Objectives The present study aimed to assess the effect of the specific dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) inhibitor sitagliptin on blood pressure and renal function in young prehypertensive (5-week-old) and adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs; 14-week-old). Methods Sitagliptin (40 mg/kg twice daily) was given by oral gavage to young (Y-SHR + IDPPIV) and adult (A-SHR R IDPPIV) SHRs for 8 days. Kidney function was assessed daily and compared with age-matched vehicle-treated SHR (Y-SHR and A-SHR) and with normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (Y-WKY and A-WKY). Arterial blood pressure was measured in these animals at the end of the experimental protocol. Additionally, Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) function and expression in microvilli membrane vesicles were assessed in young animals. Results Mean arterial blood pressure of Y-SHR + IDPPIV was significantly lower than that of Y-SHR (104 +/- 3 vs. 123 +/- 5 mmHg, P < 0.01) and was similar to Y-WKY (94 +/- 4 mmHg, P > 0.05). Compared to Y-SHR, Y-SHR + IDPPIV exhibited enhanced cumulative urinary flow and sodium excretion and decreased NHE3 activity and expression in proximal tubule microvilli. In the A-SHR, sitagliptin treatment had no significant effect on either renal function or arterial blood pressure. Conclusion Our data suggest that DPPIV inhibition attenuates blood pressure rising in young prehypertensive SHRs, partially by inhibiting NHE3 activity in renal proximal tubule. The literature reports research efforts allowing the editing of interactive TV multimedia documents by end-users. In this article we propose complementary contributions relative to end-user generated interactive video, video tagging, and collaboration. In earlier work we proposed the watch-and-comment (WaC) paradigm as the seamless capture of an individual`s comments so that corresponding annotated interactive videos be automatically generated. As a proof of concept, we implemented a prototype application, the WACTOOL, that supports the capture of digital ink and voice comments over individual frames and segments of the video, producing a declarative document that specifies both: different media stream structure and synchronization. In this article, we extend the WaC paradigm in two ways. First, user-video interactions are associated with edit commands and digital ink operations. Second, focusing on collaboration and distribution issues, we employ annotations as simple containers for context information by using them as tags in order to organize, store and distribute information in a P2P-based multimedia capture platform. We highlight the design principles of the watch-and-comment paradigm, and demonstrate related results including the current version of the WACTOOL and its architecture. We also illustrate how an interactive video produced by the WACTOOL can be rendered in an interactive video environment, the Ginga-NCL player, and include results from a preliminary evaluation.

The Sustainability revolution: A societal paradigm shift – ethos, innovation, governance transformation This paper identifies several key mechanisms that underlie major paradigm shifts. After identifying four such mechanisms, the article focuses on one type of transformation which has a prominent place in the sustainability revolution that the article argues is now taking place. The transformation is piecemeal, incremental, diffuse – in earlier writings referred to as ”organic”. This is a more encompassing notion than grassroots, since the innovation and transformation processes may be launched and developed at multiple levels through diverse mechanisms of discovery and development. Major features of the sustainability revolution are identified and comparisons made to the industrial revolution.

In this paper the architecture of an experimental multiparadigmatic programming environment is sketched, showing how its parts combine together with application modules in order to perform the integration of program modules written in different programming languages and paradigms. Adaptive automata are special self-modifying formal state machines used as a design and implementation tool in the representation of complex systems. Adaptive automata have been proven to have the same formal power as Turing Machines. Therefore, at least in theory, arbitrarily complex systems may be modeled with adaptive automata. The present work briefly introduces such formal tool and presents case studies showing how to use them in two very different situations: the first one, in the name management module of a multi-paradigmatic and multi-language programming environment, and the second one, in an application program implementing an adaptive automaton that accepts a context-sensitive language.

Investigar a percepção que os professores das séries iniciais do Ensino Fundamental dacidade do Rio de Janeiro têm sobre a importância de sua formação para o desenvolvimentodas futuras gerações foi o objetivo desta pesquisa acadêmica. Muito se tem falado nosúltimos tempos sobre a necessidade de mudança na formação de professores. Na segundametade do século XX, a sociedade brasileira assistiu a transformações constantes ocorridasem seus diferentes setores, alguns dos quais historicamente co-responsáveis, junto com aescola, pelo desenvolvimento educacional a família e a Igreja. A sociedade foi tambémtestemunha do avanço das novas tecnologias, principalmente as da comunicação e dainformação que fizeram da mídia outro setor de fundamental importância para a educaçãode crianças e jovens. São mudanças que obrigam a um novo paradigma de professor,detentor de competências diferenciadas para o eficaz desenvolvimento do fazer docente. Natentativa de atingir o objetivo proposto desenvolvemos três capítulos. O primeiro focouprincipalmente a base teórica, que teve como maior sustentação as idéias de PierreBourdieu sobre o capital cultural. No segundo capítulo foi empreendida uma revisão datrajetória da representação social do professor, por meio de um levantamento da história eda legislação voltada para a formação desse profissional, procurando chamar atenção paraas exigências atuais percebidas por Edgar Morin, Jacques Delors e Philippe Perrenoud. Noúltimo capítulo foi apresentada a pesquisa feita com professores da rede oficial da cidadedo Rio de Janeiro, não perdendo de foco as teorias estudadas.
