The health sector requires continuous investments to ensure the improvement of products and services from a technological standpoint, the use of new materials, equipment and tools, and the application of process management methods. Methods associated with the process management approach, such as the development of reference models of business processes, can provide significant innovations in the health sector and respond to the current market trend for modern management in this sector (Gunderman et al. (2008) [4]). This article proposes a process model for diagnostic medical X-ray imaging, from which it derives a primary reference model and describes how this information leads to gains in quality and improvements. Over the past years, component-based software engineering has become an established paradigm in the area of complex software intensive systems. However, many techniques for analyzing these systems for critical properties currently do not make use of the component orientation. In particular, safety analysis of component-based systems is an open field of research. In this chapter we investigate the problems arising and define a set of requirements that apply when adapting the analysis of safety properties to a component-based software engineering process. Based on these requirements some important component-oriented safety evaluation approaches are examined and compared.

For products sold with warranty, the warranty servicing cost can be reduced by improving product reliability through a development process. However, this increases the unit manufacturing cost. Optimal development must achieve a trade-off between these two costs. The outcome of the development process is uncertain and needs to be taken into account in the determination of the optimal development effort. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) defines Eco-Efficiency as follows: ‘Eco- Efficiency is achieved by the delivery of competitively priced-goods and services that satisfy human needs and bring quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological impacts and resource intensity throughout the life-cycle to a level at least in line with the earth’s estimated carrying capacity’. Eco-Efficiency is under this point of view a key concept for sustainable development, bringing together economic and ecological progress. Measuring the Eco-Efficiency of a company, factory or business, is a complex process that involves the measurement and control of several and relevant parameters or indicators, globally applied to all companies in general, or specific according to the nature and specificities of the business itself. In this study, an attempt was made in order to measure and evaluate the eco-efficiency of a pultruded composite processing company. For this purpose the recommendations of WBCSD [1] and the directives of ISO 14301 standard [2] were followed and applied. The analysis was restricted to the main business branch of the company: the production and sale of standard GFRP pultrusion profiles. The main general indicators of eco-efficiency, as well as the specific indicators, were defined and determined according to ISO 14031 recommendations. With basis on indicators’ figures, the value profile, the environmental profile, and the pertinent eco-efficiency’s ratios were established and analyzed. In order to evaluate potential improvements on company eco-performance, new indicators values and ecoefficiency ratios were estimated taking into account the implementation of new proceedings and procedures, both in upstream and downstream of the production process, namely: a) Adoption of new heating system for pultrusion die in the manufacturing process, more effective and with minor heat losses; b) Implementation of new software for stock management (raw materials and final products) that minimize production failures and delivery delays to final consumer; c) Recycling approach, with partial waste reuse of scrap material derived from manufacturing, cutting and assembly processes of GFRP profiles. In particular, the last approach seems to significantly improve the eco-efficient performance of the company. Currently, by-products and wastes generated in the manufacturing process of GFRP profiles are landfilled, with supplementary added costs to this company traduced by transport of scrap, landfill taxes and required test analysis to waste materials. However, mechanical recycling of GFRP waste materials, with reduction to powdered and fibrous particulates, constitutes a recycling process that can be easily attained on heavy-duty cutting mills. The posterior reuse of obtained recyclates, either into a close-looping process, as filler replacement of resin matrix of GFRP profiles, or as reinforcement of other composite materials produced by the company, will drive to both costs reduction in raw materials and landfill process, and minimization of waste landfill. These features lead to significant improvements on the sequent assessed eco-efficiency ratios of the present case study, yielding to a more sustainable product and manufacturing process of pultruded GFRP profiles.

