Automated Production Systems Development involves aspects concerning the integration of technological components that exist on the market, such as: Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), robot manipulators, various sensors and actuators, image processing systems, communication networks and collaborative supervisory systems; all integrated into a single application. This paper proposes an automated platform for experimentation, implemented through typical architecture for Automated Production Systems, which integrates the technological components described above, in order to allow researchers and students to carry out practical laboratory activities. These activities will complement the theoretical knowledge acquired by the students in the classroom, thus improving their training and professional skills. A platform designed using this generic structure will allow users to work within an educational environment that reflects most aspects found in Industrial Automated Manufacturing Systems, such as technology integration, communication networks, process control and production management. In addition, this platform offers the possibility complete automated process of control and supervision via remote connection through the internet (WebLab), enabling knowledge sharing between different teaching and research groups.

The aim of this study is to develop a new enzymeless electroanalytical method for the indirect quantification of creatinine from urine sample. This method is based on the electrochemical monitoring of picrate anion reduction at a glassy carbon electrode in an alkaline medium before and after it has reacted with creatinine (Jaffe's reaction). By using the differential pulse voltammetry technique under the optimum experimental conditions (step potential, amplitude potential, reaction time, and temperature), a linear analytical curve was obtained for concentrations of creatinine ranging from 1 to 80 mu mol L-1, with a detection limit of 380 nmol L-1. This proposed method was used to measure creatinine in human urine without the interference of most common organic species normally present in biological fluids (e.g., uric acid, ascorbic acid, glucose, and phosphocreatinine). The results obtained using urine samples were highly similar to the results obtained using the reference spectrophotometric method (at a 95% confidence level). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique combined with field-effect transistor (FET) based sensors has enabled the production of pH-sensitive platforms with potential application in biosensors. A variation of the FET architecture, so called separative extended gate FET (SEGFET) devices, are promise as an alternative to conventional ion sensitive FET (ISFET). SEGFET configuration exhibits the advantage of combining the field-effect concept with organic and inorganic materials directly adsorbed on the extended gate, allowing the test of new pH-sensitive materials in a simple and low cost way. In this communication, poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPI) and TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-np) were assembled onto gold-covered substrates via layer-by-layer technique to produce a low cost SEGFET pH sensor. The sensor presented good pH sensitivity, ca. 57 mV pH(-1), showing that our strategy has potential advantages to fabricate low cost pH-sensing membranes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this manuscript, an automatic setup for screening of microcystins in surface waters by employing photometric detection is described. Microcystins are toxins delivered by cyanobacteria within an aquatic environment, which have been considered strongly poisonous for humans. For that reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed a provisional guideline value for drinking water of 1 mu g L-1. In this work, we developed an automated equipment setup, which allows the screening of water for concentration of microcystins below 0.1 mu g V. The photometric method was based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the analytical signal was monitored at 458 nm using a homemade LED-based photometer. The proposed system was employed for the detection of microcystins in rivers and lakes waters. Accuracy was assessed by processing samples using a reference method and applying the paired t-test between results. No significant difference at the 95% confidence level was observed. Other useful features including a linear response ranging from 0.05 up to 2.00 mu g L-1 (R-2 =0.999) and a detection limit of 0.03 mu g L-1 microcystins were achieved. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Gunshot residues (GSR) can be used in forensic evaluations to obtain information about the type of gun and ammunition used in a crime. In this work, we present our efforts to develop a promising new method to discriminate the type of gun [four different guns were used: two handguns (0.38 revolver and 0.380 pistol) and two long-barrelled guns (12-calibre pump-action shotgun and 0.38 repeating rifle)] and ammunition (five different types: normal, semi-jacketed, full-jacketed, green, and 3T) used by a suspect. The proposed approach is based on information obtained from cyclic voltammograms recorded in solutions containing GSR collected from the hands of the shooters, using a gold microelectrode; the information was further analysed by non-supervised pattern-recognition methods [(Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA)]. In all cases (gun and ammunition discrimination), good separation among different samples in the score plots and dendrograms was achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Increasingly stringent exhaust emission limits and higher fuel economy are the main drivers of the engine development process. As a consequence, the complexity of the propulsion units and its subsystems increase, due to the extensive use of sensors and actuators needed to obtain a precise control over the combustion phase. Since engine calibration process consumes most of the development time, new tools and methodologies are needed to shorten the development time and increase the performance attainable. Real time combustion analysis, based on the in-cylinder pressure signal, can significantly improve the calibration of the engine control strategies and the development of new algorithms, giving instantaneous feedback on the engine behavior. A complete combustion analysis and diagnosis system has been developed, capable of evaluating the most important indicators about the combustion process, such as indicated mean effective pressure, heat release, mass fraction burned and knock indexes. Such a tool is built on top of a flexible, modular and affordable hardware platform, capable of satisfying the requirements needed for accuracy and precision, but also enabling the use directly on-board the vehicle, due to its small form factor.

