Resumo:
This paper develops a Markovian jump model to describe the fault occurrence in a manipulator robot of three joints. This model includes the changes of operation points and the probability that a fault occurs in an actuator. After a fault, the robot works as a manipulator with free joints. Based on the developed model, a comparative study among three Markovian controllers, H(2), H(infinity), and mixed H(2)/H(infinity) is presented, applied in an actual manipulator robot subject to one and two consecutive faults.

The transient statistics of a gain-switched coherently pumped class-C laser displays a linear correlation between the first passage time and subsequent peak intensity. Measurements are reported showing a positive or negative sign of this linear correlation, controlled through the switching time and the laser detuning. Further measurements of the small-signal laser gain combined with calculations involving a three-level laser model indicate that this sign fundamentally depends upon the way the laser inversion varies during the gain switching, despite the added dynamics of the laser polarization in the class-C laser. When linear equality constraints are invariant through time they can be incorporated into estimation by restricted least squares. If, however, the constraints are time-varying, this standard methodology cannot be applied. In this paper we show how to incorporate linear time-varying constraints into the estimation of econometric models. The method involves the augmentation of the observation equation of a state-space model prior to estimation by the Kalman filter. Numerical optimisation routines are used for the estimation. A simple example drawn from demand analysis is used to illustrate the method and its application.

In this paper an approach to extreme event control in wastewater treatment plant operation by use of automatic supervisory control is discussed. The framework presented is based on the fact that different operational conditions manifest themselves as clusters in a multivariate measurement space. These clusters are identified and linked to specific and corresponding events by use of principal component analysis and fuzzy c-means clustering. A reduced system model is assigned to each type of extreme event and used to calculate appropriate local controller set points. In earlier work we have shown that this approach is applicable to wastewater treatment control using look-up tables to determine current set points. In this work we focus on the automatic determination of appropriate set points by use of steady state and dynamic predictions. The performance of a relatively simple steady-state supervisory controller is compared with that of a model predictive supervisory controller. Also, a look-up table approach is included in the comparison, as it provides a simple and robust alternative to the steady-state and model predictive controllers, The methodology is illustrated in a simulation study.

In order to understand the growth and compaction behaviour of chalcopyrite (copper concentrate), batch granulation tests were carried out using a rotating drum. The granule growth exhibited induction-type behaviour, as defined by Iveson and Litster [AIChE J. 44 (1998) 15 10]. There were two consecutive stages during granulation: the induction stage, during which the granules are gradually being compacted and little or no growth occurs, and the rapid growth stage, which starts when the granules have become surface wet and are rapidly growing. In agreement with earlier findings. an increased amount of binder liquid shortened the induction time. The compaction behaviour was also investigated. A displaced volume method was adopted to determine the porosity of the granules. It was shown that this technique had a limitation as it was unable to detect the reduction of the volumes of the granule pores after the granules had become surface wet. Due to this, some of the measurements were not suited for fitting a three-parameter empirical model. Attempts were made to determine whether the rapid growth stage started with the pore saturation exceeding a certain critical value, but due to the scatter in the porosity measurements and the fact that some of the measurements could not be used, it was not possible to determine a critical pore saturation, However, the porosity measurements clearly demonstrated that the porosity of the granules decreased during the induction stage of an experiment and that when rapid growth occurred, the granules had a pore saturation was around 0.85. This value was slightly lower than unity, which is most likely due to trapped air bubbles. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

In standard cylindrical gradient coils consisting of a single layer of wires, a limiting factor in achieving very large magnetic field gradients is the rapid increase in coil resistance with efficiency. This is a particular problem in small-bore scanners, such as those used for MR microscopy. By adopting a multi-layer design in which the coil wires are allowed to spread out into multiple layers wound at increasing radii, a more favourable scaling of resistance with efficiency is achieved, thus allowing the design of more powerful gradient coils with acceptable resistance values. Previously this approach has been applied to the design of unshielded, longitudinal, and transverse gradient coils. Here, the multi-layer approach has been extended to allow the design of actively shielded multi-layer gradient coils, and also to produce coils exhibiting enhanced cooling characteristics. An iterative approach to modelling the steady-state temperature distribution within the coil has also been developed. Results indicate that a good level of screening can be achieved in multi-layer coils, that small versions of such coils can yield higher efficiencies at fixed resistance than conventional two-layer (primary and screen) coils, and that performance improves as the number of layers of increases. Simulations show that by optimising multi-layer coils for cooling it is possible to achieve significantly higher gradient strengths at a fixed maximum operating temperature. Considerando essa id??ia apenas parcialmente verdadeira, nossa argumenta????o vai na seguinte dire????o: como a burocracia ?? a forma espec??fica de organiza????o do aparato administrativo do Estado de Direito, este modelo n??o pode ser rejeitado, sob pena de comprometimento desse Estado. Mas ele precisa ser flexibilizado, superando e reduzindo o formalismo excessivo e a rigidez que sua realiza????o hist??rica possa ter gerado nos diferentes pa??ses. Igualmente, deve ser aperfei??oado em seus mecanismos de controle, at?? como condi????o para sua manuten????o eficaz nos governos democr??ticos contempor??neos.

