This study is in line with the analyses of university and working career in their interaction in relation with conditioning factors. It comprises two central issues: the issue of identity bound to the issue of professionalization within the domain of training and employment. Nowadays, professionalization of the individuals, inside a troubled occupational world, demands the implementation of mechanisms favoring the development of both the individuals and the institution in which they work. All this has an impact at the local, regional and even national levels. Three levels of analysis interplay from a sui generis perspective: macro-meso-micro-macro (Aparicio, 2005; 2007a; 2007b, 2013a, 2014, 2015 b, d – See the Three- Dimensional Spiral of Sense Theory). The aim was to be aware of the doctors’ representations regarding the value of such degree under the present “degree devaluation”, and its impact on the professional future as well as on the core issues of the labor market which need urgent measures with a view to a belter interaction between the two systems. The methodology used was quanti-qualitative (semi-structured questionnaires, interviews, and hierarchical evocations). The population consisted of doctors (2005-2012) from the National University of Cuyo, in Argentina. The results helped us understand the nucleus of such representations and the peripheral aspects by career and institution, thus revealing professional and disciplinary identities. The professional identities show the situated needs in terms of professionalization within the different contexts and, particularly, within the labor market.

There is considerable interest in alcohol in Irish society, yet minimal sociologcial understanding of its consumption, particularly of the sites where most drinking occurs: the country's 8750 pubs. Despite widespread public discussions on the role of the pub, there is scant social science evidence to better inform debate. Pubs are central to Irish community and are key sites of social interaction. American sociologist Ray Oldenburg has argued that "third places" (neither workplace nor home) are crucial to the maintenance of the community and the enhancement of social capital. According to Oldenburg, the role of the third place in the community is to provide continuity, regularity, a sense of place - all of which conceptually contribute to the construction of the self, the projection of the self within the public sphere, the distribution of social capital and the generation of a collective identity. The pub is the archetypal third place, but Oldenburg is concerned that modern pubs are less able to provide this vital function. Social scientists have suggested that community is in a state of fragmentation and decline due to changes in modes of social interaction and a decrease in shared spaces, resulting in a weakened connection to place. Community without propinquity has been characterised by social alienation, fragmentation and what Oldenburg refers to as the "problem of place" (13). Third places, and thus the Irish pub, have been particularly affected. In order to increase the sociological knowledge of the pub in Ireland, this project critically engages with the pub to assess the importance that public drinking houses have in the everyday. Moreover, this research sets out to investigate the people/place relationship using the pub as an investigative lens and examine the ways in which people shape place, place shapes people and how that relationship is implicated in the construction of irish identities. Furthermore, this is also an articulation of a cultural shift within Ireland and Irish places whose effects are deep and multi-layered. This project aims to explore the development of the contemporary geography of identity as the irish pub as a third place is transformed or disappears from the social landscape.

Career adapt-ability has recently gained momentum as a psychosocial construct that not only has much to offer the field of career development, but also contributes to positive coping, adjustment and self-regulation through the four dimensions of concern, control, curiosity and confidence. The positive psychology movement, with concepts such as the orientations to happiness, explores the factors that contribute to human flourishing and optimum functioning. This research has two main contributions; 1) to validate a German version of the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS), and 2) to extend the contribution of adapt-abilities to the field of work stress and explore its mediating capacity in the relation between orientations to happiness and work stress. We used a representative sample of the German-speaking Swiss working population including 1204 participants (49.8% women), aged between 26 and 56 (Mage = 42.04). Results indicated that the German version of the CAAS is valid, with overall high levels of model fit suggesting that the conceptual structure of career adapt-ability replicates well in this cultural context. Adapt-abilities showed a negative relationship to work stress, and a positive one with orientations to happiness. The engagement and pleasure scales of orientations to happiness also correlated negatively with work stress. Moreover, career adapt-ability mediates the relationship between orientations to happiness and work stress. In depth analysis of the mediating effect revealed that control is the only significant mediator. Thus control may be acting as a mechanism through which individuals attain their desired life at work subsequently contributing to reduced stress levels.

The integration of personal and organisational objectives is a notoriously difficult task but a systematic approach to training and development provides a powerful source of integration. A model illustrating how management development can occupy the 'middle ground' where organisational and individual development overlap is included in this report. Management development must be just one part of a continum, starting with workforce planning and recruitment and selection, and leading to training and development, succession planning and career development.