A control-oriented model of a Dual Clutch Transmission was developed for real-time Hardware In the Loop (HIL) applications, to support model-based development of the DCT controller. The model is an innovative attempt to reproduce the fast dynamics of the actuation system while maintaining a step size large enough for real-time applications. The model comprehends a detailed physical description of hydraulic circuit, clutches, synchronizers and gears, and simplified vehicle and internal combustion engine sub-models. As the oil circulating in the system has a large bulk modulus, the pressure dynamics are very fast, possibly causing instability in a real-time simulation; the same challenge involves the servo valves dynamics, due to the very small masses of the moving elements. Therefore, the hydraulic circuit model has been modified and simplified without losing physical validity, in order to adapt it to the real-time simulation requirements. The results of offline simulations have been compared to on-board measurements to verify the validity of the developed model, that was then implemented in a HIL system and connected to the TCU (Transmission Control Unit). Several tests have been performed: electrical failure tests on sensors and actuators, hydraulic and mechanical failure tests on hydraulic valves, clutches and synchronizers, and application tests comprehending all the main features of the control performed by the TCU. Being based on physical laws, in every condition the model simulates a plausible reaction of the system. The first intensive use of the HIL application led to the validation of the new safety strategies implemented inside the TCU software. A test automation procedure has been developed to permit the execution of a pattern of tests without the interaction of the user; fully repeatable tests can be performed for non-regression verification, allowing the testing of new software releases in fully automatic mode.

Die Kombination magnetischer Nanopartikel (NP) mit temperatursensitiven Polymeren führt zur Bildung neuer Komposit-Materialien mit interessanten Eigenschaften, die auf vielfältige Weise genutzt werden können. Mögliche Anwendungsgebiete liegen in der magnetischen Trennung, der selektiven Freisetzung von Medikamenten, dem Aufbau von Sensoren und Aktuatoren. Als Polymerkomponente können z.B. Hydrogele dienen. Die Geschwindigkeit der Quellgradänderung mittels externer Stimuli kann durch eine Reduzierung des Hydrogelvolumens erhöht werden, da das Quellen ein diffusionskontrollierter Prozess ist. rnIm Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde ein durch ultraviolettes Licht vernetzbares Hydrogel aus N-isopropylacrylamid, Methacrylsäure und dem Vernetzer 4-Benzoylphenylmethacrylat hergestellt (PNIPAAm-Hydrogel) und mit magnetischen Nanopartikeln aus Magnetit (Fe3O4) kombiniert. Dabei wurde die Temperatur- und die pH-Abhängigkeit des Quellgrades im Hinblick auf die Verwendung als nanomechanische Cantilever Sensoren (NCS) untersucht. Desweiteren erfolgte eine Charakterisierung durch Oberflächenplasmonen- und optischer Wellenleitermoden-Resonanz Spektroskopie (SPR/OWS). Die daraus erhaltenen Werte für den pKa-Wert und die lower critical solution Temperatur (LCST) stimmten mit den bekannten Literaturwerten überein. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass eine stärkere Vernetzung zu einer geringeren LCST führt. Die Ergebnisse mittels NCS wiesen zudem auf einen skin-effect während des Heizens von höher vernetzten Polymeren hin.rnDie Magnetit Nanopartikel wurden ausgehend von Eisen(II)acetylacetonat über eine Hochtemperaturreaktion synthetisiert. Durch Variation der Reaktionstemperatur konnte die Größe der hergestellten Nanopartikel zwischen 3.5 und 20 nm mit einer Größenverteilung von 0.5-2.5 nm eingestellt werden. Durch geeignete Oberflächenfunktionalisierung konnten diese in Wasser stabilisiert werden. Dazu wurde nach zwei Strategien verfahren: Zum einen wurden die Nanopartikel mittels einer Silika-Schale funktionalisiert und zum anderen Zitronensäure als Tensid eingesetzt. Wasserstabilität ist vor allem für biologische Anwendungen wünschenswert. Die magnetischen Partikel wurden mit Hilfe von Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie (TEM), und superconductive quantum interference device (SQUID) charakterisiert. Dabei wurde eine Größenabhängigkeit der magnetischen Eigenschaften sowie superparamagnetisches Verhalten beobachtet. Außerdem wurde die Wärmeerzeugung der magnetischen Nanopartikel in einem AC Magnetfeld untersucht. rnDie Kombination beider Komponenten in Form eines Ferrogels wurde durch Mischen Benzophenon funktionalisierter magnetischer Nanopartikel mit Polymer erreicht. Durch Aufschleudern (Spin-Coaten) wurden dünne Filme erzeugt und diese im Hinblick auf ihr Verhalten in einem Magnetfeld untersucht. Dabei wurde eine geringes Plastikverhalten beobachtet. Die experimentellen Ergebnisse wurden anschließend mit theoretisch berechneten Erwartungswerten verglichen und mit den unterschiedlichen Werten für dreidimensionale Ferrogele in Zusammenhang gestellt. rn

Task-oriented repetitive movements can improve motor recovery in patients with neurological or orthopaedic lesions. The application of robotics can serve to assist, enhance, evaluate, and document neurological and orthopaedic rehabilitation. ARMin is a new robot for arm therapy applicable to the training of activities of daily living in clinics. ARMin has a semiexoskeletal structure with six degrees of freedom, and is equipped with position and force sensors. The mechanical structure, the actuators and the sensors of the robot are optimized for patient-cooperative control strategies based on impedance and admittance architectures. This paper describes the mechanical structure, the control system, the sensors and actuators, safety aspects and results of a first pilot study with hemiplegic and spinal cord injured subjects.

