A pseudo-spectral method based on Fourier expansions in a Cartesian coordinate system is shown to be an economical method for direct numerical simulation studies of transitional round jets, Several characteristics of the solutions are presented to establish the validity of the solutions in spite of the unnatural choices. We show that neither periodicity, nor the use of a Cartesian system have adversely affected the simulations, Instead, there are benefits in terms of ease of computing and lack of the usual restrictions due to grid structure near the jet axis. By computing the simultaneous evolution of passive scalers, the process of reaction in round jet burners, between a fuel-laden jet and an ambient oxidizer, was also simulated. Some typical solutions are shown and then the results of analysis of these data are summarized. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd, All rights reserved.

Poly(methacrylonitrile peroxide) (PMNP) has been synthesized from methacrylonitrile by free radical initiated oxidative polymerization and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. NMR spectroscopy confirmed the alternating copolymer structure with labile peroxy bonds in the main chain. The extreme instability of PMNP was noted from FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal degradation studies by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry have revealed that PMNP degrades highly exothermically and the heat of degradation, 42.5 kcal mol−1, is of the same order as that reported for other vinyl polyperoxides. Mass spectral fragmentation pattern under electron impact (EI) condition has also been investigated. The mechanism of the primary exothermic degradation has been substantiated by thermochemical calculations. The chain dynamics of the polyperoxide chain has been studied by means of 13C spin–lattice relaxation times (T1) of the main chain as well as the side chain carbons. The temperature dependence of the spin–lattice relaxation times shows that the PMNP is more flexible compared to the analogous poly(styrene peroxide).

Seismic hazard and microzonation of cities enable to characterize the potential seismic areas that need to be taken into account when designing new structures or retrofitting the existing ones. Study of seismic hazard and preparation of geotechnical microzonation maps has been attempted using Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS will provide an effective solution for integrating different layers of information thus providing a useful input for city planning and in particular input to earthquake resistant design of structures in an area. Seismic hazard is the study of expected earthquake ground motions at any point on the earth. Microzonation is the process of sub division of region in to number of zones based on the earthquake effects in the local scale. Seismic microzonation is the process of estimating response of soil layers under earthquake excitation and thus the variation of ground motion characteristic on the ground surface. For the seismic microzonation, geotechnical site characterization need to be assessed at local scale (micro level), which is further used to assess of the site response and liquefaction susceptibility of the sites. Seismotectonic atlas of the area having a radius of 350km around Bangalore has been prepared with all the seismogenic sources and historic earthquake events (a catalogue of about 1400 events since 1906). We have attempted to carryout the site characterization of Bangalore by collating conventional geotechnical boreholes data (about 900 borehole data with depth) and integrated in GIS. 3-D subsurface model of Bangalore prepared using GIS is shown in Figure 1.Further, Shear wave velocity survey based on geophysical method at about 60 locations in the city has been carried out in 220 square Kms area. Site response and local site effects have been evaluated using 1-dimensional ground response analysis. Spatial variability of soil overburden depths, ground surface Peak Ground Acceleration’s(PGA), spectral acceleration for different frequencies, liquefaction susceptibility have been mapped in the 220 sq km area using GIS.ArcInfo software has been used for this purpose. These maps can be used for the city planning and risk & vulnerability studies. Figure 2 shows a map of peak ground acceleration at rock level for Bangalore city. Microtremor experiments were jointly carried out with NGRI scientists at about 55 locations in the city and the predominant frequency of the overburden soil columns were evaluated.

New complexes, [Ni(HL)(PPh3)]Cl (1), [Pd(L)(PPh3)](2), and [Pd(L)(AsPh3)](3), were synthesized from the reactions of 4-chloro-5-methyl-salicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone [H2L] with [NiCl2(PPh3)(2)], [PdCl2(PPh3)(2)] and [PdCl2(AsPh3)(2)]. They were characterized by IR, electronic, H-1-NMR spectral data. Further, the structures of the complexes have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. While the thiosemicarbazone coordinated as binegative tridentate (ONS) in complexes 2 and 3, it is coordinated as mono negative tridentate (ONS) in 1. The interactions of the new complexes with calf thymus DNA was examined by absorption and emission spectra, and viscosity measurements. Moreover, the antioxidant properties of the new complexes have also been tested against DPPH radical in which complex 1 exhibited better activity than that of the other two complexes 2 and 3. The in vitro cytotoxicity of complexes 1-3 against A549 and HepG2 cell lines was assayed, and the new complexes exhibited higher cytotoxic activity with lower IC50 values indicating their efficiency in killing the cancer cells even at very low concentrations.