The Community Development and Health Network (CDHN) aim to end health inequalities using a community development approach - campaigning, influencing policy and developing best practice work which shows that communities, both geographical and of interest & identity, can define their own health needs and design and implement preventative and radical solutions. It believes that health is affected by more than access to health services, individual lifestyle choices and our own genetic make-up. These other factors can include poverty, the environment, education, living and working conditions, housing, access to food and social and community networks. Background: Although the proportion of women in medicine is growing, female physicians continue to be disadvantaged in professional activities. The purpose of the study was to determine and compare the professional activities of female and male primary care physicians in Andalusia and to assess the effect of the health center on the performance of these activities. Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, and multicenter study. Setting: Spain. Participants: Population: urban health centers and their physicians. Sample: 88 health centers and 500 physicians. Independent variable: gender. Measurements: Control variables: age, postgraduate family medicine specialty (FMS), patient quota, patients/day, hours/day housework from Monday to Friday, idem weekend, people at home with special care, and family situation. Dependent variables: 24 professional activities in management, teaching, research, and the scientific community. Self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive, bivariate, and multilevel logistic regression analyses. Results: Response: 73.6%. Female physicians: 50.8%. Age: female physicians, 49.1 ± 4.3 yrs; male physicians, 51.3 ± 4.9 yrs (p < 0.001). Female physicians with FMS: 44.2%, male physicians with FMS: 33.3% (p < 0.001). Female physicians dedicated more hours to housework and more frequently lived alone versus male physicians. There were no differences in healthcare variables. Thirteen of the studied activities were less frequently performed by female physicians, indicating their lesser visibility in the production and diffusion of scientific knowledge. Performance of the majority of professional activities was independent of the health center in which the physician worked. Conclusions: There are gender inequities in the development of professional activities in urban health centers in Andalusia, even after controlling for family responsibilities, work load, and the effect of the health center, which was important in only a few of the activities under study.