Atualmente, as empresas distinguem-se das demais pelos produtos e serviços fornecidos com qualidade e dentro dos prazos estabelecidos. Uma empresa de desenvolvimento de software não foge a essa regra e para isso os processos envolvidos nas diversas fases de levantamento, desenvolvimento, implementação e suporte devem estar documentados, ser do conhecimento geral da Organização e colocados em prática diariamente nas diversas atividades dos colaboradores. Para isso deve contribuir uma melhoria contínua desses mesmos processos. O CMMI-DEV, Capability Maturity Model Integration for Development, possibilita a introdução de boas práticas nas diversas áreas do processo de desenvolvimento de software, mas também a avaliação dessas áreas e respetiva identificação de aspetos a necessitarem de ser melhorados ou até disseminados por toda a organização. Este trabalho envolveu efetuar uma análise teórica do CMMI-DEV e sua posterior utilização prática num ambiente de trabalho empresarial para avaliação dos processos dessa empresa. Para a concretização deste segundo aspeto, foi elaborado um questionário para avaliar os processos de uma organização, segundo o modelo CMMI-DEV 1.3, avaliada a facilidade de utilização do questionário de avaliação dos processos por parte dos inquiridos. Foi realizada ainda uma análise aos resultados obtidos nos referidos questionários.

The Corporate world is becoming more and more competitive. This leads organisations to adapt to this reality, by adopting more efficient processes, which result in a decrease in cost as well as an increase of product quality. One of these processes consists in making proposals to clients, which necessarily include a cost estimation of the project. This estimation is the main focus of this project. In particular, one of the goals is to evaluate which estimation models fit the Altran Portugal software factory the most, the organization where the fieldwork of this thesis will be carried out. There is no broad agreement about which is the type of estimation model more suitable to be used in software projects. Concerning contexts where there is plenty of objective information available to be used as input to an estimation model, model-based methods usually yield better results than the expert judgment. However, what happens more frequently is not having this volume and quality of information, which has a negative impact in the model-based methods performance, favouring the usage of expert judgement. In practice, most organisations use expert judgment, making themselves dependent on the expert. A common problem found is that the performance of the expert’s estimation depends on his previous experience with identical projects. This means that when new types of projects arrive, the estimation will have an unpredictable accuracy. Moreover, different experts will make different estimates, based on their individual experience. As a result, the company will not directly attain a continuous growing knowledge about how the estimate should be carried. Estimation models depend on the input information collected from previous projects, the size of the project database and the resources available. Altran currently does not store the input information from previous projects in a systematic way. It has a small project database and a team of experts. Our work is targeted to companies that operate in similar contexts. We start by gathering information from the organisation in order to identify which estimation approaches can be applied considering the organization’s context. A gap analysis is used to understand what type of information the company would have to collect so that other approaches would become available. Based on our assessment, in our opinion, expert judgment is the most adequate approach for Altran Portugal, in the current context. We analysed past development and evolution projects from Altran Portugal and assessed their estimates. This resulted in the identification of common estimation deviations, errors, and patterns, which lead to the proposal of metrics to help estimators produce estimates leveraging past projects quantitative and qualitative information in a convenient way. This dissertation aims to contribute to more realistic estimates, by identifying shortcomings in the current estimation process and supporting the self-improvement of the process, by gathering as much relevant information as possible from each finished project.

This Work Project studies the Continuous Improvement and Processes (CIP) department at TAP Maintenance & Engineering. The project has the objective to provide insights to align the activities of the department with the strategy of the organization. For such, two focuses were taken: (i) an internal analysis which highlighted a need for transversal change to ensure the adoption of Continuous Improvement at TAP, and (ii) a process which outlined objectives and projects to be pursued to prioritize CIP’s activities in accordance with the organization’s goals. The outcome includes (a) important recommendations concerning strategic planning and competition evaluation and (b) a process’ output that reflects a balance among factors influencing the priority of projects.

