OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of increment thickness on Vickers microhardness (HV) and shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin of a conventional and four bulk fill resin composites. METHODS HV and SBS were determined on specimens of the conventional resin composite Filtek Supreme XTE (XTE) and the bulk fill resin composites SDR (SDR), Filtek Bulk Fill (FBF), x-tra fil (XFIL), and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TEBF) after 24h storage. HV was measured either as profiles at depths up to 6mm or at the bottom of 2mm/4mm/6mm thick resin composite specimens. SBS of 2mm/4mm/6mm thick resin composite increments was measured to dentin surfaces of extracted human molars treated with the adhesive system OptiBond FL, and the failure mode was stereomicroscopically determined at 40× magnification. HV profiles and failure modes were descriptively analysed whereas HV at the bottom of resin composite specimens and SBS were statistically analysed with nonparametric ANOVA followed by Wilcoxon rank sum tests (α=0.05). RESULTS HV profiles (medians at 2mm/4mm/6mm): XTE 105.6/88.8/38.3, SDR 34.0/35.5/36.9, FBF 36.4/38.7/37.1, XFIL 103.4/103.9/101.9, TEBF 63.5/59.7/51.9. HV at the bottom of resin composite specimens (medians at 2mm/4mm/6mm): XTE (p<0.0001) 105.5>85.5>31.1, SDR (p=0.10) 25.8=21.9=26.0, FBF (p=0.16) 26.6=25.3=28.9, XFIL (p=0.18) 110.5=107.2=101.9, TEBF (p<0.0001) 63.0>54.9>48.2. SBS (MPa, medians at 2mm/4mm/6mm): XTE (p<0.0001) 23.9>18.9=16.7, SDR (p=0.26) 24.6=22.7=23.4, FBF (p=0.11) 21.4=20.3=22.0, x-tra fil (p=0.55) 27.0=24.0=23.6, TEBF (p=0.11) 21.0=20.7=19.0. The predominant SBS failure mode was cohesive failure in dentin. SIGNIFICANCE At increasing increment thickness, HV and SBS decreased for the conventional resin composite but generally remained constant for the bulk fill resin composites.

Using the asymptotic form of the bulk Weyl tensor, we present an explicit approach that allows us to reconstruct exact four-dimensional Einstein spacetimes which are algebraically special with respect to Petrov’s classification. If the boundary metric supports a traceless, symmetric and conserved complex rank-two tensor, which is related to the boundary Cotton and energy-momentum tensors, and if the hydrodynamic congruence is shearless, then the bulk metric is exactly resummed and captures modes that stand beyond the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. We illustrate the method when the congruence has zero vorticity, leading to the Robinson-Trautman spacetimes of arbitrary Petrov class, and quote the case of non-vanishing vorticity, which captures the Plebański-Demiański Petrov D family.

BACKGROUND Recent technical development allows the digital manufacturing of monolithic reconstructions with high-performance materials. For implant-supported crowns, the fixation requires an abutment design onto which the reconstruction can be bonded. PURPOSE The aim of this laboratory investigation was to analyze stiffness, strength, and failure modes of implant-supported, computer-assisted design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-generated resin nano ceramic (RNC) crowns bonded to three different titanium abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen monolithic RNC crowns were produced and loaded in a universal testing machine under quasi-static condition according to DIN ISO 14801. With regard to the type of titanium abutment, three groups were defined: (1) prefabricated cementable standard; (2) CAD/CAM-constructed individualized; and (3) novel prefabricated bonding base. Stiffness and strength were measured and analyzed statistically with Wilcoxon rank sum test. Sections of the specimens were examined microscopically. RESULTS Stiffness demonstrated high stability for all specimens loaded in the physiological loading range with means and standard deviations of 1,579 ± 120 N/mm (group A), 1,733 ± 89 N/mm (group B), and 1,704 ± 162 N/mm (group C). Mean strength of the novel prefabricated bonding base (group C) was 17% lower than of the two other groups. Plastic deformations were detectable for all implant-abutment crown connections. CONCLUSIONS Monolithic implant crowns made of RNC seem to represent a feasible and stable prosthetic construction under laboratory testing conditions with strength higher than the average occlusal force, independent of the different abutment designs used in this investigation.