In vascular plants, the endodermis establishes a protective diffusion barrier surrounding the vasculature preventing the passive, uncontrolled entry of nutrients absorbed by the plant. It does so by means of a differentiation feature, the "Casparian Strip" (CS), a highly localized cell wall impregnation made of lignin, which seals the extracellular space. Although the existence of this differentiation feature has been intensively described, the mechanisms establishing this hallmark remain obscure. In this work I report, the developmental sequence of events that leads to a differentiated endodermis, in the plant model Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition, my descriptive approach gave important insights as to how these cells define membrane domains involved in the directional transport of nutrients. I also participated in characterizing a new transmembrane protein family, the CASPs, localized to the membrane domain underlying the CS, which we accordingly named the Casparian Strip membrane Domain (CSD). Our molecular analysis indicates that these proteins drive CS establishment. To identify more molecular factors of CS establishment, I performed a forward genetic screen. This screen led to the identification of 11 endodermis permissive mutants, which we named schengen (sgn) mutants. The causative mutations have been mapped to 5 independent loci: SGN1 to SGN5. SGN1 and SGN3 encode Receptor Like Kinases involved in the correct establishment of the CSD. A lack of those kinases leads to an incomplete CSD, which gives rise to interrupted CS barriers. Interestingly, SGN1 seems to also regulate CSD positioning to the middle of endodermal transversal walls. SGN4 encodes an NADPH oxidase involved in lignin polymerization essential for CS formation. The sgn5 mutant induces extra divisions of cortical cells strongly affecting the cell identity, but also leading to incorrect differentiation. A thorough characterization of the sgn2 mutant will follow elsewhere, yet preliminary results indicate that SGN2 encodes an Acyl-CoA N-acyltransferase. . In summary, with my work I have contributed a first set of molecular players of Casparian strip formation and initiated their characterization. Eventually, this might lead to an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of CS establishment in A.thaliana . This in turn will hopefully help to better understand nutrient uptake in higher plants and their response to environmental stresses. - Au sein des plantes vasculaires, l'endoderme représente un tissu protecteur mettant en place une barrière imperméable, empêchant n'importe quel élément de rejoindre les tissus conducteurs par simple diffusion. Cette barrière, appelée « Cadre de Caspary », correspond à une lignification de la paroi de l'endoderme et donne lieu à un cloisonnement de l'espace intercellulaire. Bien que cet élément de différenciation soit décrit en détail, sa mise en place reste incomprise. Cette étude indique la suite d'événements aboutissant à l'établissement du cadre de Caspary chez la plante modèle Arabidopsis thaliana. De plus, ce travail apporte de nouvelles connaissances expliquant comment ces cellules définissent des domaines membranaires importants pour le transport des nutriments. Nous décrivons une nouvelle famille de protéines membranaires, les CASPs (« CAparian Strip membrane domain Proteins »), localisées dans un domaine membranaire longeant le cadre de Caspary : le domaine de Caspary (CSD). L'analyse moléculaire des CASPs indique qu'elles dirigent la formation du cadre de Caspary. Par ailleurs, une approche génétique directe nous a permis d'identifier 11 mutants ayant un endoderme perméable. Nous avons nommé ces mutants Schengen, en référence à la zone de libre échange européenne. Les mutations impliquées dans ces mutants affectent 5 gènes désignés de SGN1 à SGN5. SGN1 et SGN3 produisent des protéines de type kinases (« Receptor-like Kinases », RLK) qui participent à la délimitation du CSD. L'absence de ces kinases aboutit à un domaine CSD incomplet, se traduisant par un cadre de Caspary discontinu. De plus, SGN1 semble réguler le positionnement du CSD au milieu de la paroi transversale de l'endoderme. SGN4 produit une enzyme de type NADPH oxydase impliquée dans la polymérisation du cadre de Caspary. Dans le mutant sgn5, on observe une division anormale des cellules du cortex créant ainsi une nouvelle couche cellulaire incapable d'achever sa différenciation en endoderme. Quant à la mutation sgn2, bien que nous pensons qu'elle affecte une Acyl-CoA N-acyltransferase, sa caractérisation ne sera réalisée que prochainement. Au final, ce travail procure de nouveaux éléments sur l'établissement du cadre de Caspary qui pourraient être importants afin de comprendre comment les plantes sélectionnent leurs nutriments et résistent à des conditions environnementales parfois hostiles. - De par leur immobilité, les plantes terrestres n'ont pas d'autre choix que de puiser leurs ressources dans leur environnement direct. La plante extrait du sol les nutriments qui lui sont nécessaires et les redistribue grâce à des tissus conducteurs. Afin de ne pas s'intoxiquer, il est donc essentiel de pouvoir sélectionner les éléments entrant dans la racine. Etonnement, ce n'est pas la surface des racines qui permet ce contrôle mais un tissu interne appelé endoderme. Ce dernier forme une barrière imperméable qui entoure chaque cellule et crée une jointure permettant de bloquer le passage des éléments entre les cellules. Cette structure, appelée « cadre de Caspary », oblige les éléments à entrer dans les cellules de l'endoderme et à être ainsi sélectionnés. Bien que cette structure soit décrite en détail, sa mise en place reste incomprise. Cette étude indique la suite d'événements qui aboutit à la formation du cadre de Caspary chez la plante modèle Arabidopsis thaliana. Ce travail apporte également de nouvelles connaissances expliquant comment ces cellules définissent, organisent et dirigent le transport des nutriments. Nous décrivons comment certains éléments de la cellule, les protéines CASPs (CAsparian Strip membrane domain Proteins), sont organisées un domaine particulier des membranes afin de créer une plateforme de construction longeant le cadre de Caspary : le domaine de Caspary (CSD). Afin de déterminer ce qu'il se passerait si une plante ne possédait pas de cadre de Caspary, nous avons réalisé une mutagénèse, ou approche génétique directe, et identifié 11 mutants (individu ayant un gène défectueux conduisant à la perte d'une fonction) ayant un endoderme perméable. Nous avons nommé ces mutants schengen, en référence à la zone de libre échange européenne. Les mutations impliquées dans ces mutants affectent 5 gènes désignés de SGN1 à SGN5. Les gènes SGN1 et SGN3 produisent des protéines de type kinases (« Receptor-like Kinases », RLK) servant à l'établissement de la plateforme de construction. Qui plus est, la kinase SGN1 semble réguler le positionnement de la plateforme au milieu de l'endoderme. Dans le mutant sgn5, on observe une nouvelle couche de cellules ressemblant à de l'endoderme mais incapable de former correctement une barrière identique au cadre de Caspary. Quant au dernier mutant, sgn2, bien que cette étude fournisse des indices permettant de comprendre pourquoi le mutant sgn2 est défectueux, nous n'expliquerons ce cas que prochainement. En résumé, ce travail procure de nouvelles connaissances sur l'établissement du cadre de Caspary qui pourraient être importantes afin de comprendre comment les plantes sélectionnent leurs nutriments et résistent à des conditions environnementales parfois hostiles.