Usability is critical to consider an interactive software system successful. Usability testing and evaluation during product development have gained wide acceptance as a strategy to improve product quality. Early introduction of usability perspectives in a product is very important in order to provide a clear visibility of the quality aspects not only for the developers, but also for the testing users as well. However, usability evaluation and testing are not commonly taken into consideration as an essential element of the software development process. Then, this paper exposes a proposal to introduce usability evaluation and testing within a software development through reuse of software artifacts. Additionally, it suggests the introduction of an auditor within the classification of actors for usability tests. It also proposes an improvement of checklists used for heuristics evaluation, adding quantitative and qualitative aspects to them

Ohjelmistokehitys on monimutkainen prosessi. Yksi keskeisistä tekijöistä siinä on ohjelmistolle asetettavat vaatimukset. Näitä vaatimuksia on hyvin monenlaisia, ja eri tasoisia; toivotusta toiminnallisuudesta hyvinkin yksityiskohtaisiin vaatimuksiin. Näiden vaatimusten hallinta on myöskin hyvin monitahoista, vaikkakin se on kirjallisuudessa esitetty selkeänä prosessissa, joka on sarja toisistaan erottuviavaiheita. Työn painopiste oli näiden vaatimusten muutoksen ja valmiiseen ohjelmistoon kohdistuvan palautteen hallinnassa, ja kuinka vaatimustenhallintaohjelmisto voisi olla avuksi näissä prosesseissa. Vaatimustenhallintatyökalun käyttö ei sinällään ratkaise mitään ongelmia, mutta se suo puitteet parantaa vaatimusten hallitsemista. Työkalun käytöstä on muun muassa seuraavia etuja: vaatimusten keskitetty varastointi, käyttäjäoikeuksien määrittely koskien eri käyttäjiä ja heidän pääsyään näkemään tai muuttamaan tietoa, muutoksenhallintaprosessin hallinta, muutosten vaikutuksen analysointi ja jäljitettävyys ja pääsy tietoihin web-selaimella.

Vaatimusmäärittelyn tavoitteena on luoda halutun järjestelmän kokonaisen, yhtenäisen vaatimusluettelon vaatimusten määrittämiseksi käsitteellisellä tasolla. Liiketoimintaprosessien mallintaminen on varsin hyödyllinen vaatimusmäärittelyn varhaisissa vaiheissa. Tämä työ tutkii liiketoimintaprosessien mallintamista tietojärjestelmien kehittämistä varten. Nykyään on olemassa erilaisia liiketoimintaprosessien mallintamiseen tarkoitettuja tekniikoita. Tämä työ tarkastaa liiketoimintaprosessien mallintamisen periaatteet ja näkökohdat sekä eri mallinnustekniikoita. Uusi menetelmä, joka on suunniteltu erityisesti pienille ja keskisuurille ohjelmistoprojekteille, on kehitetty prosessinäkökohtien ja UML-kaavioiden perusteella.

Jatkuva laadunmittaus osana ohjelmistoprosessia on yleistynyt ohjelmistoyritysten keskuudessa viime vuosien aikana. ISO 9001:2000 -laatustandardi vaatii yrityksiltä tuotteiden ja prosessien laadun mittaamista ja seuraamista. Laadun mittareiden valinta on haastava tehtävä. Yritykset luulevat usein mittaavansa laatua, vaikka ne todellisuudessa mittaavatkin ohjelmistojen eri ominaisuuksia kuten kokoa tai monimutkaisuutta. Tässä diplomityössä kehitetään ohjelmistojen validointiprosessiin vertailuun perustuva laadunmittausprosessi ohjelmistotuotteiden laadun arviointiin, mittaamiseen ja seurantaan. Laatumittarit valitaan ennalta määriteltyjen kriteereiden mukaisesti, ja niille asetetaan tavoitearvot vertailuanalyysistä saatujen tulosten perusteella. Laadunmittausprosessin lisäksi työssä annetaan suositus prosessin käyttöönotosta ja käytöstä osana yrityksen toimintaa, mikä mahdollistaa jatkuvan seurannan sekä kehityksen tulevaisuudessa.
