Vertical arrays of carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) show unique mechanical behavior in compression, with a highly nonlinear response similar to that of open cell foams and the ability to recover large deformations. Here, we study the viscoelastic response of both freestanding VACNT arrays and sandwich structures composed of a VACNT array partially embedded between two layers of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and bucky paper. The VACNTs tested are similar to 2 mm thick foams grown via an injection chemical vapor deposition method. Both freestanding and sandwich structures exhibit a time-dependent behavior under compression. A power-law function of time is used to describe the main features observed in creep and stress-relaxation tests. The power-law exponents show nonlinear viscoelastic behavior in which the rate of creep is dependent upon the stress level and the rate of stress relaxation is dependent upon the strain level. The results show a marginal effect of the thin PDMS/bucky paper layers on the viscoelastic responses. At high strain levels (epsilon - 0.8), the peak stress for the anchored CNTs reaches similar to 45 MPa, whereas it is only similar to 15MPa for freestanding CNTs, suggesting a large effect of PDMS on the structural response of the sandwich structures. The tensile behavior of a high activity stand-alone Pt-aluminide (PtAl) bond coat was evaluated by the micro-tensile test method at various temperatures (room temperature to 1100 degrees C) and strain rates (10(-5) s(-1)-10(-1) s(-1).) At all strain rates, the stress strain behavior of the stand-alone coating was significantly affected by the variation in temperature. The stress strain response was linear, indicating brittle behavior, at temperatures below the brittle ductile transition temperature (BDTT). The coating exhibited appreciable ductility (up to 2%) above the BDTT. The strength (both yield stress and ultimate tensile strength) of the coating decreased and its ductility increased with increasing temperature above the BDTT. The tensile behavior of the coating was sensitive to strain rate in the ductile regime, with its strength increasing with increasing strain rate at any given temperature. The BDTT of the coating was found to increase with increasing with increasing strain rate. The coating exhibited two distinct mechanisms of deformation above the BDTT. The transition temperature for the change of deformation mechanism also increased with increasing strain rate. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study reports the constitutive response and energy absorption capabilities of fluid-impregnated carbon nanotube (CNT) foams under compressive loading as a function of fluid viscosity and loading rates. At all strain rates tested, we observe two characteristic regimes: below a critical value, increasing fluid viscosity increases the load bearing and energy absorption capacities; after a critical value of the fluid's viscosity, we observe a rapid decrease in the systems' mechanical performance. For a given fluid viscosity, the load bearing capacity of the structure slightly decreases with strain rate. A phenomenological model, accounting for fluid-CNT interaction, is developed to explain the observed mechanical behavior. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Ni-Fe-Ga-based alloys form a new class of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) that show considerable formability because of the presence of a disordered fcc gamma-phase. The current study explores the deformation processing of this alloy using an off-stoichiometric Ni55Fe59Ga26 alloy that contains the ductile gamma-phase. The hot deformation behavior of this alloy has been characterized on the basis of its flow stress variation obtained by isothermal constant true strain rate compression tests in the 1123-1323 K temperature range and strain rate range of 10(-3)-10 s(-1) and using a combination of constitutive modeling and processing map. The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) regime for thermomechanical processing has been identified for this Heusler alloy on the basis of the processing maps and the deformed microstructures. This alloy also shows evidence of dynamic strain-aging (DSA) effect which has not been reported so far for any Heusler FSMAs. Similar effect is also noticed in a Ni-Mn-Ga-based Heusler alloy which is devoid of any gamma-phase. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The compressive behavior of graphene foam (GF) and its polymer (polydimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) infiltrated structure are presented. While GF showed an irreversible compressibility, the GF/PDMS structure revealed a highly reversible mechanical behavior up to many cycles of compression and also possesses a six times higher compressive strength. In addition, the strain rate demonstrated a negligible effect on both the maximum achieved stress and energy absorption in the GF/PDMS structure. The mechanical responses of both GF and GF/PDMS structure are compared with carbon nanotubes based cellular structure and its composite with PDMS, where GF/PDMS presented a dominant mechanical characteristic among other carbon based micro foam structures. Therefore, the improved mechanical properties of GF/PDMS suggest its potential for dampers, cushions, packaging, etc.

Solder joints in electronic packages undergo thermo-mechanical cycling, resulting in nucleation of micro-cracks, especially at the solder/bond-pad interface, which may lead to fracture of the joints. The fracture toughness of a solder joint depends on material properties, process conditions and service history, as well as strain rate and mode-mixity. This paper reports on a methodology for determining the mixed-mode fracture toughness of solder joints with an interfacial starter-crack, using a modified compact mixed mode (CMM) specimen containing an adhesive joint. Expressions for stress intensity factor (K) and strain energy release rate (G) are developed, using a combination of experiments and finite element (FE) analysis. In this methodology, crack length dependent geometry factors to convert for the modified CMM sample are first obtained via the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD)-based linear extrapolation method to calculate the under far-field mode I and II conditions (f(1a) and f(2a)), (ii) generation of a master-plot to determine a(c), and (iii) computation of K and G to analyze the fracture behavior of joints. The developed methodology was verified using J-integral calculations, and was also used to calculate experimental fracture toughness values of a few lead-free solder-Cu joints. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Classical models are not successful in describing discharge characteristics of a lead-acid battery when the current density is varied over a wide range. A model is developed in this work to overcome this lacuna by introducing into the standard models two mechanisms that have not been used earlier. Lead sulfate particles nucleate and grow on active materials of electrodes during discharge, resulting in coverage of active area. Increasing rate of discharge builds supersaturation of lead sulfate rapidly, and causes increased extents of nucleation and coverage. Electrodes behave almost like an insulator due to deposition of lead sulfate when active materials are converted to a critical extent, and this can stop discharge process. Influence of this mechanism is also rate dependent. The new model developed is tested against data on polarization behavior, and capacity drawn as a function of current. The model successfully predicts both polarization curves and Peukert behavior. The model is used to predict charge that can be drawn at a current after partial discharge at a different current. Model suggests that altering nucleation behavior can be useful in enhancing capacity available for discharge. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society.