RESUMO: ―Director de Turma – Perfil e Múltiplas Valências em Análise‖ é um trabalho de investigação que visa abordar a Direcção de Turma, no âmbito da supervisão intermédia da Escola. Nesta investigação, o principal objectivo é estudar quais as concepções que os Alunos e os Directores de Turma possuem, relativamente ao perfil e às funções de um Director de Turma, bem como analisar as competências que os Directores de Escola privilegiam num docente para exercer o cargo de Director de Turma. A metodologia a aplicar é do tipo descritivo. Os sujeitos são constituídos por 198 alunos do 9º ano de escolaridade do Ensino Básico, pertencentes a seis escolas do Distrito de Setúbal, perfazendo nove turmas, respectivos Directores de Turma e três Directores de Escolas Públicas. Para ter acesso às opiniões dos alunos, Directores de Turma e Directores de Escola recorremos à elaboração de questionários e a uma escala de atitudes, bem como a entrevistas semi – estruturadas. Neste enquadramento, pretende-se saber se, apesar de existir um suporte legislativo que concede ao Director de Turma responsabilidades específicas no domínio da coordenação, existe inconsistência entre esta atribuição de poderes e a respectiva operacionalização, bem como conhecer o perfil desejado de um Director de Turma. ABSTRACT: ―Homeroom teacher – its profile, organization and the extent of its work‖ is a research paper on the inestimable value of the role of the Portuguese homeroom teacher, as the supervising link between the students and the school´s principal. This study aims to unveil how homeroom teachers are regarded by the students, as well as analyze what skills school principals expect from them and also their own take on this subject. The methodology chosen was the descriptive kind. The subjects for this research were 198 students from the 9th grade (Junior – High) from six schools, all from the Setubal district, a total of nine classes, their corresponding homeroom teachers plus three state school principals. Students have answered questionnaires and their scores ranking them on a scale of attitudes. Semi-structured interviews also took place. Even though there is legislation that mentions in detail which are the administrative responsibilities, and profile of the homeroom teacher, the goal would be to understand if the powers that are granted match the challenges the homeroom teacher faces every day in the educational field.

In this paper a modified version of the classical Van der Pol oscillator is proposed, introducing fractional-order time derivatives into the state-space model. The resulting fractional-order Van der Pol oscillator is analyzed in the time and frequency domains, using phase portraits, spectral analysis and bifurcation diagrams. The fractional-order dynamics is illustrated through numerical simulations of the proposed schemes using approximations to fractional-order operators. Finally, the analysis is extended to the forced Van der Pol oscillator.

In this paper we introduce a formation control loop that maximizes the performance of the cooperative perception of a tracked target by a team of mobile robots, while maintaining the team in formation, with a dynamically adjustable geometry which is a function of the quality of the target perception by the team. In the formation control loop, the controller module is a distributed non-linear model predictive controller and the estimator module fuses local estimates of the target state, obtained by a particle filter at each robot. The two modules and their integration are described in detail, including a real-time database associated to a wireless communication protocol that facilitates the exchange of state data while reducing collisions among team members. Simulation and real robot results for indoor and outdoor teams of different robots are presented. The results highlight how our method successfully enables a team of homogeneous robots to minimize the total uncertainty of the tracked target cooperative estimate while complying with performance criteria such as keeping a pre-set distance between the teammates and the target, avoiding collisions with teammates and/or surrounding obstacles.

O controlo da qualidade em ressonância magnética (RM) passa pela realização de diversos testes ao equipamento e calibrações diárias, onde os fantomas desempenham um papel fundamental. Este trabalho teve como objetivo principal o desenvolvimento de um fantoma cerebral para um sistema de RM de intensidade 3.0 Tesla. Com base na literatura existente, escolheram-se como reagentes o cloreto de gadolínio (III) (GdCl3), a agarose, e o gelificante carragena, tendo sido ainda acrescentado o conservante químico azida de sódio (NaN3) de forma a inibir a degradação da solução. Realizaram-se vários testes com diferentes concentrações dos materiais selecionados até obter as misturas adequadas a suscetibilidade magnética das substâncias branca e cinzenta cerebrais. Os tempos de relaxação T1 das diversas substâncias desenvolvidas foram medidos, apresentando o fantoma final uns tempos de T1 de 702±10 ms, quando a concentração de GdCl3 foi de 100 µmol (substância branca) e 1179±23 ms quando a concentração foi de 15 µmol (substância cinzenta). Os valores de T1 do fantoma foram comparados estatisticamente com os tempos de relaxação conseguidos a partir de um cérebro humano, obtendo-se uma correlação de 0.867 com significância estatística. No intuito de demonstrar a aplicabilidade do fantoma, este foi sujeito a um protocolo de RM, do qual constaram as sequências habitualmente usadas no estudo cerebral. Como principais resultados constatou-se que, nas sequências ponderadas em T1, o fantoma apresenta uma forte associação positiva (rs > 0.700 p = 0.072) com o cérebro de referência, ainda que não sejam estatisticamente significativos. As sequências ponderadas em T2 demonstraram uma correlação positiva moderada e fraca, sendo a ponderação densidade protónica a única a apresentar uma associação negativa. Desta forma, o fantoma revelou-se um ótimo substituto do cérebro humano. Este trabalho culminou na criação de um modelo cerebral tridimensional onde foram individualizadas as regiões das substâncias branca e cinzenta, de forma a posteriormente serem preenchidas pelas correspondentes substâncias desenvolvidas, obtendo-se um fantoma cerebral antropomórfico.

In this work an adaptive modeling and spectral estimation scheme based on a dual Discrete Kalman Filtering (DKF) is proposed for speech enhancement. Both speech and noise signals are modeled by an autoregressive structure which provides an underlying time frame dependency and improves time-frequency resolution. The model parameters are arranged to obtain a combined state-space model and are also used to calculate instantaneous power spectral density estimates. The speech enhancement is performed by a dual discrete Kalman filter that simultaneously gives estimates for the models and the signals. This approach is particularly useful as a pre-processing module for parametric based speech recognition systems that rely on spectral time dependent models. The system performance has been evaluated by a set of human listeners and by spectral distances. In both cases the use of this pre-processing module has led to improved results.