Microinjection molding was employed to fabricate low-cost polymer cantilever arrays for sensor applications. Cantilevers with micrometer dimensions and aspect ratios as large as 10 were successfully manufactured from polymers, including polypropylene and polyvinylidenfluoride. The cantilevers perform similar to the established silicon cantilevers, with Q-factors in the range of 10–20. Static deflection of gold coated polymer cantilevers was characterized with heat cycling and self-assembled monolayer formation of mercaptohexanols. A hybrid mold concept allows easy modification of the surface topography, enabling customized mechanical properties of individual cantilevers. Combined with functionalization and surface patterning, the cantilever arrays are qualified for biomedical applications

Solidly mounted resonators (SMRs) with a top carbon nanotubes (CNTs) surface coating that doubles as an electrode and as a sensing layer have been fabricated. The influence of the CNTs on the frequency response of the resonators was studied by direct comparison to identical devices with a top metallic electrode. It was found that the CNTs introduced significantly less mass load on the resonators and these devices exhibited a greater quality factor, Q (>2000, compared to ∼1000 for devices with metal electrodes), which increases the gravimetric sensitivity of the devices by allowing the tracking of smaller frequency shifts. Protein solutions with different concentrations were loaded on the top of the resonators and their responses to mass-load from physically adsorbed coatings were investigated. Results show that resonators using CNTs as the top electrode exhibited a higher frequency change for a given load (∼0.25 MHz cm2 ng−1) compared to that of a metal thin film electrode (∼0.14 MHz cm2 ng−1), due to the lower mass of the CNTelectrodes and their higher active surface area compared to that of a thin film metal electrode. It is therefore concluded that the use of CNTelectrodes on resonators for their use as gravimetric biosensors is a significant improvement over metallic electrodes that are normally employed.

This article presents a cooperative manoeuvre among three dual mode cars – vehicles equipped with sensors and actuators, and that can be driven either manually or autonomously. One vehicle is driven autonomously and the other two are driven manually. The main objective is to test two decision algorithms for priority conflict resolution at intersections so that a vehicle autonomously driven can take their own decision about crossing an intersection mingling with manually driven cars without the need for infrastructure modifications. To do this, the system needs the position, speeds, and turning intentions of the rest of the cars involved in the manoeuvre. This information is acquired via communications, but other methods are also viable, such as artificial vision. The idea of the experiments was to adjust the speed of the manually driven vehicles to force a situation where all three vehicles arrive at an intersection at the same time.

The pH response of GaN/AlInN/AlN/GaN ion-sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET) on Si substrates has been characterized. We analyzed the variation of the surface potential (ΔVsp/ΔpH) and current (ΔIds/ΔpH) with solution pH in devices with the same indium content (17%, in-plane lattice-matched to GaN) and different AlInN thickness (6 nm and 10 nm), and compared with the literature. The shrinkage of the barrier, that has the effect to increase the transconductance of the device, makes the 2-dimensional electron density (2DEG) at the interface very sensitive to changes in the surface. Although the surface potential sensitivity to pH is similar in the two devices, the current change with pH (ΔIds/ΔpH), when biasing the ISFET by a Ag/AgCl reference electrode, is almost 50% higher in the device with 6 nm AlInN barrier, compared to the device with 10 nm barrier. When measuring the current response (ΔIds/ΔpH) without reference electrode, the device with thinner AlInN layer has a larger response than the thicker one, of a factor of 140%, and that current response without reference electrode is only 22% lower than its maximum response obtained using reference electrode.

How to create or integrate large Smart Spaces (considered as mash-ups of sensors and actuators) into the paradigm of ?Web of Things? has been the motivation of many recent works. A cutting-edge approach deals with developing and deploying web-enabled embedded devices with two major objectives: 1) to integrate sensor and actuator technologies into everyday objects, and 2) to allow a diversity of devices to plug to Internet. Currently, developers who want to use this Internet-oriented approach need have solid understanding about sensorial platforms and semantic technologies. In this paper we propose a Resource-Oriented and Ontology-Driven Development (ROOD) methodology, based on Model Driven Architecture (MDA), to facilitate to any developer the development and deployment of Smart Spaces. Early evaluations of the ROOD methodology have been successfully accomplished through a partial deployment of a Smart Hotel.