A CDP-diacylglycerol dependent phosphatidylserine synthase was detected in three species of gram-positive bacilli, viz. Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megaterium; the enzyme in B. licheniformis was studied in detail. The subcellular distribution experiments in cell-free extracts of B. licheniformis using differential centrifugation, sucrose gradient centrifugation and detergent solubilization showed the phosphatidylserine synthase to be tightly associated with the membrane. The enzyme was shown to have an absolute requirement for divalent metal ion for activity with a strong preference for manganese. The enzyme activity was completely dependent upon the addition of CDP-diacylglycerol to the assay system; the role of the liponucleotide was rigorously shown to be that of phosphatidyl donor and not just a detergent-like stimulator. This enzyme was then solubilized from B. licheniformis membranes and purified to near homogeneity. The purification procedure consisted of CDP-diacylglycerol-Sepharose affinity chromatography followed by substrate elution from blue-dextran Sepharose. The purified preparation showed a single band with an apparent minimum molecular weight of 53,000 when subjected to SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The preparation was free of any phosphatidylglycerophosphate synthase, CDP-diacylglycerol hydrolase and phosphatidylserine hydrolase activities. The utilization of substrates and formation of products occurred with the expected stoichiometry. Radioisotopic exchange patterns between related substrate and product pairs suggest a sequential BiBi reaction as opposed to the ping-pong mechanism exhibited by the well studied phosphatidylserine synthase of Escherichia coli. Proteolytic digestion of the enzyme yielded a smaller active form of the enzyme (41,000 daltons) which appears to be less prone to aggregation.^ This has been the first detailed study in a well-defined bacillus species of the enzyme catalyzing the CDP-diacylglycerol-dependent formation of phosphatidylserine; this reaction is the first committed step in the biosynthetic pathway to the major membrane component, phosphatidylethanolamine. Further study of this enzyme may lead to understanding of new mechanisms of phosphatidyl transfer and novel modes of control of phospholipid biosynthetic enzymes. ^

A novel laser microparticle detector used in conjunction with continuous sample melting has provided a more than 1500 m long record of particle concentration and size distribution of the NGRIP ice core, covering continuously the period approximately from 9.5-100 kyr before present; measurements were at 1.65 m depth resolution, corresponding to approximately 35-200 yr. Particle concentration increased by a factor of 100 in the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compared to the Preboreal, and sharp variations of concentration occurred synchronously with rapid changes in the delta18O temperature proxy. The lognormal mode µ of the volume distribution shows clear systematic variations with smaller modes during warmer climates and coarser modes during colder periods. We find µ ~ 1.7 µm diameter during LGM and µ ~ 1.3 µm during the Preboreal. On timescales below several 100 years µ and the particle concentration exhibit a certain degree of independence present especially during warm periods, when µ generally is more variable. Using highly simplifying considerations for atmospheric transport and deposition of particles we infer that (1) the observed changes of µ in the ice largely reflect changes in the size of airborne particles above the ice sheet and (2) changes of µ are indicative of changes in long range atmospheric transport time. From the observed size changes we estimate shorter transit times by roughly 25% during LGM compared to the Preboreal. The associated particle concentration increase from more efficient long range transport is estimated to less than one order of magnitude.

Quaternary marine tephras in the Izu-Bonin Arc offer significant information about explosive volcanic activities of the arc. Visual core descriptions, petrographic examinations, and chemical and grain-size analyses were conducted on tephras of backarc, arc, and forearc origin. Tephras are black and white and occur in simple and multiple modes with mixed and nonmixed ashes of black and white glass shards. The grain size distributions of the tephras are classified into three categories: coarse, white pumiceous, and fine white and black well-sorted types. The frequency of occurrence of the white and black tephras differs within the tectonic settings of the arc. Chemically, the Quaternary tephras in this region belong to low-alkali tholeiitic series with lower K2O and TiO2 than normal ordinary arc volcanic materials. Several tephras from different sites along the forearc correlate with each other and with tephras in the Shikoku Basin site and with Aogashima volcanics. These volcanic ashes resemble those in other backarc rifting areas, such as in the Fiji, Okinawa (Ryukyu), and Mariana regions.

