The creation of Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) is a major phase in the System Dynamics (SD) life-cycle, since the created CLDs express dependencies and feedback in the system under study, as well as, guide modellers in building meaningful simulation models. The cre-ation of CLDs is still subject to the modeller's domain expertise (mental model) and her ability to abstract the system, because of the strong de-pendency on semantic knowledge. Since the beginning of SD, available system data sources (written and numerical models) have always been sparsely available, very limited and imperfect and thus of little benefit to the whole modelling process. However, in recent years, we have seen an explosion in generated data, especially in all business related domains that are analysed via Business Dynamics (BD). In this paper, we intro-duce a systematic tool supported CLD creation approach, which analyses and utilises available disparate data sources within the business domain. We demonstrate the application of our methodology on a given business use-case and evaluate the resulting CLD. Finally, we propose directions for future research to further push the automation in the CLD creation and increase confidence in the generated CLDs.

Aquaculture generates a large load of effluents richin organic matter and nutrients that may be intro-duced into the environment. This study aimed toassess in a microcosm experiment, the effect ofshrimp pond water mixed with Patos Lagoon estuarywater on phytoplankton chlorophyll a and primaryproduction, simulating two salinities. Chlorophyll a,dissolved inorganic nutrients and primary produc-tion were measured in two experiments. In Harvest I,salinity of shrimp pond and environment water wassimilar, and chlorophyll a showed different trendsover time, according to the amount of nitrogen avail-able. In Harvest II, with different salinities and highnutrient concentrations in environment water, chlo-rophyll a levels showed a similar increasing trendover time in all mixtures. Net primary productionshowed differences among treatments in the firstsampling in Harvest I, but not in the second, whereasno differences were observed among treatments inHarvest II. We conclude that shrimp pond effluentcan lead to short-term variations in chlorophyll aand primary production levels, with similar salinities.Salinity differences result in lower chlorophyll a andprimary production values than expected accordingto the nutrient input. Differences in salinity can bean important management strategy to choose thebest harvest period.

This article is an introduction to the use of relational calculi in deriving programs. Using the relational caluclus Ruby, we derive a functional program that adds one bit to a binary number to give a new binary number. The resulting program is unsurprising, being the standard $quot;column of half-adders$quot;, but the derivation illustrates a number of points about working with relations rather than with functions.

This study explores the effects of modeling instruction on student learning in physics. Multiple representations grounded in physical contexts were employed by students to analyze the results of inquiry lab investigations. Class whiteboard discussions geared toward a class consensus following Socratic dialogue were implemented throughout the modeling cycle. Lab investigations designed to address student preconceptions related to Newton’s Third Law were implemented. Student achievement was measured based on normalized gains on the Force Concept Inventory. Normalized FCI gains achieved by students in this study were comparable to those achieved by students of other novice modelers. Physics students who had taken a modeling Intro to Physics course scored significantly higher on the FCI posttest than those who had not. The FCI results also provided insight into deeply rooted student preconceptions related to Newton’s Third Law. Implications for instruction and the design of lab investigations related to Newton’s Third Law are discussed.