Purpose - The authors sought to explain why and how protean career attitude might influence self-initiated expatriates' (SIEs) experiences positively. A mediation model of cultural adjustment was proposed and empirically evaluated. Design/methodology/approach - Data from 132 SIEs in Germany containing measures of protean career attitude, cultural adjustment, career satisfaction, life satisfaction, and intention to stay in the host country were analysed using path analysis with a bootstrap method. Findings - Empirical results provide support for the authors' proposed model: the positive relations between protean career attitude and the three expatriation outcomes (career satisfaction, life satisfaction and intention to stay in the host country) were mediated by positive cross-cultural adjustment of SIEs. Research limitations/implications - All data were cross-sectional from a single source. The sample size was small and included a large portion of Chinese participants. The study should be replicated with samples in other destination countries, and longitudinal research is suggested. Practical implications - By fostering both a protean career attitude in skilled SIE employees and their cultural adjustment, corporations and receiving countries could be able to retain this international workforce better in times of talent shortage. Originality/value - This study contributes to the scarce research on the conceptual relatedness of protean career attitude and SIEs, as well as to acknowledging the cultural diversity of the SIE population.

ABSTRACT A phenomenon closely linked to changes in social, economic, and cultural context is growing and growing as the years go by and attracting the attention of researchers for the development of studies involving both the individual and the organizational field. Named as "dual career family", this phenomenon emphasizes a joint move from a husband and wife (a couple) in the family sphere and in the development of both careers. Thus, in order to know how these relationships are being established, this study set out to investigate what are the determining factors that compose the dual career phenomenon in the Brazilian context. The research involved 340 participants, all former students of a public university, married or living in a marital status. The results allowed to feature, through descriptive statistics, the profile of dual career couples in the Brazilian scene and check what are the types of dual career in the country. We obtained five types of dual career: coordinated familistic, conventional familistic, coordinated careerist, conventional careerist and acrobat.

The aim of this study was to present the initial validation of a new questionnaire, the Transition to Retirement Questionnaire (TRQ) and to study its relationship with resistance to change and personality dimensions. Based on Schlossberg's typology of the retired, the TRQ is designed to assess five dimensions related to personal perceptions of transition to retirement, retirement, and personal plans and activities. The sample consisted of 1,054 professionally active or retired adults from the Swiss French-speaking Canton of Vaud. Exploratory principal components and confirmatory factor analyses highlighted a five-factor solution that fit coherently with Schlossberg's typology. Moreover, TRQ dimensions were related to resistance to change tendencies and personality dimensions. The TRQ seems to be an interesting tool for use in research but also for interventions with young retirees or people preparing for retirement.

The development of forensic intelligence relies on the expression of suitable models that better represent the contribution of forensic intelligence in relation to the criminal justice system, policing and security. Such models assist in comparing and evaluating methods and new technologies, provide transparency and foster the development of new applications. Interestingly, strong similarities between two separate projects focusing on specific forensic science areas were recently observed. These observations have led to the induction of a general model (Part I) that could guide the use of any forensic science case data in an intelligence perspective. The present article builds upon this general approach by focusing on decisional and organisational issues. The article investigates the comparison process and evaluation system that lay at the heart of the forensic intelligence framework, advocating scientific decision criteria and a structured but flexible and dynamic architecture. These building blocks are crucial and clearly lay within the expertise of forensic scientists. However, it is only part of the problem. Forensic intelligence includes other blocks with their respective interactions, decision points and tensions (e.g. regarding how to guide detection and how to integrate forensic information with other information). Formalising these blocks identifies many questions and potential answers. Addressing these questions is essential for the progress of the discipline. Such a process requires clarifying the role and place of the forensic scientist within the whole process and their relationship to other stakeholders.

This study analyzes the role of the working alliance on the life satisfaction and career decision difficulties of clients participating in career counseling in Switzerland. The study also compares these career counseling clients to a group of students who did not seek counseling, to explore the overall effectiveness of a face-to-face career counseling intervention, using a pre-post design. Results indicated that the working alliance was positively associated with clients' satisfaction with the intervention and with the final level of their life satisfaction. Working alliance was also negatively associated with the final levels of career decision difficulties. Moreover, clients' career decision difficulties significantly decreased and their life satisfaction increased throughout the intervention. These findings suggest that working alliance represents an important variable to better understand career interventions' underlying mechanisms. Moreover, face-to-face career counseling is effective considering career-specific as well as broader, life-related indicators.
