Sound art has a fragmented scholarship struggling to find appropriate terminology to understand and explain itself. In this context the practitioner’s perspective is often marginalised. This thesis seeks to develop new perspectives on contemporary sound practice, informed by a multi-disciplinary approach to auditory scholarship and interviews with Australian sound practitioners. The model that emerges describes an ecology of contemporary sound art where practitioners continually negotiate disciplinary and institutional boundaries while articulating distinctive models of listening and conceptions of sound. This thesis proposes a theoretical approach to sound art that recognises its interdisciplinarity as well as a distinctive engagement with the embodied experience of sound and listening.

Compaction control using lightweight deflectometers (LWD) is currently being evaluated in several states and countries and fully implemented for pavement construction quality assurance (QA) by a few. Broader implementation has been hampered by the lack of a widely recognized standard for interpreting the load and deflection data obtained during construction QA testing. More specifically, reliable and practical procedures are required for relating these measurements to the fundamental material property—modulus—used in pavement design. This study presents a unique set of data and analyses for three different LWDs on a large-scale controlled-condition experiment. Three 4.5x4.5 m2 test pits were designed and constructed at target moisture and density conditions simulating acceptable and unacceptable construction quality. LWD testing was performed on the constructed layers along with static plate loading testing, conventional nuclear gauge moisture-density testing, and non-nuclear gravimetric and volumetric water content measurements. Additional material was collected for routine and exploratory tests in the laboratory. These included grain size distributions, soil classification, moisture-density relations, resilient modulus testing at optimum and field conditions, and an advanced experiment of LWD testing on top of the Proctor compaction mold. This unique large-scale controlled-condition experiment provides an excellent high quality resource of data that can be used by future researchers to find a rigorous, theoretically sound, and straightforward technique for standardizing LWD determination of modulus and construction QA for unbound pavement materials.

Individual cues to deception are subtle and often missed by lay people and law enforcement alike. Linguistic statement analysis remains a potentially useful way of overcoming individual diagnostic limitations (e.g. Criteria based Content Analysis; Steller & Köhnken, 1989; Reality monitoring; Johnson & Raye, 1981; Scientific Content Analysis; Sapir, 1996). Unfortunately many of these procedures are time-consuming, require in-depth training, as well as lack empirical support and/or external validity. The current dissertation develops a novel approach to statement veracity analysis that is simple to learn, easy to administer, theoretically sound, and empirically validated. ^ Two strategies were proposed for detecting differences between liars' and truth-tellers' statements. Liars were hypothesized to strategically write statements with the goal of self-exoneration. Liars' statements were predicted to contain more first person pronouns and fewer third person pronouns. Truth-tellers were hypothesized to be motivated toward being informative and thus produce statements with fewer first person pronouns and more third person pronouns. Three studies were conducted to test this hypothesis. The first study explored the verbal patterns of exoneration and informativeness focused statements. The second study used a traditional theft paradigm to examine these verbal patterns in guilty liars and innocent truth tellers. In the third study to better match the context of a criminal investigation a cheating paradigm was used in which spontaneous lying was induced and written statements were taken. Support for the first person pronoun hypothesis was found. Limited support was found for the third person pronoun hypothesis. Results, implications, and future directions for the current research are discussed.^

Engine developers are putting more and more emphasis on the research of maximum thermal and mechanical efficiency in the recent years. Research advances have proven the effectiveness of downsized, turbocharged and direct injection concepts, applied to gasoline combustion systems, to reduce the overall fuel consumption while respecting exhaust emissions limits. These new technologies require more complex engine control units. The sound emitted from a mechanical system encloses many information related to its operating condition and it can be used for control and diagnostic purposes. The thesis shows how the functions carried out from different and specific sensors usually present on-board, can be executed, at the same time, using only one multifunction sensor based on low-cost microphone technology. A theoretical background about sound and signal processing is provided in chapter 1. In modern turbocharged downsized GDI engines, the achievement of maximum thermal efficiency is precluded by the occurrence of knock. Knock emits an unmistakable sound perceived by the human ear like a clink. In chapter 2, the possibility of using this characteristic sound for knock control propose, starting from first experimental assessment tests, to the implementation in a real, production-type engine control unit will be shown. Chapter 3 focus is on misfire detection. Putting emphasis on the low frequency domain of the engine sound spectrum, features related to each combustion cycle of each cylinder can be identified and isolated. An innovative approach to misfire detection, which presents the advantage of not being affected by the road and driveline conditions is introduced. A preliminary study of air path leak detection techniques based on acoustic emissions analysis has been developed, and the first experimental results are shown in chapter 4. Finally, in chapter 5, an innovative detection methodology, based on engine vibration analysis, that can provide useful information about combustion phase is reported.