Despite the key importance of altered oceanic mantle as a repository and carrier of light elements (B, Li, and Be) to depth, its inventory of these elements has hardly been explored and quantified. In order to constrain the systematics and budget of these elements we have studied samples of highly serpentinized (>50%) spinel harzburgite drilled at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Fifteen-Twenty Fracture zone, ODP Leg 209, Sites 1272A and 1274A). In-situ analysis by secondary ion mass spectrometry reveals that the B, Li and Be contents of mantle minerals (olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene) remain unchanged during serpentinization. B and Li abundances largely correspond to those of unaltered mantle minerals whereas Be is close to the detection limit. The Li contents of clinopyroxene are slightly higher (0.44-2.8 µg/g) compared to unaltered mantle clinopyroxene, and olivine and clinopyroxene show an inverse Li partitioning compared to literature data. These findings along with textural observations and major element composition obtained from microprobe analysis suggest reaction of the peridotites with a mafic silicate melt before serpentinization. Serpentine minerals are enriched in B (most values between 10 and 100 µg/g), depleted in Li (most values below 1 µg/g) compared to the primary phases, with considerable variation within and between samples. Be is at the detection limit. Analysis of whole rock samples by prompt gamma activation shows that serpentinization tends to increase B (10.4-65.0 µg/g), H2O and Cl contents and to lower Li contents (0.07-3.37 µg/g) of peridotites, implying that-contrary to alteration of oceanic crust-B is fractionated from Li and that the B and Li inventory should depend essentially on rock-water ratios. Based on our results and on literature data, we calculate the inventory of B and Li contained in the oceanic lithosphere, and its partitioning between crust and mantle as a function of plate characteristics. We model four cases, an ODP Leg 209-type lithosphere with almost no igneous crust, and a Semail-type lithosphere with a thick igneous crust, both at 1 and 75 Ma, respectively. The results show that the Li contents of the oceanic lithosphere are highly variable (17-307 kg in a column of 1 m * 1 m * thickness of the lithosphere (kg/col)). They are controlled by the primary mantle phases and by altered crust, whereas the B contents (25-904 kg/col) depend entirely on serpentinization. In all cases, large quantities of B reside in the uppermost part of the plate and could hence be easily liberated during slab dehydration. The most prominent input of Li into subduction zones is to be expected from Semail-type lithosphere because most of the Li is stored at shallow levels in the plate. Subducting an ODP Leg 209-type lithosphere would mean only very little Li contribution from the slab. Serpentinized mantle thus plays an important role in B recycling in subduction zones, but it is of lesser importance for Li.

This study analyzes coccolithophore abundance fluctuations (e.g., Emiliania huxleyi, Gephyrocapsa specimens, and Florisphaera profunda) in core MD01-2444 sediment strata retrieved at the Iberian Margin, northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Coccolithophores are calcareous nannofossils, a major component of the oceanic phytoplankton, which provide information about past ecological and climatological variability. Results are supported by data on fossil organic compounds (sea surface temperatures, alkenones, and n-hexacosan-1-ol index) and geochemical analyses (benthic d13Ccc and planktonic d18Occ isotopes). Three scenarios are taken into account for this location at centennial-scale resolution over the last 70,000 years: the Holocene and the stadial and interstadial modes. The different alternatives are described by means of elements such as nutrients; upwelling phenomena; temperatures at surface and subsurface level; or the arrival of surface turbid, fresh, and cold waters due to icebergs, low sea level, increased aridity, and dust. During the Holocene, moderate primary productivity was observed (mainly concentrated in E. huxleyi specimens); surface temperatures were at maxima while the water column was highly ventilated by northern-sourced polar deep waters and warmer subsurface, nutrient-poor subtropical waters. Over most of the last glacial stadials, surface productivity weakened (higher F. profunda and reworked specimen percentages and lower diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones); the arrival of cold Arctic surface waters traced by tetraunsaturated C37 peaks and large E. huxleyi, together with powerful ventilated southern-sourced polar deep waters, disturbed, in all likelihood, the delicate vertical equilibrium while preventing significant upwelling mixing. Finally, during the last glacial interstadials (lower F. profunda percentages, nonreworked material, and higher diunsaturated and triunsaturated C37 alkenones) a combined signal is observed: warm surface temperatures were concurrent with generally low oxygenation of the deep-sea floor, moderate arrival of northern-sourced deep waters, and subsurface cold, nutrient-rich, recently upwelled waters, probably of polar origin; these particular conditions may have promoted vertical mixing while enhancing surface primary productivity (mainly of Gephyrocapsa specimens).