Time-dependent nanoscale plasticity of nanocrystalline nickel at room temperature was critically explored through a series of micropillar creep and quasi-static compression experiments on rod and tube specimens fabricated by electron beam lithography and electroplating. Enhanced creep rates in tubes as compared to rods, establishes the facilitating role played by the free surface in time-dependent deformation. Creep stress exponent, n, and strain-rate sensitivity, m, were compared to examine connections between creep and the rate-dependent plasticity, if any. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The hot deformation behavior of Nb-1 wt.%Zr alloy was studied using uniaxial compression tests carried out in vacuum to a true strain of 0.6 in the temperature range of 900 to 1700 degrees C and the strain rate range of 3 x 10(-3) to 10 s(-1). The optimum regime of hot workability of Nb-1Zr alloy was determined from the strain rate sensitivity (m) contour plots. A high m of about 02 was obtained in the temperature and strain rate range of 1200-1500 degrees C and 10(-3) to 10(-1) s(-1) and 1600-1700 degrees C and 10(-1) to 1 s(-1). Microstructure of the deformed samples showed features of dynamic recrystallization within the high strain rate sensitivity domain. Compared to the study on Nb-1Zr-0.1C alloy, Nb-1Zr showed a lower flow stress and an optimum hot working domain at lower temperatures. In the 1500 to 1700 degrees C range the apparent activation energy of deformation for Nb-1Zr was 259 kJ mol(-1), the stress exponent 5, and the activation volume about 200 to 700 b(3). Plastic deformation behaviors of Zr65Al10Ni10CU15 and Zr52.5Al10Ni10Cu15Be12.5 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are studied by using the depth-sensing nanoindentation, microindentation and uniaxial compression. The Be-containing BMG exhibits a significantly improved overall plastic strain compared with the Be-free alloy during compressive tests. Both BMGs show a loading-rate-dependent serrated flow during nanoindentation measurements, but the Be-containing alloy exhibits a much lower critical loading rate for the disappearance of the serration than the Be-free BMG. The shear band patterns developed during plastic deformation are investigated by microindentation technique, wherein much higher shear band density is found in the Be-containing alloy than in the Be-free alloy, indicating an easier nucleation of shear bands in the former BMG. The difference in the plastic deformation behavior of the two BMGs can be explained by a free volume model.

Dynamic compression tests were performed by means of a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). Test materials were 2124Al alloys reinforced with 17% volume fraction of 3, 13 and 37 μm SiC particles, respectively. Under strain rate ε = 2100 l/s, SiC particles have a strong effect on σ0.2 of the composites and the σ0.2 increases with different SiC particle size in the following order: 2124Al-alloy → 124Al/SiCp (37 μm) → 2124Al/SiCp (13 μm) → 2124Al/SiCp (3 μm), and the strain hardening of the composites depends mainly on the strain hardening of matrix, 2124A1 alloy. The results of dimensional analysis present that the flow stress of these composites not only depends on the property of reinforcement and matrix but also relates to the microstructure scale, matrix grain size, reinforcement size, the distance between reinforcements and dislocations in matrix. The normalized flow stress here is a function of inverse power of the edge-edge particle spacing, dislocation density and matrix grain size. Close-up observation shows that, in the composite containing SiC particles (3 μm), localized deformation formed readily comparing with other materials under the same loading condition. Microscopic observations indicate that different plastic flow patterns occur within the matrix due to the presence of hard particles with different sizes.

We investigate the plastic deformation and constitutive behaviour of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). A dimensionless Deborah number De(ID) = t(r)/t(i) is proposed to characterize the rate effect in BMGs, where t(r) is the structural relaxing characteristic time of BMGs under shear load, t(i) is the macroscopic imposed characteristic time of applied stress or the characteristic time of macroscopic deformation. The results demonstrate that the modified free volume model can characterize the strain rate effect in BMGs effectively.

In this paper, a dynamic damage model in ductile solids under the application of a dynamic mean tensile stress is developed. The proposed model considers void nucleation and growth as parts of the damage process under intense dynamic loading (strain rates epsilon greater than or equal to 10(3) s(-1)). The evolution equation of the ductile void has the closed form, in which work-hardening behavior, rate-dependent contribution and inertial effects are taken into account. Meanwhile, a plate impact test is performed for simulating the dynamic fracture process in LY12 aluminum alloy. The damage model is incorporated in a hydrodynamic computer code, to simulate the first few stress reverberations in the target as it spalls and postimpact porosity in the specimen. Fair agreement between computed and experimental results is obtained. Numerical analysis shows that the influence of inertial resistance on the initial void growth in the case of high loading rate can not be neglected. It is also indicated that the dynamic growth of voids is highly sensitive to the strain rates.