The airflow velocities and pressures are calculated from a three-dimensional model of the human larynx by using the finite element method. The laryngeal airflow is assumed to be incompressible, isothermal, steady, and created by fixed pressure drops. The influence of different laryngeal profiles (convergent, parallel, and divergent), glottal area, and dimensions of false vocal folds in the airflow are investigated. The results indicate that vertical and horizontal phase differences in the laryngeal tissue movements are influenced by the nonlinear pressure distribution across the glottal channel, and the glottal entrance shape influences the air pressure distribution inside the glottis. Additionally, the false vocal folds increase the glottal duct pressure drop by creating a new constricted channel in the larynx, and alter the airflow vortexes formed after the true vocal folds. This paper presents an accurate and efficient solution for the random transverse and angular displacement fields of uncertain Timoshenko beams. Approximate, numerical solutions are obtained using the Galerkin method and chaos polynomials. The Chaos-Galerkin scheme is constructed by respecting the theoretical conditions for existence and uniqueness of the solution. Numerical results show fast convergence to the exact solution, at excellent accuracies. The developed Chaos-Galerkin scheme accurately approximates the complete cumulative distribution function of the displacement responses. The Chaos-Galerkin scheme developed herein is a theoretically sound and efficient method for the solution of stochastic problems in engineering. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Vibration-based energy harvesting has been investigated by several researchers over the last decade. The goal in this research field is to power small electronic components by converting the waste vibration energy available in their environment into electrical energy. Recent literature shows that piezoelectric transduction has received the most attention for vibration-to-electricity conversion. In practice, cantilevered beams and plates with piezoceramic layers are employed as piezoelectric energy harvesters. The existing piezoelectric energy harvester models are beam-type lumped parameter, approximate distributed parameter and analytical distributed parameter solutions. However, aspect ratios of piezoelectric energy harvesters in several cases are plate-like and predicting the power output to general (symmetric and asymmetric) excitations requires a plate-type formulation which has not been covered in the energy harvesting literature. In this paper. an electromechanically coupled finite element (FE) plate model is presented for predicting the electrical power output of piezoelectric energy harvester plates. Generalized Hamilton`s principle for electroelastic bodies is reviewed and the FE model is derived based on the Kirchhoff plate assumptions as typical piezoelectric energy harvesters are thin structures. Presence of conductive electrodes is taken into account in the FE model. The predictions of the FE model are verified against the analytical solution for a unimorph cantilever and then against the experimental and analytical results of a bimorph cantilever with a tip mass reported in the literature. Finally, an optimization problem is solved where the aluminum wing spar of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) is modified to obtain a generator spar by embedding piezoceramics for the maximum electrical power without exceeding a prescribed mass addition limit. In this study, we investigate the possibility of mode localization occurrence in a non-periodic Pfluger`s column model of a rocket with an intermediate concentrated mass at its middle point. We discuss the effects of varying the intermediate mass magnitude and its position and the resulting energy confinement for two cases. Free vibration analysis and the severity of mode localization are appraised, without decoupling the system, by considering as a solution basis the fundamental free response or dynamical solution. This allows for the reduction of the dimension of the algebraic modal equation that arises from satisfying the boundary and continuity conditions. By using the same methodology, we also consider the case of a cantilevered Pluger`s column with rotational stiffness at the middle support instead of an intermediate concentrated mass. Purlin-sheeting systems used for roofs and walls commonly take the form of cold-formed channel or zed section purlins, screw-connected to corrugated sheeting. These purlin-sheeting systems have been the subject of numerous theoretical and experimental investigations over the past three decades, but the complexity of the systems has led to great difficulty in developing a sound and general model. This paper presents a non-linear elasto-plastic finite element model, capable of predicting the behaviour of purlin-sheeting systems without the need for either experimental input or over simplifying assumptions. The model incorporates both the sheeting and the purlin, and is able to account for cross-sectional distortion of the purlin, the flexural and membrane restraining effects of the sheeting, and failure of the purlin by local buckling or yielding. The validity of the model is shown by its good correlation with experimental results. A simplified version of this model, which is more suitable for use in a design environment, is presented in a companion paper. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the fracture strength of three techniques used to re-attach tooth fragments in sound and endodontically treated fractured teeth with or without fiber post placement. Material and methods: Ninety human lower incisors were randomly divided into three groups of 30 teeth each. In group A teeth were not subjected to endodontic treatment; while teeth from groups B and C were endodontically treated and the pulp chamber restored with a composite resin. All teeth were fractured by an axial load applied to the buccal area in order to obtain tooth fragments. Teeth from each group were then divided into three subgroups, according to the re-attachment technique: bonded-only, buccal-chamfer and circumferential chamfer. Before the re-attachment procedures, fiber posts were placed in teeth from group C using dual cure resin luting cement (Duo-Link). All teeth (groups A-C) had the fragments re-attached using a same dual cure resin luting cement. in the bonded-only group, no additional preparation was made. After re-attachment of the fragment, teeth from groups buccal and circumferential chamfer groups had a 1.0 mm depth chamfer placed in the fracture line either on buccal surfaceor along the buccal and lingual surfaces, respectively. increments of microhybid composite resin (Tetric Ceram) were used in subgroups buccal chamfer and circumferential chamfer to restore the chamfer. The specimens were loaded until fracture in the same pre-determined area. The force required to detach each fragment was recorded and the data was subjected to a three-way analysis of variance where factors Group and Re-attachment technique are independent measures and Time of fracture is a repeated measure factor (first and second) and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results: The main factors Re-attachment technique (p = 0.04) and Time of fracture (p = 0.02) were statistically significant. The buccal and circumferential chamfer techniques were statistically similar (p > 0.05) and superior to the bonded-only group (p < 0.05). The first time of fracture was statistically superior to second time of fracture (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The use of fiber post is not necessary for the reinforcement of the tooth structure in re-attachment of endodontically treated teeth. When bonding a fractured fragment, the buccal or circumferential re-attachment techniques should be preferable in comparison with the simple re-attachment without any additional preparation. None of the techniques used for re-attachment restored the fracture strength of the intact teeth. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