Seven hundred and nineteen samples from throughout the Cainozoic section in CRP-3 were analysed by a Malvern Mastersizes laser particle analyser, in order to derive a stratigraphic distribution of grain-size parameters downhole. Entropy analysis of these data (using the method of Woolfe & Michibayashi, 1995) allowed recognition of four groups of samples, each group characterised by a distinctive grain-size distribution. Group 1, which shows a multi-modal distribution, corresponds to mudrocks, interbedded mudrock/sandstone facies, muddy sandstones and diamictites. Group 2, with a sand-grade mode but showing wide dispersion of particle size, corresponds to muddy sandstones, a few cleaner sandstones and some conglomerates. Group 3 and Group 4 are also sand-dominated, with better grain-size sorting, and correspond to clean, well-washed sandstones of varying mean grain-size (medium and fine modes, respectively). The downhole disappearance of Group 1, and dominance of Groups 3 and 4 reflect a concomitant change from mudrock- and diamictite-rich lithology to a section dominated by clean, well-washed sandstones with minor conglomerates. Progressive downhole increases in percentage sand and principal mode also reflect these changes. Significant shifts in grain-size parameters and entropy group membership were noted across sequence boundaries and seismic reflectors, as recognised in other studies.

A contribution is presented, intended to provide theoretical foundations for the ongoing efforts to employ global instability theory for the analysis of the classic boundary-layer flow, and address the associated issue of appropriate inflow/outflow boundary conditions to close the PDE-based global eigenvalue problem in open flows. Starting from a theoretically clean and numerically simple application, in which results are also known analytically and thus serve as a guidance for the assessment of the performance of the numerical methods employed herein, a sequence of issues is systematically built into the target application, until we arrive at one representative of open systems whose instability is presently addressed by global linear theory applied to open flows, the latter application being neither tractable theoretically nor straightforward to solve by numerical means. Experience gained along the way is documented. It regards quantification of the depar- ture of the numerical solution from the analytical one in the simple problem, the generation of numerical boundary layers at artificially truncated boundaries, no matter how far the latter are placed from the region of highest flow gradients and, ultimately the impracti- cally large number of (direct and adjoint) modes necessary to project an arbitrary initial perturbation and follow its temporal evolution by a global analysis approach, a finding which may question the purported robustness reported in the literature of the recovery of optimal perturbations as part of global analyses yielding under-resolved eigenspectra.

Global linear instability theory is concerned with the temporal or spatial development of small-amplitude perturbations superposed upon laminar steady or time-periodic three-dimensional flows, which are inhomogeneous in two(and periodic in one)or all three spatial directions. After a brief exposition of the theory, some recent advances are reported. First, results are presented on the implementation of a Jacobian-free Newton–Krylov time-stepping method into a standard finite-volume aerodynamic code to obtain global linear instability results in flows of industrial interest. Second, connections are sought between established and more-modern approaches for structure identification in flows, such as proper orthogonal decomposition and Koopman modes analysis (dynamic mode decomposition), and the possibility to connect solutions of the eigenvalue problem obtained by matrix formation or time-stepping with those delivered by dynamic mode decomposition, residual algorithm, and proper orthogonal decomposition analysis is highlighted in the laminar regime; turbulent and three-dimensional flows are identified as open areas for future research. Finally, a new stable very-high-order finite-difference method is implemented for the spatial discretization of the operators describing the spatial biglobal eigenvalue problem, parabolized stability equation three-dimensional analysis, and the triglobal eigenvalue problem; it is shown that, combined with sparse matrix treatment, all these problems may now be solved on standard desktop computers

We present a combined magnetooptic and ferromagnetic resonance study of a series of arrays of single-crystalline Fe stripes fabricated by electron beam lithography on epitaxial Au(001)/Fe(001)/MgO(001) films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The analysis of the films revealed a clear fourfold magnetocrystalline anisotropy, with no significant presence of other anisotropy sources. The use of a large series of arrays, with stripe widths between 140 and 1000 nm and separation between them of either 200 nm or 500 nm, allowed studying their magnetization processes and resonance modes as well as the effects of the dipolar interactions on both. The magnetization processes of the stripes were interpreted in terms of a macrospin approximation, with a good agreement between experiments and calculations and negligible influence of the dipolar interactions. The ferromagnetic resonance spectra evidenced two types of resonances linked to bulk oscillation modes, essentially insensitive to the dipolar interactions, and a third one associated with edge-localized oscillations, whose resonance field is strongly dependent on the dipolar interactions. The ability to produce a high quality, controlled series of stripes provided a good opportunity to achieve an agreement between the experiments and calculations, carried out by taking into account just the Fe intrinsic properties and the morphology of the arrays, thus evidencing the relatively small role of other extrinsic factors.