We determine the nature of coupled phonons and magnetic excitations in AlFeO3 using inelastic light scattering from 5 to 315 K covering a spectral range from 100 to 2200 cm(-1) and complementary first-principles density functional theory-based calculations. A strong spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering-induced phonon renormalization are evident in (1) anomalous temperature dependence of many modes with frequencies below 850 cm(-1), particularly near the magnetic transition temperature T-c approximate to 250 K, and (2) distinct changes in band positions of high-frequency Raman bands between 1100 and 1800 cm(-1); in particular, a broad mode near 1250 cm(-1) appears only below T-c, attributed to the two-magnon Raman scattering. We also observe weak anomalies in the mode frequencies similar to 100 K due to a magnetically driven ferroelectric phase transition. Understanding of these experimental observations has been possible on the basis of first-principles calculations of the phonons' spectrum and their coupling with spins.

Tert-butyl 2,2-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethanoate was prepared from the ethanolic solution of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate and triethylamine. Acetyl group in tert-butyl 3-oxobutanoate has cleaved off during the formation of the title molecule. UV-VIS, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Proton-Proton COSY data and single crystal XRD results support the proposed structure. Flammability test, impact sensitivity test and TG/DTA studies at different heating rates on the synthesized molecule imply that it is an insensitive high energy density material.

Four dinuclear bis(mu-Cl) bridged copper(II) complexes, Cu-2(mu-Cl)(2)(L-X)(2)](ClO4)(2) (L-X = N,N-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)-methyl]benzylamine with X = H(1), OMe(2), Me(3) and Cl(4)), have been synthesized and characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. In these complexes, each copper(II) center is penta-coordinated with square-pyramidal geometry. In addition to the tridentate L-X ligand, a chloride ion occupies the last position of the square plane. This chloride ion is also bonded to the neighboring Cu(II) site in its axial position forming an SP-I dinuclear Cu(II) unit that exhibits small intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions and supported by DFT calculations. The complexes 1-3 exhibit methylmonooxygenase (pMMO) behaviour and oxidise 4-tert-butylcatechol (4-TBCH2) with molecular oxygen in MeOH or MeCN to 4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (4-TBQ), 5-methoxy-4-tert-butyl-benzoquinone (5-MeO-4-TBQ) as the major products along with 6,6'-Bu-t-biphenyl-3,4,3',4'-tetraol and others as minor products. These are further confirmed by ESI- and FAB-mass analyses. A tentative catalytic cycle has been framed based on the mass spectral analysis of the products and DFT calculations on individual intermediates that are energetically feasible.