General practitioners (GPs) deliver the majority of palliative care to patients in the last year of life. This article seeks to examine the nature of GP care, perceptions of the GPs themselves and others of that care, the adequacy of palliative care training, issues relating to accessibility of GPs to palliative care patients, and strategies that may be of use in encouraging more effective delivery of palliative care by GPs. Medline and PubMed databases from 1966 to 2000 were searched, and 135 references identified. Sixty-six of these described studies relevant to GP palliative care. GPs value this part of their work. Most of the time, patients appreciate the contribution the GP makes to palliative care particularly if the GP is accessible, takes time to listen, allows patient and carer to ventilate their feelings, and is seen to be making efforts made regarding symptom relief. However, reports from bereaved relatives suggest that palliative care is performed less well in the community than in other settings. GPs express discomfort about their competence to perform palliative care adequately. They tend to miss symptoms which are not treatable by them, or which are less common. However, with appropriate specialist support and facilities, GPs have been shown to deliver sound and effective care. GP comfort working with specialist teams increases with exposure to this form of patient management, as does the understanding of the potential other team members have in contributing to the care of the patient. Formal arrangements engaging GPs to work with specialist teams have been shown to improve functional outcomes, patient satisfaction, improve effective use of resources and improve effective physician behaviour in other areas of medicine. Efforts by specialist services to develop formal involvement of GPs in the care of individual patients, may be an effective method of improving GP palliative care skills and appreciation of the roles specialist services can play.

A sociedade contemporânea tem acompanhado a evolução da Internet, ligando cada vez mais pessoas que exigem mais dela a cada dia que passa e desencadeando uma proliferação tecnológica nunca antes observada. A utilização de recursos, como vídeo e áudio na Internet, tem ganho nos últimos anos um crescente interesse. No entanto, constata-se a carência ou falta de recursos educativos digitais na área do áudio, que sejam capazes de apresentar uma pedagogia eficiente face a um tema muito complexo e extenso, para todos aqueles que queiram aprender de forma mais aprofundada o áudio como componente de engenharia. Na internet, sites de vídeos como Youtube ensinam a usar software de edição de áudio como Audacity, conceitos sobre som e áudio. Contudo, todos estão espalhados, sendo que a maior parte deles não possui fundamentos científicos ou uma bibliografia que acompanhe os conteúdos que leccionam. A proposta desta investigação é pesquisar sobre conhecimentos e recursos de áudio, integrando-os num produto Learning Object, Investigar noções teóricas sobre o som, equipamentos e técnicas usadas na área, assim como obter melhores resultados num espaço para a gravação que o aluno poderia fazer, aglomerando esses conceitos num protótipo mediamente desenvolvido. Foi necessária uma investigação extensa nesta área e avaliar e investigar a possibilidade de um recurso educativo, como o DALCH, capaz de proporcionar uma aprendizagem efectiva dos conceitos relacionados com áudio, que é um conceito complexo. Uma vez realizada essa investigação, foi necessário desenvolver, testar e avaliar um produto Learning Object, que apresentasse o áudio na sua globalidade, desde conceitos básicos até conceitos inerentes à própria produção. Foi possível aferir que esta solução pode contribuir para a formação desses alunos mediante uma experiência de aprendizagem agradável e intuitiva.

O presente Projeto Artístico propõe como principal objetivo a divulgação de obras para clarinete solo e para clarinete e eletrónica produzidas no seio das classes de clarinete e composição da Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. A preparação e montagem da obra de Edward Luiz Ayres d’Abreu, aqui realizada em estreia absoluta, pretende manter viva a continuidade de produção artística desta instituição a todos os níveis, neste caso, entre dois estudantes. Neste relatório estão registados os benefícios alcançados com o trabalho de pesquisa relacionado com os aspectos biográficos dos compositores, o contexto da criação das obras, assim como a análise e apuramento de questões interpretativas pouco utilizadas na música convencional como por exemplo, as técnicas clarinetísticas contemporâneas (glissando, frulato, vibrato, som e voz, multifónicos, micro-tons), a prática de música com eletrónica, ou a experiência inovadora da recriação musical em palco de uma partitura gráfica.
