en el procés de desenvolupament de nous productes, com a element que reforça la integració d'agents al projecte, afavorint l'establiment de relacions dirigides a la cooperació i l'adquisició d'intel·ligència de mercat útil en el procés de desenvolupament de nous productes. L'estudi d'una mostra de 2.038 companyies de tots els sectors de l'activitat econòmica a Catalunya ens permet contrastar hipòtesis inicials i establir un perfil de companyia innovadora basat en les importants relacions que hi ha entre la innovació, l'ús de TIC en el màrqueting i la integració. Sobresurten dues idees en la nostra anàlisi. En primer lloc, l'ús intensiu de les TIC en el màrqueting fa que la companyia sigui més innovadora, ja que percep que el seu ús ajuda a superar barreres a la innovació i accelera els processos, que es tornen més eficients. En segon lloc, incrementant l'ús de les TIC en el màrqueting es fa augmentar la predisposició de la companyia a integrar agents particulars en l'entorn de negoci en el desenvolupament del procés d'innovació i a col·laborar-hi, de manera que es millora el grau d'adaptació del nou producte a les demandes del mercat.

Two snapshot surveys to establish the diversity and ecological preferences of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in the terra firme primary rain forest surrounding the Tiputini Biodiversity Station in the UNESCO Yasuní Biosphere Reserve of eastern Amazonian Ecuador were carried out in November 1998 and May 1999. The mosquito fauna of this region is poorly known; the focus of this study was to obtain high quality link-reared specimens that could be used to unequivocally confirm species level diversity through integrated systematic study of all life stages and DNA sequences. A total of 2,284 specimens were preserved; 1,671 specimens were link-reared with associated immature exuviae, all but 108 of which are slide mounted. This study identified 68 unique taxa belonging to 17 genera and 27 subgenera. Of these, 12 are new to science and 37 comprise new country records. DNA barcodes [658-bp of the mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase ( COI ) I gene] are presented for 58 individuals representing 20 species and nine genera. DNA barcoding proved useful in uncovering and confirming new species and we advocate an integrated systematics approach to biodiversity studies in future. Associated bionomics of all species collected are discussed. An updated systematic checklist of the mosquitoes of Ecuador (n = 179) is presented for the first time in 60 years.

Les melanines són un grup heterogeni de polímers producte de reaccions enzimàtiques en els teixits vegetals que contenen compostos fenòlics o polifenòlics. Estudis recents han descobert algunes propietats benèfiques de les melanines sobre la salut, tals com antioxidants, antiinflamatòries, immunològiques i propietats anti-tumorals. Així, no només la seva eliminació ha de ser examinada, sinó que també podria considerar-se la seva addició a aliments funcionals de nova creació. D’aquesta manera, es requereix conèixer el mecanisme cinètic de la lanogènesi abans de la seva possible utilització industrial. S’ha desenvolupat un model cinètic per explicar la formació de melanina a partir de L-tirosina utilitzant polifenol oxidasa d’Agaricus bisporus i monitoritzant l'absorbància de la solució. Aquesta expressió permet descriure la formació de melanina en funció del temps de reacció i obtenir alguns paràmetres importants que defineixen el producte, com el coeficient d'extinció. L’absorbància comença a créixer després d'un període de latència en què es produeixen productes intermedis incolors. El coeficient d'extinció dels productes resultants no és un valor constant, perquè depèn de les condicions de cada experiment. La tirosinasa tingué un menor efecte catalitzador sobre la L-tirosina (primera reacció que catalitza), que sobre L-DOPA (segona reacció).

Abstract A prospective 1-year follow-up study in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) cancer patients was carried out one year after radiotherapy to assess the effect of varying consumption of ω3 fatty acid according to whether they consumed more or less than the 50th percentile of ω3 fatty acids. Clinical, analytical, inflammatory (CRP and IL-6), and oxidative variables (TAC, GPx, GST, and SOD) were evaluated. The study comprised 31 patients (87.1% men), with a mean age of 61.3 ± 9.1 years. Hematological variables showed significant differences in the patients with a lower consumption of ω3 fatty acids. A lower mortality and longer survival were found in the group with ω3 fatty acid consumption ≥50th percentile but the differences were not significant. No significant difference was reached in toxicity, inflammation, and oxidative stress markers. The group with ω3 fatty acid consumption <50th percentile significantly experienced more hematological and immune changes.