New metal complexes of the type M(nih)(L)](PF6)(n)center dot xAH(2)O and M(nih)(2)](PF6)center dot xH(2)O (where M = Co(III) or Ni(II), L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)/or 2,2' bipyridine (bpy), nih = 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone, n = 2 or 1 and x = 3 or 2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic, IR and H-1 NMR spectral data. The electronic and magnetic moment 2.97-3.07 B.M. data infers octahedral geometry for all the complexes. The IR data reveals that Schiff base (nih) form coordination bond with the metal ion through azomethine-nitrogen, phenolic-oxygen and carbonyl-oxygen in a tridentate fashion. In addition, DNA-binding properties of these six metal complexes were investigated using absorption spectroscopy, viscosity measurements and thermal denaturation methods. The results indicated that the nickel(II) complex strongly bind with calf-thymus DNA with intrinsic DNA binding constant K-b value of 4.9 x 10(4) M-1 for (3), 4.2 x 10(4) M-1 for (4), presumably via an intercalation mechanism compared to cobalt(III) complex with K-b value of 4.6 x 10(4) M-1 (1) and 4.1 x 10(4) M-1 (2). The DNA Photoclevage experiment shows that, the complexes act as effective DNA cleavage agent. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Six-membered C,N] cyclopalladated sym N,N',N `'-tri(4-tolyl)guanidines, (ArNH)(2)C=NAr] (sym = symmetrical; Ar = 4-MeC6H4; LH24-tolyl) of the types (C,N)Pd(mu-OC(O)R)](2) (1 and 2), (C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) (3), cis-(C,N)PdLBr] (4-7), and (C,N)Pd(acac)] (8) were prepared in high yield by established methods with a view aimed at understanding the influence of the 4-tolyl substituent of the guanidine moiety upon the solution behaviour of 1-8. The composition of 1-8 was confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of 1-6 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Palladacycles 1-3 exist as a dimer in transoid conformation in the solid state while 4-6 exist as a monomer with cis configuration around the palladium atom as the Lewis base is placed cis to the Pd-C bond due to antisymbiosis. The NMR spectra of 1-8 revealed the presence of a single isomer in solution and this spectral feature is ascribed to the rapid inversion of the six-membered ``C,N]Pd'' ring due to the presence of sterically less hindered and more symmetrical 4-tolyl substituent in the =NAr unit of the guanidine moiety. Variable Endmember Constrained Least Square (VECLS) technique is proposed to account endmember variability in the linear mixture model by incorporating the variance for each class, the signals of which varies from pixel to pixel due to change in urban land cover (LC) structures. VECLS is first tested with a computer simulated three class endmember considering four bands having small, medium and large variability with three different spatial resolutions. The technique is next validated with real datasets of IKONOS, Landsat ETM+ and MODIS. The results show that correlation between actual and estimated proportion is higher by an average of 0.25 for the artificial datasets compared to a situation where variability is not considered. With IKONOS, Landsat ETM+ and MODIS data, the average correlation increased by 0.15 for 2 and 3 classes and by 0.19 for 4 classes, when compared to single endmember per class. (C) 2013 COSPAR. This paper highlights the seismic microzonation carried out for a nuclear power plant site. Nuclear power plants are considered to be one of the most important and critical structures designed to withstand all natural disasters. Seismic microzonation is a process of demarcating a region into individual areas having different levels of various seismic hazards. This will help in identifying regions having high seismic hazard which is vital for engineering design and land-use planning. The main objective of this paper is to carry out the seismic microzonation of a nuclear power plant site situated in the east coast of South India, based on the spatial distribution of the hazard index value. The hazard index represents the consolidated effect of all major earthquake hazards and hazard influencing parameters. The present work will provide new directions for assessing the seismic hazards of new power plant sites in the country. Major seismic hazards considered for the evaluation of the hazard index are (1) intensity of ground shaking at bedrock, (2) site amplification, (3) liquefaction potential and (4) the predominant frequency of the earthquake motion at the surface. The intensity of ground shaking in terms of peak horizontal acceleration (PHA) was estimated for the study area using both deterministic and probabilistic approaches with logic tree methodology. The site characterization of the study area has been carried out using the multichannel analysis of surface waves test and available borehole data. One-dimensional ground response analysis was carried out at major locations within the study area for evaluating PHA and spectral accelerations at the ground surface. Based on the standard penetration test data, deterministic as well as probabilistic liquefaction hazard analysis has been carried out for the entire study area. Finally, all the major earthquake hazards estimated above, and other significant parameters representing local geology were integrated using the analytic hierarchy process and hazard index map for the study area was prepared. Maps showing the spatial variation of seismic hazards (intensity of ground shaking, liquefaction potential and predominant frequency) and hazard index are presented in this work.

We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at T-C1 similar to 270 K and T-C2 similar to 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (T-sg similar to 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly around 270 K which is a signature of magneto-dielectric effect. Temperature-dependent Raman studies between the temperature range 12-300 K in a wide spectral range from 220 cm(-1) to 1530 cm(-1) reveal a strong renormalization of the first as well as second-order Raman modes associated with the (Ni/Mn)O-6 octahedra near T-C1 implying a strong spin-phonon coupling. In addition, an anomaly is seen in the vicinity of spin-glass transition temperature in the temperature dependence of the frequency of the anti-symmetric stretching vibration of the octahedra. In the current communication, we report the synthesis, spectroscopic, crystal structure, DFT and photophysical studies of a new nicotinonitrile derivative, viz. 2-methoxy-6-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-4-p-tolyl-nicotinonitrile (2) as a potential blue light emitting material. The compound 2 was synthesized in good yield via a simple route. The acquired spectral and elemental analysis data were in consistent with the chemical structure of 2. The single crystal study further confirms its three dimensional structure, molecular shape, and nature of short contacts. Its DFT calculations reveal that compound 2 possesses a non-planar structure and its theoretical IR spectral data are found to be in accordance with experimental values. In addition, its UV visible and fluorescence spectral measurements prove that the compound exhibits good absorption and fluorescence properties. Also, it shows positive solvatochromic effect when the solvent polarity was varied from non-polar to polar. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
